Thursday Poll

Back to school. Each year it brings back the same memories. Some good some bad. Good ones like the fresh pack of crayons, Trapper Keeper notebooks and new backpacks. Buying new clothes was another thing I always looked forward to. I used to get the Fall issue of Seventeen Magazine in the late summer and start circling pages and pages of clothes. I wanted to be so trendy. I wasn't very popular in school. Always kinda stuck between the freaks and geeks...never fitting in with either. I remember one year I got an entire outfit straight out of the pages of Seventeen Magazine. Yes. I was entering the 7th grade. I chose a red sweater vest, a black & gray plaid shirt to wear with the vest and black jeans. (OK not entirely the same outfit. The Jeans in Seventeen were by Guess and the ones I got were by Palmetto..the cheap rip off of Guess Jeans.) My mother decided it all needed to be washed prior to wearing it to school. Not paying attention to the washing instructions, everything shrunk. The day I chose to wear the new outfit, the sweater vest was too tight, the sleeves on the shirt were at my forearms and the pants barely buttoned. I HAD to wear the outfit because I was lectured about HOW MUCH MONEY my parents spent on the new outfit. I wore the outfit to school but it was awful on me. The sweater seemed to cling to any roll of fat (real or imagined) on my torso. It was unusually hot that day so I was sweating in my "new" outfit and by the end of the day my back and underarms were damp from sweat. I raced home after school, took off all my clothes, changed into something that hid all my flaws and ripped up the entire outfit. In a fit of tears and sweat I stuffed all the "evidence" into a garbage bag and secreted it under my bed until such time that I could put it in the trash without my parent's noticing. They never once asked me about that outfit nor do I think they even noticed I never wore it past the first day. The 2nd day of 7th Grade is the day I learned how to do my own laundry.
On to the poll!

1. Blush Of The Day? - Chanel Joues Contraste in Tea Rose. Such a sweet light pink but on the warm side. Dare I say a hint of peach?

2. I'm so over _____ (product/brand/trend/etc) - Mineral Makeup. I'm so over swirl, tap and buff. And I'm already over the 1980's looks in fashion. Been there. Done that.

3. What was your favorite book as a child? I had several but I think Ferdinand was my favorite. the drawings were awesome and the story was sweet.

4. Do you prefer that cosmetics are labeled using numbers (189) or names (Safari)? - I prefer names. Mostly because I forget numbers. Shu Uemura has some numbers I remember, but Chanel started using numbers in place of names for the glossimers and I can't remember ANY of the numbers!

5. Are you a member of the Silent Generation (1925-1945), Baby Boom (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1979), or Generation Y (1980-2000)? - I'm Generation X. I don't even want to think that Generation Z (2000 to present) is reading this blog. If you are. Go ask your mom for permission!

  1. you have me hooked on this poll. i love love love reading it. so today's i'll answer it.
1- um, NYC Mosaic blush in Coral. It's kind of neat for a cheapie because it has bright coral, shimmery coral, and bronze bits all mixed together.
2- also over the 80s stuff (though a dab of neon here and there looks so neat the way the French women wera it). i'm over how trendy mineral MU is, but i still like using it in the summertime for it's lightness, sun protection, and mattifying properties! and i am not a fan of distressed denim.
3- oh Ferdinand was lovely! my favorites were Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel Marianne, The Story of Ping (duckling), and Goodnight Moon. and the original Winnie the Poohs.
4- NAMES. this is the SAME frickin problem i have with roads! i can remember names and visual landmarks, but start talking about highway numbers and it's all over.
plus with MU names can be descriptive!
    5- Gen Y. ('86)

  2. Oh dear, I think we've all had days like that in school... I remember the day I decided it was a good idea to cut my hair the day before school started. The result? Well, let's just say I learned never to change something big right before a big event!!

    1. Blush Of The Day? - Milani Minerals in Luminous. It's a very pretty pink with golden shimmer, but I'm having trouble getting a good color payoff even though a finger swatch is just fine. Do I need an angled brush?

    2. I'm so over _____ (product/brand/trend/etc) - I totally agree with you about the 1980s! I guess that's how people felt when young kids started wearing 60s clothing in the 80s. ::shudders::

    3. What was your favorite book as a child? The Little House On The Prairie series. It's still a dream of mine to visit De Smet, South Dakota.

    4. Do you prefer that cosmetics are labeled using numbers (189) or names (Safari)? - I prefer numbers because similar names are confusing, like Old Gold/Antique Gold, (insert random word here) Pink, etc.

    5. Are you a member of the Silent Generation (1925-1945), Baby Boom (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1979), or Generation Y (1980-2000)? - I'm Gen Y, but I think 20 years is too long to be 1 generation. Kids born in 1990 seem too young to me!!!

  3. Generation X here! Love your story about school. How totally hilarious. And I haven't thought about Trapper Keepers for years. Excellent!

  4. 1) Prob. WnW Bali Bronze - I have a sick freakish obsession with this bronzer.

2)2nd the mineral makeup - when will people wakeup and realize that aside from some e/s its all crap? Also, the no makeup makeup look.... seriously, why even bother.

3)I was a nerdy kid sprinkled with geek flavored jelly beans - I really dug this book called "Our Environment" and as I aged a little bit "The Diary of Anne Frank". I'm such a dork that I own the critical edition of her diary which is like 700 pgs and am re-reading it.... for fun.

    4) I like names - numbers are a bit off putting and aren't really that descriptive. Plus, why ruin the frivolity of makeup with a number?

    5) Gen Y.

  5. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Nars Gina - got this in a swap and I wear it every day. I normally don't do orangey blushes but this looks so natural on me for some reason...

    2. I'm so over _____ (product/brand/trend/etc) - crappy products that are marketed as natural but aren't, like The Body Shop. I read every label now. I don't mind chemicals as long as they're out there where I can see them, and not sugarcoated beyond recognition.

    3. What was your favorite book as a child? The Monster At The End Of This Book - a little Golden book starring Grover from Sesame Street.

    4. Do you prefer that cosmetics are labeled using numbers (189) or names (Safari)? - Names - I'm intimidated by brands that just use numbers...I have no memory for numbers either but I know the name of all my favorite shades, and there are a lot of names to remember.

    5. Are you a member of the Silent Generation (1925-1945), Baby Boom (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1979), or Generation Y (1980-2000)? - I'm Generation X - I loved the 80s and 90s.

  6. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Stila Convertible Color in Peony. The best cream blush evah.

    2. I'm so over _____ (product/brand/trend/etc) - Hmm right now I am not really hating on anything-skinny jeans possibly. The Uggs trend bout drove me crazy, but thankfully I think it is dead (i hope!)

    3. What was your favorite book as a child? I started reading Judy Blume from the age of 7 working my way up to Forever and Wifey by the age of 10. Let's just say the "sex" talk was never necessary in my house. That is so wrong! I think my parents were just happy that I was reading voraciously :)

    4. Do you prefer that cosmetics are labeled using numbers (189) or names (Safari)? -Oh names for sure! I get tickled when I see a clever name. Unfortch this has cost me a lot of money on non-stellar products. I am looking at you Benefit.

    5. Are you a member of the Silent Generation (1925-1945), Baby Boom (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1979), or Generation Y (1980-2000)? - Gen X Baby! 1971.

  7. 1. Blush Of The Day? - no blush yet today.

    2. I'm so over _____ (product/brand/trend/etc) - wearing heavy eyeshadow. Well eyeshadow all together.

    3. What was your favorite book as a child? Mother Goose stories

    4. Do you prefer that cosmetics are labeled using numbers (189) or names (Safari)? - Names! I am bad with numbers.

    5. Are you a member of the Silent Generation (1925-1945), Baby Boom (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1979), or Generation Y (1980-2000)?
    Generation X

  8. Fellow beauty product junkie here... I just stumbled on your blog, and I'm already addicted!

    1. Blush of the day: NARS Multiple in Copacabana. Not so much a blush as it is a highlighter, but I'm extremely pale and I swear it makes my skin glow.

    2. I'm over: Super red lips in the fall.

    3. Favorite book as a kid: Pretty much anything Roald Dahl, I adored him.

    4. Numbers or names: DEFINITELY NAMES! I especially like when the names are clever, like a lot of OPI nail polishes. They make me smile.

    5. Silent, Baby boom, X, Y, or Z: Earlier portion of Gen Y.

  9. The best part about back to school shopping was purchasing the school supplies. I was in Catholic school all my life so new clothes weren't necessary, but I got a new coat and bookbag every year because that was the only way to accessorize (besides cute designer notebooks in high school). Well, senior year priviledge was after the first three months of senior year we didn't have to wear the uniform anymore. That was the only time I really bought clothes lol

    1. Blush Of The Day? - Becca Cream Blush in Terracotta. All of my makeup is cream today. I was in a rush plus no sleep = I wanted to look dewy so people didn't think Iw as a corpse.

    2. I'm so over _____ (product/brand/trend/etc) - MAC Limited Edition collections, people hating on the black lip trend, the natural MU look, Bare Escentuals, Sephora as a whole.

    3. What was your favorite book as a child? When I was very young it was The Monster at the End of The Book (same as Becca!) and Love You Forever. When I was in early grade school it was Little Women, then Jane Eyre. Then eighth grade-freshman year it became and still is She's Come Undone and Lolita.

    4. Do you prefer that cosmetics are labeled using numbers (189) or names (Safari)? - Numbers. I always remember them. Names I mix up =/

    5. Are you a member of the Silent Generation (1925-1945), Baby Boom (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1979), or Generation Y (1980-2000)? - I'm Gen Y (1987), but I don't think 1990-2000 kids should be Gen Y. I thought 1990-2000 kids were the Millenials.

  11. I know I'm really late with this and I still can't believe that I missed the Thursday poll.

    1. Blush Of The Day?
Aziza pinky peach/bronze duo I got as an extra in a swap. Just the pinky/peachy side. It's matte and just not me though I try.

    2. I'm so over _____ (product/brand/trend/etc)

MARK GREEN! Ever since I was a kid, Mark Green has run for SOME office in NYC. It didn't matter what office. If he could run for the kitchen sink of Manhattan, he'd run and I still won't vote for him. Now after a seven or so year hiatus, he's running for office again. GO AWAY! He bought and ruined Air America. That was the last straw!

    3. What was your favorite book as a child?

According to my baby book (yes I still have mine) I loved The Fire Cat and The Little House (though I remember being terrified of The Little House when the Big City builds up around it).

    4. Do you prefer that cosmetics are labeled using numbers (189) or names (Safari)?

Names if they are logically descriptive like Cadillac Red and not things like Roach and S&M, etc. I don't mind numbers, though I prefer names.

    5. Are you a member of the Silent Generation (1925-1945), Baby Boom (1946-1964), Generation X (1965-1979), or Generation Y (1980-2000)?

Generation X though I feel more Baby Boomer, which I missed by a year. I'm an old soul.
