Femme Science Skin Care

image from http://cdn.womenshealthmag.com

About a month ago I was contacted by a representative at Femme Science Skin Care Products asking if I might be interested in trying some of their products. I’ll be honest with you. I was hesitant. I had never heard of the brand and I wasn’t sure if some random skincare company could really address the skin care concerns that I had. I decided to check out their website and do a bit of my own research.

Attention: Boring facts and information to follow. If you are ADD and just want to read the review, skip down a few paragraphs.

Femme Science, based out of Miami, FL, was created with a specific target audience in mind. Those not yet seeing the first signs of aging..but still wanting to prevent any aging from happening. Ah Ha! I said. That’s me….sort of. I mean I do have a few wrinkles around my eyes, but nothing that is noticeable to the average person. I only see them because I spend WAAAAAAAAY too much time in front of a 10X powered magnifying mirror. According to the Femme Science website the company claims it is “…the only effective and premium skincare line that focuses on skin preservation and is specially formulated for youthful skin.” That all sounds good to me. Preventative approach to anti-aging. Sign me up.

Age Control - Starter Wrinkles Treatment for Youthful Skin 1.7 oz. for $54 –

The first product I received was Age Control - Starter Wrinkles Treatment for Youthful Skin. This lightweight creamy lotion type serum goes on in the morning after you wash your face. It comes in a plastic pump dispenser and provides enough product for your entire face with just one pump. That’s a plus, as so many skin care brands are so wasteful with dispensing product. The unscented white lotion spreads evenly on your face. It absorbs quickly and leaves no sticky or oily residue. You are supposed to follow with a regular moisturizer. I found that while the Age Control wasn’t oily, it was rich enough that I only needed a light moisturizer for my oily skin. Those with dryer to normal skin might want to use something heavier. Please note that because of all the anti-aging ingredients in the Age Control treatment, it is NOT necessary to put an additional anti-aging type moisturizer on top of it. In fact, some of the anti-aging properties of products can interact with each other and you may end up doing more harm than good to your skin. So how do I know? Because It happened to me. I was using the Age Control WITH the Night cream and my skin started to get these strange clogged hair follicles on my upper lip that felt rough. GAH. I was developing an invisible mustache! As soon as I stopped using the products together on my skin, the rough patch went away. Now I just use the age control during the day and the night cream at night. Your results may vary. I recommend a light moisturizer like SPONGE Rose & Sage Cream or CELLNIQUE Intensive Hydrating Oasis Gel or even Oil Of Olay (Basic). Then follow with a sunscreen for added protection…

Hey Wait a second. Why doesn’t Femme Science have a Sunscreen? You totally need that. Talk about prevention of wrinkles. It starts with a good photo stable sunscreen. Just a suggestion.

OK. Back to the Age Control treatment. I didn’t experience any breakouts with this product. My skin never burned, never got dry & flaky and it never got red or irritated. What DID happen to my skin was a refining of the tone and texture of my skin. After 30 days of use I could definitely see a marked improvement in the past acne scars on my face as well as a noticeable smoothness to my cheeks and neck. Now this is not an anti-acne product so it didn’t prevent breakouts, but when I did have a small one associated with That Time Of The Month, I felt that the Age Control treatment helped cut the healing time in half and eliminated the craggy red blemish faster than a regular moisturizer. I noticed a significant change in the skin on my neck because for the first 2 weeks I wasn’t using the product on my neck. I started to feel my neck in relation to my face and my neck felt like sandpaper (OK not really but it didn’t feel smooth) I started using the Age Control on my neck as well as my face (2 pumps) and in two weeks time I noticed a dramatic change. That is a TOTAL WIN!
According to the Femme Science website some key ingredients are: CoQ10, Niacinamide, Beta Glucan, Oligopeptides, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Green Tea, Vitamins A, C, E.

Night Cream Skin Cell Renewal Treatment 1.7 oz for $44 –
The 2nd Product I tried was the Femme Science Night Cream Skin Cell Renewal Treatment. This thick and rich night cream seemed intimidating to an oily skinned gal like me, but with the promise of stimulating cell turnover during the night when our skin likes to heal best, I had to give it a try. The night cream comes in a plastic tub. I think you all know my disdain for cream products that don’t have a squeeze or pump dispenser. I find it too easy for bacteria from your fingers to get into the product and fester. The night cream didn’t even come with a mini spatula so I had to improvise and use a Q-tip every night to scoop out a little product. That’s my biggest gripe. ANYWAY. The cream is ever so lightly fragranced. I can’t put my finger on the scent but it’s not heavy and disappears quickly. The cream is thick and rich. It’s not overly greasy but it certainly wouldn’t be suitable for day wear (Hence the name “Night Cream”). A little goes a long way and I barely made a dent in the product before the 30 day trial period was over. I did notice some small whiteheads every morning for the first week of use. I think the squalane may have been a culprit as I have had this reaction in the past to products that contain that ingredient. However, after a week this “purging” period ended and I didn’t experience any more breakouts. I did wake up in the morning with noticeably smoother skin and it had a glow to it. It was a tad overly rich for my skin type (Oily) but normal to dry skin types will ADORE this cream. Now you oily ladies, let’s not forget that our skin needs hydration just as much as anyone else…especially those of you that use all sorts of toners and treatments to mattify and stop oil production. You know who you are. You are dehydrating your skin when you put all those potions and lotions to stop oil production. You need to give your skin a rest and nighttime is the best time to do it. This night cream worked so well on my oily skin that I found it less and less necessary (In conjunction with the Age Control treatment) to use mattifiers on my skin. I didn’t stop producing oil on my face, but my face was nourished enough that the oil production wasn’t in overdrive!
According to the Femme Science website, some key ingredients are: Acai, Avocado, Shea Butter, Glycerin, Green Tea, Squalene, Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamins A, C, E.

Do you NEED these products? Well I had a very positive experience. I had very low expectations and was very surprised at how well my skin reacted to these products. It was a refreshing break from overpriced skin care products I get at department stores and the mass produced lines that pay little attention to prevention as a key to anti aging. I didn’t like the initial whiteheads breaking me out and I didn’t like the rough skin reaction I got when I used too many anti-aging products on my skin at one time, But that’s my fault, not the product’s. I say if you are in your late 20's to 30’s and need a good preventative skin care line, this might be one to check out. I certainly am going to continue to use up the rest of the product I have…and hey, if they add a good photostable sunscreen for the face I’ll try that too!

  2. Your dog is so cute. I have never heard of this brand either. Recently I have been seeing alot of Cellnique reviews too. But its great that you have positive experience with these products, I am just abit hesitant to try them as I've not heard about this brand before and sampling always help before buying the full sizes.

    Have a great day =)
