Birchbox September Box - Review and Pictures

Birchbox September Box

I'm really not sure what to think about this month's Birchbox.  I am not thrilled with the contents.

Here is the box when I opened it.

Birchbox September Box

Here is the box when I unwrapped everything

Birchbox September Box

Here are close ups of everything I got.

A cobalt Blue. If I didn't already have a cobalt blue polish from Nails, Inc I might have been excited. But I do, so I'm not.

At least it is a decent size to see if it will work for me.  Alas, more skincare is not really what I need, but I dig it.

Tiny Sample. Too Dark for my pale ass skin.  Oh well.

Um. OK. I guess these are cool for when I travel.  Except it's now Fall and my travel days are done for a while. I have seen reviews for these kind of brush guards before. They are very useful.  I would need about 10 packages of them for ALL my brushed and that would run me about $55.  Perhaps I can use them for little trips where I don't need more than 4 brushes....buwahahah.  Who am I kidding?  I always need more than 4 brushes!

Fekkai Salon Technician Color Care Shampoo & Conditioner

Really? A sample packet?  Not even a mini bottle of the stuff?  I get these sample packets for free from Sephora and Drugstore.com.  Lame.

My face after seeing the twistband Hair Tie

Last time I checked I did not graduate from Clemson, University of Tennessee, University of Texas or University of Florida. All these school use this wretched orange and that would be useful I'm sure.  Me?  I graduated from a college with Burgundy & Gold colors.  JUST LIKE THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS!!! I have no need for this orange calamity in my hair.  Plus I have received at least 2 or 3 of these stupid twist ties in the past from Birchbox and I have each time told them that I think this is a sucky "lifestyle extra".

I'm not thrilled with this month's Birchbox.  Will I cancel my subscription?  Nope.  I still feel that Birchbox has the best subscription box around.  Their Customer Service has always been good to me.They ship quickly and I have found several items that I now use regularly because they sent me a sample.  I would still recommend them, even if this months box is less than exciting.

I have provided my referral link HERE.  As I have said in the past, signing up for Birchbox through my referral link will get me referral points which I can use toward purchases from the Birchbox store. So far, this is the only beauty subscription service where I have shared my referral code.  I have provided my referral code only once in his post.  (Located above with the "HERE" designation) Throughout the rest of this post I have used non referral links to Birchbox.  If you choose not to sign up though my referral code, I'm totally OK with that. The non-referral Birchbox links in the post will not give me any points or special favors from the company if you decide to click on them.

I also maintain that saving $10-$15 a and then using it at the end of the year or every 6 months to buy one super, ultra, mega awesome item is better than all the sample boxes in the world. That's just my opinion.

So what do you think of the box I received this month?
If you also receive a Birchbox. How similar was your box?  Did you like yours?

  1. I agree that the boxes suck this month. And I think I'm getting the stupid rose gold polish...the last thing I need is yet another gold polish. I don't need the brush guards. I am getting the same face brightener. At least I like the twistband.

In regards to the Dr Jart, I am super super pale (I take the lightest shade in just about every foundation I've tried), but the Dr Jart works well for me. It looks too dark in the tube but not when I put it on.

    1. OK. I'll try it. It looked so dark. Thanks for the tip!

  2. I spent the same amount on Avon's website, shipping included, and got five wonderful discontinued products that I can use, daily or weekly. No contest!

  3. I received the same box. It was make it or break month for my relationship with Birchbox and sadly I'm underwhelmed. I've gotten way too many foil packs lately.

I'm super pale as well. I have to agree the Dr. Jart's looks much darker in the tube than it does on my skin.

    1. thanks for the feedback on the Dr. Jart. If this was a make it or break it month for me I would have unsubscribed from the service for sure.

  4. I got a ziploc bag. A ZIPLOC BAG!!! Like those I use to freeze food in. Just...with patterns (?!).
And yes, I agree, the samples are getting smaller and smaller. I know it's $10 a month and we can't expect full size Shu Uemura, but come on.

    1. OH MY GAWD! I got one of those awful ziploc bags a few months ago. USELESS! I might have unsubscribed if I got those bags again!

  5. I haven't gotten mine yet, but I cheated and looked on the website to see what I was getting and I'm not too impressed either.

  6. *sigh* Mine isn't here yet but it looks like I'll be calling it quits with BB and saving the money. I do use the Dr. Jart's which I bought after I tried a sample BB sent me...but I bought it at Sephora, instant gratification! lol A mini would come in handy though for touch ups on the go. I have thrown out every hair tie I've gotten, it slips right off my hair. useless. The brush guards though might come in handy. I can only hope.

    1. Hopefully the brush guards work, and if you unsubscribe you can save your $$ :-)

    2. I have a few packs of the brush guards and they do work surprisingly well. Your brushes take a little longer to dry, but in my opinion they do come out better shaped.

  7. At least there were no stupid perfume samples! I'm looking forward to my box... Crossing fingers I get the rose gold or steel grey nail color. Which means I'll get the Chartreuse.

    1. I got the chartreuse :( I'm pale and that color does absolutely nothing for me!

    2. You will get the chartreuse for sure now!

    3. Praise be to the makeup goddess... I got the steel grey color! Hallelujah!

However, I also got the orange hair tie. I dye my hair a red color.... should look awesome, right?

  8. I haven't even gotten mine yet and this look depressing! I love your face after seeing the twist band, priceless. Is it sad I'm kind of hoping to get brush guards..?.. I know what you mean though when can I ever use just 4 brushes, like never.

  9. OMG I love your meme-style picture. STFUBBQ. Thank you for the chuckle!

  10. This was my second go with BB and OMG it sucked! Your box was awesome compared to mine. Like the commenter above I received the lovely zip loc bag. WTF???? And I got the hair tie but in purple. I am not expecting like full size stuff here but my lord what I got this month was a joke, a very bad joke. Just went to cancel my subscription. I really hate to because I so look forward to the surprise but so far it's been such a let down. I think about trying the other companies but I'm too broke to be honest. Oh well.

  11. I know it's only $10 and we mostly pay for the surprise, but the ziploc bag IS a joke :)
I did get some stuff I was happy with before and I still use it.

    1. Total joke. Glad you have stuff from them before that you like tho!

  12. I love the idea of these sample boxes but in reality, I think you are better off just buying at a place that will give you samples when you buy stuff.

  13. Shame the BB is too dark for you, it's a lovely product (and I had a sample tube of it and a little goes a LONG way so give it to someone else fo shiz.) And that hair tie is very odd!

    1. Well apparently I didn't give it a good enough test so it might not be too dark. We'll see.

  15. I got the exact same box. I would have preferred the rose gold polish, instead of the blue that I won't wear. But I do like the face brightener and bb cream. The shampoo/conditioner isn't enough for my hair, so I'll never use it. I'll never use the brush guards either, but I found a friend who wanted them.

The worst IMO was the hairtie. I actually wear my hair in a ponytail a lot, and thought I'd give it a shot for working out. Let me take a moment to say I have thick hair that frequently breaks hairties. This one was only able to go around my pony twice, and then, it didn't even hold it moderately tight. It just sagged. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough hairtie to actually loop it around a third time. I gave it to my cat. He enjoys batting it around, so I guess that's good.

    1. My thoughts on the hair tie exactly! Luckily I got my hair thinned out about two weeks ago otherwise my hair would have just eaten and I would have never seen it again. Who wants a sagging ponytail? Not me! I'll see if my cat enjoys it.

    2. Ah. I never thought of giving it to my cat! Excellent Idea! I think I shall leave that feedback w/ birchbox. :-)

  16. Mine hasn't arrived yet! But as a person who is usually in the road I do appreciate the shampoo & conditioner foil packets. I'm not super thrilled about this month but mine comes (so says the website) with 7 samples which wil be $7 credit when I leave feedback. So for the $3 that will be the cost for me I'm in love with this month box. I do love the hair ties (I can't have enough of them!)I'm supposed to get the yellow nail polish so not sure what I'm going to do with it!

    1. Truth! While on travel the shampoo & Conditioner foil packets are great. Well, we'll see if you get the chartreuse nail polish. That color shown in the "what's in my box" section of the Birchbox website, but I still got blue. Which isn't a bad color at all. I just already have one that color and I don't need a dupe.

  18. That WTF face is priceless! Back to the BB, I cancelled my subscription after about 4 months and now subscribe to your theory: saving the $10 every months and buying something I really want. Still saving the $10 a month to. Sometimes it has to be spent on cat food (I have 6), but that's a need. Cosmetics are a want. Although some people would think differently when they see me. Oh well. If you don't like the way I look, it's your problem, not mine. ;+)

    1. First of all as long as you don't look like the Predator from the movie of the same title you're not in "need" of makeup. Secondly, you're smart to save your money and use it for things you NEED versus WANT. Too many people are spending irresponsibly and just buying stuff they want rather than saving for things they need. :-)

  19. I have really short hair and I HATE those hair ties! Do NOT want! But I do want that cobalt polish so I hope I got that color. And yeah, shampoo packets = way cheap b/c I get them free in magazines, too.

    1. Yeah. Hair ties are not as useful as Birchbox would like to think!

  20. We (finally!) have a beauty box too in Belgium. The Deauty box. I received my first one last week and I'm already excited about the next one :-) As long as they don't put a hair tie in it... :-p

  21. It's just sort of... eh. They've sent me like three of those ponytail holder thingies. They don't do anything for my long, thick, heavy hair. I hate it when they send a tiny sample of a face product (they sent me a microscopic Jouer sample once). I'm not going to buy it after trying it ONCE. JS. Thanks for sharing!

  22. I have 2 little girls, which makes my BB a score most of the time, because whatever happens to be lame to me is usually amazing to them (printed zipper bag became awesomely special lego set holder). So this month: printed Band-Aid (girls get it), hair tie (girls get it if it's a stupid color or doesn't work for me...or they just beg for it), Kate Spade Twirl perfume sample (I'm okay with it), Dr. Jart (I'll give it a go), nail color (we have such an overflow of nail color that I'm just like, whatever..., Benefit facial cleaner and Benefit facial polish (I love to try out skin care in my search for the Holy Grail, so yay.). Worth the $10 for me. Perhaps you should all adopt a few little girls who will squeal with delight over any of your BB overflow? Then at least you get smiles and "thank you"'s for the crap you don't really want. One man's junk...

    2. I need a baby girl first. My son does not appreciate makeup samples or anything like that. Oh well. at least my cat got a kick out of the hair tie. I LOVE your suggestions tho!

  23. Ok, I peeked online. Looks like I"m getting the crappy tie but I'm getting the brush guards so that's a plus. Yes, the requisite perfume sample in Bvlgari Jasmine Noir which is not so bad b/c I'd actually like to try it. Some WEI cleanser/tint which I've never heard of. Never know, might be interesting. The Vasanti & nail polish too (hopefully not the ugly colors I saw). Let's see if anything works for me. I did appreciate some months back getting a Beauty blender sponge and its cleanser so sometimes the BB is useful.

    1. I agree. Sometimes you do get really useful things from BB, but not as often as I would like.

  24. I have to second the "looks dark in the tube but not on the skin" for the Dr. Jart. I'm lighter than MAC NC/NW 15 and it adjusts really well. You just have to leave it on for a few minutes. I use it in place of light foundation/tinted moisturizer; I found it's buildable and gives better coverage than most BB creams out there.

Oh--and I'm not sure how it'd fare on your oily face, but I use it for all-day outdoor volleyball tournaments (since sweat + repeated applications of even face-specific sunscreen will break me out) and that stuff STAYS PUT. I have normal skin, though.

I say give it a shot.

    1. I tried it on my hand and it still looked dark. Hopefully soon I'll use it on my actual face to see how it really holds up. :-)

  25. The Vasanti BrightenUp! is actually really good. I got a 12g sample from a different beauty box several months ago and I still have some left. A little bit goes a long way.

  26. My box was somewhat similar: the "face rejuvenator", the brush guards, a twistband (though at least I got a lace print one in a pretty purple colour), and a color club nailpolish in a rose gold that I don't think will work with my skin.

What I got that differed: a perfume sample - Bvlgari Jasmine Noir. It is a nice enough scent, and I actually like perfume samples, but I wish they would only send samples of scents that are harder to find. In my first box I got Arquiste L'Etrog: a scent that wasn't me, but was more interesting and is one I would probably have never smelled otherwise.

I also got a Wei to go Beauty overnight kit which I found kind of lame. Maybe I'll change my mind when I use it but the "cc cream" looks too dark (even though it is "light", and I don't think there is enough of the cleanser to judge it.

    1. :-( I hope the Wei kit works for you. Let me know.

  27. I hated my birchbox too. I got a gray color club polish, a youngblood primer, a twist tie, some tea, benefit face wash and face scrub in packets, and some nexus shampoo/conditioner in a foil packet.
I hate the benefit stuff. It's so small and it smells so heavily fragranced I am a little scared to put it on my face. I don't have long hair so I can't use the tie, but my cat had fun for twenty minutes before she completely shreded it and I threw it out lol. I got the exact same nexus shampoo sample at my walgreens (I think it was walgreens) I wish I got fekkai lol!
Oh well, it's a million times better than my august birchbox. My box was so bad last month, and also completely destroyed buy a leaky sample that I wrote them a (respectful) email and they gave me this box for free. It was hard being respectful after that box! I don't think I want to give birchbox anymore of my money.

  28. This was my second birchbox, and I was excited to get the nail polish. But once it finally (yeah shipping was a mess) showed up, I found out that 1) I got Tweet Me, which is streaky and sheer and 2) it isn't even a full-size bottle! The other samples were also blah- I got tea (?!?) and some super tiny skincare stuff. I figured I'd give it one more month to see if I get something that I actually want to use my points on, but now I just keep getting 404s when I try to leave feedback. I give up.

    1. :-( maybe it's your security settings? I'm not sure. I hope you are able to fix it. Seems lame to not get any points.

  29. I am not feeling it this month either. I got the benefit samples (actually like the stuff but could get free at Sephora probably so...yeah). Gray nail polish, which is not my color.
Twist tie (my hair is too short) , zip lock bag (still can't believe they market that thing as anything other than what it is!), Caudalie firming serum which may be OK and then the BB cream. So not all bad I guess. I think the inclusion of the zip lock bag and hair tie is what makes me feel a little bit annoyed. Oh well!!! This too shall pass.

    1. That ziploc bag is so incredibly lame. It won't even pass the TSA screenings b/c TSA requires the bags to be CLEAR AND SEE THROUGH! I understand your lack of enthusiasm.

  30. Not really excited about my first birch box either (september)!!! It wasn't really what I expected..... But I am going to give it a second try...Otherwise I will also cancelled my subscription and do something else with my 10 dollars.... will see!!!

  31. This box was awful!! Like a previous poster said..You can get better FREE samples when you order off of Sephora.com!! I'm canceling like my sister did last week!

  32. Forgive me if you've answered this elsewhere, but I've only just learned about all of these beauty boxes. I've seen Birchbox, MyGlam, Sample Society, Beauty Army, Glossybox...is there one service that you recommend far and away beyond the rest? It's a bit overwhelming!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I really don't find any of them to be significantly better than the other. If you really want samples and are new to makeup then MyGlam might be good for you. If you want samples and a good mix of skin care and makeup Birchbox is good. If you want to pay $21 a month for the CHANCE of a full sized item then Glossybox is for you. OR. You could save $10 a month and after 6 months or so, go buy yourself something nice from a regular store.

      Delete
  33. I'm definitely not new to makeup; in fact, I'm a bit of a product junkie. I hate spending money on an impulse makeup or skincare purchase only to have it not work out, so the sample subscription idea is really appealing.

I like that Glossybox uses tons of brands that I don't know, but the price is steep! Birchbox seems to have a nice mix and a great price, but from what I've seen on your blog, it falls victim to some serious "WTF?" selections. You are hilarious, by the way. I'm glad I found your site.

  34. I loved my first two boxes, but they have progressively gotten worse.
