Thursday Poll

Today is March 1st. It's the first day of Spring. It's also the first day of the month.  It's a day where I say Rabbit. Rabbit. Rabbit. as the first words I speak before I get out of bed.  (I also post this as my status message on Facebook as well).  It's a common British superstition. There variations on it. Saying "rabbit, rabbit, white rabbit", "rabbit, rabbit, rabbit", "rabbits, rabbits, rabbits", "rabbit, rabbit" or simply "white rabbits" upon waking on the first day of each new month, and on doing so will receive good luck.  The origin of the superstition is not exactly known, although it appeared in print at as early as 1922.  Some reports place its origins in the 1800's. Like any superstition it's difficult to determine the exact creation or why it is done.  Theories suggest that it is related to the belief that the rabbit is a "lucky" animal.  As shown in the superstition of carrying a rabbit's foot for luck. (Although I don't think the rabbit who lost his foot was very lucky at all.  Having said Rabbit. Rabbit. Rabbit. on the first of the month for several years, I can attest that I have not noticed any increase in luck for me....however, I haven't thought about stopping the practice to see what would happen either.  Isn't it silly how grown, rational, educated adults still abide by superstitions?  I know some superstitions are for our own health and safety, such as not walking under a ladder - Something could fall on you for sure. it's just not safe.  Or not putting shoes or a hat on the bed or table - shoes are dirty and back in the day, people had all sorts of vermin living in their hair, putting them on areas where one would want to keep clean, a table for eating on, for example, makes perfect sense. Other superstitions do not.  Walking over the path of a black cat, or knocking on wood if you dare tempt fate or witness an unfortunate event and have no salt to throw over your shoulder...they have no logical or practical reasons for those types of practices. I could go one and on about the religious context of many superstitions and how they tie in with folk lore and folk religions, but I don't want to bore you. Here is a link to some common superstitions.  I'm fascinated with superstitions and I love to hear and read about new ones.  I wonder if in this electronic age, if there will be new superstitions attached to the internet, computers, electronics, etc. Well. Even though I know it is completely illogical, I'm still going to keep saying Rabbit. Rabbit. Rabbit. on the first of the month.  I'm also going to keep practicing the other superstitions I know.  Why tempt fate?  Knock on wood.
On To The Poll!

1. Lip Of The Day? - Chanel Rouge Coco in Perle.  I had actually thought I lost this lipstick until I found it in the pocket of a coat I hardly ever wear.  Thank goodness, because I really like this color. It's a great neutral lip.  I just wish it was a tad bit more moisturizing.

2.  What sort of superstitions do you practice/observe? - Oh so many. Knocking on wood, The above mentioned rabbit thing, throwing salt over my left shoulder, lifting my feet when I drive over railroad tracks. kissing my finger and putting it on the ceiling of my car as I go through a yellow light, no shoes (new or otherwise) on the bed, and more.

3.  Recent beauty purchase bust? - Bobbi Brown Face Touch Up Stick. I wanted another stick concealer to try out.  This was far to creamy for my oily face. I think it would be better for those with dry skin. The stuff just slid right off of me.

4. Any superstitions you used to practice/observe but now don't? - Opening an umbrella inside. I got over that quick after a week long rain left my umbrella mildew-y!  Yuck. Now I always open it up to dry out. And "An itchy palm means money will come your way."- After I realized that when I forget to take my allergy medication my hands itch, especially my palms, and I was none the richer for it I stopped hoping for that Publishers Clearing House check to show up on the mail.

5. Recent beauty purchase boom? - Jo Malone Vitamin E Body Balm.  I had a gift card to Neimans so I used it to buy this expensive body butter. It smells like warm honey and cream and moisturizes like a dream.  Best thing is, a little goes a long way, but I still wish it was less expensive.  I can't see myself using my own money to purchase this again when I run out. I do love it tho!

  1. 1. Lip Of The Day? - Estee Lauder Pure Color in Coral Fantasy

    2. What sort of superstitions do you practice/observe? - I hate flying and have a lot of superstitions around taking a plane, which involve buying water and Cosmo UK at the same shop in the airport, for example. I knock on wood. I'll do that thing with my fingers that we do in Sicily, too (looks like an ILY sign but not the same meaning, definitely)

    3. Recent beauty purchase bust? - Clarins Ever Matte. I freaked out on a bad oily day. But all matte is just so not flattering on me :(

    4. Any superstitions you used to practice/observe but now don't? - Opening an umbrella inside, as well. Also my grandma never wanted us girl to sit at the corners of the table, meaning we wouldn't find a husband. I'm starting to think I should have listened :-/

    5. Recent beauty purchase boom? - a REN haul. I received 2 products for my birthday last year, loved them, just ordered more (2 eye creams, a serum and a mask) and I just love everything!
(and no my purchase had nothing to do with the scandalous ad movie, I hadn't seen it yet, not that it shocked my anyway)

  2. Whenever I spill salt I throw a pinch over my left shoulder, and I ALWAYS knock on wood (when I say Knock on Wood).
Sorry about the Bobbi Brown touch up stick - you can have my Cle de Peau one! Too crusty for me.
Agreed on the Jo Malone cream - if it were even $50 I'd think I could scrape together my pennies for it!

    1. Ah. It's OK! Live and Learn. I am certainly NOT going to return it! :-D and yeah. I think even at $50 I might still have an issue buying it. Maybe $45 would be the ceiling.

  3. 1. Lip Of The Day? - ELF hypershine lipgloss in Cherry Tart. Usually I have to wear a lipstick with it, but its one of the most pigmented lipglosses I own. And long wearing: on a good day I can get 4-5 hours from application.
    2. What sort of superstitions do you practice/observe? - Pretty much just knocking on wood and the whole Jinx thing. I have a couple of weird personal ones, too, such as a lucky bracelet I wear on test days and my favorite eyeshadow which I wear on days when I want something good to happen.

    3. Recent beauty purchase bust? - Nothing really... I research stuff pretty well before buying anything and haven't gotten a bust product in about 2 years when I bought a foundation that oxidized worse than anything I've ever seen.

    4. Any superstitions you used to practice/observe but now don't? - Opening an umbrella inside. Once I realized nothing bad was going to happen I stopped. Also black beans on new years. I hate black beans and once I move out of my mothers house I could stop eating them.

    5. Recent beauty purchase boom? - Ugh. I'm on a no buy. It's been 3 months and 2 eyeliners since I bought anything.

  5. LOTD: Lavshuca Dramatic Memory Rouge PK-1. Lavshuca is a Japanese drugstore brand that I really really like right now. Usually I try to steer clear of drugstore brands, but Japanese ones have the quality and the cute to make me love them. This lipstick is one of my favorites. Ever. Even among my high end lipsticks. It's moisturizing, shiny and a great color<3.

Superstitions: Probably just knocking on wood.

Beauty Bust: I can't really remember what the last thing I returned was...I return things semi regularly because I'll read about it and I'll go and swatch it...then I'll wear it and it's awful on me :|

Superstitions: Not that I can think of...

Beauty Boom: Almost everything I got from Lavshuca...I have a bunch of things I still want to get too! Mostly in love with the lipsticks (Dramatic Memory and the Melting whatever one), but the eyeshadows come in a very close second.

  6. In my culture, itchy hands meant someone's going to get a spanking. If you are talking about someone and they drop in unexpectedly (or in this day and age suddenly call you) it means they will live a long time. Weird but there you go for folk beliefs!

  8. 1. My Lip of the Day was Estee Lauder Pure Color lipstick in Plum Fatale.

2 and 4. I can't think of any superstitions I ever practiced, but I have friends that question why I deal with a guy (friend) who has the same first name as a guy I broke up with (bad breakup) years ago. I don't understand that because they are two completely different men. (sighs)

    3. Maybelline Baby Lips in Pink Punch was a recent beauty purchase bust. My lips were stained neon pink all day.

    5. I MAY have a beauty purchase boom with the new Estee Lauder Mad Men collection. I just got the blush (Evening Rose) and lipstick (Cherry). I like how the colors look on me but I want to try them tomorrow to see how they look during the day.

But I have one question--how big were typical 1950s-1960s lipsticks? This lipstick is TINY. The case is about 1/2" by 2". It's cool-looking but the size is freaking me out. If anyone has any words of wisdom, let me know.
