So I'm about 3 months too late on this.
It's not a news flash.
Actually it's old news
MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator (VAE) from the Future Earth Collection has got to be the BEST product MAC has put out since ..... ever.
MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator is my Holy Grail Facial Treatment ... at the moment. Since my skin has a hate/hate relationship with me. It changes its mind about how well it wants to behave. It's major problem is poor cell turnover. I get clogged and congested skin. I get buildup. My skin does not seem to like to get rid of old cells like everyone else's skin does. My skin is a pack rat! I cannot use chemical exfoliants alone. They only do half the job. I can't use manual exfoliants alone either. I have found the Clarisonic brush to be a godsend to my congested skin, but there are days when even that isn't enough. On those days...or on days when I'm too lazy to use my Clarisonic I turn to my MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator and it saves my skin!
This is a pitch black, gooey, sugar based scrub. Some may find it smells bad...not like sulfur, but like frosting almost. Heavy vanilla scent maybe. (I'm bad at describing scents) but I don't mind it. It's better than sulfur...trust me! The consistency is like a gritty fondue, a melted frosting, a cream of wheat, if you will. That can make it a bit tricky to apply, but it certainly isn't runny and it spreads easily. It comes in a round tub, which I think works best because if you don't use it for a while it can separate a bit so you will need to stir it up now & then.
MAC Claims that this is a scrub and cleanser in one. It is also supposed to help with blemishes because the scrub contains sulfur. Well, anything you wash off your face quickly isn't going to help with blemishes, that's why I leave it on for a few minutes before scrubbing & rinsing. As far as cleansing goes, you only need a little to get this up to a gray soapy lather, but I wouldn't use it as a means to cleanse makeup off of my skin just because it's a tad messy. While it rinses clean and no black residue remains, I have never thought it wise to scrub before makeup is fully removed from the skin.
As an exfoliator it's heaven. The sugar dissolves (if you scrub with water) so the exfoliation is less harsh than most scrubs. Plus with the regular edges of the sugar crystals you aren't cutting your skin like you would if you used scrubs with nuts or shells in it, because of the irregular edges. Most exfoliators I've tried are either too harsh or too gentle. Most of the time, after use, my skin is smooth for a day but I don't see any other benefit. When I use MAC VAE my skin is the smoothest it has ever been and the results last for more than 2 days. I sort of see that my skin may be clearer after use, but I usually don't use manual exfoliators when I have breakouts so I can't say that my skin is clearer for a fact. You don't need to use much product, which is a plus since VAE was a limited edition product and is impossible to find. It sells for $50 on eBay which is highway robbery since the retail price was only $19!
I was fortunate enough to have Joey to find me a jar in NYC (of all places) so I have a back up, but I'm half finished with my 1st jar and would love to have MAC make this a permanent item. I decided to use the "Live Chat" on the MAC website. Here is a transcript form a recent chat with MAC.
Hello. Thank you for your interest in MAC Cosmetics. My name is Sara. How may I assist you?So I'm not going to try the Microfine Refinisher because, well, it isn't VAE!
Elvira: Hi Sara: I was wondering if you have any news about MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator becoming part of the regular line of Skin Care at MAC
Sara: Hi Elvira! I wish it would become permanent too. I haven't heard anything yet, but I recommend sending your feedback to our Consumer Comm dept. Hopefully it will come back if there is enough demand.
Sara: You may contact them via phone at 1-800-387-6707, (choose option #7) between the hours of 9am-5pm (EST) Monday-Thursday and 10am-5pm (EST) Fridays or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Elvira: I will for sure!
Sara: In the meantime, please try our Microfine Refinisher to refine the skin and unclog pores. It's an excellent exfoliator too.
So there you have it people.
Call or e-mail MAC CS and tell them you want Volcanic Ash Exfoliator to be part of the permanent line.
And hey, in order to really get their attention how about sending in a Haiku with your request!
For those that may have forgotten, a Haiku is a major form of Japanese verse, written in 17 syllables divided into 3 lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, and employing highly evocative allusions and comparisons, often on the subject of nature or one of the seasons. But who says we can't write about black gooey sugary scrubs?
Here are a few to inspire you!
