Guest Review by Joeybunny - Purchase - Dior Smokey Crystal Eye shadow Quint

I am a sucker for anything that is: 1) Dior; 2) Taupey; 3) From a Holiday collection; 4) Expensive. So clearly, when I saw a picture of the new Dior Smoky Crystal quint, I pretty much had an orgasm and died.

Well, I didn’t die exactly, but I came pretty close. I love Dior quints. Granted, I only have three of them so far, but the three I have (Iridescent Leather, Earth Tones, and Elegante) are perfect as far as eyeshadow palettes are. The colors are pigment-rich, soft and luxurious, and oh: Dior has pretty much set the gold standard for taupe eyeshadows. I mean, just look at the Silver Look duo, the Earth Reflections quint, the Sky Glow quint, and the Iridescent Leather quint! TAUPE HEAVEN. Sigh. These are the kinds of taupes that keep Elvira and me awake at night.

Anyway, I digress. The stock photo of Smoky Crystal showed what looked to be four angelic taupes surrounding a pretty bright purple shadow. Basically, this was a Joey quint made in heaven. I had to have it. So today, I ran straight from work and into the Saks’ Dior counter. A very lovely SA showed me the display, and pulled a quint out for me right away (It really helps that I dazzled her with my quint knowledge - I could name all of them on the display! Go me!). So, $61 dollars later (the quints are very pricey at $56, admittedly), I was on my way to have pancakes with my mother, my Saks bag held tightly in my tiny hands.

**Just a random fact to throw in: My mom isn’t a high-end makeup person, but even she loved this quint. Just goes to show you how amazing it is.

The interesting thing is that the stock photo of this quint isn’t quite accurate. There aren’t four gorgeous taupes surrounding the purple. And the purple is actually quite pink. The top left color is a warm beige-tan-taupe color, and the top right is a more silvered, slightly purple, cooler brown-taupe color. The purple middle color is very reminiscent of Urban Decay Ecstasy eyeshadow - a pretty pinked purple shade. The bottom right color is a warmish , deep gunmetal gray color. The bottom right is a gorgeous bright pure silver. I’m actually reminded of the Earth Reflections quint when I look at this one - the color palette is similar, but the Smoky Crystal quint is definitely warmer, and more dramatic. I cannot wait to play around with it. I’m already seeing visions of a taupey smokey eye with silver accents, or a pretty purple eye blended out with the deep gray. Sigh.

So do you need this quint? It’s pretty pricey at $56 before tax, but the colors and textures of the eyeshadows are top-notch. Also, Dior quints are a collectible thing for some makeup addicts. I will say that if you choose to buy it, you’ll absolutely love it and be able to do lots of different looks. And you can also say “OH LOOK AT ME, I HAVE DIOR!” while stroking the palette, Iike I do.

  5. Interesting review! I too wanted this desperately upon seeing the stock photo, but I definitely was thinking it would be a cooler quint. Is ER quint really cooler than SC? If so, I may need both ;) In the past I've always assumed ER would be too warm for me...

  8. Elvira - I hope you're able to get it!

    Marley - I'm an awful influence =D

Old Cow - It's so gorgeous, so much prettier IRL than the stock photo!

Recessionista - Hi honey! It's a divine palette. Granted, it's expensive as hell but Dior shadows are worth it!

Sarah - Yes, ER is more cool-toned than this quint.

Kaoru - Holiday collections kill my wallet too =(

Cindy - This quint isn't really purple at all. The middle purple shade isn't even very purpley! The stock photo is very deceiving. The lilac-y single is is pretty purpley though.
