Sally Girl Mini Liquid Liner in Brownish Black - Review, Pictures, Swatches

I am a liquid liner fanatic. I wear it almost every day. I'm sure I look fine without it, but for some reason I feel compelled to add it to my daily routine.  Since I have been wearing it for DECADES, I consider myself a bit of an advanced user.  I can line with the best of them. I am only limited by my crepe-y eyelids which I have nothing but genetics to blame for that.

Anyway. When I set out on my $20 Face Challenge for the recent Makeup Wars battle I had resigned myself to having to use a pencil liner because I thought getting a liquid liner would be rather expensive on my limited budget. When I walked into Sally Beauty Supply, imagine my surprise when I saw they had a mini liquid liner for only $0.99!  I guess the lighting in the store was kinda crap because I picked up the liner in Brownish Black rather than Jet Black.  Oh well. I can use a brown liquid liner with my mostly warm golden taupe shadows, I thought to myself.

But then I opened the liner (when I got home) and looked at the brush.

Look at this brush!

LOOK AT IT!

How is anyone supposed to EFFECTIVE line their eyes with that abomination they call a brush?

Aside from the obvious deformation at the end, the brush itself is too long and it's floppy.

A floppy eyeliner brush will just not please a woman. No woman likes a floppy eyeliner brush. We can't do anything with a floppy eyeliner brush.  We like a firm, stiff brush for lining our eyes.  Stiff eyeliner brushes are the best!  They really satisfy! When a brush that was once stiff goes floppy, we have no use for it.  That's just a fact of life.

Do you NEED this?  Hell No!  Save your 99 pennies.  Even the swatches suck when using this brush.  Oh and yes, I used my trusty MAC 210 Precise Eyeliner Brush for application to my eye and the liner still looked like a streaky mess. I wish I had purchased a nice big pencil liner. That would have been the climax of my $20 face look!

  3. Once again your review was both informative and hilarious. Wow, thats pretty terrible. I also love me some liquid liner and am always on the hunt for a good cheap one, but have yet to find one. I hate floppy liner brushes. They are the worst. It makes applying it impossible.

What is your favorite liquid eyeliner?

    1. Thanks!
My favorite liquid liner is the Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Liner in Perversion My 2nd favorite is a cake liner from Chanel called La Ligne de Chanel I use my MAC 210 Precision eye liner brush with it.

    3. I forgot to ask..have you tried the Laura Mercier cake liner before? If you did what did you think?

    4. You're welcome! I have tried the LM cake liner in the past, but only in Navy blue and it was rather disappointing. It was really sheer and hard to build up color. However I think the black cake liner is supposed to be great. I'll never know because it takes me years to finish a cake liner. My Chanel one is still going strong. :-)

    5. I would be getting black or brown. I'm not brave enough to try colored liner. I saw a video and in it the girl applied the black laura mercier cake liner, and it looked promising. I'm trying to find something a little less dramatic then my typical liquid liner for during the day, but will still give me some definition and make my sad lashes look thicker.

    1. It truly is. I have no idea what they were thinking. Perhaps. "Hey it's 99 cents screw em!" LOL

  5. haha, nice...FYI, e.l.f. has a liquid liner that's pretty decent, I think. I say I think because it swatched nicely but then I dropped it all over myself and my white bed sheets, which pissed me off so I threw it away. BUT it stained my shirt and sheets, so I bet it's got killer wearing power :)

  6. OMG I loved this review, I'm still laughing. Concerning cheap brands Essence does EXCELLENT eyeliners. I have the liquid eyeliner and the gel one and they're both great, especially the gel one. It lasts all day and it's really black. The brown is also beautiful. They'ro so acessible and good I think I'm getting the green and purple as well.

    1. I was looking for an essence eyeliner as I heard good things about them. However, my local ULTA is woefully understocked when it comes to essence cosmetics so when I went to purchase it the shelf was empty. :-( Thanks for the tip tho!

    1. Well I have been told that the one from Essence (sold at ULTA) is inexpensive and fairly good. You might check that out. If my ULTA ever stocked it I would try it for sure.

    2. darn, I don't have an ULTA near me or i'd try it too :(

  9. I very much LOL'd at this post. That is a very crummy-looking brush but I guess for 99 cents....yeah.

  10. Wow, not only is that brush a fail, but that color is a little too much like liquid poo. If you ever can locate Essence, the liners really are good. Watch out for the gel, you gonna be wearing it for a straight up week.
