Birchbox April Box - Review and Pictures

I received my April Birchbox last week. Probably Thursday, but honestly the only thing I remember is that I get this box after most people get it, but before some. So as far as delivery times go, it's Just OK.  Last month I wrote about my first Birchbox offering since I re-subscribed.  I originally cancelled my Birchbox subscription last September after receiving lame samples like paper coasters and one string friendship bracelets.  Anyway.  My last Birchbox offering for March was pretty decent.  I ended up writing reviewson the Birchbox website, for several of the products I received.  By writing reviews I was given Birchbox points.  Those points added up and I was able to get $10 off an order I placed through Birchbox for the Detox Tea I was given a sample of last month.  I still enjoy the tea every day and I must say that when you order though the Birchbox website for an item that was sent in that month's boxes, the shipping is free...and fast. I received my order very quickly.  I digress.  Let's talk about this month's box.

The April Birch Box seems focused on the "Earth Day" or "Green" and Natural products.  That's fine.  I'm not a big natural product cheerleader, but I'm cool with some of the products I have tried.

Underneath the Juice Beauty Card (which I found later was empty because they put the sample in with the other small samples in this month's box) I find....

Seriously, Birchbox?

There is nothing glamorous or fun about doing laundry.  If I wanted detergent I wouldn't want it from my BEAUTY SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE.  Now. Let me rant for a bit here. I view getting these boxes as a mini present and an opportunity to indulge and relax with beauty items each month. There is nothing FUN about getting laundry detergent. I don't care if it's "green" because it reduces packaging, leaves a smaller carbon foot print, is formulated for high energy washers, or whatever. I don't want detergent.  Period.  And the women that do get this and this "Oh Neat!" obviously do not have a home where laundry is a never ending cycle. I do laundry two times A DAY. between the Darthypie and Mr. Sith and Floydiepie and myself, We do a lot of laundry.  We might do a bit more than normal because we use dish towels instead of paper towels for most clean ups and we use cloth napkins instead of paper, but jeesh. we are ALWAYS doing laundry. So NO. I do not find getting a laundry sample in my BEAUTY subscription to be good.

OK. Sorry for the tirade.

The other items

Humm. Juice Beauty Oil Free Moisturizer. The juice Beauty card was kind of a harbinger of bad news.  Juice Beauty happens to be one of my least favorite skin care brands. It does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for me. It never delivers on the promises it makes on the labels and I never have good results with any of the products.   I know a lot of people really adore this brand, unfortunately I am not one of them.  Into the sample giveaway giveaway bin it goes.  I hope it will find a home where someone will appreciate it more than I do.

Amika Nourishing Hair Mask.  I have been interested in trying the brand. I have heard good things about it.  The sample will give me one test of the hair mask.  If I choose to purchase it I will be spending $40 for 16.9 oz. I'll try it and see if it's worth it.  Hope it smells nice at least.

I don't have a picture of it, but I received a sample of Taylor Swift's fragrance called Wonderstruck.  So not interested. Tossed.  Moving on....

Last, and I guess not least, I received a small or mini bottle of Zoya Nail Polish in Lotus.  Part of the new TRUE Spring collection. It's a dusty blueish purple with slight shimmer.  Very pretty. So YAY!

All in all, I am NOT thrilled with the April Birchbox.  Had I received the Birchbox that Brooke at Blushing Noir Blog received: J.R. Watkins Hand and Cuticle Salve & willa Gentle Cleansing Lavender Facial Towelettes, instead of the crummy Juice Beauty and expensive conditioner.
I would be singing a different tune entirely.  In fact. If I had received her box of goodies I would be recommending all of you to sign up right away, even before I received my 3rd box.

But I didn't...

So I'm not.

Sorry Birchbox.  You kind hit a foul ball with this box.  Last month was a triple but I'm still waiting for the home run.

(I don't even like baseball!  See what you have done to me with your sub standard boxes Birchbox? You are making me do a sports analogy on my BEAUTY blog.  ::shudders::)

As a FYI, Birchbox does offer a link to its subscribers to allow them to get "credit" if they refer people to sign up for the service.  Since I have yet to determine if this service is worth signing up for, I have NOT included that link. All links to Birchbox in this post will NOT give me credit if you subscribe.  I post this just a word of advice if you read other reviews and they don't indicate if their link is tied to that "referral credit" or not.  As always, I will tell you if there is an affiliate link in any post I have.  If there is a referral link I will also inform you and I will also provide an alternate link that will NOT give me referral credit in that same post.

  2. I got this exact same box this month. Meh. Sick of fragrance samples that are of absolute no appeal whatsoever. One month it was "Ageless" (meant for those who want to smell more youthful) and this month Taylor Swift? I think they're confused: am I a teenager or an old woman?! And I have nothing against Taylor Swift, but come on, not exactly a "luxury brand." Next thing you know, I will be receiving a sample of Justin Bieber's Someday. As for the detergent, I was excited, but only because for the past week I have continually failed to go to the store and buy more...I feel like the Zoya was the only bright spot, but not bright enough to really make up for the rest of the box. Where is the makeup? Not counting nail polish, I have received exactly three makeup products (Lipsurgence, Stila Smudgestick and the BB gloss) in my seven months with Birchbox. Granted, two were full size, but still...I need color!

    1. The lack of color cosmetics is annoying indeed. I wish there was a service that provided more of that AND I wish that cosmetic companies weren't so damn cheap with the samples.

  3. I subscribed to Birchbox and got my first box this month and mine was even crappier than yours. All I got was a 0.16 fl oz (5 ml) sample of Kerastase elixir ultime hair oil, a sample of Jurlique herbal recovery night cream, Viva La Juicy perfume sample, a pair of Show Stoppers fashion tape strips and a tiny, baby pink Color Club nail polish in a shade I wouldn't be caught dead in. Son, I am dissapoint.

    1. OMFG! You're right. Your April box was waaay crappier than mine. How awful. Fashion Tape? Hair Oil? Night Cream (and BTW Jurlique not my fave either)??? Bleh. Sorry. I hope, if you stick w/ it, that next month is better.

  4. I agree about the Juice products. They repeat it so often that I feel like I've tried them all and none of it delivers. I hope that next month is better for you!

  5. I've been a subscriber since September of last year - cancelled for a month, got pissed that I missed out on a BeautyBlender in the one I skipped, so I joined again... sigh! The only box that I have been really impressed with was the Teen Vogue box, but of course, they followed it up with a crappy one this month (I got the exact same box you did.) The Zoya is pretty (and one I wanted to buy anyway), and I've wanted to try the Amika brand, so I guess it wasn't a complete fail. I'll probably cancel again if the Gossip Girl box is crap next month.

    2. Oh Please. Don't worry about that!

    3. Oh and yeah. If my next box is anything like this current one. I will cancel as well. Three strikes and you're out! There I go w/ the baseball analogies again!

  6. I want Brooke's box. I am awaiting my mailman...however after checking the site I am getting BENTA BERRY G-1 Exfoliating Facial Cleanser, Le Palais des Thés Tea Bags - Thé du Hammam, Alima Pure™ Organic Nourishing Lip Balm, willa™ Clear Face Moisturizer, & the Taylor Swift sample.

I'll be doing all of that in a post but ...damn...how different is my box right?

I have the Zoya True collection but if I DIDN'T I'd be pissed. Like....a lot of pissed.

    1. Dude. I feel ya. If I didn't get the zoya and saw that man other did get it. I would be cancelling my subscription before the three box limit I set for myself. Your box is sooo different! WTF?

    2. I don't even know why it's so crazy different. Not awful though but if I didn't have that zoya... Hell to pay.

  7. thank you for the linkage ;)

let me know if you want my answers in my profile! though I've gotten some whoppers of crap as well lol so it's definitely hit or miss!

I got Fashion Tape and a string bracelet before too.. months ago... and I'm telling you what, I'd rather have more laundry detergent lol

  8. Sith, I think you should at least sniff the TS perfume sample. For what is supposed to be a teenybobber scent, it is actually a very well made perfume.

I haven't jumped into the subscription box thing yet, it seems when I am just about to pull the trigger, thats when all the clunkers come out.

    1. JoElla. I'm gonna say this as a friend. Don't Bother. Put $10 a month into a jar, then at the end of the year buy $120 worth of makeup you actually want rather than samples of crap you don't need. Trust me.

  9. Wow my box was so different than yours! I hated my box but would have LOVED the detergent...LOL.

    1. really? You see? It's so hit or miss...and I guess it's impossible for Birchbox to determine who would like the detergent or not. It's a no win situation. LOL

    1. Maybe they are thinking (and really stretching it) that you will be beautiful by having clean clothes? I'd be annoyed too though getting laundry detergent.

I got these godawful stick on eyeliner thingies in a birchbox a while ago. Totally absurd and they seemed like something little girls would want to play dress up with. The excitement of birchbox has left me.

  11. This is exactly why I canceled my subscription. The paper coasters a few months ago were my final straw. I'm just staying away from sample programs for now, since Birchbox was pretty much a landfill-filler-upper for me. I do still subscribe to Beautyfix, which I've found to be pretty awesome.

I was so thrilled with my first Birchbox, but it went downhill so fast I think I only made it about 4 months before I threw in the towel. I spoke with the owner of an organic skin care company who told me she was solicited by Birchbox and sent them literally thousands of deluxe samples, yet I have yet to see them featured in a single box. Meanwhile, you're all getting detergent, coasters, and friendship bracelets. WTF?

  12. My April Birchbox sucked. I got Atelier Cologne, about a ml worth. I don't use fragrance. Marula from the Leakey Collection---Omega Rich Pure Marula Oil. Never heard of it. The only Leakeys I ever heard of are the archeologists, Eddwin (?) and Evelyn. I think they unearthed Lucy, the first female hominid. But don't quote me. I also got a Zoya mini--Farrah. The one I like LEAST. Also a sample sized tube of Weleda Pomegranate Night Firming Cream. I tried it, it's ok. Oh, and something I found useful, YES To Blueberries Brightening Facial Towelettes. I do love these. Otherwise, nothing useful.
I'd have loved the detergent, and one of the other Zoya True colors, Tru or Bevin, those I want.

OK, maybe another month, or else I can use the money on stuff I really want. Like maybe Bevin or Tru.

    1. Marula oil is very similar to argan oil, if anyone is wondering...

  13. I really like Juice Beauty products! The Oil Free Moisturizer is lightweight and leaves my skin feeling amazing! I've tried their Blemish Clearing Serum and I love how it has cleared up my skin!

    1. I'm glad Juice Beauty has worked for you. It has not done one darn thing for me. I have used the serum and oil free moisturizer and didn't have any positive results. :-(

  14. This is why I won't sign up for these box things. I don't want food, I don't want detergent and I don't want gross smelling perfume. Is it really that hard to get samples of actual cosmetics?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Actually. Yes. It is that hard. According to some insiders, the manufacture of sample sized cosmetics is fairly expensive because of having to create new packaging, etc. and thats why many cosmetic companies only give out sample during special promotions. Of course, that could all be a crock of crap.

      Delete
    2. So many companies give out tons of PR samples to big bloggers, so you'd think they might consider throwing a full-sized item into these boxes once in awhile. It wouldn't have to be every month, but I think it would give people more incentive to try these. They could include a lipstick shade that is almost universally flattering, or just a nice basic eye shadow.

I'm glad I read your review because I've considered things like this and MyGlam, but now I'm glad I haven't bothered!

      Delete
    3. The difficulties in getting decent cosmetic samples would, you think, be of significant concern when these companies are working on a business plan. I guess most of them don't think that far ahead, and thus most, I predict, are going to flame out once the current vogue for these subscriptions passes and people have gotten burned too many times.

  15. I also received the exact same box as you. I actually wasn't surprised to see laundry detergent because they always throw something odd in the box it seems. If I didn't get the Zoya polish, I would have hated my box even more. I've been a subscriber since last May and for some reason, I'm still holding on waiting for that "next great box" that will probably never arrive.

    1. Dana: I agree. if the Zoya polish was not in there I would have flipped.

    2. One of the things that finally got me to cancel was realizing I was paying my $10 each month and hoping hoping hoping to get something like a sample size bottle of a Zoya nail polish, and being disappointed most of the time. But a full size Zoya polish is $8! And they frequently have fantastic BOGO promotions. So I could just buy a new nail polish every month with that money, if that's what I really wanted.

  16. I got my first box yesterday, with a mostly different assortment: detergent (agree w/ your comments. Don't want.), Wonderstruck (it's fine - I'm out of perfume so it will hold me until my box from Sephora comes), cuticle/hand balm (awesome), Alima lip balm (awesome), and Junique (sp?) day moisturizer (which is too heavy for day, but smells nice, good size samples, and I can use it at night). I'm pretty happy w/ it and would not have wanted nail polish (never use it). I kind of wanted the face clothes that are showing up in the some of the boxes. Overall, I'm happy.

    1. OOh. See you got nice stuff. I totally would love the cuticle/hand balm. I agree the face wipes would have made this a much better box. I'm so glad you are happy with your box. :-)

  17. WTF birchbox? My box was awesome! I hate Juice beauty, too, and it makes me sad to admit that because they have a lot of vegan products, but unfortunately they suck. And laundrey detergent? NOT COOL. I didn't get that, I got a skincare brand I've never tried and look forward to trying. I love the Zoya polish, but I chucked out the perfume sample, too. It was definitely better than the MyGlam this month, though!

  19. I'd have been irritated by that box as well! I got a completely different one: http://www.noonewatching.com/archives/2012/04/curated_subscription_review_bi.html. Well, except for that gross perfume. Maybe everybody got that. Birchbox is so up and down...I don't feel quite right recommending them anymore, but I don't see a better alternative, either.

  20. My April Birchbox was a bust too. I also received the Juice Beauty moisturizer so I'll definitely use that, and I also got a sample of Dirt luxe salt scrub. There's enough for about 1 arm, but I'll still try it - it has a pretty citrusy smell. I also got the detergent and the perfume sample. I didn't get the nail polish though I would have been happy to get that - the last sample of nail polish I received from Birchbox was zoya, but it was a neon orange that I wouldn't even wear on my toes. I don't even remember the rest of the stuff because I tossed it all. I haven't been happy with Birchbox since the 1st one I received - it's been all downhill from there.

  21. I bet that laundry detergent would remove the hell out of waterproof mascara.* I'm sure that's what they were thinking.

*And your vision, kids. Don't really do that.

  22. I was initially disappointed by my April box but then I realized that's probably because I'd seen other boxes out there with stuff I would have preferred. Wish I'd gotten your nail polish and, don't shoot me for saying this, the laundry detergent. I love trying out new stuff like that even if laundry does qualify as a chore. I recently read about one blogger who got in touch with Birchbox and got some help with tweaking her beauty profile since she wasn't happy with the boxes she was getting either. Might be worth a shot to email them and ask what settings you should have to get boxes more like Brooke's.

    1. Hey man. To each her own. If you like laundry detergent then more power to you! I'm seriously thinking I need to change my profile to march Brooke's. You're right!

  23. I got the laundry detergent (which I thought was kinda cool, but I'm weird that way)
    The Juice beauty Moisturizer(really like!)
A sample of Dirt Luxe salt scrub (really like too!)
sample of Wonderstruck (pretty but generic)
And a FULL SIZE Tarte Lipsurgence in Peaceful SCORE!
My box was pretty good this month. I'll probably have nothing but love in my heart for Birchbox cause of the full size Laura Geller bronzer I received last year.

    1. Oops, I didn't get the Wonderstruck from Birch Box,I
got that as a free sample from Sephora. I got the Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine Petite Cologne Absolue.
It's not my absolute favorite, but unlike the pretty but insipid Wonderstruck it has CHARACTER!

    2. Oooh. The Tarte Full Size is AWESOME!! And the Atelier Cologne sounds nice too. You got an awesome box!

  24. I have the Anika hair oil with argan and absolutely LOVE it. It was expensive but works like a charm and smells fabulous. Hope the conditioning mask works well for you.

  25. I actually like getting the lifestyle products such as the laundry detergent! I only do one load a week though, so it's not onerous to me. I also got the full size Tarte Lipsurgence in Peaceful, the dirt salt scrub, Atelier cologne Orange Sanguine (which I really liked, and I usually hate perfume samples), and the Juice Beauty moisturizer.

I discovered my all time favorite hair oil, Orofluido, through Birchbox. They just me a 20% off 6 month anniversary code so I picked up a few items that shipped free, which makes for a nice savings. They've also sent me two $10 vouchers for a box mistake that didn't even happen to me, which brought my Orofluido cost to a whopping $9.99. I'm a happy Birchbox customer so far:-)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I like how they included the laundry detergent in "Lifestyle Extra," as if even they're acknowledging that it has nothing to do with beauty. And I got the exact same May Birchbox as you did, and we're about the same age.
