It's Friday! You know what that means? Time to talk foundation here on The Pink Sith Blog. This week I have a foundation that I once thought was a FAIL, but discovered I had the wrong color, went back got the right color and now it is a WIN! Why can't I say anything succinctly? How about. This week I bring you a Foundation FAIL that I was able to turn into a WIN! No. Because technically I didn't "turn it into a WIN" All I did was get the right color. This week I bring you...CoverGirl NatureLuxe Silk Foundation.
First off. WTF is up with CoverGirl combining all their words. Cover [space] Girl. Nature [space] Luxe. Seriously!? OK. Introduced in early 2011 The CoverGirl NatureLuxe Silk Foundation promises a lightweight feel and a hint of jojoba and cucumber extract. But does it deliver?
Heck yes. This foundation feels like a tinted moisturizer but covers like a foundation. It have a smooth dewy finish and imparts an airbrushed look to skin (If applied correctly). The coverage is medium and with proper blending could be applied for a heavier coverage look. It did not cake or collected in my pores. it looked PERFECT! With a SFP of only 10, it's not even close to protecting your skin from sun damage, but that's OK. I'd rather use a separate SPF with this foundation. Why? Because I have oily skin and this foundation is not made for oily skin. It's more for normal, combination and dry skin. Using my sunscreen makes my skin more combination, which in turn makes this foundation wearable for me.
The foundation comes in a recyclable plastic squeeze tube with a simple nozzle dispenser. The tube has the same "green" "natural" look to it and it's fairly small but contains as much product as other CoverGirl foundations.
Now why was this a FAIL at first? Well I had taken the recommendation of G from
Nouveau Cheap and picked up this one. She recommended it to me for the color and the exceptional finish, but I had picked up the wrong shade.. I had picked up the lightest shade available at my woefully understocked CVS #310 Flax and thought it looked OK. When I got home I applied it and found it to be too orangey-pink but with a lot of blending near the neck and jawline I managed to make it work....that was until I looked in my rear view mirror. Oh my. Whilst backing out of my driveway I was shocked to see a VERY oompa loompa looking Pink Sith staring back at me. Even with my attempt to blend properly I could not get this foundation to look right on me. I never wore it again. It went into a basket where all my unloved foundations and BB creams go. I'm not sure what I'm saving them for, but one day, One day I will have a use for them.

So when I started doing this series I thought to myself I should really take another look at this foundation. But G was so wrong about the color...or was she? No. I was wrong. I looked on line and discovered that I had picked up the 2nd lightest shade. #305 in Alabaster was the lightest shade. I rushed out to purchase the CORRECT color immediately. Well wouldn't you know it? G was right! (Of course she was, she always is!) This shade of foundation (#305) is a near perfect match to my pale a$$ skin. Whoot! I was now able to wear and test this foundation without looking like a reject from Jersey Shore!
The verdict? It's really nice! I mean REALLY nice! I mean as nice as some department store foundations I have used. OK. I'll just say it. It is as nice if not almost exactly like Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. It's on oar with that and the Armani is probably my favorite foundation ever. Good coverage, nice color, great feel, wonderful finish...it's all that! A definite WIN!
Do you NEED this? If you have normal to dry or possibly combination skin then YES! Oily skinned gals better have an awesome primer that stops oil all day to really make this one work. I can wear this foundation in the winter better than in the summer (of course, with my oily mug!). I really like this one a lot. It does have a scent and it is a tad strong, but I either got used to it or is dissipated quickly. It retails for approximately $11 USD so it won't kill your wallet either!
Have you ever used this foundation? What was your experience with it?

P.S. As a bonus, here is a picture of my dog. When I was taking pictures of this foundation I had to plug in my lamp. The plug happens to be near my dog, Floydiepie's bed. Whenever I plug this lamp in and he is in his bed, he gets annoyed and stares at me until I unplug it. One I unplug it he goes back to sleep. Floyd is basically furniture. He doesn't move unless he is being fed or I plug in that lamp.
They make it in Alabaster??? I had the same problem you did with Flax being the lightest shade I could find and being too orange and dark for me. I mixed it w/a lighter foundation and made it work (and it does feel lovely and never broke me out or sank into dry patches) but man, I've never seen this shade!!!
ReplyDeleteI know, right?! I wonder if they came out with Alabaster later on. It certainly wasn't available when it first came out near me.
DeleteYou are the creator of foundation lemmings! Now I want to try this!
ReplyDeleteLOL! I live to create lemmings!
DeleteI've been wanting to try this for ages, but could not figure out what color to buy. Does anyone know of any site with swatches of the color choices?
ReplyDeleteI don't know of any sites but try a google image search.
DeleteAlabaster is my Holy Grail foundation. I have three back-up tubes . . . just in case. Oddly, I like it best applied with a kabuki brush, which gives me an airbrushed finish.
ReplyDelete3 back ups! That's awesome. I like the kabuki brush application as well. It looks very nice that way.
DeleteI did the same thing.. in fact I think I bought it after reading that same review, lol. Stupid me I bought the second or third lightest shade when I should have gotten the absolute lightest. I could tell the foundation was lovely, but I couldn't wear it because it's way too orange. Haven't had the cash to buy the proper shade yet. Woe is me :(
ReplyDeleteOh well. one day you will have the $$ to buy the proper shade. I hate when I get the wrong color. I feel like it's such a waste, especially when you can't return it. :-/
DeleteThis sounds like something I need in the short term, since I started a new regime for my acne/oily skin with my dermatologist and it's drying the hell out of my skin. Great review btw!
ReplyDeleteOh yes. your drier skin will adore this!
DeleteAww I think that is the tricky part about buying drugstore foundation, choosing your perfect shade! I can stand there for a good 30 minutes or longer trying to decide between the two or even three that I think might match me. I'm glad you found yours and that it works well for you. Btw your dog is hilarious! hehe
ReplyDelete:-) Thanks. Floyd is a bit of a nut, but I love him. Yeah. DS foundations are tricky!
DeleteHi pink sith.. I stumbled upon ur site searching for red lipsticks... really love your blogging style and such a useful blog. ANd love ur dog by the way. Adorable! Kepp up the good work!
ReplyDeleteXO
Vidhya
Welcome!!! And thank you! And Floyd thanks you as well. :-)
DeleteThanks for the review & swatches! I'd like to give this a try. I never have much luck with foundations, but #305 looks like it might work! Your dog is so cute :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hope it works for you too. Floyd knows he is cute. ;-)
DeleteI've made that mistake too! You think you have the lightest shade only to discover they were out all along and you have to go to another CVS etc. to get the lightest one...g'ah! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not alone in the mixed up foundation thing.
DeleteI was just comparing the ingredients listed here with the ingredients in inglot YSM cream foundation, and see they both contain Sodium Chloride. I wonder what possible benefit salt can have to the skin? Or what it does for the foundation? Off to google that!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review, I'm surprised to hear you like a Drug Store foundation, I might have to try it!
Hi! Sodium Chloride increases the thickness of the water portion of cosmetics. I like any foundation that matches my skin tone. :-)
DeleteSo for oily skinned gals, will a simply mattifying primer be enough to make this foundation work? In the past, anything other than Estée Lauder Double Wear will melt off my face in a few hours! But there are days where u want a lighter coverage...
ReplyDeleteI think so. I have used 2 different mattifying primers underneath and had decent results. It won't last all day, but it certainly wont slide off your face in just a couple of hours. Have you tried using Philips Milk Of Magnesia as a primer yet? It really works well. I have to do a post about that!
DeleteThis is one of my favorite foundations too! It's one of the best drugstore options for dry to combination skin. Glad you found your perfect match!
ReplyDeleteYAY!! glad you love it too!
DeleteI picked this up on a whim sometime in 2011 and was blown away by the quality, coverage, and lasting finish. This has the perfect "dewy, not shiny" finish and doesn't seem to clog my pores (unlike my other "every day" tinted moisturizer, Clinique's BB cream). I too am "beyond the pale" and Alabaster is the perfect cool-with-a-hint-of-yellow that evens out my skin tone without making me look dead. So tickled you love it too!!
ReplyDeleteYes! I'm so happy with it!
DeleteThanks for the review and ingredient list! And for the warning, haha. I'll have to look out for this Alabaster!
ReplyDeleteAnd that story about your dog and the lamp is hilarious. They're so picky sometimes! Our dog grumbles when it's bed time and we don't look like we're going to bed any time soon...he's a morning dog, though, so he's bouncing around at 6 AM and out like a light by 8:30 PM!
Aww. your dog dounds like mine. He does the "Isn't it time to go to bed" grumble too! Fortunately my dog is not a morning dog. He sleeps most of his life. LOL
DeleteSo, as you know since you were the one that gave me MUFE #15, I am pale. Alabaster was too dark for me once it set, but I'm glad you like it!
ReplyDeleteDUDE! WTF? You have some pale ass skin! LOLOLOL
DeleteBelieve it or not, I think I tried this last year and Alabaster was too dark for me, too :/ I really do look like the living dead. If I didn't have roseacea (mild, thank G-d), I'd have no color at all. And.....I live in Florida. In a cave. And the dog story is a riot. "he's a piece of furniture." At least he's happy. ^^
ReplyDeleteAww. Paler than Alabaster? Yikes. It must be difficult finding a foundation match. And yes. My dog is an ottoman/foot rest.
DeleteThis stuff was a decent color match for my pale skin too, but it broke me out :/ And I do have overly sensititve skin, BUT a foundation claiming to be "natural" shouldn't do that, really. Lots of people seem to like it though
ReplyDeleteOooh. Sucks about the break out. I wonder if it was the Talc. Talc can clog pores can cause breakouts in some people. :-(
DeleteDearest Pink Sith:
ReplyDeleteI'm generally just a lurker, but when I saw this all I could think was MUST SHOW PINK SITH.
http://offbeatmama.com/2011/09/darth-vader-princess-costume
I hope you enjoy :).
OMG!!!!! I LOVE THAT COSTUME! If I had a girl I would totally make this for her.
DeleteFlax is the perfect colour for me and I looove this foundation! I was surprised at how many negative reviews I read when it first came out.
ReplyDeleteWell you know. Hype preceeds the foundation and if it isn't a miracle worker people give negative reviews. I see that happen a lot.
DeleteWhen I wear liquid foundation, this is what I use most often. It's a bit more moisturizing than I would like, but it looks nice and doesn't break me out so I just powder mid day and hope for the best. I'm a bit darker than you and seem to fit best with Dune.
ReplyDeleteSweet! I glad it works for you too!
DeleteI wore CoverGirl foundation *years* ago, and while I liked it overall, the "Noxzema" smell really put me off (and I am *not* typically sensitive to smells in makeup), so I stopped wearing them. Could someone *please* let me know if the scent is still there? TIA
ReplyDeleteThat Noxzema smell you are talking about..Yeah, I have smelled that before. That scent is not there in this foundation. It is fruity/flowery scent but not like that Noxzema scent. Which I think the blushes still have.
DeleteUpdate: I got this the other day, and chose #310, Flax for my N20 skin. It's not too dark and not too light, though it's a touch pinker than my usual foundation, which is Armani Designer in #5. I like the formula a lot, not too oily, not drying. It's even better with a little primer underneath to avoid adhering to flaky spots. I find it has exceptional wear throughout the day, and I like the light floral scent, which reminds me of a Lancome tinted moisturizer I used to use. I also like that it's a tube, so it's easy to transport.
ReplyDeleteOOoh. Nice to know! You must be bordering on the edge of NC25 if you can Wear Armani #5. Sounds like you have a winner w/ the CG foundation. :-)
DeleteAs a foundation expert (or at least, more expert than my own inept ass) I need your help! Based on this review, I bought this foundation, and it is everything you say re: awesomeness.
ReplyDeleteMy problem? My face is apparently several different shades of beige. I'm paler on my forehead and cheeks by my hairline, and darker on my chin, nose, and inner cheeks. It's not noticeable/bizarre-looking IRL but when I apply makeup to match the center of my face, it's too dark at my hairline; if I match the skin at the hairline, the center of my face is too pale.
How do I cope with this? Plz to be helping! <3
I', sorry I haven't responded until yet. I have been thinking about how to solve your problem. I think of 2 options.
Delete1) Match the foundation to the darkest parts of your face since that's in the center and blend outward and not apply as heavily to the forehead cheeks and hairline
or
2) Match the lightest part of your skin w/ the foundation and use a contouring powder or bronzer to warm up the chin and nose that look too light.
Hope that helps. But I am certainly not an expert on color correction. Sorry. :-/
i like this! i wanted to buy online but was not sure of shade, so i waited til i found a counter. and that was in manila early this year, and it cost me equivalent #20. yikes. BUT it's a good match. i am around nc 20-25 in mac, yellow toned, and my match for this is 340 maple.
ReplyDeletebtw, i love that you reply to comments, elvira. a few of my fave bloggers have seemed to cease blogging. yours is one of the older blogs that i've been reading, and its comforting to find you are still here and being hilarious. love ya!
Hi Lenita:
DeleteThanks for the compliment! I try to respond to comments as quickly as I can but sometimes I forget. :-/ I'll be here as long as blogging is still fun. As soon as it becomes a "job" I'm gonna have to hang it up. Know what I mean?
I'm a newbie here! Can you tell me which color you are with the Luminous Silk Foundation?
ReplyDeleteI'm a 3.75, just wondering what natureluxe color I'd be before I go buying the wrong ones @_@
Hehe
I'm a 3.75 too! So you would be #305 in the cover girl foundation!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy I found this foundation, all thanks to your blog! I never liked wearing foundation, and after several mishaps with poor color matches in high school (even after consultations with "beauty experts"), I never thought I'd find something I liked. I'd been experimenting with BB creams, but I found the coverage wasn't to my liking. I ended up picking this up #325 (Sandstone) and it blends like a dream! It really is the perfect tinted moisturizer/foundation combo (in terms of consistency.) And at such a fantastic price, I think I'm in love!
