The topic for this week’s poll is all about Comic Sans Font!  I know it might be annoying to some to even look at, and others might not even understand why there is so much vitriol for something as inane as a font.  But alas there is.  In fact there is even a website called bancomicsans.com that lists article after article about the evils of this font.  The origin of Comic Sans can be attributed to or blamed on Vincent Connare.  In 1994, while working for Microsoft, Mr. Connare designed the font to be used with Microsoft Bob, a now failed attempt at making MS operating systems more child friendly.  The font was based on lettering from comic books, hence the Comic Sans moniker.  According to statements from Connare, he never intended the font to be released for general use, and only designed it to be used in comic-book-style speech bubbles within MS Bob.  Yeah right. He says that now because there is so much hate. I wonder if he would be singing the same tune if Comic Sans was lovingly embraced by the world. Comic Sans is perfectly fine in designs aimed at children or designs related to comic books or cartoons but it has NO PLACE in the business and professional world.  I'm also NOT a fan of it being used on beauty blogs.  That's just my personal opinion. Regardless, Comic Sans has popped up all over the damn place.    I think my biggest complaint against Comic Sans is that is gives a very definite tone or feeling when it is used.  That tone being mainly, amateurish, immature, informal, and childish.  Comic Sans is the Nickelback of Fonts.  I'll prove it.  Everyone says they hate [insert "Comic Sans" or "Nickelback"] Yet it is still being [insert "used" or "sold"] like crazy.  If people hated [insert "Comic Sans" or "Nickelback"] so much you think [insert "the font" or "the band"] would just go away! See? Proof positive!  Even Time Magazine stated that Comic Sans was the Worst Font of all time. That's gotta mean something, right?  Oh well, It's just a font after all.  No reason to get so upset, right?  RONG!  If it wasn't for teh interwebs there would be so many things we would hate and have no idea that others felt the same way!  Thank you teh interwebz for bringing us together in our collective disgust for an overused and immature font!

5.  Last beauty item you purchased? - A tweezerman Lash comb.  I love it because the tines are mega thin and pointed so it gets between clumpy lashes easily. But the pointy tines fall out sometimes when you clean it and are not easily reinserted.  It's a win/lose thing, but I have yet to find a lash comb that is better.

Highlighters You Can't Have #5 - Revlon Feelin' Flirty Pink Flush - Review, Swatches, Pictures

It's that time again. Time to show you yet another highlighter in the series of Highlighters You Can't Have. I started this series with a Dior Highlighter that was 4 years old, I then teased you with a Guerlain Highlighter that was released only a few months before but had sold out in almost seconds, then I showed you an Estee Lauder Highlighter that was not only limited release, limited edition and discontinued, but possibly one of the prettiest highlighters I own. Then I repeated the Estee Lauder Theme with a sparkling gold highlighter the size of my palm called Shimmering Jewel Powder. I might be cheating a little bit with this month's Highlighter You Can't Have.  You see it is technically labeled a Blush, but this so-called blush is so light and so shimmery there is no way it can be anything BUT a highlighter. So Sayeth I. So Sayeth All.

The Revlon Feelin' Flirty Blush Pink Flush Highlighter is a limited edition release that came out in 2005.  It is housed in the typical plastic flimsy packaging that Revlon issues (can you tell I'm not a fan?)  The top is clear so you can see the product. However the lid has a small hinge which after several uses could break. I had another blush from Revlon break this way and it drove me bonkers. I eventually just trashed the thing because it was too much trouble to keep reattaching the lid.  But It's not only about the packaging, right? It's what is inside that counts.

Inside you see a pretty pink heart shaped from the powder.  Now please note that the shimmer you see is an over-spray. Once that is gone there is a more "matte looking" powder underneath.  I use quotations (incorrectly, probably) for the phrase matte looking because it's not really matte.  It actually has shimmer in it.  It's subtle, but it is there.  That's why I really think it is more of a highlighter than a blush. Plus, as I said above, this is my blog, my reality I make the rules. (hey, it's one of the very few things I can control in my life. let me have this one thing. OK?)

OK. But how is the powder quality?  Not bad actually. I was surprised because I'm not really a fan of drugstore cosmetics, but this Revlon blush highlighter is pretty decent quality. The powder is smooth and silky. there is no chunky glitter in it.  It applies well and lasts a decent amount of time.

The color.  well I think the color is where the complaint about quality, I have read in other reviews, comes in. Revlon Feelin' Flirty blush Pink Flush highlighter is a very, very pale pink. It is a cool pink on top of that, so the paleness combined with the cool tone make it look "chalky" on darker and warm skin tones.  One would need to be fair skinned to really pull this off as a blush, but fair/light to medium cool skin tones could definitely wear this as a highlighter and it wouldn't look chalky at all.  The highlighter, if applied to heavily, can look chalky, but many products, if applied heavily can look chalky, so I really don't see that as a valid criticism of this blush highlighter.  Once applied (correctly) the sheerness of the powder combined with the light color and the subtle shimmer imparts a gossamer like radiance to the face.  

Yes. I said gossamer like radiance.  It really is that pretty.  I love wearing this when I am doing a minimal eye makeup look with a bold lip.  The combination of the color and shimmer make this blush highlighter look so natural and elegant.

 

While this series is called Highlighters You Can't Have, that's not always the case.  EvilBay, Amazon and Big Lots stores will sometimes have this specific Revlon Blush Highlighter for sale. But that is the beauty and sometimes pain of this series, is it not. It's to see an item that is rare, old, pretty and might be, just might be attainable.  If you look hard enough, and pay enough money you can find almost any discontinued makeup product.  Powder products are easier to find than creme products but they are out there, somewhere.

Models Own Nail Polish in Juicy Jules - Review, Pictures, Swatches

How much can one say about nail polish? I mean it either looks pretty or it doesn't, right?  Sure I could speak of the viscosity of the polish, the wear time, the application, etc, but I think that by now you all know what to expect from certain brands.

Models Own nail polish in Juicy Jules is a clear base with small silver and holographic glitter suspended in it.  It applies well. Is not overly thick nor does it chip easily.  The polish in these photos is two coats over Color Club nail polish in Black covered tips.  I chose not to coat my entire nail in approximately 4 coats of Juicy Jules to achieve the opaque glitter finish. However, had I done that, I would have used my trusty Glitter Nail Polish Removal Technique to change my polish.

Today is not about nail polish. It's about Unicorns.

Unicorns?

Yes. Unicorns.  And even more so, Unicorn Dandruff.  If Unicorns were susceptible to dandruff I believe that their dandruff would look like Models Own nail polish in Juicy Jules.  

We have "Unicorn Pee" which is the long since discontinued Clarins 230. We have "Unicorn Puke" from Cult Nails, was renamed Clairvoyant, but then also discontinued, why not have Unicorn Dandruff?  The base is too clear to be Unicorn poop or snot, Yes. I think Unicorn Dandruff is appropriate.

Sometimes when people draw unicorns they add wings, for some reason. A horse with wings is called a Pegasus. A horse with one horn is called a Unicorn.  So what is a horse with wings AND a horn called?

Is it like a Mule?  You know. A mule is when a horse and a donkey mate and the mule is the offspring. (I don't know why it's not called a Dorse or a Honkey...oh wait.  I do know why.)   Mules are always sterile.  Horses and Zebras have been mated creating a Zorse, which is also sterile.  Using the scientific method I would then have to surmise that like the mating of most other animal hybrids, a Pegasus/Unicorn offspring would also be sterile.  I'm glad we established that.

What does one call a Pegasus and Unicorn hybrid?  Pegicorn? Unisus? Unipeg?  According to wikipedia The foremost authority on everything on the interwebz*  

"A winged unicorn, pegacorn, unipeg or alicorn is a fictional equine with a set of wings and a horn. The term alicorn, which describes the theoretical substance that a unicorn's horn is made from, has also been used as a name for winged unicorns."

*This is written with sarcasm. Wikipedia is known for having glaring errors when it comes to certain facts, but hey, it's fast and you get the general answer.

So I guess I like Unipeg. Alicorn sounds silly. And Unisis sounds too much like a corporate entity that delivers mainframe computing  and software development..  So Unipeg it is.

Well, I'm glad that's settled.

Foundation Fridays Lancome Dual Finish Versatile Powder Makeup - Review Pictures Swatches

Welcome again to Foundation Friday!  I thought I would take a break from BB creams and tell you about a powder foundation that I have been using off an on for 15 years!  Lancome Dual Finish Versatile Powder Makeup. My color is Matte Porcelain I (C) (The lightest shade…of course)

The Lancome Dual Finish Versatile Powder Makeup is actually VERSATILE!  How nice of them to use truth in advertising.  This powder can be used wet or dry. It provides a range of coverage from full to light but the finish is always matte.  I personally like to use it applied with a kabuki brush over my BB cream for a flawless finish, but you can apply it on a bare, yet moisturized and primed face.

The powder comes with two puffs. One is a fairly thick makeup type sponge puff and the other is a thin touch up application puff.  If you choose to apply the powder wet and dry I prefer to use only one side of the powder for wet application because the powder does seem to get a bit of a crust on it when it dries from being used wet.  The "wet application" puff is sturdy and rinses out well, remember to keep it clean because you don't want to harbor bacteria on the sponge and transfer it to your face, right?  

As far as application goes, here is what I like to do.  For wet application, I put the puff under the tap, get the puff wet, wring it out and then apply it to the powder.  Once you have transferred enough to the sponge I like to alternate between smoothing a patting the sponge on my face working in sections.  Then once the foundation is applied and dried I like to take a kabuki brush and buff it out to eliminate any lines or marks from application.  The finish is almost opaque.  When applying dry I use a kabuki brush and apply it in circular movements working in sections around my face.  The coverage can range from medium to light depending on how much powder you use. The most important thing to remember about the finish is that it looks almost flawless.  I get this airbrushed look to my skin which I ADORE!

The things I like about this foundation:

It does not break me out!  Unlike MAC Studio Fix which broke me out terribly, Lancome Dual Finish Versatile Powder Makeup does not irritate my skin, cause breakouts or seem to cause any blemishes.

The Powder never seems to settle into my pores or fine lines.  It does not emphasise fine lines or pores as long as I prep my skin for application first (Primer / Moisturizer)

You can achieve different levels of coverage

It does tend to keep the oilies at bay slightly longer when I use it over my BB cream.

The powder comes in 26 different shades. It has a nice range of colors and tones for warm or cool skin. (Most important it comes in a shade light enough for ME!)

The compact is well designed.  It can easily fit in my purse or makeup bag, comes with an ample mirror, and a protective plastic tray for the puff to rest on inside the compact

OK. so some people complain about the scent of the powder, but I guess I have been using it so long I have grown used to the scent.

Some people complain about the price.  It retails for $36.50. I guess I have become jaded because I don't think that's too much to pay for a department store foundation. (Hello Armani LSF is almost $60!)

Do you NEED this?  If you have oily or combination skin, this powder foundation might be just the thing you are looking for this summer.  It provides a great matte finish, works well with oily to combo skin and comes in a wide range of shades.  If you have dry skin, I really don't recommend using this powder foundation. It won't emphasize fine lines, but I doubt your dry skin would feel comfortable  all day long using it.  Now here's the thing. I said I had been using this off and on for 15 years.  I go through phases where I use it, then I find a new foundation landfall in love with that and the Lancome Dual Finish Versatile Powder Makeup goes by the way side.  Then my skin starts looking wonky and I reach for the Lancome and POOF!  My skin looks awesome again.  I'm not sure why I keep doing this to myself, but I am VERY glad that this is one of the few foundations that Lancome has NOT discontinued in the last 15 years!  I'm not sure what I would do if I didn't have it anymore.

Thursday Poll

This has been the longest week ever.  It always seems that the week before a holiday is soooo long.  I have this Friday off of work and Monday is Memorial Day in the US, so I actually get 4 day weekend instead of a 3 day weekend.  What bugs me about the US is that now almost every holiday there is a costume for sale that goes along with it.  You know, nothing says 'I Love America' more than a metallic blue lamé bustier and hot pants.

Or how about this one paying homage to your German ancestry yet still feelin the red white and blue with a Hofbräuhaus Server outfit in patriotic colors, of course.

Want to pay homage to the military this Memorial Day?   Well why not dress up as a slutty sailor.  Nothing says 'I respect the women and men in uniform' more, than a lot of cleavage or white fishnet stockings.

Lest we forget our most beloved icon of freedom in America, The Statue of Liberty.  Why not give that French gal a much needed makeover with a micro mini dress made from fabric cut to the same size as our actual Constitution! 

Ah yes.  America. Red, White, Blue and slutty.  Don't get me wrong. I'm not hating on the pretty women in these photos. They all have beautiful bodies.  What I don't like is that these costumes give the impression that nothing is sacred anymore.  That SEX has to be inserted (pardon the pun) into all facets of our celebrations.  I'm not a prude. I like to look and feel sexy. I just think there is a time and a place for it.  Going out to a nightclub = Look sexy. Going to a memorial day picnic = Look pretty, the sexy can come later when you are participating in the memorial day car wash and you re-enact that scene from Cool Hand Luke.

But back to my point.  a) You don't need a costume for every freakin holiday.  I saw costumes for St. Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day. I bet there is even a slutty Easter costume out there! There sure as heck are slutty Mrs. Claus costumes.  b) You don't need to dress like a slut to look sexy.  Sure.  Show off the goods from time to time. You work hard to look that good, but sometimes cutoff shorts and a t-shirt look sexier to a guy than star spangled hot pants.  c) I can't believe you haven't seen Cool Hand Luke?!  The "What we have here is a failure to communicate." line is from that movie.  "No One can eat 50 eggs." scene is awesome.  Plus Paul Newman looks hot!

Sexy costumes do have their place. Halloween, Costume Parties, Comic Book conventions, The Bedroom, but please let's keep the day when we honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, a little less provocative. (and yes I see the irony of asking people to not use their "freedom of expression" AKA Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, on a day where we honor people who fought to maintain that RIGHT.  I'm just making a suggestion. It's not like I'm trying to pass some law that will limit someones ability to have the right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. That would be Un-American.) <---- see what I did there?
