Birchbox November Box - Review, Pictures, Swatches

Okie Dokie!  So my November Birchbox arrived around Thanksgiving and to be quite honest, I have been so overwhelmed with holiday collections and other makeup I completely forgot about posting this box.  Well here I am, finally with what was in the November Birchbox.  Now I have heard from other subscribers that some of them were quite unhappy with their November boxes as they were full of skin care and devoid of makeup.  My box was not like that at all.

Let's take a closer look at what I received.

J.R. Watkins Hand & Cuticle Salve, ModelCo SHINE Ultra Lip Gloss, Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner, Chuao Chocolatier Assorted ChocoPod, and Curly Hair Solutions™ Curl Keeper.  OK. So no skin care, but a body care item, hair care and food...again.  At least there were any perfume samples.

This item was in the blue box within the Birchbox.  It was meant to be used as a small gift for a friend.  Since I have no friends I kept it for myself.   The hand salve has canola, olive, and sweet almond oils  and is free of harsh chemicals.  It is the Lavender scented salve (not a fan) and it comes in 2 other scents.  It smells like lavender and herbs and quiet desperation.

ModelCo SHINE Ultra Lip Gloss - 4ml $16.00
I received the gloss in Berry Pink. It comes in 2 other shades.  This gloss is touted as non sticky but honestly I wouldn't know because I couldn't bear to apply it to my lips.  It is so heavily fragranced with that fake synthetic strawberry scent, it was all I could do not to hurl as I was taking pictures.  (Now THAT'S an image for you!)

This gloss comes with a mirror on the side for "on the go application" because I'm so busy like a supermodel, that I don't have time to stop to put on lip gloss!  If you can get past the scent it's not a bad color and the sparkles make it pretty.

Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner (in black) $11.00
My pencil arrived damaged. the top had come off during shipping and the liner tip got all smooshed (That's the technical term)  Anyway. I was too lazy to sharpen it but it had enough exposed liner to do a swatch.  The liner is VERY soft, so I can see how easily this would "smoosh" it is also a decent black color...once you build it up.

Sadly tho, one swipe is not going to make it.  The liner (once set) stayed put for a long time and there is enough time to smoke it out or blend it if needed.  However, for the price, I would rather get another brand that I know is reliable.

Curly Hair Solutions™ Curl Keeper - 100ml $10.00
This water based gel promises to add definition and control frizz all while leaving your curls soft and not crunchy.  I haven't used this gel yet because I just purchased a big bottle of Ouidad from Birchbox back in September. Oh well. I'll take it with me on my next trip and see how it works.  It sounds promising and for only $10 the price is right!

Chuao Chocolatier Assorted ChocoPod - 7 pack $7.95
More food!  Thanks Birchbox. I would rather get food than hair twisties that are neon orange!  I received one (Honeycomb) of the 7 flavors that come in the assorted package.  The 7-piece set includes: Potato Chip (kettle chips and sea salt in milk chocolate), Sweet and Salty (milk chocolate with a hint of salt), Maple Bacon (crisp bacon with a dose of maple sweetness and smoked sea salt in milk chocolate), Honeycomb (amber honey caramelized into crispy pieces in dark chocolate), Salted Chocolate Crunch (toasted breadcrumbs with sea salt in dark chocolate), Spicy Maya (a spicy blend of pasilla chile, cinnamon, and cayenne in dark chocolate), and Firecracker (chipotle caramel fudge dotted with popping candy and salt in dark chocolate).  To be honest. I think to got the best flavor.  At least each bar is just 60 to 50 calories each so I could eat an entire box in a week without feeling guilty.  however for over a $1.14 per bar I'd rather just have a Snickers.

This month's box was NOT exciting for me.  I don't think there is one product that I would purchase a full size of from this collection.  I am still keeping my subscription for now. However, should the quality of the boxes continue to decline I will have to seriously re-consider my subscription. I am getting a bit over loaded with samples so Birchbox really needs to step up their game.  I still believe that saving $10-$15 a month and using those savings at the end of the year or every 6 months in order to buy one super, ultra, mega awesome item is better than all the sample boxes in the world. That's just my opinion.

I have provided my referral link HERE.  As I have said in the past, signing up for Birchbox through my referral link will get me referral points which I can use toward purchases from the Birchbox store. So far, this is the only beauty subscription service where I have shared my referral code.  I have provided my referral code only once in his post.  (Located above with the "HERE" designation) Throughout the rest of this post I have used non referral links to Birchbox.  If you choose not to sign up though my referral code, I'm totally OK with that. The non-referral Birchbox links in the post will not give me any points or special favors from the company if you decide to click on them.

What do you think?  Was this a box you would have liked?

  1. We got the same exact box. I wish I would have gotten one of the bath bombs. I also get really frustrated with hair samples that aren't enough for my hair. :( The eyeliner is super crappy, and I agree about the overly fake scented lipgloss. I gave both to my 16 year old cousin who wanted both (although I can't figure out why). I think I've got one more month in me. I've been a member for 6 months, and 3 of my boxes have been great; 3 have been pretty crappy. We'll see what happens with month 7.

  2. I got the ModelCo mascara, the potato chip Chocopod, a small package of dry shampoo and another freakin' perfume sample. The mascara is OK. Nothing to write home about. The last couple boxes have just been meh. Not exciting, and too few samples!

  3. I got the modelco mascara instead of the lipgloss. It's not so bad but I have so many mascara samples that I won't have to buy any for quite a while!

I also got lulu organics hair powder (tiny little sample), one love organic aromatic body serum (its fine, nothing special), mox botanicals lip butter (I loved this actually!), and a John Varvatos fragrance sample. I'm a bit irritated about the men's sample. I know the theme is giving...but I do not buy this for my boyfriend, I buy it for myself!

This is month 7 for me. I've loved 3 of them, liked 2, disliked 1, and hated one. I also like their point system. I got some nice things for "free" using my points, so that makes it even more worth it for me.

  4. Wtf. I'm posting mine today & want to come steal yours. I got 3 items from a brand I'm allergic to. Great variety there Birchbox.

    1. Here's the link to my review in case you wanted to see what it looked like! : http://stephanielouiseatb.blogspot.com/2012/11/birchbox-myglam-bag-for-november-2012.html

Also ... Can I just say MyGlam (despite their business ridiculous-ness Ipsy BS) just floored me this month. Exactly what I wish Birchbox had going on.

  5. Well, I wasn't thrilled when I opened my Birchbox but I realized I've actually tried more of the items of this one than previous ones (i.e. I still haven't tried all the self tanners they sent me, guess they think I'm white as a ghost). I will say that what I got is not what Birchbox says they sent me online. Must have been all that hurricane Sandy stuff that made them throw in whatever was on hand.

I got the mascara, hair powder and chocolate w/potato chips. They were all ok, wish the chocolate had been crunchier though. :) Also go the miracle skin transformer which I haven't tried yet.

The highlight of my box though was the perfume! lol I got a sample of Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme which I had tried at Sephora but wasn't ready to spend almost $200 on a bottle. Birchbox has a small version so that I will actually buy. :)

  6. I got the same exact box, and I actually love it. Actually, I got lemon scented cuticle/hand stuff, but otherwise the same. I am always looking for good cuticle things and curly hair things. Win. The black eyeliner swatched really well for me (mine wasn't squashed). I haaaaate the smell of the gloss as well, but it's SUCH a nice texture that I've been wearing it anyway, I wore it yesterday because it was in arm's reach and my lips are chapped and I'm lazy, then decided it could live in my purse. And chocolate for the win.

So yeah, this box was a good one for me. I'm actually considering signing up for a year (GASP) instead of doing the month by month . . . but not ready to commit.

  7. I got a mostly different box, but I'm happy with mine. I wish I'd gotten the lip gloss instead of the mascara; I'm drowning in mascara over here, but it's a decent mascara and works really well if I layer it with one of my more expensive mascaras (Noir G). Haven't tried the hair powder yet, my chocopod had potato chips in it and I gobbled it up, the Miracle Skin Transformer primer thing, and a perfume sample I neither wanted nor needed.

These days I'm happier with my Glossybox than my Birchbox but I'll continue to get both. It's just fun to see what's in them.

  8. Lol, the choclate bar is so random... :-) Other than that I think the content is pretty decent.

  9. Chuao's website says my target carries them. I must try this honey one you posted, and the spicy one they offer. I absolutely love unusual chocolate combinations.

  10. I have a friend who needs to reek of quiet desperation. Perhaps she will receive that hand salve for xmas.

  11. I get Glossybox and even though a lot of people I have seen review don't seem to think its worth the money but I love it. From what I've seen from the Birchbox, Glossybox sends more full-sized items or at least a size that you can actually use enough to decide if you like it. I was all ready to sign up for Birchbox but I'm not spending $10 for foil packets of hair products, twist band things, and chocolate bars.
