Thursday Poll

The other day I finally had a Crumbs Bakery cupcake.  I have been hearing about Crumbs for a long time and was excited that they opened a bakery in Washington, DC.  Mr. Sith and I picked up a sample of their mini cupcakes.  They have a variety of fantastical flavors and toppings and filings.  If you can imagine it, they have it.  So it was disappointing to bite into this cupcake and "feel nothing".  OK. Let me explain.  The cupcake tasted VERY good. It was sweet and flavorful. The frosting was delicious and the cake itself was moist and yummy.  But there was something missing.  It wasn't a flavor or ingredient, per se. It was more of...It lacked soul.  This cupcake was a cupcake in the very definition of the word, but there was no love behind the cupcake. Whoever made this cupcake, is not someone that loves the craft of cupcake creation.  I know this sounds strange, but in cooking and baking, there is a little bit of the soul of the person that makes the food added into each dish they create.  For example. There was a move released in 1992 called "Like Water for Chocolate" (Como agua para chocolate). This Mexican film is based on a novel.  A story about a woman name Tita and a man named Pedro. They are in love, but forbidden to marry because of family tradition.  Tita, being the youngest daughter, is forbidden to marry before the eldest daughter and has been confined to a life of taking care of their elderly mother.  When Pedro is given the hand of Tita's older sister in marriage, the wedding cake Tita makes for them is infused with her tears. The sadness overcomes the entire wedding as the guests and the bride and groom eat the cake.  More emotions of the current situation are infused into the dishes that Tita makes and as the story goes on you see how her current mood affects the people that eat the food she creates. You all need to see this movie, if you haven't already, and make sure you are near a Mexican restaurant after watching it because you will have a strong desire for Mexican cuisine after watching this movie, for sure!    Tita put part of her soul into the dishes she created.  Something lacking from the Crumbs cupcake I ate. Then it hit me.  A cupcake that has soul!  A cupcake that you can taste the love and pride and commitment in every bite. Danielle's Desserts.  No. I am not being paid by them to write this, I am doing this because they have the most awesome baked goods ever!  Danielle's Desserts is a small bakery located on the third floor of Tysons Galleria Mall outside of Saks Fifth Avenue.  This small shop makes the most wonderful and honest cakes, pies, cupcakes, cookies and bars I have ever had in my life.  Every item tastes home made.  The small batches help, but Danielle and her staff truly make each item with love.  I happen to adore their Caramel Cupcake.  The rich buttercream frosting is astounding. It is almost sinful.  The cake, the cake of the cupcake is the best I have ever eaten in my entire life.  Unlike other cupcake boutiques like Crumbs and Cake Love (another local cupcake shop) Danielle's Desserts cupcakes are simple and straight forward. The cupcakes at Danielle's Desserts may not have the bells and whistles on each cupcake like other retailers, but you really don't need that in the first place.  You just need excellent cake as the foundation and then the most delectable and perfect buttercream frosting to top it off.  I don't know why I am so passionate about these cupcakes, I think it's the passion infused into each creation that comes out of this small bakery that keeps me thinking about them.  So while the Crumbs cupcakes are quite tasty and well made,  they seem like empty calories (literally and figuratively). Where as a Danielle's Desserts cupcake (Has empty calories too) but at least I feel and taste the affection for the craft baked into each item I purchase.  OK, enough about my cupcake fetish!
On To The Poll!

1. Lip Of The Day? - Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Rose. I am coming back from being sacked with a migraine all day yesterday. I'm doing the minimal makeup thing today, because I think I might have to go home and rest because I feel like a truck has run me over.

2. Do you like cupcakes? Do you think food can have "soul"? Are you a foodie? - YES. YES. And I didn't think I was until I went off on this whole thing about cupcakes, so I guess I am a foodie.  I'm certainly married to one.  I don't think I'm a true foodie, but I like what I like.

3.  What is an underrated makeup brand, in your opinion? - (I'm actually asking for a friend) I think The Balm Cosmetics are underrated. They have an excellent concealer and their shadows are pretty awesome. I also hear their blushes are good and lipsticks rock!

4.  Like Water For Chocolate made me crave Mexican food after watching it.  Have you ever seen a movie that made you crave a specific kind of food after watching it? - Aside from LWFC I also craved really good Chinese food after watching "Eat Drink Man Woman".

5.  What is your favorite beauty item (Mask, Hair treatment, Moisturizer, Mattifier, etc) to create from items found in your kitchen? - I love making a honey cinnamon mask. It's great for acne and irritated skin.  I also love doing a yogurt and honey mask.

  1. Ooh, I so agree! It's why sometimes a cupcake feels like something to be guilty about and other times it feels like a nice hug and totally worth the calories :)
1)ELF Tinted Lip Balm in Plum (my go-to fall color, I can't believe how much I like this and it's sooo cheap)
2)I'm nanas about cupcakes. I used to have a collection of all things cupcake but I realized my house is too small for the madness and gave a lot away. I am an on-again, off-again foodie. Right now junk suits me just find but I go through foodie phases where I won't allow anything less than gourmet to pass my lips.
3)I feel like Stila is underrated. I don't see too much about them on beauty blogs but I think their tinted moisturizers are the best I've ever used.
4)I crave a full English tea (complete with cucumber sandwiches, scones, and cup of earl grey) after watching anything with Brits in it, LOL.
5)I love exfoliating or treating skin irritations with a mix of white vinegar and baking soda... leaves my skin less red and quite soft :)

  2. 1. Lip Of The Day?
A watermelon-flavored lip balm. The lips are feeling a bit dry today :-(

    2. Do you like cupcakes? Do you think food can have "soul"? Are you a foodie?
I'm definitely a foodie but I'm also very picky when it comes to my food. And I don't like cupcakes... Am I banned from your blog now? :-) Seriously though, I don't really like them. Except maybe really chocolatey ones, and without any buttery stuffing/topping.

    3. What is an underrated makeup brand, in your opinion?
    Tough one... Maybe Sigma?

    4. Like Water For Chocolate made me crave Mexican food after watching it. Have you ever seen a movie that made you crave a specific kind of food after watching it?
I made reservations at an Asian restaurant WHILE watching Kung Fu Panda... :-)

    5. What is your favorite beauty item (Mask, Hair treatment, Moisturizer, Mattifier, etc) to create from items found in your kitchen?
Phew, tough one again... I sometimes use olive oil instead of waterproof make-up remover.

    1. LOL! Totally not banned from the blog b/c you don't like cupcakes. They aren't for everyone. I'm not even sure I like them all the time. :-)

  3. 1- nothing yet- i was getting supper ready in the crockpot before eating breakfast and having tea. i'll shower soon while baby is sleeping.
2- i like cupcakes, but i am not crazy about buttercream frosting. i prefer ganache, mousse, or cream cheese frostings. i agree 100% about soul food and emotion in food. food is a MAJOR love language in my family (which is kinda funny because we're very WASPy).
3- oooh i agree with The Balm. I'd also say L'Oreal, at this point. Not many people seem to like their foundations, eyeshadows and lippies compared to the ones who like their mascaras and liners. The Infallible eyeshadows are pretty frickin' fabulous.
4- i am VERY VERY foodie and hungry so i'm influenced by just about anything i watch, lol. For example, Rataouille, Julie and Julia both make me want some French cuisine. (Which is impressive since with Ratatouille the food is all ANIMATED.) Even movies not about food make me hungry. Like the scene in the Princess Diaries where Mia sends Michael the apology pizza!
5- adding baking soda to cleansers or making a paste with it is a great trick. i also like to do a mask with crushed aspirin and honey. i've done yoghurt masks before but would never ever put egg on my face- too germy.

  4. neat! i must add that movie to my list.

    1. Lip Of The Day?
burt's bees tinted lip balm in hibiscus. i love the way it makes my lips feel, and just a hint of color.

    2. Do you like cupcakes? Do you think food can have "soul"? Are you a foodie?
i like the idea of cupcakes, but i hardly ever eat anything with that much sugar. it may taste good, but it makes me feel ill unless i consume about a gallon of water with it- so i typically avoid stuff like that. i do think food can have a soul, i believe that anything you craft with you hands and ideas in any way can carry your energy and heart. i am a foodie- i love trying new foods, have many favorite foods, and am enjoying making stuff up in the kitchen. it's like science meets art, only edible!

    3. What is an underrated makeup brand, in your opinion?
hmmmm... i have to agree on the l'oreal. i do like some of their skin coverage products for everyday looks. maybeline too- best powder foundation i've found to last a 12 hour sweaty work day.

    4. Like Water For Chocolate made me crave Mexican food after watching it. Have you ever seen a movie that made you crave a specific kind of food after watching it?
not that i am aware of. but i am always hungry and tend to already be munching whenever i watch movies, so it may be hard to crave other food with my mouth full!

    5. What is your favorite beauty item (Mask, Hair treatment, Moisturizer, Mattifier, etc) to create from items found in your kitchen?
honestly i have never concocted anything from the kitchen. tell me more :D
this cinnamon mask sounds like something indulgent and fun, is there a recipe?

  5. Well snap. Per usual, I am nekked face on this Thursday.

    1) Lip of the day.. nothing yet, but will choose something later.

    2) Yes I like cupcakes and muffins. Can food have "soul" of course! When food is made out of love, magical things can happen. Anyone can make a meatloaf.. but when you make it full of love, it transends everything. It morphs from fuel for the body, it becomes a hug, a comforting place. A 'you matter to me' kinda place. Switch out meatloaf for any dish, same message IMO.

3)Underrated makeup.. hhmm. Bourgese.. I have always loved their shadows. Elf.. some really good gems in this line.

    4) So many have made me crave wonderful food. But the one that pops into my mind right now is.. "Shirly Valentine" I still really want to go to Greece for the food alone. Other attractions would just be bonus.

5)hhmm Milk. Milk does a body good! LOL. To be honest the only thing from the kitchen I made was a homemade lip scrub with olive oil and sugar.

  6. When I was pregnant I saw the Witches of Eastwick on TV. I wanted pickles and chocolate covered macadamia nuts and deviled eggs. That was a fun night!

  7. 1. Lip of the day: Revlon lip butter in Red Velvet.
    2. I love cupcakes! Yes, food has an energy source. I am a wicked foodie; my husband has stated that he thinks I rank food above other certain activities...
    3. I don't really know... I love my L'Oreal concealers, I have a couple of drugstore lippies that I return to (i.e. the Revlon lip butters). Perhaps Tarte, I love their tinted moisturizers and gel blushes!
    4. Sushi! After "Jiro Dreams of Sushi."
    5. I haven't made any beauty products in my kitchen in 20 years! However, I remember in HS how my friends and I would use egg whites as masks... Yuck!

  8. 1)estee lauder Rose Tea
2)love cupcakes but some of these cupcake places are more about following trend and not creating with passion. the ice cream places here in SF have a lot more soul lately. If you are ever in SF, try Mr and Mrs Miscellaneous. talk about soul food!
3)Underrated makeup brand- I think Estee Lauder doesn't get enough love. Still seen as a grandma brand even though their collections are getting edgier and more original each time.
4)I love Like Water for Chocolate! but Tortilla Soup ws the film that made me super hungry for my tex mex soul food. & reading Harry Potter makes me crave strong tea, bacon sandwiches, pub food and imaginary wizard foods like pumpkin juice
    5) I tried olive oil soak for cuticles and I couldn't stand the weird feel. it makes my tongue tingle, no idea why! but when a container of honey crystallizes, I use it as a mani/pedi scrub. smells yummy and works great!

  9. 1. Lip Of The Day? - Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment, as well, only I have the non-tinted version. It's great for flaking lips!

    2. Do you like cupcakes? Do you think food can have "soul"? Are you a foodie? I secretly tell myself that cupcakes (along with donuts, ranch dressing, and mayonnaise) are bad, like gambling or drugs. I don't eat just one. I go until there is nothing left. Food definitely has soul (I live in the South!!!) and I am a level 1 foodie.

    3. What is an underrated makeup brand, in your opinion? I'd have to say JR Watkins, although its not really a makeup brand... The lotions and hand salves are amazing, organic, and free of harsh chemicals. They deserve more attention.

    4. Like Water For Chocolate made me crave Mexican food after watching it. Have you ever seen a movie that made you crave a specific kind of food after watching it?
    Does a Snickers commercial count?

    5. What is your favorite beauty item (Mask, Hair treatment, Moisturizer, Mattifier, etc) to create from items found in your kitchen?
I don't usually DIY beauty. I think that what you put in your body shows on the outside! Honey cinnamon mask sounds DELICIOUS.

    Love your blog!

  10. 1. Lip Of The Day? - My upper. It is just a touch furrier than the bottom...

    2. Do you like cupcakes? Do you think food can have "soul"? Are you a foodie? YES, YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES!

    3. What is an underrated makeup brand, in your opinion? Flowers and a simple card, but avoiding the insult can prevent the need for a make-up...whta? oh, nevermind N/A

    4. Like Water For Chocolate made me crave Mexican food after watching it. Have you ever seen a movie that made you crave a specific kind of food after watching it?
Every time I watch "Cool Hand Luke" I have this strange craving for egg salad.

    5. What is your favorite beauty item (Mask, Hair treatment, Moisturizer, Mattifier, etc) to create from items found in your kitchen?
What ever meal I can cook that makes YOU smile, my love...

  11. 1. LOTD is Alba coconut cream lip balm. Home sick today, bahh.

    2. Cupcakes, yes. Preferably red velvet. Soul, absolutely. Foodie, definitely, in the vegetarian sense of the term.

    3. Underrated makeup brand-- I agree with L'Oreal! I've got quite a few of their products in my arsenal. Voluminous has been my go-to mascara since Prescriptives cruelly left the scene, their bb cream is wonderful, and I really like their polishes (which don't get nearly enough love from the polish community, imo).

    4. Movies-- Chocolat makes me crave chocolate, of all things. Spirited Away makes me hungry for sushi (in fact, to curb that, DH and I have sushi and Miyazaki movie nights). Leap Year makes me crave boeuf bourguignon (or faux boeuf, in my case). So does Julie and Julia, of course... come to think of it, so does Chocolat.

    5. Favorite home beauty treatment-- water. I turn on the spigot and fill something up. Then, I drink it. Lots of it. Sometimes I splash it on my face, if I've opted to go makeup free for the day.

  12. Food definitely has a soul. I looovvee food and I love cooking food and if I don't feel well emotionally I absolutely will not cook. If I feel rushed I won't cook. I have to be in a good space for cooking and eating. Definitely a foodie and I've had a cupcake like you just described from a small shop in CT and was quite disappointed.

Movie that make me want to eat. Almost any movie with food as the main subject but what comes to mind immediately with this question is CHOCOLAT and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs!

  13. 1. Lip Of The Day? - Maybelline Baby Lips balm. No color for me today!

    2. Do you like cupcakes? Do you think food can have "soul"? Are you a foodie? - YES to all!! I loooove cupcakes--they're the perfect size and leave enough room so you can try many flavors instead of just one honkin piece of cake (which STILL sounds good, but I digress...). I don't think I'm a "true" foodie either, but damn close enough! I LOVE to eat and really like trying new things and stepping out of the box when it comes to trying new recipes

    3. What is an underrated makeup brand, in your opinion? - (I'm actually asking for a friend) Probably Shiseido. Their makeup doesn't get as much love as it should. Their formulas and textures are INCREDIBLE!

    4. Like Water For Chocolate made me crave Mexican food after watching it. Have you ever seen a movie that made you crave a specific kind of food after watching it? - Haha yes definitely--happens to me all the time!

    5. What is your favorite beauty item (Mask, Hair treatment, Moisturizer, Mattifier, etc) to create from items found in your kitchen? - Ooh those 2 masks you do sound great--I'll have to try that! I LOVE doing at-home facial masks. My favorite is a really easy one that contains colloidal oatmeal, a tiny bit of water to soften it, and honey. It can be used as a gentle scrub with just the colloidal oatmeal, but the mask seriously ROCKS. I swear there's nothing it can't do--it relieves itching and soothes irritated skin, softens, moisturizes, helps clear up acne/pimples, and gently exfoliates. It's SO easy but it makes my skin look incredible!

  14. 1) lip of the Day: I forgot my lipstick at home and found Sail la vie from Mac in my purse!
    2) Cupcakes? nah ... it is cake in another shape and form but cheesecakes i'm in!!! Soul, I do think we associate some food with events and special time in our lives like xmas with the turkey and ''tourtières' for French Canadian. Foodie: Definitely I like eating new stuff, french fusion mexican is the best .... it doesn't need to be high brow just good and with a twist .... american - indian - japanese is a good trio too!
    3) Underrated Makeup Brand - some canadian drugstore brand Marcelle.
    4) Movies - no nothing really come to mind
5 Favorite home beauty treatment: none

  15. 1. Lip Of The Day? Palmer's dark chocolate and peppermint lip butter

    2. Do you like cupcakes? Do you think food can have "soul"? Are you a foodie? Love cupcakes. I absolutely feel that a meal prepared with love is something that people can taste. I'm absolutely a foodie.

    3. What is an underrated makeup brand, in your opinion? -This one's hard. There's brands like Illamasqua and Ellis Faas that I have to buy sight unseen, but that's not really underrated. I bought my first Laura Mercier gloss last week and thought the formula was perfection. I don't know if it's underrated or if I've been wearing blinders. Probably blinders. For drugstore, definitely L'Oreal. Sometimes I walk in the bathroom just to look at my Infallible shadow collection.

    4. Like Water For Chocolate made me crave Mexican food after watching it. Have you ever seen a movie that made you crave a specific kind of food after watching it? - Amelie and creme brulee. Learning to actually prepare it at home has been a milestone of adulthood. Right after childbirth.

    5. What is your favorite beauty item (Mask, Hair treatment, Moisturizer, Mattifier, etc) to create from items found in your kitchen? - Probably olive oil or mixing sugar in a cleanser that I wasn't too fond of.

  16. 1. Lip Of The Day? Urban Decay's Sellout. It helps with my phantom ultrapale lilackish lips (now say it backwards!). I heard it's getting discontinued, so wearing it is my silent protest.

    2. Do you like cupcakes? Do you think food can have "soul"? Are you a foodie? - If they're fresh, yes. Yes! Not really, but like anyone with a baking grandma I appreciate anyhing made with love, and I prefer making desserts rather than buying them!

    3. What is an underrated makeup brand, in your opinion? - Uhm Kiko puts out very good products, but their prices are midlow so people assume they aren't great. MakeUpGeek
eyeshadows make Mac's whimper, and in Spain Revlon is nowhere to be seen.

    4. Lol a friend got me the novel of Like water... by Laura Esquivel when I was like 13, and I remember thinking "I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be reading this" xD. As a Star Wars childhood lover, The Phantom Menace made me crave George Lucas' blood. In amount hazardous to HIS health. Same with the latest Indiana Jones.

    5. What is your favorite beauty item (Mask, Hair treatment, Moisturizer, Mattifier, etc) to create from items found in your kitchen? - I really like rosemary/olive oil hair masks in the summer and winter. I don't think I've ever had split ends. Also blended orange peels mixed with some honey make for an excellent astringent mask, but I'm allergic and don't really need it so I just make it for my cousins.

  17. 1. Lip Of The Day? - Estee Lauder 'Tiramisu' (see the food thing is always on my mind)

    2. Do you like cupcakes? Do you think food can have "soul"? Are you a foodie? I hate cupcakes, but I'm a rabid foodie. Cupcakes are too sweet and they remind me of 3rd grade fights over them with crumbs on my uniform. Give me a brownie! Give me a hunk of dark chocolate!

    3. What is an underrated makeup brand, in your opinion? Neutrogena concealers/lip glosses etc. are excellent and nobody talks about them.

    4. Like Water For Chocolate made me crave Mexican food after watching it. Have you ever seen a movie that made you crave a specific kind of food after watching it?
I can't think of a movie per se, but watching any Anthony Bourdain show is terrible for my waistline. The last one on Italy made me go get fresh tortellini....

    5. What is your favorite beauty item (Mask, Hair treatment, Moisturizer, Mattifier, etc) to create from items found in your kitchen? Sometimes I use apple vinegar to rinse my hair after shampooing, to get rid of harsh chemicals, and I love olive oil for dry skin emergencies.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I completely agree with your cupcake rant. There's a magical bakery that I used to live next to on the upper east side called Little Red Hens, or something to that effect, and they are the best cupcakes in NYC. Every cupcake really does have soul in that establishment.

  19. 1. Lip Of The Day? - Naiad French Vanilla lip balm (from Eco Emi)

    2. Do you like cupcakes? Do you think food can have "soul"? Are you a foodie? - YES YES YES!!! In fact I'm starting a foodie blog ;) I am becoming such a food snob now that I'm being introduced to so many artisan foods thru sub boxes. One instance--my grandma used to make me Russian tea cakes every year for Christmas. I haven't had them since she passed away two years ago. So when I saw them at Petit Amuse (and NOT listed as Mexican Wedding Cakes) I had to buy them...OMG I nearly cried they were just like my Grandma made. So yes, food made with love and passion makes a difference in taste!!

    3. What is an underrated makeup brand, in your opinion? - ? I tend to use mainstream brands. But I do love Meow cosmetics and Tokidoki.

    4. Like Water For Chocolate made me crave Mexican food after watching it. Have you ever seen a movie that made you crave a specific kind of food after watching it? - I need to see this!! And yes, when I went to see Chocolat, I took chocolate with me to the theatre, knowing I would be dying for some!

    5. What is your favorite beauty item (Mask, Hair treatment, Moisturizer, Mattifier, etc) to create from items found in your kitchen? - PLEASE post a recipe for that acne remedy? I am going MAD with perimenopause acne! HELP!!! I don't really make home beauty items, though I should!
