Thursday Poll

Well Spring is gone and the 90 degree weather has pimp slapped the Washington, DC area. I'm not a fan of hot weather. I much prefer cold. It's easier to get warm than it is to get cool. But one thing I think many of us can agree upon is Rain Sucks.  OK. not like when you have had a drought and you need rain to make the corn grow, but rain all the time, every day just looks absolutely miserable to me.  I am watching a series on the AMC channel called The Killing.  Those not familiar with it should know it's a day by day account of a detective trying to solve the murder of a 17 year old girl. The show is excellently written. The acting is divine.  The story is not spoon fed to the audience like in some crime dramas. You honestly do not know who the killer is. You only know what the Detective and Family of the slain girl know. And even then there are some surprises.  There are red herrings peppered into the story to keep you guessing and the suspense is spectacular!  Here's the thing.  The whole story is set in Seattle Washington. Holy crap it rains a lot there. I mean in almost every scene it is raining. And what strikes me as completely odd, no one uses umbrellas. They just stand there, in the rain, looking like drowned rats.  Everyone on the show looks like crap too. I get that they are supposed to b/c they are all stressed and not sleeping and stuff, but I'm kinda getting the feeling that looking like crap is the norm in Seattle.  Remember the show Fraiser?  You NEVER saw it raining out of his window. You never saw any character come in drenched from the rain, wearing galoshes, wellies or even a raincoat. I don't watch Gray's Anatomy or Weeds, so I have no idea if they make the rain a co-star in the show like The Killing, but judging from the previews I see on TV, no one on Gray's Anatomy looks like crap, so I'm thinking not.  It's a funny thing about TV shows..even movies. When set in a location that is very specific you need to get everything right. The Killing, I think, does that. The rain is a pivotal character in the story. It sets the tone, it causes the other characters to do things that they wouldn't do if it wasn't raining. It's awesome that they use it so much.  Shows like The West Wing, which was supposed to take place in Washington, DC, my home town, well....meh. They showed a lot of interior shots and never once complained about the damn humidity or the traffic.  Trust me. Humidity and traffic around here plays a BIG role in our lives.  It's what makes everyone look like glazed doughnuts with frizzy hair each August and it's what makes us all aggressive drivers that want to shoot each other.  Every town, no matter how small has a specific something that makes it recognizable to people from that area.  It maybe something little like the way people interact with each other, or it may be something big like a 555 foot tall obelisk in the middle of town.  Either way, it's almost impossible to capture every nuance of a town for a TV show or a movie, but I bet if I ask some local Seattleites?, Seattlealions?, Seattlers? they would agree The Killing is doing a good job.
On To The Poll!

1.  Blush Of The Day? - Becca Pressed shimmer Powder in Princess. A warm rose that is sheep but makes a loverly neutral blush!

2.  Are you from a place where a Movie and/or TV was supposed to be set?  How well do you think those show(s)/movie(s) depicted your town? - See my answer above.

3.  Name a makeup pet peeve you experience or see on other people. - One pet peeve of mine is that I could never find a foundation that matches my skin tone it was always too yellow or too dark..that is until I found Armani LSF in 3.75. It's pink but not too pink. It's light but not too light. I just wish it controlled oil. That's my 2nd pet peeve...

4.  What do you miss most about home when/if you travel? - Not much really. I'm not saying I don't like where I live but there isn't too much I miss...except for the low sales tax. *wink*

5.  Current lemmings? - Oooh. I'm back in my highlighter mode again. I want the Dior Shimmer Star highlighter in Amber Diamond. I have the rose one already. I NEED both. And maybe one of the new MUFE Uplights!

    2. Are you from a place where a Movie and/or TV was supposed to be set? How well do you think those show(s)/movie(s) depicted your town? - Rain Man was set in Cincinnati and it made us look pretty darn good. Except there is no Oak Street K Mart.
    3. Name a makeup pet peeve you experience or see on other people. -
Mine is migrating eyeliner, pooling in my inner eye corner. YUCK
    4. What do you miss most about home when/if you travel? - 3 Ways.

  2. 1. Blush Of The Day? -
Not sure yet, but I've been reaching for two that are brown quite a bit. One is very pinky- rosy and the other is a warm plum tone; they are Too Faced's Mocha Mi Amore and Korres' purple- brown.

    2. Are you from a place where a Movie and/or TV was supposed to be set? How well do you think those show(s)/movie(s) depicted your town? -
The Lassie movie from the 90's was partially filmed here. I think it did a fair job of depicting life here because it showed the rich rancher type, the poor farming type, Southern hospitality at its best and a fear of outsiders at its worst. They included some amazing shots of the countryside.

    3. Name a makeup pet peeve you experience or see on other people. -
When I see people who have very sloppy, heavy makeup. It's like they don't even care what they look like, which is much worse that not putting any on in the first place.

    4. What do you miss most about home when/if you travel? -
The mountains. Going somewhere flat makes me feel pretty exposed.

    5. Current lemmings? -
The Burt's Bees tinted lipbalms. I can't find them anywhere and it's driving me nuts!

    1. Blush Of The Day? -Illamasqua Rude. Getting in the mood for the makeover I'll be having tomorrow at one of their counters in London :)

    2. Are you from a place where a Movie and/or TV was supposed to be set? How well do you think those show(s)/movie(s) depicted your town? Gosh, no, I live in the middle of nowhere :)

    3. Name a makeup pet peeve you experience or see on other people. - overplucked brows. Mine do look overplucked as well because 1/ they used to be (bad beautician service) and never grew completely back and 2/ they're super sparse to start with AND a light color.

    4. What do you miss most about home when/if you travel? - Well, my home! My place, my stuff, the fact that I know everything about the area.

    5. Current lemmings? - I'm pretty much lemming free but I still expect to spend a ton in London. You know, impulse buying.

  4. 1. Blush Of The Day? Dior Harmonie de Blush in Coral Riviera

    2. Are you from a place where a Movie and/or TV was supposed to be set? I am from Copenhagen/Denmark where the original Danish version of "The Killing" was made. I haven seen the American version but it certainly rains a lot here in autumn and winter and I guess we don't look very glamorous during those long cold months.

    3. Name a make-up pet peeve you experience or see on other people. The orange look when someone wears too much selftanner.

    4. What do you miss most about home when/if you travel? My 3 cats and my make-up collection:-)

    5. Current lemmings? Any make-up from MUFE and Nars - which I cannot get in Denmark. I always want what I cant have.

  5. 1. Blush Of The Day? - No blush as usual.

    2. Are you from a place where a Movie and/or TV was supposed to be set? How well do you think those show(s)/movie(s) depicted your town? - Toronto stands in place for a lot of US cities so its probably not represented as the city I know.

    3. Name a makeup pet peeve you experience or see on other people. - Too much cakey foundation or not the right foundation on myself irks me.

    4. What do you miss most about home when/if you travel? - Just my cat.

    5. Current lemmings? - The Kate Spade Shoes I talked about on my blog today. But I can iz too broke for anything :(

Are you from a place where a Movie supposed to be set?
The Score set and film in Montreal. Most of the action is in the Montreal Old-Port as Montreal look like that but really it is juste a small section of the city. And the bus transit is really not where Edward Norton take the bus LOL!
another thing the Curious case of Benjamin Button was shoot in New Orleans AND Montreal (I think Montreal Old-Port was passes as Russia)
Pet Peeve - Nail polish that chips the day after and take the longest time to dry
What do you miss most about home when-if you travel? Not much, maybe good beer!
Current lemmings? Le metier de la beauté Kadeiloscope Le Cirque ou Penelope ... I just purchase Le Crochet so need to wait!

  7. I lived in Seattle for almost a year. It's so funny you mentioned the whole not owning an umbrella because I remember going out at 5:30 AM (I worked for a coffee shop, naturally) in the pouring rain with only my heavy duty snow jacket pullover to protect me. I will say in Seattle's defense, summers are absolutely stunning and for the most part Seattle folks don't walk around looking like shit. Well unless if we go back to the grunge days...hahahaha, I'm kidding Washington state readers! I love your State and this is coming from a dreaded California inhabitant.

    1. BOTD - NARS Orgasm layered on top of South Beach Multiple

    2. San Francisco - they never really capture the grittiness of what SF can have. The city isn't just one big cable car route or one long Golden Gate/Bay Bridge. Little independent films shot here in SF, truly capture the city by shooting in lesser known, unsavory neighborhoods. I grew up in Daly City (south of SF) and the only thing that was shot there was part of the documentary, "Scratch" - for the most part it's a foggy, suburb. Not much to it.

    3. I have to agree with you - foundation that doesn't properly match my skintone. On others - the same or eyeshadow/blush that needs to be blended more.

    4. When I travel outside of SF, I miss properly wrapped burritos. This is equivalent to the pizza/bagel debate for the East Coast folks.

    5. Current lemmings - the new Burberry lip mist lipsticks, D&G leopard printed bronzer, NARS Cap Ferrat trio. I'm sure I'm missing a few other items.

  8. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Shu Uemura P Peach 45 - I dug it out to go with my new Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Liberte and I'm really loving the combo today. =)

    2. Are you from a place where a Movie and/or TV was supposed to be set? How well do you think those show(s)/movie(s) depicted your town? - I'm currently in SF and I think there are a lot of movies set here, but the one that comes to mind is "The Rock" which I actually watched last weekend - it's pretty spot on except that we don't have yellow taxicabs here.

    3. Name a makeup pet peeve you experience or see on other people. - Foundation matching is probably also my #1 pet peeve. I'm between shades in Shu Face Architect and MUFE F&B. T_T;

    4. What do you miss most about home when/if you travel? - Knowing where everything is and how to get places and how to solve problems and what to do - the familiarity of it I think, and also the weather believe it or not. I'm spoiled here since we're always within like a 15 degree window.

    5. Current lemmings? - I think NARS Sheer Matte might be my new foundation and I also want some more Dior Addict lipsticks...

  9. I had to weigh in on this poll as question 2 struck a nerve with me. I, too, am from the DC/northern VA area and went to a rival high school that the movie "Remember the Titans" was based on. Couldn't believe they (Hollywood) used a completely different high school - one that was very traditional in architect. So NOT TC William's!

  11. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Nothing yet but I will probably put on Nars Deep throat.

    2. Are you from a place where a Movie and/or TV was supposed to be set? How well do you think those show(s)/movie(s) depicted your town? - I actually live where they film those shows. I think when people film in hollywood and it's supposed to be hollywood they make a large effort to hide how ugly this place is. Shot of star on sidewalk, shot of palm tree in the sky, not usually showing a whole street shot, though they will use a real shot when it's supposed to be somewhere else. I see places I frequent on tv and in movies all the time. I've been filmed so much here I must be in 10 movies by now.

    3. Name a makeup pet peeve you experience or see on other people. - I have trouble finding a foundation match as well because I'm pale, but not the palest shade. I'm in between a NW15 and NW20, but I usually just get NW20 because it's a better match. I have to mix with every drugstore foundation. I can also never find a cheaper foundation for dry skin that is moisturizing.

    4. What do you miss most about home when/if you travel? - My hometown is Boston. I hate the people but it is so beautiful there. I miss the low sales tax/no tax on clothes, shoes, food, the beautiful seaside towns, way better italian food. I don't usually miss it though; my heart is in California.

    5. Current lemmings? - I never really cared for nail polish, but now I'm craving it. I want the polishes from the surf baby collection even though I've heard mac polishes aren't too great. I would love to have chanel mimosa, but I can't get it now because I bought a yellow polish yesterday and I'm waiting on two more from zoya. I think I spent more trying to dupe that polish than I would if I actually bought it. I love the essie braziliant collection. I also want Make Up For Ever eyeshadow in #93. It isn't sold at sephora or I would just run and get it. I'm hoping it will be at IMATS and if it is not there then I will have to go to Nigel's Beauty Emporium which isn't so bad because I need some stuff there anyway.

  12. ugh I totally agree with you on hot weather. I hate being too hot. You can just put more clothes on in the cold but in the heat, there is a point in which public decency requires you to stop removing articles of clothing for the sake of "cooling"

    1. I never put on blush today, or any makeup. I'm in the middle of moving. All I did was pack and go to the gym :P

    2. Well, I am currently in San Diego. I would say it is not accurately portrayed in most movies because, I know this may come as a shock to most people, it is actually not 70 degrees and sunny here all the time. Its a beach town. We get fog and cloudiness and rain. My BF works at a hotel and complains all the time about how the guests ask him what he did with the nice weather?

    3. My makeup pet peeve would probably be too much bronzer or eyeliner that is not in contact with your lashline.

    4. I miss my dogs that i had to leave at home when I left for college. Otherwise, I sometimes miss my bed :P

    5. I want the LMdB face palette, GA etk shadow and RDA lipstick and gloss, and el sumptuous colored mascara, not sure which color.

  13. You make me want to watch the American remake of the first Ring movie, with Naomi Watts. It was ALWAYS blue and rainy in that movie, and that was set in Seattle XD

    1. Blush Of The Day? - I actually used a bit of my Illamasqua Flare Lipstick as a cream blush, with a little MAC Springsheen dusted on top.

    2. Are you from a place where a Movie and/or TV was supposed to be set? How well do you think those show(s)/movie(s) depicted your town? - Nothing good is ever set in my town, but Daybreakers was shot here! :)

    3. Name a makeup pet peeve you experience or see on other people. - I have an odd skintone too, and my foundation shade seems to vary from day to day. I use 150 Buff in Revlon Colourstay and some days it looks awesome, but some days it looks way too dark for me :S I also hate seeing girls with yellow undertones who've caked on pink toned foundation. I was in a group with a girl like that the other day, and I couldn't stop staring (I hope I was actually being stealthy about it)

    4. What do you miss most about home when/if you travel? - Being able to sit down and do my makeup with my full length mirror and all my stash with me. I also always miss my shower, other peoples' showers and hotel room showers are never the same, especially the water pressure.

    5. Current lemmings? - I actually can't think of anything makeup related! I am wanting to get a few tv shows on dvd though, and need to buy a ticket to a music festival here.
