Thursday Poll

On the first of November, my local shopping center, mall and pretty much everywhere else I went, had Christmas decorations up and music blaring.  What happened to Thanksgiving?  Have we skipped that holiday because we only buy food and no one really profits but the turkey and canned yam industry?  Why does Christmas come so early every year?  I know I'm not the only one that complains about this. I know there are others that wish the trees and ribbons and lights were put up the day AFTER Thanksgiving, but retailers continue to push it.  I'm not being a Scrooge. I promise, but I kinda like Autumn and Thanksgiving is the last big holiday in Autumn and one of the few holiday's in America that you don't really have to buy gifts.  Sure Turkey and Marshmallows and pumpkin puree are on the shopping list, but things like Diamond rings and Video Games and Leather Gloves are not. And I'm Thankful for that.  It seems like no sooner than the 26th of December we are bombarded with Valentine's day decorations, and on February 15th Easter decorations start multiplying like bunnies (pun intended).  Oh and then there is Black Friday.  The Friday after Thanksgiving where stores open at ridiculous hours to allow shoppers to buy one or two items that are priced so low it creates a frenzy and the next thing you know, you have people waiting in line at 8PM the day before to be one of the first in the store to buy a DVD player for $10.  Really? I like a good deal as much as the next person but it is worth sleeping outside on cold concrete?  Please educate me if you have done this? I'm not casting scorn, (OK maybe a little) but if you have done this in the past, was it worth it?  Maybe I'm bitter because I hate crowds and basically have to avoid the mall the entire weekend after Thanksgiving and through January 2nd. Thank goodness for the interwebz and on line shopping!  Perhaps my misanthropic tendencies come out more this time of year, or perhaps I'm just fed up with it all and will be visited by three ghosts one night.  I hope one of them is Carol Kane as she was in the movie Scrooged.  She's so full of awesome!
On To The Poll!

1.  Lip Of The Day? - Dior Sérum De Rouge Luminous Color Lip Treatment #760 (Raspberry Serum). I think my initial review of this was too harsh.  I have "re-discovered" this lipstick and quite enjoy wearing it.  Now that Dior has added new colors I might even pick up another one. We will see.

2.  For those in North America: Do you feel that the holiday decorations are put up too early?  For those not in North America, do you see a similar phenomenon in your country surrounding Christmas or another gift giving holiday? - I'm curious to see when other countries put up holiday decorations. I always grew up with the rule of the day after Thanksgiving or at least December 1st was when the holiday decorations went up. As you can see from my post above I think they go up too early.

3.  Confession Time! How many mascaras do you have open right now? - I am sad to say that I went on a mascara binge a few months ago and I now have 6 full size and 3 trial size mascaras open right now. I need to throw them all out and settle on just one. I can't decide tho!

4.  What are some of your favorite traditional foods from any of the holidays you celebrate? - I LOVE matzo ball soup, Turkey and Gravy and Stuffing, Panettone Bread (but only if my Brother makes it), and pretty much anything with Marzipan and Dark Chocolate! Oh and Egg Nog. I loves me some egg nog!

5.  Current Lemmings? - A new mascara! I want one the thickens, holds a curl and lasts all day without flaking. Oh and I want a new foundation.

16 comments:

  1. 1. Lip Of The Day? - Epically Epic Fuji apple lip balm. It's delicious and I'm just lounging about the house, no make-up.

    2. For those in North America: Do you feel that the holiday decorations are put up too early? For those not in North America, do you see a similar phenomenon in your country surrounding Christmas or another gift giving holiday? - In England we don't have Thanksgiving, of course, but we do have Bonfire Night on Nov 5th. My supermarket started stocking Christmas food BEFORE Halloween. At least there's no decorations up yet.

    3. Confession Time! How many mascaras do you have open right now? - I regularly use 3 different ones on my lashes, so those, plus two primers, plus about... 5 I just have lying around...

    4. What are some of your favorite traditional foods from any of the holidays you celebrate? - I love the confectionery from Bonfire Night! Bonfire toffee is the BEST! Toffee apples, too. And Christmas, I love roast turkey with bread sauce, and yorkshire puddings, and dessert wine.

    5. Current Lemmings?
Illamasqua powder blushes and rich foundation in 115, because I suspect it might be pale enough for me. Also, new Sugarpill. Oh, and in just 2 more orders, I can own EVERY SINGLE Fyrinnae eyeshadow. So, I'm pretty excited about that. Oh! And Shiro cosmetics. I want more pokémon eyeshadow!

  2. 1. LOTD is the LE NYC colour (sun blush? or something) that is my go-to. it's neutral, moisturizing, and flattering to any eye and cheek look.

2.HECK YES. i actually started seeing Christmas decorations show up in my drugstores and dollar stores in August and September!!!! and now they're everywhere. like you, i adore Autumn, and this autumn has been especially harried and busy for me, with little chance of rest and enjoyment of the season, so i am feeling very Scroogey about the Christmas frenzy right now when all i want is to hang with my family and chill out happily together. RAWR

    3. i have 4 open right now but i don't really care about most of them. Maybelline Collossal is flakey; L'Oreal Voluminous takes out my curl and smears at the end of the day; i do like Maybelline's Falsies mascara fairly well; and i have a Smashbox Lash DNA in royal plum that is pretty and softer than black but it also flakes into my eyes (ARGHHHH i hate that!) and it's running out of shelf life.

any recs? i might just go back to LashBlast since it's on sale super cheap at Ulta.

    4. i ate a bar of chocolate-coated marzipan last night (what? i had PMS!)- the only good thing about early Christmas stuff is early access to marzipan! i love my mother's pies and cheesecakes, the 3 kinds of stuffing she makes, the traditions from Canadian Thanskgiving which add to the richness of the holidays, and the mulled cider i make for myself at this time of year. i also start making homemade candy and truffles to give my friends and family.

    5. me too! i'm very meh about my last two foundations (Photoready is good but not great; Maybelline the Eraser is good for skin but slides with off me) and i already mentioned the mascara problems.

  3. 1. Lip Of The Day? none. Today being a holiday, I'm home with a naked face.

    2. For those in North America: Do you feel that the holiday decorations are put up too early? For those not in North America, do you see a similar phenomenon in your country surrounding Christmas or another gift giving holiday? -It's getting worse every year. Christmas things at the end of October, Eastern things in January, and the worse IMO: back to school stuff before kids have actually finished school!! WTF?

    3. Confession Time! How many mascaras do you have open right now? 2 full size and 1 sample, and that's really my limitation since I do toss them after a few months.

    4. What are some of your favorite traditional foods from any of the holidays you celebrate? Nothing. Call me the Grinch, I hate all that food piling up on my table during the holidays. The foie gras, the turkey...meh. I like some roasted duck but that's it.

    5. Current Lemmings? Finding a fdntn that will be an exact dupe of Chanel Pro Lumiere but without the awful smell Pro Lumiere has. Unsuccessfull so far.

  4. I live in Germany and while I've definitely seen the Christmas lights up and the little huts for the Christmas markets already in place, all is closed and out for the moment. The markets open around the end of November short before the first Advent Sunday. We have a huge Christmas tree put up where I live (Dortmund, you can google the tree, it's huge!) and the lights are not allowed to be lit until Totensonntag has passed, which is on a Sunday in the end of November and does not has a translation but rather an explanation: "last Sunday before Advent commemorating the dead". So I think the "real deal" comes at the exact right time, and fortunately, the radio stations do not chime in until it's about time, too. Of course, there are Christmas-y sweets in the supermarkets since September, but only now they start really pushing it on to people. The malls are relatively free from it as of now. And yes, we all complain about the stuff standing there in the supermarkets while summer is still there, but if no one would buy it, it wouldn't be there the next year, so *we* are ultimately to blame. And in "we" I mean the people, I abstain from buying anything of the like until the end of November (no irony, I really do!) :-)

  5. 1. Lip Of The Day? - I have one of those Creme De Brilliance from Lancome - Blush classique that I'm trying to use. :)

    2. For those in North America: Do you feel that the holiday decorations are put up too early? They were mixed up with Halloween decorations!!! It's really horrible, let me enjoy each holiday on its own! I'm sorry but I do not buy Christmas cards or wrapping paper in October.

    3. Confession Time! How many mascaras do you have open right now? - I actually have 2 MAC ones open and I'm not buying another one until they are done. I don't really like either of them but since I got them I need to finish them.

    4. What are some of your favorite traditional foods from any of the holidays you celebrate? - Turkey is good as is my mom's stuffing for it (it's actually faux stuffing, she doesn't put it in the bird). My apple pie for Thanksgiving is one of my favorites also I make a special St. Basil's cake for New Year's Eve (it has a coin in it for good luck to the person who finds it).

    5. Current Lemmings? - hmm I need a new foundation and I really want to try that Guerlain Gold primer, Chanel mascara, Chanel's spring collection hehehe I can never have too many lipsticks!

  6. 1. Lip Of The Day? -

    Clinique Angel Red.

    2. For those in North America: Do you feel that the holiday decorations are put up too early?

    TOO EARLY!!!

    3. Confession Time! How many mascaras do you have open right now? -

I think only three -- Maybelline Lash Stylist in Brownish Black, Lash Stylist in Very Black and a w/p lash Stylist in very Black.

    4. What are some of your favorite traditional foods from any of the holidays you celebrate? -

It's probably easier to list the foods I don't like! Sweet potato pie with marshmallows on top. Give me roasted or baked yams any say.

    5. Current Lemmings? - I'm back to lemming nail polish!

  7. 1. Lip of the day: Patisserie by MAC.

    2. North American gal here, and it is getting worse every year. Fall clothes during a July heat wave; Halloween stuff in August; Christmas stuff on Labor Day; I try to ignore it. My theory is that there just isn't enough normal crap to fill these places and so the "holiday" (whatever it is, or even "time of year") is used as an excuse. For me, it leads to a lot of online shopping.

    3. 2 mascaras open at the present time; one is for an everyday look, the other for the glam.

    4. Pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, and a cinnamon-nut-crunch Bundt cake for Christmas morning. There is also the annual pear-sour-cream coffee cake for a tea I hold during "fall," which may occur anywhere from mid-October to late November, depending on when summer wants to end where I live.

    5. Lemmings: Another Bobbi Brown shimmerbrick.

  8. 1. Lip Of The Day?

MAC The Faerie Glen. Gorgeous color, but it's a lot more drying than Lustres usually are

    2. For those in North America: Do you feel that the holiday decorations are put up too early?

In general yes, but I think because of the economy, I've been seeing a lot fewer decorations than usual.

    3. Confession Time! How many mascaras do you have open right now?

Just Benefit Bad Gal because I received it as a sample. Otherwise, I never wear mascara - instead of perfect skin or height, genetics saw it fit to only grant me nice, thick lashes. While I'm grateful for that, I'd still rather have perfect skin :-(

    4. What are some of your favorite traditional foods from any of the holidays you celebrate?

Stuffing! I am a carbohydrate freak - screw the turkey, I am a happy camper with a plate full of stuffing and mashed potatoes.

    5. Current Lemmings
    Tokidoki Robbery Palette from Sephora

  9. Anastasia, what is bonfire night? Never heard of that before, it sounds cool!!

  10. I was actually just having a conversation yesterday with my roommate about this kind of... we live in Canada, and today (nov 11) is Remembrance Day, a holiday where we honour and remember fallen troops of our country. It's a very solemn, somber holiday, not the type we really "celebrate" so much as observe - Canadians wear poppy pins from about Nov 1-Nov 11 (they're sold by veterans in Canada and the money goes to support them). Sooo... seeing all this Christmas stuff come out right after Halloween is definitely frustrating from where we stand, because they really could have waited just TWELVE days... it just seems so disrespectful to all the veterans who fought and who fell for our country's freedom.

So.. yes I know EXACTLY what you mean!

  11. As soon as Halloween was over, Japan was all out Christmas.

  12. 1. Lip of the Day? shu gloss in wn with some numbers behind it. I am terrible at remembering names when they are just numbers.

    2. Do you feel decorations go up too early? Yes but probably for the opposite reason you do. It creates a false sense that christmas is closer than it is. I love christmas. I have given up on trying to make myself wait and just started to listening to the music. what? it relaxes me :)

    3. How many mascaras do you have open right now? 2. I hate to have alot open because it just makes me feel really wasteful.

    4. Favorite traditional foods from holidays you celebrate? mashed potatoes, turkey with cranberry sauce, green bean cassarole, pumpkin pie(ok any kind of pie), apple cider (not sure if this is really holiday), and anything that comes out of an advent calendar (have you seen that advent calendar in europe that has sample sized makeup in it? I want that!!)

    5. current lemmings? Advent calendar mentioned above, basically everything from armani holiday including all the sets, one of the glossimers from the holiday collection

    5. Current lemmings?
Uhm, I don't know at the moment!

  14. 1. Lip Of The Day? - Revlon Super Lustous in Prim Rose right now, but I think I might put on some red lipstick soon.

    2. For those in North America: Do you feel that the holiday decorations are put up too early? For those not in North America, do you see a similar phenomenon in your country surrounding Christmas or another gift giving holiday? -I am in the U.S. and I went to CVS the day after halloween to score some discounted candy, but it was all gone and the halloween aisle was covered in christmas. It was pretty ridiculous.

    3. Confession Time! How many mascaras do you have open right now? - Let's see, from memory, I think 11, but there might be a few more. I like different lash looks, and I'm impatient to try them all.

    4. What are some of your favorite traditional foods from any of the holidays you celebrate? - pannetone, I love turkey soup made from leftover turkey after thanksgiving, the actual turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes. I like when family members bake things and bring them over, like banana bread. I think I'm going to go bake some cookies now.

    5. Current Lemmings? - I just got my sephora VIB coupon for 20% off! I want a nars blush, a deep vampy lipstick, and a stila smudge stick.

  15. 1. Lip Of The Day? - Nothing today since I'm at home studying for final exams, but the last time I went out it was MAC Viva Glam Cyndi lipglass over a light orange liner. Thought it would bring out the coral tones, but it didnt. I think I need a brighter liner >_>

    2. For those in North America: Do you feel that the holiday decorations are put up too early? For those not in North America, do you see a similar phenomenon in your country surrounding Christmas or another gift giving holiday? - In Australia we don't have any holidays between now and December so the Christmas decorations are already up in malls. It's still ridiculous, but a bit more understandable since we don't have any other holiday to look forward to between now and then XD

    3. Confession Time! How many mascaras do you have open right now? - officially 2. I opened another one when I desperately needed a mascara one day and used it once.....hopefully it's still okay :|

    4. What are some of your favorite traditional foods from any of the holidays you celebrate? - Pavlova! Christmas food is a bit different in Australia here since our Christmas is right in the dead of summer, so we also have a lot of cold meats and seafood. The parents love prawns but they gross me out :X

    5. Current Lemmings? - I'm really lemming Viva Glam Gaga lipglass and lipstick, even though I know I won't be able to wear them on their own. :|

  16. 1. LOTD - Chanel fraise lipliner with constellation glossimer. ♥

    2. YYYYEEEESSSSSSSS!!!! They go up WAAAAYYYY too early!!! Christmas decorations went up 2 days BEFORE Halloween at my Macy's!!! I was SO irritated I complained to the manager. HA!!

    3. Open mascaras: 2 full size (Chanel & GA) and 2 GWP size. (I'm leaning towards GA)

    4. Fave foods: pumpkin muffins with choc. chips! Turkey w/sour cream (I hate gravy) and DEFINITELY stuffing!!!

    5. current lemmings: Chanel spring 2011 products. I can't wait!
