Perfume Angst

While trying to fall asleep last night, feeling guilty because I didn't have a post ready for this morning, I started thinking about perfume. Perfume, Fragrance, Scents, however you refer to it, is a passion of mine. But my knowledge is akin to the person enjoying the silhouettes projected on the wall in Plato's Allegory of the Cave. I like what I like and I don't question much about why I like it. There are expert reviewers in the blog-o-sphere that have broken free of the cave and seen the light. They can articulately tell you the difference between a peony from a rose, describe a musk and aldehyde, identify top bottom and middle notes and explain the dry down.

Me?
I just like what smells good. My previous lame attempts to describe perfume here, have been my biggest shame. As much as I would like to explain what it is exactly about Serge Lutens Nuit de Cellophane that makes me love it so, I can't. I lack the vocabulary, the "nose" if you will, to describe scents. Some bloggers out there that can weave an entire story out of amber, and leather and blonde woods. They are my idols as far as fragrance description goes.

Annie over at Blogdorf Goodman, is an artist at describing scents that make me have unnatural desires for bottles of perfume that cost well over a day's wages.
Gaia over at The Non-Blonde, weaves tales of fragrance so well that I can almost smell the perfume as I read her posts.
Let's not forget to mention the collective brain trust at Now Smell This blog with Robin, Angela, Erin Jessica, to name a few. I consider them foremost authorities on perfumes.
The equally talented Perfume Posse, consisting of Patty, March & Lee, a power trio of the olfactory sense, bring their reviews of fragrance to life with their expert knowledge of the subject.
And these are not the only perfume blogs out there. There are tons I just don't have the energy to write about, or the knowledge of them.
Do you have some favorites?

After reading all these blogs, one would think that I could muster up enough brainpower to write about more perfumes. But alas, it's a mental block. I'm not sure if it's my lack of vocabulary, my inexperienced nose, my anosima to musk (Seriously I can't smell musk at all...put a bottle of pure musk perfume to my nose and I smell nothing.) or if it is my own insecurity that prevents me from writing reviews. Either way at least I have resources elsewhere on the web to read about fragrances, perfumes, scents, what have you.

I don't consider myself a scent snob. I don't look down on people that only wear the sickly sweet Pink Sugar or
Calyx perfume, nor do I think any less of people that love the heady and almost suffocating Serge Lutens Chergui
or Estee Lauder Youth Dew.
However I might judge you a little bit if you overdose of pure patchouli oil...but that's a personal bias. I am in therapy to work through it. You understand don't you?

While those scents aren't for me, they make other people happy. That's the important part right? I'm sure my constant rose scented perfume obsession is not shared by many. We like what we like. If a scent makes you happy then that's the only reason you need to wear it. I won't think any less of you if you wear Evening In Paris or
Brittney Spears Curious....nor should you think any less of anyone else that wears those scents. And while I described Pink Sugar and Calyx as Sickly Sweet...that's only my perception of the scent. To you, Pink Sugar may be your ideal scent.

What is your ideal scent?

For me it has to be flowery, light and must have rose, peony or lilly notes to it. Not powdery and must be crisp.

Now that you have your favorite scent what is the application? Ah ha! That is the age old question. How does one wear perfume? Are there a lot of rules to wearing perfume? Should there be no rules?
when I was little my mother would apply Halston by spraying on her neck and her wrists and rubbing them together.

The Infamous picture of Marilyn Monroe dabbing Chanel number 5 in the hollow of her neck and decolletage is burned into my brain as the"right" way to apply perfume.

I have a friend that sprays the air and walks though the mist, which I personally find to be waste of perfume.

And others that apply the perfume to "pulse points" and allows the perfume to dry naturally.

So go as far as applying the fragrance to a cotton ball and applying it to their wrists and behind their ears and then tucking the cotton in their bra.

How do you apply perfume?
Personally. I probably wear too much at one time. I like to spray my neck, my wrists and sometimes between my breasts. If I have perfume without an atomizer I like to dab some behind my ears, my neck and my wrists. But I also like to carry a tiny sample with me to refresh the scent during the day. This is mostly because the fragrances I choose ted to fade quickly because they are so light and also because I like to smell the scent all day long.

  1. Happy Monday! my hubby got me Balenciega Paris for Easter ... it has kind of a " bottom of an old lady handbag" top note but i love the powdery dry down. It really grows on you... i like to put a dab on paper and stick it in my purse. Just a little under each ear and maybe a little in my hair..... i so do love your missives!

  2. Thank you for not judging my like of Juicy Couture perfume - the first one. Also, I can't throw away my bigass bottle even if I do get through it - XMAS gift from the hubs. My husband replaced the ring charm on the bottle with my engagement ring and used it to propose to me 2 1/2 yrs ago when I was pregnant. I go through phases like when I want to smell like a rich bitch with a sample bottle of Bois de Paradis. This sample got me through the entire winter - I dabbed just a bit behind each ear or just the nape of my neck. Right now I'm transitioning to Spring and testing out something lighter and green - right now I'm loving the new Chloe in Cappucin(?) I think that's the name - I know it's actually green in a beautiful glass bottle. And then there are the days when I'm coming back from the gym during my lunch break and I'm smelling like Victoria Secret's lotion and that's like perfume all on it's own! Summer time makes me crave more of a coconut scent.

Thank you for not judging me!!

  3. I love perfume too and can't describe it either. I LOVE reading descriptions and lists of notes and trying to smell a scent in my mind.

I'm a slapdash perfume applier. I usually spray, or dab, or roll on my inner arm/wrist and rub on the corresponding place on my other arm. Then I spray, dab, or roll onto my belly and/or into my cleavage.

  4. I once tackled a Lush girl in order to prevent her from tossing a Patchouli soap sample into my bag.
Perhaps I need to join you in therapy...
As for my favourite fragrance, it has got to be FlowerbyKenzo. I find that a tiny spritz behind the ears does the trick!

  5. Elvira, I feel your pain and share your shame! I do NOT have a sophisticated nose and I never will. I like light, soft, floral, citrus scents. And I like vanilla--there I said it. At the moment my favs are CH by Carolina Herrerra, Chanel Eau de Tendre, Dior Miss Cherie and I always have a bottle of Philosophy Amazing Grace around.

  6. I tend to have problems detecting subtle notes in complex fragrances (bad allergies make it hard for me to distinguish), but I definitely know what I love.

Hugo Boss Deep Red, Kenneth Cole Black and Cleanse Your Soul Over the Moon are my favorites these days.

Deep Red I just love to wear, but I usually wear it at night.

I definitely dislike patchouli or heavy incense scents.

  9. I don't like the whole "walk into the perfume cloud" thing either. It does feel wasteful. I spray my collarbone, twice if it's one of my weaker perfumes. If people don't like how strong it is, if it is, too bad so sad :)

  10. You read my mind!! I've been totally stuck on perfume today. I'm ok at identifying main scents if I focus, but I usually don't care enough about a scent past the first impression to try. I've been looking for a new perfume for a while and I just can't find one I really like. I want a fig! I was absolutely in love with Ava Luxe's Figuer, but she discontinued it. Jo Malone's Wild Fig & Cassis was a close second in terms of composition but I find all the Jo Malones so fleeting I can't really bring myself to spend that much on a bottle I have to spritz every few hours with. I also love Physikos, but it's a bit muted, and Satellite, fig + strawberries, but they're way too expensive for me at the moment.

So... weirdly enough today, after trying on L'Occitane Peony, which like most their other scents turns into a weird apple juice on my skin and surfing through all the perfumes Sephora offers, I ordered Ava Luxe Sunday Girl and Johri, neither of which are fresh figs.

So... my ideal scent would be one that captures biting into a juicy, ripe fresh fig in a fig grove in softly shaded sunlight. I also really enjoy light, green citruses, vanillas, peonies and orange blossom.

On my vanity, I currently have L'Occitane Green Tea, Bergamot Tea, The Body Shop Moroccan Rose, Lolita Lempicka Forbidden Flower (mostly for the bottle) and Victoria's Secret Orange Blossom (which, after the initial 10 minutes of slight rubber/plastic actually turns into a delightful, clean orange blossom with just the right amount of sweetness).

I wear perfume but spritzing twice into my hair and then once onto my decolletage.

  11. I'm the same really, all I know is if a perfume is obviously fruity or floral, and if I like it or not. Oh, and maybe if it's musky. But I really dont have the scent knowledge and cant remember what Sandalwood smells like, to be able to identify it in a perfume.

I only really own one perfume, and I apply it in the morning everyday. I usually just chuck a body spray in my bag for use during the day if I start to smell XD

  12. I love Costume National SCENT, and the original CRISTALLE by Chanel.... lately one by carthusia is on my mind called FIORI DI CAPRI...

  13. Funnily enough I like both Calyx (to me it's very light and green) and Youth Dew.
I am a complete perfume-tramp and have lots. Guerlain L'Heure Bleue is a long-time favourite and I now have Serge Lutens Muscs de Koublai Khan! Good thing I can sense the musk in that as it's crazy! I love most Guerlain fragrances actually.
I splash loads on. I hate sprays as it's wasteful and get bottles where possible.
I am probably a bit anosmic but nobody has ever complained. Unfortunately my partner likes La Perla on me so I have to wear that fairly often.....
I know what I like but I'm no good with the lengthy descriptions or analyses.

  17. I actually, in my old age, love ones i used to think were 'too common'...or just plan gross. the original private collection-- NOT the tuberose one-- by estee, used to hate, now love. estee's aligae as well.
new faves for me are guerlain mitsouku, jo malone lime basil mandarin (sometimes love, sometimes hate), issy miyake- a scent, and two dior classics, original miss dior (NOT that 7th grade smelling cherie one), and dioressence. as i age, my likes/dislikes change...

  18. Ahhh, Mitsouko, great perfume love of my life! Those Euro-bastiches reduced you to a mere shadow of your former glorious golden self when they sucked the oakmoss out of you. For the record, you may send all patchouli vibes my way. I promise to wear it only in its smoothest, most refined versions and not as a substitute for personal hygiene (aka "bathing") like the hippies at the organic produce market. If you like rose and lily, Estee Lauder Beautiful must smell lovely on you.
