My Favorite Top 10 Blog Posts of 2012

It seems like everyone and their cousin are dong top/fave/best of 2012 posts. And since I am a slacker and don't feel like editing more photos right now I think I shall entertain you (I hope) with some of my favorite blog posts from this past year.

Things to keep in mind
a) I know the year isn't over but I'm not going to be any more creative and silly as I have been with these top 10 posts!

b) I only chose 10 items, but I have additional ones not listed, because choosing my favorite blog post is like asking to choose a favorite child. I just can't and I didn't want to do a Sophie's Choice.

c) The criteria I used to determine a top pick was
     i.  Did I have fun writing the post?
ii. Did I use obscure references, images, songs, videos, etc?
iii.  Did I create a fairy tale that should really be a bedtime story for makeup obsessed toddlers?

If I answered yes to at least 2 of the criteria it became a top pic. To whittle down the list I basically arbitrarily picked items I thought you all would find more interesting than others.  (A little bit of science and a little bit of BS = My Top Pics!)

1.  Omorovicza Radiance Renewal Serum:  While mostly a fairy tale I thought it got the point across that this stiff is full of awesome and everyone needs it.  However the people over at Omorovicza, didn't think as highly of it.  Oh well.

2.  Balenciaga Florabotanica Eau de Parfum: A gritty "Film Noir Detective Narrative" inspired this little tale about perfume and mystery.

3.  LORAC Unzippied Palette:   I actually had to look up words that started with the letters 'UN' in order to complete my review of this UNbelievably UNusual palette from LORAC

4.  Models Own Juicy Jules Nail Lacquer:  If any blog post about nail polish can involve the talk of Unicorns or Pegasus then that is an excellent blog post indeed.

5.  Medicine Mama's Apothecary - Sweet Bee Magic: The incredibly sweet and completely untrue story of how "Sweet Bee Magic" came into being. Thankfully the people at Medicine Mama's Apothecary LIKED my review!

6.  NARS Eyeshadow Single in Lhasa:  It has shown up on almost every list I did in 2012.  It's that good! If you aren't into taupe eyeshadow, it's still worth the read for entertainment alone.

7.  ManGlaze Matte Nail Color in Santorum:  Oh this caused a lot of scandal.  I tried my best to be objective, but when you're dealing with a matte brown nail polish named after a slang of a  byproduct of a certain encounter which was named because a man with the same last name was very against certain rights for certain people...well.  It gets a little messy to say the least

8.  OC Eight Professional Mattifying Gel: I post this for the sheer hilarity of my face covered in Hello Kitty blotting papers.  The review is almost inconsequential after seeing that image!

9.  NARS Vent Glace Duo Eyeshadow Review:  Another Fairytale story with  little twist at the end.  Beware that Dally Cowboy Fans may want to skip this after the loss to the Redskins on the 39th of December.

10: Natura BIsse nb Ceutical Eye Recovery Balm:  I think I chose the wrong profession. I could have totally written scripts for those As Seen On TV commercials.  Thankfully the loverly people at Natura Bisse have a sense of humor and enjoyed my review!

Of course I have other favorites that didn't quite make the list, so I suggest that you search through the 2012 archives and decide for yourself which post you like the most.  I'd be flattered if you would let me know if you have one that you particularly enjoy.

The Lipstick League – week of 12.24.12

Question of the Week - Do you have any beauty resolutions that you’ll be making for 2013? Or anything you just want to improve/avoid/get better at this year when it comes to beauty?

Answer - I want to get better about applying foundation that looks natural and does not make it look like I'm wearing a mask. In order to do that I need to concentrate on my skin and make it as pretty as possible…this means I need to get a good dermatologist and steer clear of a lot of skincare and products that irritate my skin.   Which means less skin care reviews…maybe…or ones more focused on acne prone skin. I'll also be reading ingredients more closely so i can avoid certain ingredients that cause me to break out.

Phyrra - shares a darkly sparkly blurple eyeshadow tutorial.

we heart this - Ever wonder how to style your hair into a sock bun? Wonder no more!

Beauty Junkies Unite - Catch a sneak peek of spring color, and find out just how lovely the new ZOYA Lovely Collection for spring 2013 really is!

Clumps of Mascara - is just a wee bit obsessed with Josie Maran skincare products these days.

Gouldylox Reviews - I've tested a lot of skincare products. Here is my favorite that you've probably never heard of!

Nouveau Cheap - Physicians Formula has so many interesting goodies in store for us for 2013 that I had to devote an entire blog post to it.

Pink Sith - Shares with you her Top Taupes of Twenty Twelve and all that alliteration stuff!

Prime Beauty - is starting the New Year off with happy healthy hair and you can too! Enter to win a set of DermOrganics hair care products from Prime Beauty!

Guest Post of the Week, as chosen by Phyrra - I chose Scrangie’s Ozotic Nail Polish Swatches because I love Scrangie and I love Ozotic polishes. Scrangie’s always got gorgeous swatches of the most amazing colors.

My Top Taupes of 2012

It seems like everyone and their cousin are dong top/fave/best of 2012 posts. And since I am a slacker and don't feel like editing more photos right now I think I shall entertain you (I hope) with some of my favorite makeup items from this past year.

Things to keep in mind
a) I know the year isn't over and I might blog about some other super awesome fantastic makeup items before the year ends so you should still continue to read The Pink Sith Blog every day.

b) I only chose 6 items, but I had well over 20 from my original list.

c) The criteria I used to determine a top pick was
     i.  Did I use up the item?
ii. If I did not use up the item, did I reach for it on a daily or weekly basis?
iii.  Would I or Did I repurchase this item with my own hard earned money once said product was used up?
If I answered yes to at least 2 of the criteria it became a top pic. To whittle down the list I basically arbitrarily picked items I thought you all would find more interesting than others.  (A little bit of science and a little bit of BS = My Top Pics!)

1)  Armani Easy Chic Fall Color Collection Palette #1 - This palette, aside from having an awesome blush, has a super awesome olive green khaki taupe in the middle of the palette. I adore it for smokey eyes and for Fall Makeup look challenges with the Makeup Wars group!

2) Nars Eyeshadow Single in Lhasa - Already on my top makeup picks of 2012, this eyeshadow deserves it's second accolade as one of the top taupes of 2012.

3)  Rouge Bunny Rouge Loose Glitter Pigment in Caress of Mink - While this pigment might be priced pretty high, the color payoff is worth every penny.  I reach for this baby when I'm in a hurry and want to "taupe and go"…as I like to put it.

4)  Stars Makeup Haven Single Eyeshadow in Primal - This small brand has a lot of potential. With a bevy of taupes to choose from, they also have a wide variety of colors too.  Under new management with new customer service, Stars Makeup Haven will fast become your favorite brand. Primal is so perfect as a crease color or along the lid for an easy smokey eye. I find myself reaching for this baby again and again.

5) Rouge Bunny Rouge Long Lasting Eyeshadow single in Solstice Halcyon - The perfect taupe. This is a workhorse shadow. it goes with everything and looks good on almost everyone.  I have a serous dip in this shadow and expect to see pan any month now!

6) Armani Eyes To Kill Intense Eyeshadow in #27 - This Oxidized Silver shadow is so stunning. I never thought red and silver would make taupe, but here I am making it one of my top taupes of 2012!  This one is my favorite go to silvery taupes!

If anything this list has taught me is that I did NOT feature enough taupes in 2012. I plan to change that in 2013 and feature way more taupes for you to enjoy!

Did you have any top taupes of 2012?

My Top Skin Care Products of 2012

It seems like everyone and their cousin are dong top/fave/best of 2012 posts. And since I am a slacker and don't feel like editing more photos right now I think I shall entertain you (I hope) with some of my favorite makeup items from this past year.

1) Le Metier de Beaute CHEM60 Pro-Peel and GLOW10ai Mask Set  - This amazing yet expensive mask set will set you back several dollars, but the results are like going to a med spa for one of their peels just once.  With the redesigned packaging you can get 8-10 (not the original 3-5) uses out of this at home set. Yes. I have set money aside to purchase this one the holidays are over and the malls clear out.

2)  Mattify Cosmetics Ultra Powder - As oily skinned as I am I really thought there was NOTHING that would keep my oily skin in control…until I tried this awesome powder.  I seriously can go up to 9 hours of shine free skin with this powder.  (Your results may vary) This is so great a purchased  full size last week. It's 3X bigger tun the sample size I received. I should be able to be shine free for the rest of my life….as long as I keep using this!

3) Omorovicza Radiance Renewal Serum - This product is a life saver for me with the changing weather. Going from cold to hot and hot to cold my skin is freaking out.The Omorovicza Radiance Renewal Serum keeps my skin feeling refreshed and "normal" in this crazy weather.  Plus it makes my foundation go on perfectly.  While this is also big bucks to purchase this is one of the few serums I have used that I'm actually sad that I'm nearing the end and I have already repurchased a full size so I will never be without it!

4)  Kiehls Creme de Corps Body Lotion - OK I'm cheating as this is more body care than skin care, but this stuff is so awesome I couldn't leave it off my list for the year. I have already received a larger pump bottle for the holidays (Thank You Santa!) and I am well moisturized from my toes to my neck…remember, my face is oily, the rest of me is not.

5) LORAC Behind The Scenes Eye Primer - After my trusty TFSI eye primer just stopped working for me I picked up the LORAC Behind The Scenes Primer. Wow, what a difference this made.  My shadows were brighter and lasted longer than ever before.  Considering that I have only been using eye primer for about 10 years, I have tried my share of products.  This, by far, is my favorite and is a regular staple in my cosmetics case

6) Stages Of Beauty Skincare Elegance Treatment Cream -  Last but not least, Stages of beauty may be an on line only skin care venture and they may be slightly expensive, but whenever my skin is finally rebelling over all the different skin care I test, I know I can use this creme and my skin will go back to "normal".  I finished this skin cream and immediately purchased another because being without it is like gambling with my looks. I just don't want to go there.

2) Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner - The day you can take away my UD24/7 liners is the day when you pry them from my cold, dead, well manicured fingers! I love these liners so much I wear them EVERY DAY (not all at once)

3) Kat Von D Lock It Tattoo Foundation - This is a life changing foundation for me.  I can finally go out in public and no one realizes that I look lie The Predator under all that makeup!

Thursday Poll

OK. You knew I was going to write about the end of the world right? I mean my obsession with Zombies sure hasn't helped with my curiosity of the supposed impending Apocalypse on December 21st, 2012.  According to someone that thinks they know what they are doing when it comes to reading Mayan Calendars, the world is supposed to end on December 21st, 2012 at 11:00PM E.S.T.  I really don't care how they  (whoever "They" are) figured this out, I'm more amused that there are people out there that believe it.  I wonder what it would be like, if in 2,000 years some other humans unearth the remains of my old and unused Casio day planner and find out the world is supposed to end on March 27th 4015.  Somehow they are able to get batteries to work in this old Casio day planner and through the miracle of computer chips get the calendar feature to engage and the darn thing only has enough memory to go forward 2,000 years and then it can't count any higher. What if these future humans believe the same thing that our present day humans believe and think the world will end on a specific date?  Will they start stockpiling food & water and ammo?  Will they pay attention to the hundreds of thousands of other "doomsday prophecies" that came & went with nothing more than a light wind on the end of the world day that never was?  Nature is so unpredictable.  Nature never tells us when its going to do anything.  We have computers with complicated algorithms that can analyze patterns to try and [predict the weather, but we still never know when there is going to be an earthquake, volcanic eruption, or whatever.  The best we can do is guess.  We can make educated guesses, but we are still just guessing.  The Mayans did not have some special connection with nature that it was able to tell them when the world would finally fall apart (or blow up). If they did, they might have foreseen the Spaniards invading and saved their entire race, right?  The thing is. The end of the world, as we know it, is not happening tomorrow.  How do I know that? Because I think that some archaeologist dug up an old unused day planner from 2,000 years ago, that some Mayan threw out when the Spaniards invaded because it was too heavy to carry while he was fleeing or fighting, and that old Mayan day planner is a lot like my old Casio day planner, it only had enough space on the stone (e.g. memory) to go up to December 21st, 2012. What I would like for tomorrow?  Make it a peaceful day without some crazies trying to blow sh!t up, or kill people or do anything they think might trigger the imagined apocalypse, because I seriously only have so much Xanax and I don't think I can handle more bad news.
On To The Poll!

1.  Lip Of The Day? - Chantecaille Lip Chic in Dahlia. Shiny plummy sheer goodness.

2.  What do you think the over/under on the number of times the song by R.E.M., "It's The End Of The World" will be played on the radio tomorrow? - I think it's about 200 so I'm taking the over.

3.  If the world were ending and you could only grab one lipstick (or gloss), one blush and one eyeshadow to take with you, what would you grab? (please ignore the fact that you really wouldn't need makeup if this were actually happening, let's just pretend.) - I would grab my Guerlain Rouge G de Guerlain Le Brillant Jewel Lipstick Compact in Betsy #B62, my Chanel Joues Contraste Blush in Rose Ecrin, and my Shu Uemura ME Silver 945 eyeshadow.

4.  How annoying do you think TV and Social Media will be on December 21st?   - Ultra mega uber annoying. I plan to stay off Facebook, Twitter and the TV. I'm going to re-read World War Z by Max Brooks, since the movie is coming out soon.

5.  With the end of the YEAR soon approaching have you managed to fulfill all of your makeup wishes yet? - I think I have. I don't have any "cravings" or "lemmings" for anything in particular, but if you list what you are pining away for, maybe I'll become inspired!

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane -
Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn -
world serves its own needs, regardless of your own needs. Feed it up a knock,
speed, grunt no, strength no. Ladder structure clatter with fear of height,
down height. Wire in a fire, represent the seven games in a government for
hire and a combat site. Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry with the furies
breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tethered
crop. Look at that low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population,
common group, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its
own needs, listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and the
reverent in the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright
light, feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign tower. Slash and burn,
return, listen to yourself churn. Lock him in uniform and book burning,
blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle,
light a motive. Step down, step down. Watch a heel crush, crush. Uh oh,
this means no fear - cavalier. Renegade and steer clear! A tournament,
a tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives
and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I tripped a nice continental drift divide. Mount St. Edelite.
Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Breshnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs.
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic,
slam, but neck, right? Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine...fine...

ipsy December Bag - Review, Pictures, Swatches

March was the last MyGlam bag I received. After washing my hands of the entire subscription service I thought I would never go back. I felt like I wasn't their target demographic. They seemed to be marketing to a younger audience and they also seemed to have some pretty crummy samples in their monthly bags.  A little while after I unsubscribed from MyGlam, the company changed its name to ipsy.  With that change came a whole new take on the beauty sample subscription service.  They seemed to listen to the feedback they were getting from members, they changed the quality of the bags and the contents as well. After hearing some really good feedback from YOU, the readers of this blog, I decided to take the plunge and re-subscribe to a ipsy bag for the monthly subscription of $10 per month.

Apparently I signed up just in time to receive the December ipsy bag.  I was really happy with the communication (which was always good, even when they were MyGlam) on when to expect my bag for delivery.  The bag showed up at my home on the 18th.  Of course I cut open the hot pink foil bubble mailer and reveal a small pewter colored satin makeup bag.  If you had read any of my previous reviews you will note that I complained about all the bags having some strange odor.  The solution given to me from MyGlam was to "let it air out" until the odor was gone. (not satisfied with that answer.) So you can now imagine the scene of me pulling the bag from the packaging material and sniffing it.  I think Mr. Sith thought I had finally lost it...but then again. I do strange things with packages I get all the time, so it probably didn't phase him at all. ANYWAY. Long story, short. The bag didn't smell bad!  Victory!

And there was even a little bit of clever marketing inside the bag!  ipsy has really stepped up their game.

Let's look at all that I received in this bag

Oooooh. All makeup or makeup related items!  That in and of itself is awesome.  I received a Lip gloss, eyeliner, eye shadow pigment, highlighter papers, and a face & eye primer!  In addition I get a $20 discount at justfab.com (They sell shoes, handbags and accessories) My hyper-citical feelings towards subscription sample bags was starting to wane a bit. I was actually....impressed!

Let's look at what came in the bag this month.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Zero.
I received a travel sized eye pencil from MyGlam in the past, but it was in a color I would never personally use.  This one is right up my alley. In fact, you really can't go wrong with a travel sized UD 24/7 eye pencil in Zero as far as I'm concerned.  I love them so much I made a meme for them. (yes really)

Plus when you visit the ipsy site and click on each item that comes  in your bag for the month, ipsy has worked it with the product companies to offer a discount or other GWP for making a purchase on the product company's site.  This month I can get "...a deluxe travel bag filled w/ luxury samples w/ a $25 purchase from urbandecay.com." when I use the code provided to me.  Not bad at all.

Ingredients: cyclopentasiloxane*, c11-12 isoparaffin, paraffin, polybutene, buxus chinensis, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, ceresin, cera microcristallina (microcrystalline wax), tocopherol, ascorbyl palmitate, phenoxyethanol

Next in the bag

Mai Couture Highlighter Papier
I have reviewed Mai Couture Papiers a long time ago on the blog Beauty Debutante.  You can read my review there.  These "papiers" are perfect little travel companions to boost your look on the go.  The highlighter paper is new to me as I had only tested the oil blotting sheets, blush sheet and bronzer sheets.

This paraben and talc-free highlighter sheet can be applied anywhere on the face or body for a nice SUBTLE shimmer. I really love the overall look of them.  The swatch is almost an entire sheet in one small area. I did this to show you the color and shimmer but when applied CORRECTLY the result is very classy and no disco ball effect at all!  LOVE these!

As with all items in my ipsy bag. I can "receive 20% off any purchase from maicouture.com" using a special code that ipsy provides.

Ingredients: nadelholz bleached kraft pulp, hemp pulp, mica, iron oxides

 On to the primer.

Mirabella Prime for Face and Eyes
I have never heard of or used this brand before. It seems like a decent primer but I cannot test it because it contains the dreaded "cyclopentasiloxane*" that makes me break out in horrific cystic acne.

I can't fault ipsy for that, it's not a common allergy and there is no way they would know that.

I like the idea of a primer that works for face and eyes, saves a step, but alas, this is going into my sample giveaway bag for someone else to enjoy.  Even though I can't use the primer, ipsy has provided me with a code for "...30% off any purchase from mirabellabeauty.com" which is pretty decent as most discounts are usually 10 to 20%.

ingredients: cyclopentasiloxane*, dimethicone crosspolymer, dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone crosspolymer, phenoxyethanol, dimethiconol, ethylene brassylate, silica, tocopheryl (vitamin e) acetate

The next item is lip gloss.

Be A Bombshell Lip Gloss in Hot Mess
Not the product name that I would have picked to inspire confidence in wearing red lip gloss, but hey, I don't work in marketing, so maybe they know something I don't.  Either way, it's a really pretty red and perfect for n00b red lip wearers and those that are old skool too!  It goes on sheer but can be layered for a more opaque look. The gloss it self is really nice texture and I'm sure to get some compliments on it this holiday season.

Be a Bombshell Cosmetics is an interesting company. They actually sell product individually but they also can send you personalized cosmetic kits each month or however often you like by filling out an on line profile.  You are never obligated to purchase the looks they make put together for you. You  can purchase 2 products a month for $19.95, 3 products for $29.95, 4 products for $39.95, or 5 products for $49.95. Al products are sold individually as well.. For example the full sized lip gloss I received in the ipsy bag retails for $14.  Of course I also got a special code to get "...30% off any purchase at beabombshellcosmetics.com" Which is pretty cool!

Ingredients: polybutene, ethylhexyl palmitate, paraffinum liquidum, squalane, silica, methylparaben, propylparaben. may contain: mica and titanium dioxide (ci 77889i), iron oxides (ci 77491, ci 77492, ci 77499), maganese violet (ci 77742, d&c red no. 6 ba lake (ci 15850), d&c red no. 27 ai lake (ci 45410), fd&c yellow no. 5 ai lake (ci 19140), fd&c blue no. 1ai lake (ci 42090)

Last but not least

NYX Loose Pearl Shadow in #05 Charcoal Pearl
These tiny vials of pigment pack a pigmented punch!  NYX has always been a good quality brand at nice prices so you are never going t hear me complain about receiving loose pigment from them. Even if I received a color that I would never put on my eyes I could mix it in with some clear nail polish and make my own custom color.  It's a win win!

Plus at only $3 oer container I could purchase all 30 color choices and spend less than $100...and of course ipsy has provided me with a code to save "...30% off any loose Pearl shadow at nyxcosmetics.com." so that's an extra savings right there. The all the pigments with the discount would cost less than a Chantecaille palette for 4 eyeshadows!  Of course I'm comparing apples to oranges here, but you get the idea.

Ingredients: mica, aluminium starch octenylsuccinate, phenoxyethanol, methylparaben, n-butylparaben, ethylparaben, and isobutylparaben. may contain: titanium dioxide (ci 77891), manganese violet (ci 77742), chromium oxide green (ci 77288), fd&c yellow no.5 al. lake (ci 19140:1), fd&c blue no.1 al. lake (ci 42090:2), ultramarine blue (ci 77007) , carimina (ci 75470), iron oxide black (ci 77499), iron oxide red (ci 77491), or iron oxide yellow (ci 77492)

Overall I'm really thrilled with my first ipsy bag!  They got everything in the bag right for me. No flimsy made in China makeup brushes, no stinky bags, no bizarre colored eye pencils.  Just exactly what I would pick out if I had the chance to fill my own bag from those brands.

There is no referral program that I know of for ipsy, so all links are referral free in this post.  You can get started by taking their beauty quiz and then sign up for your monthly bag if you want. Of course I'm still doing the "three strikes and you're out" rule for ipsy, so I am not recommending them outright, but I will say that this bag far exceeded my expectations and was well worth the $10 investment.

What say you?  Will ipsy be your next beauty sample subscription service?

*Strangely enough the cyclopentasiloxane in the UD pencils has never made my eyelids react the way my face does when I use it in a primer, foundation or moisturizer.
