Thursday Poll

I wonder if, when we die, we ever get to find out the answers to all the worlds greatest mysteries.  Like what really happened to the Lindbergh baby, and for that matter what really happened to DB Cooper?  I wonder if we get to find out what happened to Amelia Earhart, and where Jimmy Hoffa is really buried.  Do we get the answer to the age old question Who was a better rock band, The Beatles or The Rolling Stones? (btw, the answer is The Beatles, you don't have to die to figure out that one)  I wonder if you get answers to personal questions like "What was the grossest thing I ever ate without knowing it?" You know like when there is a bug in your muffin and you thought it was a raisin...or something.  Or maybe you get the answer to what actually did happen to that Chanel Highlighter you had the suddenly disappeared. (btw, that's a sign that you have too much makeup when you lose makeup in your own home)  What about answers to great questions like what really was in that briefcase in "Pulp Fiction" and What really was in that box in "Barton Fink"? Who really shot JR? and who was the idiot that allowed the movie "Staying Alive 2" to be made.  Maybe we will find out if re-incarnation is really possible or if it's all a cruel hoax to keep us from killing spiders. I wonder if we find out what that creepy neighbor really had in his basement or if the the "cool parents" of the kid down the street were swingers.  I wonder if I get to find out if my High School Algebra teacher was really the sadist I always thought he was, or if I find out why my 6th grade teacher, Miss. Stargel, was always so mean and miserable and why she insisted on humiliating her students that were failing in front of the entire class and why she was even more mean when one of those students turned things around and got 100% on all future tests and never said congratulations or good work. (Not that I'm speaking from experience or that whole episode left me scarred for life or anything.)  I'd like to think that I get all the answers. I'd like to think that I would actually care about those things once I'm dead.  But I have a feeling I won't care, and I have a feeling I won't get those answers. I know it's a rather morbid Thursday Poll, but these are the things that run through my mind as I'm just on the edge of sleep and I get a "great idea" for a topic for a Thursday Poll.  Once I write it all out it doesn't seem like such a great idea.
On To The Poll!

1.  Blush Of The Day? - Chanel Joues Contraste in Rose Dust. A nice cool toned pink. I don't care that every makeup artist has told me to avoid pink blushes because I have so much red in my skin. I like pink blush and I will continue to wear it because it makes me happy. SO THERE!

2. Do you have a question or a mystery that you would like answered or solved one day? - I listed mine above, but I would like to know what happened to my car keys that vanished without a trace 2 years ago.

3.  Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? - Oh too many times to even count. So many times.  My most recent was purchasing a full size of Mattify Cosmetics Ultra Powder. The full size is HUGE! It think it will take me at least a year to finish it.

4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? -  I'll do my best to respond in the comments section if you ask.

5.  Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing?  - Yes. Facial Cotton. I buy Shiseido facial cotton. I always have at least a back up supply and I will ever use any no-name brand ever again. I am completely spoiled.

  1. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Givenchy Le Prisme Glow Blush in Lune Rosée (LE from last Winter) because I really need the glow at the moment!

    2. Do you have a question or a mystery that you would like answered or solved one day? - Who writes the blogger captchas?
Who are we, where are we going, are we alone in the univers, and most importantly: at what time do we eat?

    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? - Yes, tons of times, I couldn't count them! However it's often that I was interested and asked for the sample. The samples I get when I didn't ask for anything rarely lead to a purchase, in fact I rarely use them.

4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? - AT WHAT TIME DO WE EAT?

    5. Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing? - My Bioderma micellar water. I tried others but they're not all equal.

OMG. You are so right about Bioderma I have been on this quest to purchase almost every micellar water ever invented and I have yet to find one I like as much as Bioderma. Now that there is a company that sells it in the US I won't have to stalk evilbay to get it!

  2. Of course it's The Beatles, especially given that some of the Stones' early hits were actually written by Lennon/McCartney!

    1. I wear no blush. I really only like gel/cream blushes and for the most part, I don't need them b/c I have that youthful, healthy glow. Yes, feel free to hate me.

    2. Why do hot dogs come in packages of ten and hot dog buns come in packages of eight? Also, Who is Keyser Sose? ;)

3.Yes. not makeup, but skin care. Damn you Mario Badescu & DHC!

    4. As a Jedi I am beholden to ask, what led you to the dark side? Who wronged you that you were led down the path of anger and hate or was it just a search for power?

    5. Moisturizer. I was blessed with good skin and I feel a good moisturizer keeps it that way. I can use just about any cleanser, but I always buy a frou-frou moisturizer.

  3. Wait who sells Bioderma here??? How did I miss that? I've been underwhelmed by the micellars I've tried so far but I hear that one is the Holy Grail, so hope springs eternal...

Botd- nothing yet, I just did some skincare and stuff so I'm letting my moisturizer sink in. I'll probably put my face on when my son naps.

Questions to answer- yea i have a few. I believe in heaven and I'm really hoping to ask some of the people there about their lives. I really wonder if we will just be marinated in knowledge once we arrive, or if we won't care anymore, but I have so many questions because I am very curious....and lots of the ones you listed too (though I'm pretty sure we know who shot JFK). Also I am hoping that there will be all 4 seasons at once (flowers, sunshine, fall leaves and snow haha). I'll stop before I go crazy...

Have I purchased full-sized based on samples? Um, maybe 25% of the time....sometimes the samples just show me that I'm underwhelmed by a product (typically true of high-end mascara samples for me). Sometimes the full size is just too far out of my price range. Right now I am considering getting the full size of the Laura Mercier Radiance foundation primer and the full-size of Ole Hendriksen Truth Serum but they may have to wait til my birthday in the spring. I love perfume samples but I feel like when I buy the full size I'm sure to tire of it before I can use it up you know?

Q for U: Mmm, what's your favourite holiday food or indulgence? And what is your favourite and least favourite thing about your house? (Random I know haha.)

One thing you'll never skimp on? Tough call....I definitely shell out more money for really good moisturizers with skin-communicating ingredients and SPF, but I'm not loyal to just one. I skimped out on the last oil cleanser I bought and it wasn't nearly as good as the MAC one so I will be repurchasing that soon!

    1. Beautyhabit.com sells it. I have no idea for how long they have been selling it, but I just discovered it.

My favorite Holiday Food indulgence....Pecan Pie. Pure sugar but sooooooo good. Only second to Christmas Cookies which were used to lure me to the Dark Side (see above)

Least favorite thing about my home. It's messy...really messy I blame the bad Fueng Shui and lack of closet space.

    2. That's awesome, thanks for mentioning it!

Yea I'm a sucker for my mum's holiday breads, and I make lots of cookies and truffles and caramels.

Ooooh lack of closet space is a killer! I hear that!

  4. Blush of the day- too early for makeup here.

mystery- exactly what my cat did when he disappeared into the neighborhood for 3 and a half weeks

sample- most definitely. Estee Lauder serums and Benefit's Hello Flawless were the last ones. Companies need to be more generous with samples. Skincare samples are usually too tiny to be able to see a difference from continued use.

Question for you- has Mr. Sith ever tried any of your makeup products? the Mr Sith gift picks for guys post has piqued my curiosity.

Product I will not skimp on- Skincare. Estee Lauder serums, Clinique extra mild Toner, shiseido the Skincare Extra gentle cleansing foam

  5. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Just natural skin today. Been traveling and it needs a break.

    2. Do you have a question or a mystery that you would like answered or solved one day? - I really want to know why I persisted in watching every Twilight movie even though they are so bad. My behavior is inconsistent with my sentiments.

    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? - Maybe back in the day when I used to get Clinique's Gift with Purchase. But hardly ever anymore. I've decided I sort of hate samples.

4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? - Why?
    5. Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing? - Shampoo and conditioner. I know that's two, but every time I try drug store brands my hair looks great for about a month then starts doing bad things (like splitting).

    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? - Yeah, I think I discovered a few La Roche Posay products like that. And fragrances.

4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? - How much time to you approximately spend finishing one blog entry? Do you have things lined up in advance, or do you post "à la minute"?

    5. Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing? - I'll never go for low-budget skin care and cleansers.

    1. From beginning to end or just writing it. Because you know picture editing can take a while. Bust assuming you mean just writing it I think it can take me anywhere from 30 min to an hour, depending on what I'm writing about. Like if I have to cite references, ingredients, other blog entries etc. Then there is spell check, which I actually do, but I still miss stuff, formatting and then adding in the photos.

I try to have things written in advance but I am a terrible procrastinator and many times I am writing the day of the post. A terrible habit that no blogger should have especially if they need info from the brand or something. I'm trying to get better about it....but not trying very hard. I know some bloggers that have 2 weeks worth of posts "in the can". I don't think I could ever do that.

  7. Its my first time commenting on your blog, even thought I read it frequently and read your fb posts :) (I am Nora B-M on FB).

    But here it goes:

    1. Blush Of The Day? Dior rosy glow
    2. Do you have a question or a mystery that you would like answered or solved one day? I assume this might be beauty related...because I wont start in the theoretical physics, which is what I work in/study. Anyways...where did my MAC lipglass in furry of fun go or where did my Bobbi brown mini corrector palette go? No clue...
    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? Too many to recall :(
4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? Whats your favorite foundation/Concealer, and would you consider being featured in my blog? Just a small interview in what products you like etc...
    5. Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing? I like my expensive products. Be it fragrance, skincare or make up. But if I find good budget face products or make up...I dont mind adding them to my collection.

  9. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Clinique Black Honey shimmer thing + Tarina Tarantino Carved Rose (to make it a little pinker).

    2. Do you have a question or a mystery that you would like answered or solved one day? - I'm sure there is something but I just can't think of it right now.

    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? - I actually did this probably for the first time last night...I had gotten the Ole Hendriksen Truth Serum in a deluxe sample size (more like mini, it was .5oz) with my Clairsonic when I bought it through QVC. I am getting down to the end and this is one item I feel like my skin will miss if I miss a day. I have never thought that skincare really had any effect on me until now. I also wanted to try some of his other items (especially the skin invigorating night gel) so I got the 3 wonders set at Sephora last night.

4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? - Why are you so awesome? lol :)

    5. Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing? - Mattifying powder I guess. I find cheaper stuff isn't finely milled enough to go over my greasy face later in the day...I also only buy Asian facial cotton, not quite as spoiled as you are but close lol.

  10. My first time commenting here, though I have have been reading for several months.

Someone asked about the captchas: one man created a computer program that somehow does this magic thing with taking words from books and creating the captchas. When we type the words in, we are actually helping to put these books into some project for a free online library or something. This isn't true for all captchas, but it's the program for many of them. I saw it on an episode of NovaScience Now on PBS a couple of years ago. It was a really interesting segment and you might be able to find it online (my description did not do it justice and is probably inaccurate).

  11. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Illamasqua Powder Blush in Tremble. I'm super red too, but I can't give up my pink blushes. One of my friends teases me because "you do so much to cover and minimize the red in your face, and then you put more red on!"

    2. Do you have a question or a mystery that you would like answered or solved one day? - I would like to know why I can't keep track of my friggin' tweezers, and where all of the pairs have disappeared to over the years. I never find them when I rearrange furniture, or move out, or anything D:

    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? - Yes, pretty often. I do that with a lot of the 'indie' companies, especially with eye shadows. I've also done it with Hourglass Mineral Veil, Urban Decay's Naked Foundation, Lancome's Teint Idole Ultra 24H, Meow Cosmetic's Pampered Puss foundation (it took me a while to find foundations I could love, ok) and several Murad products.

4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? - If you had one piece of advice for an aspiring beauty blogger, what would it be? More than one piece is also acceptable :P

    5. Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing? - There are two, one is sunblock/sunscreen and the other is foundation. I spent a looooong time looking for the perfect foundation and a sunblock that worked, wasn't sticky, and lasted. I'm also pretty self-spoiled when it comes to color eye shadow, because you can't skimp on that.

    1. I never have ONE piece of advice, you know that! I will say Be true to yourself. Be honest, even if it means people may not agree, never compromise your integrity and HAVE FUN! If you start to feel like blogging is chore, then you're doin' it wrong. I write for the enjoyment of writing. You might write for the enjoyment of testing makeup or being social with people...whatever reason you have for blogging, don't let that passion turn into a penance.
network. get on blog rolls of other blogs, tweet and get on Facebook. Make friends with other bloggers and act as a sounding board for those bloggers and ask them to do the same in return
Be consistent. Blog every day, or every other day or whatever, but be consistent. Don't apologize to readers for not blogging in a while. a) They don't care and b) it's insincere.
Keep your voice. If i started doing "clinical" type reviews all of a sudden I think 1/2 my readers would disappear. If someone like Temptalia started to do crazy stories all of a sudden 1/2 her readers would disappear too. You have a specific voice and people like your blog for that. Keep true to it and more people will fall in love with it, or not.
Do not blog with the idea of making money. Beauty blogging is one of the LOWEST money making type of blogging out there. Trust me. I couldn't make a living off of this blog even if I wanted to. It's just not possible.
HAVE FUN! Oh wait I said that already. But it's super important to have fun with what you do ir bears repeating!

And it's definitely not for the money, from what I can tell, the people who do make a lot of money have kind of sold out and are basically advertising. I'm too mouthy and opinionated to fib, even for cash. I just want to share my love of certain products, tips I've learned, swatches, opinions, etc.

    2. Do you have a question or mystery that you would like answered or solved one day? Where exactly do all those missing socks go?

    3. Have you ever purchased a full-size beauty item after being given a sample? I recently got my mom some L'Occitane hand cream for Christmas and got a couple samples of their Precious Eye Balm and I haven't yet but I plan to buy it. It works so much better than my crappy L'Oreal stuff.

    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? - oh all the time! Which is why I am confused when SA's get so snooty with me when I ask for samples. Hm...

4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? - Do you use a mattifying moisturizer? If yes, what brand? I have been searching for the perfect mattifying moisturizer for a LONG long time but none seem to work so I'm beginning to think that it's an unattainable goal and I should just focus on finding a regular light moisturizer or using no moisturizer...

    5. Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing? - serum. 1. I do not use a mattifying moisturizer. however I have used one that REALLY worked. It is from a brand called Repechage and it worked really well. Sadly it had an ingredient (Cyclopentasiloxane) in is that I had a reaction to, but my reaction to this ingredient is not common and MOST people can use this product without any issues. I still highly recommend this moisturizer even though it made me break out from the Cyclopentasiloxane. That's how good it is. Currently I use Mattify Cosmetics Mattify Ultra powder as a primer before I put on foundation and then after to set the foundation.
I think everyone needs a moisturizer. Some of us oily skinned gals tend to skip them, but to be honest sometimes that makes our skin even more oily. I am currently using a moisturizer from a company called Relogy, but I have yet to test it long enough to write a comprehensive review.

    2. I have been wanting to try Relogy but I'll wait and see what you have to say about it. I'm hesitant to spend money on it if it doesn't work.

    3. I do remember your review for the Repechage moisturizer but sadly, I am also sensitive to cyclopentasiloxane, so I won't be trying it :/ I didn't mean that I would not moisturize at all but I do already use a serum that provides some moisture, I just always wanted to find THE perfect mattifying moisturizer to go on top of it. For now, I guess I will just stick with the serum though :/ *sigh* CURSE YOU OILY SKIN!!!

    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? - Dude, same as you. And probably regretted it on at least half those occasions. :/

4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? - Why did you name your dog Floyd?

We wanted to give out new puppy a Bulldog sounding name but each one we thought of either sounded too cliche (Sarge, Dozer, Winston) or not very bulldog like (Rex, Rover, Fido) we were at a July 4th party and our host was roasting a whole pig. He had named the roasts pig, Floyd. As soon as we heard the name my husband and I turned to each other and said "Floyd! That's perfect!" Floyd's AKC (American Kennel Ckub) name is:
Baron Floyd von Rubberbelly KB's Beauty and Beasts
We just call him Floyd or stinky

  16. Why is the Shiseido facial cotton so much better than the $1.99 cotton pads from Target? Not that I need a reason to spend more money...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Humm. Let's see.
      1) The cotton pads don't hold in the moisture from the makeup remover or toner that you are trying to apply to your face, so you actually use less product
      2) They feel like silky clouds made out of angel wings against your face
      3) They are inspected to make sure no errant bits of foreign materials are mixed in. I think we have all seen a cotton puff with a little bit of a leave or twig in it before
      4) They are large enough to use only half so they last twice as long
      5) They are not harsh on delicate or sensitive skin so when using for makeup removal they don't tug at your eyes or feel rough.

I will say I will use any old cotton pad to remove my nail polish. I'm not picky when it comes to that. :-)

    5. Sunscreen. I will never again buy anything except Alba Botanica. A few years ago, I bought some from Loving Naturals cause everyone kept telling me how awesome their sunscreen was. I missed that they don't use a preservative in their water-based formulation. Two weeks later, I had a yeast infection ON MY FACE!!!!!!! The doc said she had never seen that before. The treatment made me breakout, but it got rid of the yeast. Never again.

  18. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Illamasqua cream blush in Betray. My new favorite!
    2. Do you have a question or a mystery that you would like answered or solved one day? - I'd love to know if there are people who are actually psychic.
    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? Only fragrances. I don't find skincare samples to be large enough to get a real feel for the product, and any foundation samples I get are always wrong, wrong, wrong.
4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? Do you ever get out the goth gear and makeup?
    5. Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing? I can't think of anything. I really love my Boscia cleasing oil, but if something came along that was cheaper and as good I would buy it.

    1. Oh I am such a bad goth, Abbey. I haven't put on a corset and boots in ages. I sometimes do my makeup slightly goth but never full on out. I think the main reasons for that are
      1) I'm too fat for my old goth clothing
      2) I'm living in suburbia so going to DC to a club is kind of a pain
      3) I'm freakin OLD! Old goths are a special breed and sometimes they look silly.
      Now I wanna play dressup!

  19. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Bissú eye shadow in Bermellón, well today I am not using it, but is in fact the only blush I've ever used (and it isn't a blush XD)

    2. Do you have a question or a mystery that you would like answered or solved one day? - Why I haven't won the lotto? If I were rich I'd improve the economy by buying a lot of things XD

    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? - Yes, recently I bought a La Roche- Posay cleanser after the sales person give me a lot of samples.

4.Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? - Why are you so mad about taupe? And generally why are you so kinda crazy? (I like it)

    5. Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing? - Right now I don't any but I have to say any complexion makeup I prefer buy mid or high-end because here there aren't any tester in drugstores and supermarkets!

    1. I'm in love with taupe because
      a) It's a silly thing to be obsessed with
      b) I'm naturally drawn to that color and keep purchasing more even though i have too many
      c) It can be dressed up or dressed down
      d) I'm crazy!

And I'm not really crazy in real life. I just pretend to be to amuse you all! :-)

  20. 1. Blush Of The Day? Dior Pink In Love

    2. Do you have a question or a mystery that you would like answered or solved one day? Every single question I ever had that was unresolved. For real.

    3. Have you ever purchased a full size beauty item after being given a sample? High-end mascaras fall into this category. I only ever bother with Dior at that price point. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation (but I had to ask her to make one for me, to put into my little pot, so not sure it really counts). Brands really need to give out more samples, I buy so many products I would never have even considered.

    4. Do you have a question for me that you would like me to answer? You've actually hit pan on blushes. How long does it take to actually finish a blush? I am so curious about this one. Also, another question? How did you come up with the idea for your banner and did you draw it yourself? When I first saw it, it was a true laugh out loud moment, I thought it was brilliant!

    5. Is there one item that you use in your beauty routine (skin care, makeup, hair care, etc.) that you will never skimp on or buy an inferior product because it is supposed to do pretty much the same thing? Moisturizer. It's too important and so easy to go wrong, so unless I know the cheaper product is identical in performance, I will always save for it.

    1. OK. I have hit pan on 3 blushes and one MSF (Highlighter) in my lifetime (I'm sure I hit pan on other blushes in the past, but that was before I really started to pay attention to makeup.)
My Rouge Bunny Rouge blush used every day as a contour lasted me 9-10 months
My Chanel Narcisse blush used almost every day for 6 months and then occasionally after that, lasted me about 2 years before I hit pan

As for my banner image. I commissioned an artist that goes by Geek-Lee-Tist http://geekleetist.com/ He is super awesome and a friend of mine. He also sells a lot of his work on various websites. :-)
