Artie

My sweet bulldog Artie died last night. you might remember him from the lip gloss chewing incident. He was a sweet dog, if not a little destructive, but sweet none the less. He would bark at you if you stopped petting him, he loved eating the cat's food, he was the Alpha dog in the house even though he was only 50 pounds and about 1/2 the size of his big brother Floyd, and he slept with his tongue sticking out. He had a seizure at 6pm last night and my husband rushed him to our vet. They stabilized him and he came home. He was tired but seemed back to his own self. Then 4 hours later he had another seizure and my husband rushed him to the 24 hour emergency care vet. He continued to have 2 more seizures at the emergency vet and the decision was made to put him down. Had we not, he would have had to be sedated 24/7 (possibly for weeks) to run multiple tests and scans and there was no guarantee that he would have another seizure during this time. It was not a way to live. My brave husband had to make this difficult decision on his own as I didn't hear the phone ring. I'm sorry he had to go through that alone and I'm sorry that Artie is gone and I'm sorry that his big brother Floyd is alone and I'm sorry that my son Darthypie won't remember him. I'll miss you ArtieFartie.

Artie loved to go under the curtain and sit with it resting on his head. What a kook! :-)

Artie looking hungry. He always looked hungry. lol

This is Artie on the day we brought him home.

  14. I'm very sorry to hear of Artie's passing, Elvira, he seemed full of personality and sweet doggy mischief. As tough as it was, it was the correct call to let him go peacefully and not in a slow, drugged state, that wouldn't be fair to either of you. My condolences to you, your family and big brother Floyd from me and my Chevy, who also lost his adopted friend after just one day with us. I'll give him lots of extra love today.

  16. I am so sorry for your loss. It can feel so hard to lose a loved pet. I had to put my beautiful Woody (cat) to sleep 2 years ago, and I was so devastated by it. It is horrible to be the one to make the decision, but it is unbearable to let your loved pet suffer.

  19. I know this is a day late, but I still want to offer my hugs <3 It's never too late to send condolences to someone in pain. I know that even though he's not a true "child", you still raised him, and fed him, and loved him every day. I hope you're alright, hon!

  21. I'm seriously trying not to break down in tears at my desk at work right now. I am so sorry for your loss. The love you have for your dog/pet is something you just can't describe (as I love my pup so dearly as well). I'll be keeping you and your family (and Artie) in my thoughts and prayers.

  22. I've never commented on your blog before, but I read it often -- I am SO sorry to hear about Artie. I had just sent the post about him and the lip gloss to my mom and dad to laugh about.

We had a bulldog named Joey who had a real chewing problem -- he once ate an entire newspaper and the only sign it had happened was one tiny scrap of paper. The photos of Artie remind me a lot of him -- especially the curtain! Joey was always going under my mom's lace curtains or tablecloth. We used to joke he was playing "bride" and annoy my dad, who liked to emphasize Joey's manly side. :P

It's so hard to lose a furry member of your family -- and even harder if you have to make the decision to let them go, even if it is for the best. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Hug Floyd tight!

  23. Tanya: Aww thanks for the kind words and for thinking of us.

Elisabeth. Your story made me smile. It's so awesome to have a bulldog. They are such "personalities". I used to threaten to dress Artie up for Halloween and my husband objected for the same reasons your dad did. lol. Thanks for your kind words and for your post!

  24. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I have a silky x maltese dog named Zhen-Zhen (pearl in Cantonese) and she is (to me anyways) the most beautiful dog. I was just saying to my husband, that when her time comes (she is currently 10 years old) I would miss her terribly. Thankfully she is still quite fit and healthy for her age.
