Sephora + Pantone Universe Color Of The Year Creme Lipstick in Tangerine Tango - Review, Pictures, Swatches

image from Sephora.com

Last week I wrote about Pantone and their color of the year, Tangerine Tango. A brilliant Orange Red that you will see on the runways this Spring, Summer and into Fall.  Pantone has teamed up with Sephora.com to offer cosmetics in various shades of Tangerine Tango and other shades that compliment the hyped hue.  Today I bring you the cornerstone of the collection.  The Creme Lipstick in Tangerine Tango icon.

First off let me say that under NORMAL circumstances I would not purchase a bright orange lipstick.  I think MOST people would not purchase a bright orange lipstick. But being that I'm a sucker for all things new and unique in cosmetics AND a magpie who is attracted to shiny things, let's just say that this was "the Perfect Storm" to get me to lay out my money for orange lipstick....excuse me. Tangerine Tango lipstick.

Before I wax poetic about the lipstick itself, let's look at the impressive packaging.

The BOX that The Sephora + Pantone Universe Creme Lipstick comes in is hefty. It's a large box with a graphic grid of various shades of this year's "it" color.

Slide the box open and you see the white clad lipstick case nestled snugly in the box.  You have to remove a thin plastic protector to even get at the lipstick itself.

Once you manage to extract the lipstick case from the box you notice how incredibly heavy it is.  Seriously heavy.  I was wondering if they had put rocks in the darn thing.  My question was soon answered as I removed the top of the case from the metal base of the lipstick.

Magnets.

I was as perplexed by why they chose such HEAVY magnets, as Insane Clown Posse is by how they actually work

Thankfully I know how magnets work because I listen to SANE Clown Posse.

Getting back to my point.

The case is heavy. Overly so.  Whatever. You don't need to be a weight lifter to carry it around, but it certainly is one of the heavier cases I have ever had.

The lipstick bullet.  It's all swirly and ridged.  KEWL!

I like a unique looking bullet.  Let's face it. When you already own 84,769,076 lipsticks, it's fun when there is a little variety in the shape.

The color...well, here's the problem. the color isn't exactly Tangerine Tango.

See?

Tangerine Tango is more red. It's certainly orange but it's not THAT orange.  Is the lipstick  unwearable?  No. It it totally wearable. But I personally do NOT think this is a close enough match for Tangerine Tango.  The color finish is slightly sheer. It is not opaque, as described on the Sephora website. However, if one were to apply Sephora + Pantone Universe Creme Lipstick, blot and then reapply one would get a more opaque look to the finish.  It would also help in deepening the color.

The formula is nice. It's very slick and very emollient. There is a vanilla scent to the lipstick, but it fades quickly.  The lipstick has no flavor, which is also a plus.  There is a generous amount of slip to the product. Some may find it too "greasy". It's not oily per se, it's just really, really slippery and glossy.  The glossy part is nice.

applied straight from tube, blotted and reapplied

Can anyone wear this color?  No.  Not by a long shot.  Well...let me rephrase that. Not as is.  Anyone could wear this if one were to doctor it up a bit.  Some women can wear this color straight out of the tube, while others may have to apply this with a lighter touch and top it with a gloss (clear or colored) to get a look that is most flattering on them.

applied with fingertips with a sheer pink gloss over top.

Do you NEED this?  No.  Not unless you are fanatical for orange and you actually look good in it.  You could get the lipstick, just to collect...I suppose.  Or you could get it if you are willing to doctor it up every time you apply it.  It just depends on how high maintenance you want your lipstick to be.  The Sephora + Pantone Universe Creme Lipstick in Tangerine Tango icon retails for $18 which is reasonable considering all the packaging and heavy ass magnets they include.  But what I like most about this pairing of Sephora and Pantone, is the wide range of cosmetics and tools they have come out with for this collection. Multiple gloss shades, blushes, eyeshadows, eye liners, nail polishes and brushes, bags and a lash curler.  For those that adore orange accessories, your day has come!  Better get them all before they are gone.

  2. I would at least consider wearing this straight out of the tube! But then again, I love orange/coral, and it works relatively well with my coloring.

It actually reminds me a lot of Revlon Colorburst lipstick in Coral, which I love.

  3. I can wear it out of the tube with no issues, but I LOVE how it looks muted out on you. Gorgeous!

  6. Under normal circumstances I would buy a bright orange lipstick. Wont be getting this one though. I was hoping for an exact match to Tangarine Tango. Alas, it is not. I suppose you could use the heavy lipstick tube as some sort of gun ammunition. Go deer hunting.

  7. oh that Packaging! I'm such a sucker for white packaging...it's so rare in cosmetics too! BUT, I would never wear red orange lipstick. Even if it was the most flattering shade for me. I'm too much of a shrinking violet. But the CASE (it matches my iPhone!) and the bullet!

  12. OMG I bought nearly all of this but have been too afraid to open them and use them! I purchased the lipstick, nail polish set, and eyeliner trio. I am a sucker for anything orange. And adoreee the shape of the lipstick itself.
Frankly, I don't think the lipstick is tooooo far off from the Pantone color, but I see what you mean about it not leaning red enough. It looks like a super bright coral. This color reminds me of Crayola's "red-orange" crayon!

  16. I saw all of that stuff today in Sephora and the products and the packaging are seriously cool. I really like this color and could probably wear it with my coloring but I don't know if I'm brave enough sad to say. I AM rocking A Roll In The Hague on my nails though (it seems to be almost this exact color); I'll wear just about any color on my nails. I am so digging orange these days...

  17. Great photos. Love the closeup of the product with the nice ridges. Do you have a list of lipsticks that would more closely match the actual Pantone Tangerine Tango swatch?

Love this collection because I'm a graphic designer in my other identity. Pantone has had some cool products for a while, but this collection is the rockin'-est!

By the way, I just love your blog! I look forward to every new post.

  18. I've just got to sit this one out. I have olive skin, which means green undertones. Orange makes me look nasty. I think it looks really nice on redheads and blondes, however.
