Foundation Fridays: Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation in Light #44 - Review, Pictures, Swatches

Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation

It's not often I find a foundation that meets my Trifecta of Greatness.  The Trifecta of Greatness or TOG, as I like to say, is a foundation that will keep my skin matte, matches my skintone AND does not break me out.  Finding a foundation that meets all three criteria for TOG is about as difficult as holding hands with your shadow.  But every once in a while the acid kicks in and your shadow grabs your hand and drags you Sephora to pick up a new foundation.  (well metaphorically of course)

My dear readers, I bring you Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation in Light #44. Believe it or not, there is a shade lighter than this in the color range and a shade ever so slightly darker and pinker than this as well. The color range is EXCELLENT for us fair skinned (read: pale ass) foundation wearers.  Check out the ranges of colors.  I just clipped this from the Sephora website so I don't have the numbers, but at least you can see the range.

Pretty neat right?  Well I think so. I always get excited when a foundation comes out that matches my skin.  My neck is lighter than my face and significantly less red, so I tend to go a tad darker than my neck as a lighter foundation against all the red in my skin makes me look like I'm wearing a mask, which is no bueno.

Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation in Light #44

As for how the foundation works...here is what the marketing propaganda from Sephora Says:
"Kat created this foundation to provide exceptional coverage, without compromising a smooth, striking finish."
Really? She was in the lab working on this foundation? I had no idea she had a background in chemistry!  I'm just kidding. I'm sure she had a lot of input.
"Formulated with 21 percent pigment, this powerful formula was developed to match a broad range of skintones with bold coverage—the proprietary pigments can even effectively cover tattoos."
Truth.  The coverage on this foundation is insane. Like total complete opaque coverage!  You'll see soon enough.
"The combination of raw materials and the best siliconic elastomers and siliconic esters..."
Siliconic? Is that even a word?
"...provide 24-hour wear with transfer resistance. Natural polymers absorb oil for a matte, soft finish and the added emollients provide a velvety texture for perfectly smooth, hydrated skin."
Truth again....well the 24 hour wear may be debatable, but this stuff wears A LONG TIME!  When used in conjunction with the Kat Von D Lock 'N Load Makeup Setting Mist, you have pretty much budge proof foundation. It's a freakin' miracle.

KVD Lock & Load Setting Mist

You all know that my skin is extremely oily AND breakout prone AND red AND pale AND...etc.   This foundation by Kat Von D is THE ONLY foundation I have worn in the last year that seriously lasts all dang day, does not fade and keeps my skin from getting oily before noon. In addition to that, the coverage is so amazing that I don't need to use as much concealer as I normally would..

The foundation comes in an airless pump bottle that is clear. You can see exactly how much foundation you have left at any given time.  You reduce the threat of contamination with the efficient pump. One pump may be enough for your entire face. I use two pumps for my face and neck and I use a brush from IT Cosmetics to apply.  However I have applied using my fingers and a damp sponge with similar good results.  I just feel that the brush provides the best flawless coverage out of all three methods of application.

It Cosmetics Powder Brush

There is a slight scent to the foundation, that I'm not really a fan of.  That's the one negative I have for this foundation. Those with sensitive noses might want to avoid or just deal with it.  The foundation is BEST removed using the OIL CLEANSING method.  This foundation, like any foundation, if not properly removed WILL break you out.  That's why it's important to use a cleansing oil to dissolve the product THEN wash your face with a good cleanser after.  I think half the cases* of people complaining about a foundation breaking them out is because of improper cleansing/removal. *Totally made up non scientific statistic. I'm completely talking out of my ass.

OK. I know you want to see how well this works.  So I'm going to show you a series of photos of my face.  One completely bare and devoid of makeup. One with the Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation applied, and one with a finished makeup look to include concealer, powder, blush, etc.  Now my bare face is pretty scary right now. I have recently suffered some serious acne breakouts from a moisturizer I was testing AND my hormones are all screwed up so my acne is flaring up terribly.  I have a host of other reasons why my skin looks so terrible, but I don't want to bore you.  So to lessen the shock of seeing my bare face I thought it would be wise to show you....

THIS!:

Now look at my bare face. Now look at The Predator Again.  Now look down to my bare face.

It doesn't seem so bad when you look at The Predator picture first. Right? I figure I would really shock your eyes so that my bare faced picture doesn't look as horrific when compared to the alien monstrosity above.  OK. Moving on.

My face with the Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation in Light #44 applied all over.  Look at that. All the acne, redness, sunspots, etc. It's gone. I mean, there is no concealer used. this is JUST foundation. Pretty awesome, right?

Now you see the finished look. I'm very happy with it.  Sure the acne is still there in the raised sections but it's not as obvious as it was without makeup.  Plus this foundation, while providing heavy coverage, does not feel heavy or cakey on my skin. It certainly does not feel "light" but I don't feel like I'm wearing a mask or anything like that.

Do you NEED this?  YES!  If you have skin like mine or oily skin or just really want opaque coverage, this is the foundation for you.  I will say that those with very dry skin, might not find this very comfortable to wear. But this certainly does not give a powdery finish like other long wear foundations, so it might work.  Thankfully Sephora is great about samples and returns.  You can always get a sample to try before you buy.  That's what I did.  This baby will set you back $34 USD and the Setting Mist will cost you another $24.  This is ONLY available at Sephora. I'm totally going to check out the Rehab Priming Elixir and Tattoo Concealer from this line. I would like to see how they all work together.  Do you think this is the foundation for you?

  1. UH effective, light and doesnt feel like wearing a mask? I need!

Also, once I was at a makeup artist who shunned me for calling myself whiteass. She said the apropiate term is porcelaine and that porcelaine is the BEST skincolor to work with as a makeupartist because it doesnt demand many layers to have a color pop! Since then I been a proud porcelaine :D

    1. Porcelain! I shall continue to call myself a white ass, but will use Porcelain when in the presence of MUAs! :-)

  2. Wow, that is some opaque coverage! (btw - your skin is not scary, it's just skin!). However, the foundation looks like foundation to me - rather than looking like real skin - and that's something that I hate. I don't know how inevitable that is with full-coverage foundations, though.

    1. You can sheer this out with a damp sponge, and trust me. This doesn't look mask-y at all. With contouring and appropriate blush placement the look is quite nice.

  3. I have the primer, and iwth your oily skin, I would say *definitely* get a sample and try it. I have normal/dry skin and I use it as a light moisturizer - I don't think it does doodle as a primer. I suspect it has that same light fragrance you mentioned; I don't mind it, but I can see how some wouldn't like it. The primer is not a necessity by any means - there are scads that would work better for you I think

and the foundation looks very nice! Full coverage foundations always pretty much look like foundation by the nature of the beast, but that is one of the most natural looking I've seen. Man that baby covers and still manages to look pretty real! And it's a good match. Can't beat it with a stick! :P

  4. Wow I am considering getting this to use as a concealer! Btw, color me crazy but Predator is kind of a hottie! HOLLER.

  6. First, you may have just sold me on my next foundation. I think it looks lovely on, and while some people are saying it "looks like foundation" I disagree. I can't see anywhere on your face where the makeup is visible as makeup- it's not sinking into pores, it's not caked up around blemishes or settled into expression lines. I think it's really just the comparison pics that exemplify that it's foundation- had you just published the finished photo, I don't think anyone would have thought the foundation stood out :) And frankly, if anyone knows of a makeup that covers that well but looks less like makeup, please let me know, cause I need it!

Also, can I say, great call-out on the cleansing issue. I used to work for Estée Lauder and told every person I sold their long-wear foundations to that they *had* to use a makeup remover first to get it off. I can't tell you how many times people didn't heed that advice & then came back complaining of breakouts.

More often than not, I'd sell or sample them some remover, on the condition that if they didn't see an improvement they could return it all. I almost never got returns after that :) Longwears are a totally different animal- they can be incredible, but if you don't treat them right, they'll turn on you ;)

  7. When you did the look at the predator, now my face, now the predator it made me think of the Old Spice guy. Look up, look down, now I am holding diamonds!

I got a sample of this to try, but haven't tested it yet. Now I am excited!

  9. Oh wow. I think I'll have to get a sample of this! I'm pale and have rosacea and I've been having trouble finding anything full enough coverage. (Apparently losing what slight summer "tan" I had has made me too pale for MUFE HD. Sigh.)

  10. I have this as well and fell in love with it after getting a sample in Sephora. I have very dry skin and it works for me as well. I personally love the look when you apply with a stippling brush or a damp beauty blender. LOVE IT. It may be my favorite foundation of the season.

  11. I got this foundation a few weeks ago and LOOOOOOOOVE it. I have very oily skin but love full coverage and a very matte finish. This is the only foundation I have found that will give me that, and I do not look like a greasy slice of pizza midday. I have played an indoor soccer game while wearing it (don't judge!) and after the game it seriously looked like I could just freshen up with some powder and still have a flawless look. I can't rave enough about this stuff!!!!

  12. I wanted to love this, but I have hyperpigmentation and it does not cover it, I was hoping it would work but no luck. Even her concealer doesn't cover it completely. But yes if you just have redness or minor discoloration this is a great choice.

    1. It didn't cover your hyperpigmentation? My face was completely covered and you can see my red red marked skin before and nothing after. Sorry that this didn't work for you. :-(

  13. Why did you have to show me this when my car needs $565 worth of parts and labour. D:<

Could I really be wooed away from BB cream by a foundation? I haven't worn actual foundation in 8 months.

  14. I love the entire line of KvD makeup in general, so it's nice to see something get such a positive review. That said, I likely wouldn't purchase this particular foundation, as it may be a bit too much coverage for my particular needs, and I have way too much foundtion as it is. It looks like a very good product, though!

I'm definitely gonna pick it up next time I'm at Sephora!!! I love that it's full coverage yet it's still a liquid... And the finish is gorgeous<3333

  22. Do you know what shade you would be in mac foundation or Revlon colorstay? I really want to get this but my only option is buying it online :( I have yellow undertones and wear mac nc15 in studio sculpt or Revlon colorstay in buff. Any ideas would be a huge help :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think I'm a MAC NC15 and and Revlon Ivory 010. MAC put me in the NC b/c my face has so much red. The yellow from the NC line tones down the red...supposedly. Light 42 is very very light. Way lighter than 44 which I reviewed here. If you have no red in your face and are very fair #42 might work for you I find that #44 is slightly too yellow for my pale pink/red complexion when applied on my neck which is very fair, but good for my overall skintone on my face. Thankfully you can sheer out the foundation if you applu it with a damp sponge or mix in a light moisturizer or serum with the foundation. I hope this helps.

      Delete
    2. Elvira -- I agree that #44 is a little too yellow, but I think you could go warmer on your face too. In the "foundation only" picture, I think it's the yellow that is making the foundation "look like makeup" to some viewers (you look great in the "complete face" picture, but you've also added some warm tones back).

    3. Hi girl: You have a good point. I have very PINK rims to my eyes, whih makes any look without them covered up look odd, but I am thinking about picking up #46 which is still light but pink toned and mixing 42, 44 and 46 together. I appreciate the comment and feedback very much.

  23. I tried this but it broke me out like crazy. I used just regular old face wash and my Clarisonic. I guess I need to try an oil but I'm SO OILY so I have been scared to try! Anyway, my bottle went back to Sephora. *boohoo*

  25. You convinced me to try it, and I'm so glad I did. The coverage is great. It cuts down on the amount of time it takes to put on my face in the morning since I don't need concealer or powder. I found that it dries fairly quickly, so I apply it to one area at a time instead of trying to do my whole face at once. No biggie though, just takes some getting used to... Thanks for the info! You're very funny.

  27. Hi! I just stumbled upon you... I was wondering if you find that this foundation oxidizes? I had a sample before it came out and Im wondering if I just had the wrong shade because it went on amazingly but I was a tad orange after an hour. Thanks in advance!!

    1. Hi! Glad you found me! I have not found that this foundation oxidizes on me, but everyone is different. I do use a primer underneath, so that might help. I'm not sure. And I have tried the Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation. It's very nice for full coverage. Unfortunately the lightest shade is too yellow for me and this breaks me out because there is an ingredient in it which I'm allergic to...which I only discovered after I started to use it. :-P But I'm glad it's a good alternative for you!

  29. I've been following you for months, now, trying everything you recommend. I was terrified of this, but it's the yellow that drew me to it. I'm PALE but very yellow, which, NO MUA ever believes. I walked out of the store so excited to try this and the darn lady gave me the 46 pinky shade anyway. Punk. :( Did you know this is sold out everywhere?
It's so very hush-hush and I can't get any info.

  30. Just came across this while searching some info on the foundation... I use #42 and it's a perfect match. As someone who RARELY is able to find a color that isn't too yellow/peach/AND too dark, this foundation is worth its weight in gold. I have dry skin and apply with fingers or Beauty Blender. Flawless. A rice size amount does my entire face, so one bottle is a year plus of product (and I wear it everyday). It does not oxidize on me (and everything in the past has so I have spent a fortune on primers), does not itch or make me break out (I have sensitive skin).

The bad news? It is virtually unavailable at this time anywhere as she is either repackaging or reformulation or BOTH. If you love it and can find it... BUY it now. I currently have 5 bottles tucked away as "reformulating" has meant the kiss of death for me when it comes to a foundation.

LOVE your blog, btw. : )

  31. I'm so glad that I found your review! I wanted to get an opinion from someone with skin like mine - oily, moody, okay or horrific on any given day, and of course, uber-sensitive (you know, so that anything used to address the aforementioned problems will just create new problems...). I'm dying to get my hands on this now and Sephora online is sold out in the colors that might best match my skin tone. Now that I've read your review and seen your pics, I'm going to hit every Sephora in my area and try to grab a bottle...or two. Apparently this stuff is worth its weight in gold. Thank you for your review - it's so refreshing to see REAL women sharing what works (I mean no disrespect to all of the makeup artists and sixteen year olds with poreless skin doing reviews...well, maybe a little).

  32. The first thing I thought when I saw your photo was that it's the wrong undertone. You don't have yellow undertones, you have pink. I'm not sure why someone told you to use a yellow undertoned foundation to hide redness, it doesn't neutralize, especially with full coverage foundation, it just makes it look like you're wearing the wrong share. I think you should try 46 when it's back in stock.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh my gosh, you are hysterical! And pale! ;) I finally found this foundation in light 42 ( I'm super pale-ass!) and I've never found a foundation that matches me so well, sadly. I've definitely had my do not's with it, but all in all, I love it. I just ordered the Elixir and the concealer ( btw, I just now see that on Sephora, it says the elixir is PERMANENTLY out of stock!). I hope I don't end up loving the elixir. Thanks for your review and laughs!

Since my wedding is coming up in 16 days and I am doing my own makeup I wanted to try something new. And I am a lover of Kat Von D on all levels. The girl at Sephora did my face for me to show me and I was so hooked. It did not leave my face feeling heavy and she used next to nothing to apply it.
