Beauty Box 5 May box Review and UPDATE

I'm very confused.  I had originally signed up for Beauty Box 5 with what I thought was a month to month subscription. I received my first box in February and reviewed it HERE. I was less than thrilled.  I was also shocked to see a rep from BB5 leave comments on the review rather than contacting me personally.  It just seemed unprofessional.  Then March came and went, and April came and went and no Beauty Box 5 showed up at my door.  When I went to check on the shipping status of the boxes I saw that no boxes had shipped so I e-mailed customer service:

Message: I signed up in January and received my first box in March.  But  it\'s now April 21st and I haven\'t received my April box.  I also looked  at my transaction history and it looks like nothing has happened since  January.  Was my Monthly subscription cancelled by you?  I would like my April Box. Are you able to send it?

Customer Service e-mailed me back with the following:
Message: It looks like at the time you signed up, you had only signed up for one box.  If you would like to continue your subscription, we can work with you to get you onto a recurring subscription.  Please let us know what you'd like to do so we can help you out!
Thank you! BB5

Ooooohhhhhkkkkaaaayyyy?

Most beauty subscription service have a month to month subscription, which means if you sign up for 1 month, you are sent 1 box but will have the 2nd box sent to you if you don't cancel.  Now BB5 is telling me that somehow I misunderstood the words "Recurring Monthly" written under the various membership options. when I signed up for the MONTHLY $12 A MONTH RECURRING MONTHLY box!  Silly me.  I guess my reading comprehension is not as strong as I thought it was.

You see, when I read the words RECURRING MONTHLY I think BB5 is offering me the option to get a BB5 box every month.  Should I choose to cancel my subscription, I can contact them in the appropriate amount of time before the next box is sent out and I should not expect to be charged for more boxes.  This is pretty clear right?

According to the  BB5 FAQ it states under "Payment, Shipping & Cancellation" it states:
"What is your cancellation policy?
You can cancel your subscription at any time. Be sure to cancel your subscription before your next payment is processed if you no longer wish to receive a Beauty Box the following month."

Ah ha!  But you see. I was told via e-mail that I only signed up for one month.  You see. Customer Service said " It looks like at the time you signed up, you had only signed up for one box."  So I didn't think I needed to cancel my subscription since I allegedly signed up for one box.

Now comes May and I get an e-mail the my BB5 box has shipped.

WTF?

I thought I was only getting one box.  That's what Customer Service said.  I got that e-mail on a Friday and received the package on a Saturday. (Hey! Fast Shipping or Slow notification)  Either way.  you can imagine how surprised I was to receive THIS BB5 box after a) being told my original subscription was for just one box (ignoring the recurring monthly gobbledygook on the BB5 website)  and b) I had NOT received boxes for the previous 2 months?  I thought I was free and clear.  They just charge me all over again?

That my dear readers is pure and utter crap.

What's worse, their website is annoying. It's not easy to navigate, when I click on "enter" or "submit" it does not always respond.  There is no way to change or delete the credit card associated with your account. There is a tiny teeny box on the transaction history page that claims you can click to unsubscribe, (which I did) but I have YET to receive confirmation that this has successfully gone through.

I wish I had never ever signed up for this service.  Not only do they have my CC info and I can't delete it, the samples are laughable.  I'm not even sure I should even discuss what was in the box that they sent, which I unknowingly paid for.   I opened it because I figured I had already paid for it.  Oh man. Same random brands I have never heard of. Same lackluster packaging. Same old same old.  I would definitely NOT recommend signing up for this service. You should read the comments people leave on the BB5 Facebook page.  It's not just me that is displeased with this service. Oh, and the BB5 Facebook page doesn't even allow readers to post on their wall, you have to leave a comment under a post that BB5 has put up. That's shady.

UPDATE!  UPDATE!  UPDATE!  UPDATE!  UPDATE!
I finally heard back from Beauty Box 5 Customer Service. They apologized for the error and refunded my money!  They said "Also-we had a small system error with cancellations.  this has been corrected and your account has been corrected."
Thank you.
I still don't recommend Beauty Box 5 in the least bit. Even though they refunded my money, the samples they send are so NOT worth it.

  2. Oh, man... what a fuster cluck....I have been wary of these "monthly" things since I fist heard of them.... thus far they seem to be as enjoyable as that Other Monthly Visitor....

Bummer that they'ver got all your CC info - I'd get ahold of my CC company and tell them no further charges from these chowderheads should be approved..

Hope it gets cleared up soon!

    1. TOTALLY. I'll wait to hear back from them and if they don't respond, which I think they will, I'll let my bank know.

  3. Lots of these monthly things are great--Beauty Box 5 is TERRIBLE. I was so disgusted with my first box that I emailed them asking it it was a mistake and something had been left out, and then they made me wait another month to cancel, so I got a second box that was even worse! This one is definitely not worth anybody's time or money. I predict they'll put themselves out of business quickly.

    1. I know, right? I thought my first box was a mistake at first. I don't see them being around much longer.

  4. This is why I'm so leery of recurring charge type services. I'm sure we've all had trouble with things like this in the past. Thanks for the warning about these guys!

  6. The cat had me choking once I saw it. Perfect placement, understandable for all levels of reading comprehension!

It's ridiculous the number of sample box programs out there and that shady ones such as these drag the whole idea down. Balls I say! Balls.

  7. Okay so now I'm pretty interested in seeing what they actually sent...you should show us! So far the only monthly subscription services that I've found to be worth it are Birchbox (which can be iffy, but their point-earning system is their saving grace), Julep & NewBeauty Test Tube. I'm still mad at MyGlam for turning out to be so crappy! It really burns me that you know the only reason their 1st bag was so good was b/c Urban Decay was revamping their packaging so MyGlam probably got the shadows w/the old packaging at a great discount (and fooled everyone into thinking that'd be the norm)

  8. Posts like this are what make you stand out among beauty bloggers. I love your refreshing willingness to call a spade a spade. And I just about died laughing at the Cookie Monster WTF.

  10. I had a shady experience with them too. I did a rather positive post on my box from them but I think I was just pleased because I didn't get the absolute crap I had gotten with other subscription services. But then I read some other reviews and realized that I shouldn't have brushed off how shady their website is, how unprofessional their customer service is, and how not-great their products are. I ended up canceling and didn't receive a box this month so that hopefully means a good thing. Their website is an absolute joke too. I'm glad you're spreading the word.

  12. I admit I had to go back and read the first review. As someone majoring in PR I was shocked that the rep left comments. As you said should have contacted you directly. Next I thought the Intergalactic Pink Sith Besuty Box was a great idea. I'd buy it just for the glossy black box with the pink Sith head.

  13. Makes me iffy about ordering this kind of stuff, although I am super curious about product sampling. I might take a risk with another one, but thanks for the heads up on Beauty Box!

  14. Am I the only one that not interested in monthly beauty boxes from any service? I don't know the idea never interested me, even with offers of a review for my blog. I know alot do like the services via other sites just not for me. Funny post though!!:-))

  15. Well that's damn ballsy to imply that you don't understand the concept of "recurring monthly". All these sample boxes seem so disappointing and I think I'd rather save my money each month to get something I want. I understand that you get a certain "value" of product in each box, but if I don't use or enjoy any of it, it's just a waste.

  17. Great pics, Elvira. Please, please, call your bank if you haven't already. Report these jerks asap. And please, if you receive another box (after you dispute the charge) show us what 'lovely items' they sent you this time. I almost choked on my coffee at the cat pic. ;+)

  18. Keep us updated on this - I'm really curious as to how it turns out!

  19. I canceled MyGlam today, and was looking at BB5 as an alternative. Yikes? I guess I'll look a bit further. Thanks for the review.

  20. LOL oh dear how frustrating! :( I love the "success" pic at the end! :) there are a few similar box services in Australia but I don't subscribe; I'd rather save the $ to spend on stuff I know I'll use! Agree with an earlier commenter that you should change your CC details... good luck! X

  21. I would venture a guess that, most possibly, they didn't like or want your reviews every month, so they cancelled your subscription, double secret-like, and then backed it up with an excuse that it was their "server." It's a great excuse, as there's no real way for you to call them liars. From all you said, it doesn't seem like a nice company.
