NARS Satin Lipstick in Tolède - Review, Pictures, Swatches

NARS Tolede Lipstick

When I saw that NARS was coming out with a sweet Pink rose lipstick that looked more like a pinky nude color for their summer collection, I was excited and hesitant all at the same time.  You see, pinky-nudes turn absolutely orange on me, and not in a good way. Pinky-nudes look pretty in the tube, but once applied to my skin, my cool undertones, or warm undertones, or something clashes with the color, and I'm left with an orangey brown turd on my lips! (Now THERE'S and image for ya!). Anyhow. I still wanted to try it. I mean, I am a sucker for pinky nude lips, right after Red lips....so I figured it couldn't hurt...right?

RIGHT! The NARS Tolède lipstick showed up in the mail, and I immediately photographed it and swatched it on my arm.  Now most times pinky-nudes look orangey on my arms, so when this one didn't turn that orange brown color I was very excited to try it on my lips.

I applied the lipstick to me lips and lo and behold, it didn't turn into an orangey-brown mess!  WIN!  The lipstick itself had a decent slip to it. It certainly wasn't the most moisturizing lipstick I have ever worn, but it wasn't the most drying either. The lipstick itself wore nicely, didn't bleed or crumble. It lasted well through my morning cuppa and biscuits but did need re-applying to freshen it up. It felt light on the lips, not waxy or greasy, and it had strong pigmentation for a nice opaque lip in one stroke.

Where had this color been all my life?  Why was I made to suffer for years, nay, decades with orangey-brown lips when THIS pinky-nude actually looked NICE ON ME! Then it hit me.  This color is NEW. It's never been released before, so that's why I had to suffer all those years.  I had to suffer so I could finally appreciate a true pinky-nude lipstick.

That sound's dumb right?  But maybe the Makeup Gods have that in their divine plan, along with the plan to make me suffer by having my skin look amazing and breakout free AFTER photo opportunities, plans to make my eyes water and erase my makeup on days when all I'm wearing is black liquid liner and a wash of taupe shadow, and plans to make me burn in the sunlight and never actually tan, remaining this pasty white blob that most self tanners look terrible on.  Yes. I think the Makeup Gods are cruel. Why else would they create the most perfect taupe in the universe (Shu Uemura ME Silver 945) and then discontinue it?  Right?

Well I decided that if I can acquire a Shu Uemura ME Silver 945 and a pinky-nude lipstick like NARS Tolède that doesn't turn into an orangey brown mess, then I can achieve anything!  I can find a foundation shade that expertly matches my neck while not making my face look like a ghost! I can find a primer that keeps oil at bay and  doesn't break me out or cost a fortune. I can find a fool proof liquid liner that comes in a variety of colors and lasts all day long. I can find ....wait a second. I have all of those things already. I have a fabulous foundation, a great primer and liquid liner.  Maybe the Makeup Gods aren't so cruel after all. Maybe I just need to try more things and have patience.

HA! Patience.  That's rich! I have no patience for anything. But at least I don't have to wait for the perfect pinky-nude lipstick because NARS Tolède is it and I adore it!

Do you NEED this? Well NARS Tolède lipstick is described as a Pink-Rose color, but I found it more of a My Lips But Better (MLBB) shade and in the nude spectrum. I suggest trying it before purchasing it or looking at several different swatches on line before purchasing it.  The lipstick retails for $26 USD and can be found at NARScosmetics.com. Hopefully soon it can be found at your local Sephora or Nordstrom or other retailer that carries NARS cosmetics.

  1. Hmm.. very odd. It looks orangey on my screen, not a hint of pink. BUT, it looks good on your lips so I'll take your word for it. ;) Mayhap I need to calibrate my monitor.

    1. I see what you mean. It does not look very pink at all. I wonder wth is up with my settings. It's more pink in real life than the photos show, but not as orangey as Dolce Vita

  3. Yeah, I wouldn't call it pink rose. I don't know what I'd call it, actually... I think it looks lovely though! :-)

    1. I agree. I'm not sure what happened, but it does look more pink in real life than it does in the pics. :-(

  5. I don't know what I'd call that color either (maybe apricot-rose, from your pic?) but I love it! I normally hate NARS lipsticks but I might need to check this one out. It looks so SHINY on you - is that just the lipstick without any gloss or balm on top? If so, can you tell how the formula compares to Chantecaille Lip Chic, Guerlain RA, and other shiny/glossy lipstick formulas? Thanks!!

    1. It does look very shiny. I was not wearing any gloss or balm on top of this, but I think the flash probably makes it look glossier than it really is. I would say that the NARS lipstick formula is not as moisturizing as Chante Lip Chics or Guerlain RA at all. Plus the shine wears off but the color stays unlike the Lip chics which have the shine and color wear off at the same time.

  6. Nice and glossy too! I finally ordered Dolce Vita with the NY set.

  7. I have this but it looks a lot pinker on me than it does in your pics, weird. It looks good on me, though, and it's my first NARS lipstick--unfortunately I don't know if I'll be buying more, because I find it drying on my lips, and I try to wear moisturizing lip products as my lips are always dry. The NARS looks great but gets really uncomfortable, so it's a bummer. I may try wearing balm underneath next time and see if that helps.

  9. I recently got it too and I think it's dupe for Rimmel's Kate Moss matte lipsticks in shade in 104.
