Aveeno Positively Radiant Eye Illuminator Review Pictures

When I was sent the Aveeno Positively Radiant Eye Illuminator I was actually hopeful that I had found an Aveeno product that actually worked well for me. I'm not sure what my problem is. The sunscreen and colloidal oatmeal baths are OK, but the lotions, face washes and facial moisturizers from this brand just do not work for me. Either they break me out or the irritate my sensitive skin. Maybe it's the "active natural" ingredients, maybe it's my craptacular skin. I don't think it's Aveeno's fault. I mean they have a huge following and TONS of positive reviews all around the interwebz. When I received the Aveeno Positively Radiant Eye Illuminator I had hope. Hope that this product would work well for me.

Why was I hopeful? Well many years ago I actually used the Aveeno Positively Radiant line of products with not too many adverse effects. I adored the self foaming cleanser, however. I was sad every time the pump stopped working, got stuck, and I felt like I ran out of the cleanser too quickly, so I just gave up using it. Then I also used the moisturizer. It was a very nice but the Salicylic Acid eventually irritated my face and the Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer w/ 15 SPF was too greasy for my oil slick of a face.  So why was I hopeful, again?  I'm not sure. I guess the past has made me forget my issues with the brand.

So let's just fast forward to now. The Aveeno Positively Radiant Eye Illuminator arrived and I really liked the look of the packaging.  It reminded me of those Physician Formula mascaras shaped like a leaf...only the eye cream was more modernized with a neat shimmer to the light jade colored plastic packaging.  Of course as the Don't They Know Who I Am? Blog points out...it also kinda looks like a personal...um...massager. She's right. More on this later*.

So according to the packaging and the Aveeno Website
"The Eye Illuminator refreshes and hydrates under eyes with an innovative brush applicator and a formula containing an exclusive combination of ACTIVE NATURALS® Total Soy Complex boosted with tone-evening vitamin B3 and light-diffusing technology to rejuvenate your natural radiance and help you look fresh and luminous."

Well that sounds awesome. Right?

So I open up the tube/product/thingie and while I feel I am almost breaking it, I manage to twist the cap off.  There is a brush on the inside, a nice soft synthetic brush. All you need to do is squeeze the tube/vibrator/thingie and the product spurts out.  Be careful not to squeeze too hard or too much product will spurt out. I guess in my previous experiences with this type of packaging, and I have had my fair share) I have had to squeeze harder to get the product to spurt out, but this is a rare instance in which it spurts out, almost prematurely. In fact. I don't see this paragraph going in a direction that isn't NC-17 at all so I'll just stop here.

So the issue I have with the brush is the same I have with ALL products with a built in brush. It's not sanitary.  You apply a brush with product to your skin. It is possible to pick up bacteria and other creepy crawlies from your skin with said brush.  That brush is kept in a semi dark and moist environment with equals a Studio 54 for germs to get down and dirty on the brush.  Not good. Yes. You could clean the brush, but honestly I doubt I could get it clean enough without introducing water or bacteria into the product itself.

Now on to the product itself.  I can't tell you how it preformed. I can't tell you what results I saw. Wanna know why?  The Aveeno Positively Radiant Eye Illuminator stung my eyes and the skin around my eyes like no body's business!   I put the stuff on under my eyes, and lightly at that, and it STUNG!  Not a good feeling.  I asked Mr. Sith to try it but he refused.  I shouldn't have told him that it was stinging me before I asked him to try it.  I thought the stinging might be a reaction to something else on my face so the next night I tried it again before I put anything on. I washed with a mild non soap cleanser, applied the Aveeno Positively Radiant Eye Illuminator and GAAAAAH!  It BURNS!  Yep. This was yet another Aveeno product that was not for me.

Do you NEED this?  Well you would think I would say "No", but I'm going to say "Maybe" because I think it's just my dumb luck with Aveeno products.  They have so many great reviews and even good reviews for the Aveeno Positively Radiant Eye Illuminator that I just think it's me.    However, and there is always a however, if you do purchase this, make sure you can return it for a refund or store credit....just in case.  The only way to improve on this product is to either make it not burn the skin around my eyes or make it *battery operated and vibrate.

  1. Cool! I generally like Aveeno body lotions and sunscreens. Will check this out.

  2. Hmm...my eyes always look like I've been out partying all night, so I'd normally be tempted to try this, since my skin is pretty sensitive too I think I'll skip the burn though.

  3. Three years ago I have tried an Aveeno "oil free" sunscreen, not only it creates enough oil to soak up 3 blotting sheet (I have normal skin so I only use those to test how oily products are), its remnant on my hand also managed to dissolve all the writing on a bourjois blush AND turn the plastic rough...

    I haven't tried anything since (OK, I have used my friend's self-foaming cleanser once...but it didn't count)...

  4. weeell, as you probably noticed, it stung the jiminy out of me too :( Two strikes, sadly, though I do like a big chunk of the rest of the Aveeno line. Don't really know what happened here!

  5. Hahaa love it. I had read Suzanne's review on this too and laughed when she likened it to that, another giggle just escaped as I was reading this. Despite any negative reviews I've seen of this, I still reallly want to try it. Cute marketing always wins, I think the packaging is super cool but am known to get stingy eyes from a multitude of eye products..hmm

  8. Hmm...I just bought this product because I was looking for something that would make me look less crack-addict exhausted. I didn't really care about the packaging, and I have never tried Aveeno (I am a St. Ives girl). I do feel heat under my eyes when I use it, but it doesn't sting or make me teary-eyed...it's just a nice warm feeling. I'm not yet sure how it will work for long term results, but the fact that it had no adverse effects has to be good, right?

  10. I recently brought this product as well, first time i tried it, it burned so bad! but the burning feeling went away after a minute or 2. I thought it was just a bad day so I've used it a few times since, and nothings changed at all, it still burns under my eyes. Not a product I'd recommend.
