ZuZu Luxe Starlet Lipstick and Caliente Lip Gloss - Review, Pictures, Swatches

I was recently offered a chance to try out some cosmetics from ZuZu Luxe. An offshoot of Gabriel Cosmetics.  I had never heard of the brand, but was intrigued and was excited to try out their products.  I read that Gabriel Cosmetics, Gabriel Skincare, ZuZu Luxe and Clean Kids Naturally are cruelty-free products. The ZuZu Luxe products are Gluten Free and Vegan too!  Gabriel products are made from 100% natural ingredients. No synthetic chemicals or animal by-products are utilized, and no testing is ever done on animals.  According to the website, the ZuZu Luxe luxury color cosmetics line uses soothing, all natural ingredients, such as spring water, herbs and vitamins as well as rare and exotic essential oils. I was really excited to receive my lipstick in Starlet and lip gloss in Caliente and give them a test run.

Let's start with the ZuZu Luxe Lipstick.  This gluten free lipstick comes in 24 shades and, as far as the red color I chose called "Starlet", seems to have a long lasting wear.  I was worried about the feel of the lipstick, I didn't want it to feel too dry, but it really was not an issue at all. In fact, my lips felt incredibly moisturized when I applied and wore the lipstick. Long after my initial application my lips still felt soft and well moisturized.  A good non drying red lipstick is one of the most important things for me.

If I'm wearing red lipstick (and we all know HOW MUCH I LOVE RED LIPSTICK) I don't want my lips looking like a dead loofah sponge. If the lipstick is drying I'll be sporting that scary "86 year old spinster aunt" lip that you see once a year at the holidays.

You know what I'm talking about. You have that one great aunt that always wears some bright lipstick and always wants you to give her a kiss.  Her vision is going and her lipstick application skills are not the best and the last time she exfoliated anything on her body was probably 1978.  YOu bend down to kiss her and it results in you getting asphyxiated by the scent of Bengay, mothballs and old newspapers and pass out.  Then when you regain consciousness you realize that you have a scaly red lip imprint in on your forehead or cheek, but it's not a full imprint, it's like a smudge with half a lip because your great aunt is always doing those half kisses where she tries not to kiss you directly, because that would mess up her lipstick.  But because she's is 86 years old after all, and she is half standing up trying to get out of her chair, she falters a bit and ends up kissing you half way before she falls back into the recliner and takes another sip of her egg nog.

The ZuZu Luxe lipstick is NOTHING like your spinster aunt's lipstick. It is the antithesis, the opposite, the 180 degree difference. It is what you imagine a milk bath with heavy cream to be like. It's like having pure honey poured all over you whilst in that milk bath. It's like you are Cleo-Freakin-Patra herself!  Yeah. ZuZu Luxe is that nice.

Let's talk about the color.  Bright candy apple red.  This is no lipstick for a shrinking violet this is a bold, I'm here and I'm ready to kick butt and take names kind of lipstick.  Of course there are 24 other shades if you are not in a taking names kind of mood.  The candy apple red is slightly blue based so those with warmer toned skin might find this not to their liking...but hey, you have other colors to choose from, right?  I think this lipstick would be a great introduction to brighter reds for those that are wanting to take the plunge into red lips but want a less opaque and more translucent finish for their red lip look.

The ZuZu Luxe Lipstick retails for $18.15.

Ingredients:  Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride,  Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius(Safflower) Seed Oil, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Lecithin, Crithmum Maritimum (Sea Fennel) Extract, Bisabolol, Gum resin obtained from trees, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Iron Oxides, Mica, Hypericum Perforatum (St. John’s Wort) Extract, Titanium Dioxide

On to the ZuZu Luxe Lip Gloss.   This is also a Gluten free product and comes in 12 shades.  The soothing formula with Jojoba oil, Shea Butter and and Sweet Almond Oil really makes wearing this gloss a treat. I thought it was going to be all goopy and slippery with all the essential oils in it.  But it was spot on perfect. This gloss is not too sticky and not too slick. It's in the Goldilocks zone for gloss.  The Caliente color I received is really nicely pigmented and I wore this alone and on top of the Starlet lipstick. I was really surprised to see that is was more pigmented and more opaque than the Starlet lipstick!  The shiny, glossy finished reminded me of that one cousin you see every year at the holidays.

You know that cousin. The one that is from your mom's side of the family and still thinks it's 1988? In fact she's not even a first cousin, but like a 2nd cousin or maybe a 3rd cousin and it's never been clear how she is related to you.  Yeah. That's the one.  She always shows up in a horrible Christmas sweater with a white turtleneck, she has a bad perm and bangs a mile high. You have a sneaking suspicion that the hole in the ozone layer was caused in no small part to the amount of hairspray she has used in her lifetime.  Her makeup is always overdone and she has managed to find a cache of lip gloss that has probably been banned in many European countries because the petroleum levels in it are so high. The gloss is always super goopy and migrating from her lips faster than you can migrate away from her when you meet up at the buffet table.  By the end of the evening she has reapplied her gloss so many times and you have watched it slowly drip down her lips that you could have sworn she was in a fried chicken eating contest.  Thankfully the term "Kissin' Cousins" does not apply and you needn't worry about getting any of that gloss on your face.

The ZuZu Luxe Lip Gloss is totally NOT like your cousin's gloss at all.  In fact, it is shiny but it stays in place all day, and while her gloss might be able to solve the world's energy crisis the ZuZu Luxe gloss has sweet almond oil, shea butter and a host of other good for your lips essential oils to keep your pucker hydrated all night long.  The shine doesn't wear off all that fast, for a gloss, and combined with the Starlet Lipstick, the Caliente Lip Gloss is one hot ticket to babesville; population, You!

Which is where you want to be when you eventually end up at your friends house for an after Christmas party and that hot guy from the gym is there. You just so happen to be standing under the mistletoe when he approaches you with a drink and...well let's just say that Starlet and Caliente seem to look good on him too!

Do you NEED this?  Let's put it this way. If you don't want to end up looking like your spinster Aunt or your creepy Cousin, YES you need this.  Also if you are looking for gluten free cosmetics, or have a friend that cannot have gluten then YES you need this.  The cruelty free status is always a plus.  Sure the price point is a little higher than some brands, but I believe that the quality is there.

What say you?  Do these reds tempt you?  What about other colors?  Did I really describe one of your relatives?
