Thursday Poll

Thursday Poll

I am so emotionally drained from this week I don't even know what to write about for the Thursday Poll. I started the week with a scare that my 9 year old Bulldog, Floydiepie was going to die. He was particularly ill and was rushed to the Vet. the prognosis was not good and extremely expensive. We decided that since we spent almost 5K on his 2 years ago for a surgery to save his life, and the fact that he is near the end of his life expectancy, and because we just don't have that kind of money any more, that we would take the path of least resistance and give him meds and make him comfortable. He seems to have done a 180 and is back to his old normal self after a few days on antibiotics! (So a great result but a roller coaster all the same)  Then at work I had 3 major meetings which can be emotionally draining. One with a VP that just does NOT want to sign a document that would give an employee a break on a financial issue that the company owes him. His arguments to not approve the document are circular and not based on facts or solid reason. It's frustrating because he is the VP and you can't convince him to change his mind.  I had a guest post on my blog this week that caused quite an uproar among some readers. I appreciate their point of view and the comments they left.  However, a couple of people went too far and started to get nasty. It's sad that people have to bully like that. You can disagree and state your opinion without getting personal and calling the writer mean names. Then I found out that an ex-employee that recently quit to work for another company died.  The worst part was that he was a major alcoholic and was refusing help of any kind. He died in a traffic accident. He was a real jerk to me on a regular basis, but I would never wish that sort of disease on anyone nor the way he died. It's just so sad. Thankfully no one else was hurt, but his estranged family is left to pick up the pieces.  Then this morning Darthypie was complaining of symptoms of Strep Throat but had a complete meltdown when they tried to swab his throat at the doctors, and they couldn't do the strep test. So basically they are taking a wait & see approach. Either way, he is home sick today, which means Mr. Sith will get no work done taking care of him. Getting no work done means making no money and making no money is bad...always bad. This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day AND Star Wars Day. At least I have THAT to look forward to.  What's Star Wars Day? It's May 4th. As in May The Forth or May The Force Be With You. Get it?  Yeah. It's dorky, but fun.  Mr. Sith will be at a comic book store with some other 501st members, all dressed up as characters from the Star Wars universe.  It should be fun.  But still I'm spent, so forgive me for the lack of effort on the Thursday poll today.

1. Lip Of The Day? - Revlon Color Burst Lip Butter in Sugar Plum. I have yet to post about these, but I'm still on the fence as to if these are worth it. I purchased it thinking they would be sheer, but they are not at all. Still a nice color, but I'm not sure about the formula.

2.  What kind of things do you do to relax yourself when you are stressed out? - Eat....sadly. But I also try to play mindless games on my iPad and do a facial mask too.  Gets my mind off of things for a little while.  Writing also helps. ^

3.  When was the last time you went "Virtual Beauty Shopping" and what was in your cart before you closed out the website without purchasing? - I was on the RoseRoseShop where I get all my Korean makeup, and I had a bunch of skincare stuff in my virtual cart. But I thought better of it and closed out the window.

4.  If you have ever had a first pet, what kind of pet was/is it. What was it's name and how long did it live (if deceased) or How old is it now? If you have never had a pet, would you consider getting one some day? - My first pet was a cat. He was all black and weighed a lot, but he wasn't fat, he was just huge!  He was a bad ass and a great hunter.  His name, Cat. Yup. Really. And I believe he died at 13 or so, but prematurely because he had cancer or something. Of course,  my parents lied and told me he just died in his sleep, rather than letting me know the had to put him down.

5.  Finish this sentence: If I had my own Makeup Line, I would_____. - I would have a very broad range of foundation colors for the very pale to the very dark. And I would have a range of formuals for the dry to oily and sheer to heavy. I'm sick of seeing brands that do not cater to women of color. I know why brands don't do this, but It's my fantasy and in my fantasy anything goes!

  1. 1. Lip Of The Day? - Heeey, what a coincidence, I am wearing a Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter too. The new Wild Watermelon shade. Looks sooooooo good.

    2. What kind of things do you do to relax yourself when you are stressed out? - Eat chocolates. Vent to my boyfriend. Shop.

    3. When was the last time you went "Virtual Beauty Shopping" and what was in your cart before you closed out the website without purchasing? - I was on the verge of buying a whole lot of Sephora stuff. Thanks for reminding me, now I feel the urge to go back and buy all those things after all, lol.

    4. If you have ever had a first pet, what kind of pet was/is it. What was it's name and how long did it live (if deceased) or How old is it now? If you have never had a pet, would you consider getting one some day? - I had a miniature bunny, named Pingu. He disappeared from his cage one day :-( He was maybe a year old.

    5. Finish this sentence: If I had my own Makeup Line, I would_____. - I would focus a lot on eyeshadow probably :-)

  2. You are a strong woman. My week was not as hard as yours, but draining nonetheless. I hear you! Hugs

  3. So glad your dog is doing better! I was worried!

    1. Lip Of The Day? - I'm very boring today. I am wearing just a lip balm. Badger Lavender and Orange.

    2. What kind of things do you do to relax yourself when you are stressed out? - Well, after I had the honor of angering a couple of your readers earlier this week ;), I relaxed with a good micro beer out on my back porch in the sunshine. I'm not one to let nastiness get me down, not when I can use it as an excuse to enjoy a good beer! One of my other stress fixes is to go for a run. Running always clears my head of negative thoughts.

    3. When was the last time you went "Virtual Beauty Shopping" and what was in your cart before you closed out the website without purchasing? - a couple of days ago, I backed out of buying a bunch of BB creams that I have not yet tried on YesStyle. I decided it was just too much money. Although I might still go back and buy them!

    4. If you have ever had a first pet, what kind of pet was/is it. What was it's name and how long did it live (if deceased) or How old is it now? My first cat, a Siamese, was Cio-Cio. I was 3 years old or so when we got her and she lived to 21 or 22.

    5. Finish this sentence: If I had my own Makeup Line, I would_____. - I would formulate a full range of pressed mineral foundation without bismuth. There are some of those out there (Jane Iredale in particular), but they are not that common. Bismuth irritates the skin for some people (including me) and I tend to think it also looks too shiny in most formulations. But I love pressed mineral foundation so I am always seeking out ones without it.

  4. awwwww I'm glad he 180'd! woooo!

    1. Lip Of The Day? - Nothing, currently. But I'm thinking MAC Ablaze may be in order

    2. What kind of things do you do to relax yourself when you are stressed out? - ugh I eat too. Or I read, which is a better idea. Sometimes I get a bath if the kids are gone or deep asleep, if not the bath is just not relaxing lol

    3. When was the last time you went "Virtual Beauty Shopping" and what was in your cart before you closed out the website without purchasing? - I have a crap ton of Bobbi Brown sitting in the NM website cart. So long, in fact, NM sent me a 10% off your shopping cart email to come back LMAO and I plan to ;)

    4. If you have ever had a first pet, what kind of pet was/is it. What was it's name and how long did it live (if deceased) or How old is it now? If you have never had a pet, would you consider getting one some day? - My first pet was a turtle named Myrtle. Because it rhymed, not because I got it at the beach or anything cool like that. It jumped off a rock and broke it's neck in his tank. No one ever believes me. I miss that thing.

    5. Finish this sentence: If I had my own Makeup Line, I would_____. - I would have a wide range of shades for the face that will never discontinue, like ridiculous amounts. And a HUGE variety of amazing matte shades so buttery people would salivate. Yep. Like food, only better.

  5. It has been one of those weeks, I am so sorry. I know what that feels like. As for the lip butters, I love them! But the formula isn't consistent across the board. I think you'd really like Pink Truffle though! Not a "spring!" shade but excellent year round.

    1. Lip Of The Day? - I'm working on an orange lip post so I'm playing around with a bunch!

    2. What kind of things do you do to relax yourself when you are stressed out? - Definitely a stress eater! I also love to drink tea/coffee, play on my phone, watch horrible trashy tv, & painting my nails because it forces me to be still. Blogging too of course!

    3. When was the last time you went "Virtual Beauty Shopping" and what was in your cart before you closed out the website without purchasing? - I wanted one thing from Forever 21 & then added mindless stuff to my cart..then said WTF am I buying stuff I don't care about for?

    4. If you have ever had a first pet, what kind of pet was/is it. What was it's name and how long did it live (if deceased) or How old is it now? If you have never had a pet, would you consider getting one some day? - My first pet I really remember was named Kramer. A rescue (like all my pets now too) he was half lab half chow. He was the only dog I've ever had that liked being a dog. He was super protective of me so when I lived on my own he was just the best. I had him for 12 years which is so long for a big dog. It was horrible losing him.

    5. Finish this sentence: If I had my own Makeup Line, I would_____. - I love the idea of loads of shades as well because I have a hard time finding a match. I would also create items I consider must haves like setting sprays & a wide range of nail polishes...because it is me.

  6. 1. Lip Of The Day? - eh, none

    2. What kind of things do you do to relax yourself when you are stressed out? - Doing makeup. Or a sophrology session, or a workout DVD (I"m into stretching at the moment)

    3. When was the last time you went "Virtual Beauty Shopping" and what was in your cart before you closed out the website without purchasing? - I rarely do that actually, I either buy or I don't lol

    4. If you have ever had a first pet, what kind of pet was/is it. What was it's name and how long did it live (if deceased) or How old is it now? If you have never had a pet, would you consider getting one some day? - No pet. My grandma had cats but we never had pets at home and so I'm not used to have them around. Also I don't want a pet to be left alone all day while I work.

    5. Finish this sentence: If I had my own Makeup Line, I would_____. - I definitely not compromise on formulas, and I would have very pale and dark bases as well.

  7. lip of the day? last hour of overnight shift, so none.

virtual shopping? perfume, because I cant afford the perfumes I really want.i dream, and dream.

my first pet was my little tiny chihuahua, peewee, who was named after peewee herman. he was my heart and soul. he passed away 7 years ago and he was 16. i have chihuahuas now, and i adore them, but i never will have the same connection i had with the little king.

if i had my own makeup line i would do just mascara. when lancome discontinued aquacils i was devastated. i am now on my last tube of the major hoarding i did when they ended it. i still think about writing them a letter and screaming at them. it was sheer perfection for those of us with long, heavy lashes that need to be curled ALL DAY. that mascara was the HG of all mascaras. i would do ten different mascaras that would address all kinds of issues women have with their eyelashes.

feel better, elvira. it will get better, and have fun this weekend!! go 501s!

  8. Elvira,I am sorry you've had such a week. I hope it gets better and Darthypie, too. and for the record I welcomed the latest posts and the guest post, too. It is not alarmist to be bringing up these questions. One thing that makes your blog unique is the fact that you bring up topics that most beauty blogs wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, and you do so thoughtfully, and with humor. It affirms the independent voice of your blog, IMHO, and loyal readers can tell you are not beholden to the cosmetics industry, even if they might provide a banner ad or an occasional product sample. You do this because you care about consumers like us and because you want to. More power to you and your blog for this!

    1. Lip Of The Day? - no makeup on yet but probably will be Estee Lauder Rose Envy love it this spring- a sheer red that is very flattering and easy to wear type red. tiny GWP sample but I like so much, I may purchase the full sized one.

    2. What kind of things do you do to relax yourself when you are stressed out? - FB, paint nails, call mom, look at beauty blogs, bath, glass of wine, text a friend, pet the cat, hug my kids, you name it. We need a big arsenal of tools because battling stress is like waging a war, and the same strategies will not work every time.

    3. When was the last time you went "Virtual Beauty Shopping" and what was in your cart before you closed out the website without purchasing? - Nail polish, butterLondons and OPI. I also stalk all cosmetics wholesale and Becca and Urban Decay shadows were in my cart as well as a discontinued Revlon Colorburst lipstick.

    4. If you have ever had a first pet, what kind of pet was/is it. What was it's name and how long did it live (if deceased) or How old is it now? If you have never had a pet, would you consider getting one some day? - I begged my mom for a cat for years and she finally gave in. A grey tabby named SMokey Jo. She was alive when I moved away to college but I guess died and my parents didn't tell me when or how. I was too self absorbed at that point to do much asking.

    5. Finish this sentence: If I had my own Makeup Line, I would____
focus on color. Specifically nail colors, lipstick, eyeshadow. My line would evoke vintage glam and the way makeup was used in the 1930s and '40's to affirm one's identity, independence and femininity. Inspired by a line from a classic Barbara Stanwyck film, in which she and a gaggle of girlfriends have spent the night being questioned by tough cops, she is unflappable as she answers the cops then turns to her girls and asks, "Now, who's got a lipstick?" as if that is way more important than the murder case the cops are focused on.

I'm sending good vibes and hoping your week turns around.

  9. Wow. Sorry about all of the difficulties you are having right now. Seems to me that things like that always come in waves. Some people say things come in 3s, but sometimes it is more than that. So, "waves" is good enough for me.
As a funny asside...when I began reading I thought you said your bullFROG was ill and you spent thousands of dollars on him. I thought "why the hell would she spend that much on a frog" and then I figured it out. Pups are worth it (mostly), but I understand the difficulties of dishing out large bucks for aging dogs. One of my puppies is in the same boat. Now that she is so old, she must forego certain treatments that she might have received as a younger dog (e.g., removing cysts, dental visits, etc.) I expect that if she gets seriously ill, that will be her end. Hopefully we will have at least a couple more good years with her.
Anyway, I'm glad Floydiepie is better. Hope the rest of your week is better for you too.

BTW, that conversation about cosmetic ingredient reminded me of an expression by BIL came up with (in response to how "Natural" ingredients are better. Ready for it?...

    "Shark bites are natural."

    He, he... Anyway...

    1. Lip of the day: Chapstick (original flavor) - it doesn't contain any of those good ingredients people tend to like, such as shea butter or bees wax (that I'm allergic to and make my lips blow up 3X normal size).

    2. Things to relax: read your blog and other makeup blogs. Obsess over makeup. Read paranormal urban romances (or watch them on the TV/movies). Blog about resilient living.

    3. Virtual beauty shopping, not purchasing: Funny. I almost purchased the new Chanel metamorphose quad. I had it added to my bag and everything. Then, when I went to check out the system wouldn't work properly. So, I deleted it from my bag. I have been thinking about that quad for a while, but I just can't make up my mind. Now,on the 2nd day after pay day, I feel too broke to get it.

    4. If I had my own makeup line, I would make sure that it didn't contain any ingredients to which I am allergic, especially fragrances. Also, I want a foundation that covers my wrinkled face but that doesn't emphasize my wrinkles and large pores. Also, I can't find anything that looks pale enough. I agree with you about foundation for women with darker skin too.

    1. OOps, apparently I missed the question about the first pet. Man, it is difficult to actually remember which of the many dogs we had was the first one. The earliest pet that I can remember was a dalmation named "Tito" after President Tito of the Republic of Kiribati. My mother picked the name, so I'm not sure why he was named that. Tito turned out to be too big and exuberant for us little kids, so he we sent to live at a farm, where he could run around and such. Since then, my family had many dogs. I had numerous fish, gerbils, a guinea pig, various parakeets, canaries and finches. I even had a small parrot and a parrotlet for a while. For now, I am down to two dogs Lucy and Coco Chanel).

  10. Totally understand your post!!! My boss just got ''fired'' they say organizational structure change but whatever, and now I do not know what they will do with me argh!
As for the dog i think it is great and I hate when my son is sick too, the worse when his sick he doesn't want to take medication that taste like candy!! but when his ok, he beg for the medication... WTF???
    1. Lip of the day: MAC Strong Woman
    2. Things to relax: Run, making joke of the situation and drink (wine and beer mostly)
    3. When was the last time you went "Virtual Beauty Shopping" and what was in your cart before you closed out the website without purchasing? last night I really want the parfum Cuir de Lancome and I'm looking all over the web to find the cheapest one not a small task, i'm canadian and a lot of vendor are not shipping to Canada :(

    4. If you have ever had a first pet, what kind of pet was/is it. I always had a cat and a dog at my parents house and at 4 years old my parents had a little farm, with goats, chicken, rabbits and then Cows, turkeys etc so I do not remember all their names
    5. Finish this sentence: If I had my own Makeup Line, I would___ make the best foundation ever who will just make disappear all the acne and redness, and I would have the sickest eyeshadows ever with amazing packaging,

  11. (((((Pink Sith)))))) I hope you have an AWESOME weekend. You totally deserve it!! (my son would go NUTS to see the 501st!)

    1. Lip Of the day--The Honest Company lipbalm in lavender mint
    2. Relax--watch House marathons, listen to music, watch a favorite movie, read, and the old favorite--sleep!
    3. I think I was browsing some nail polish and closed the window, whew. Unfortunately medical bills are eating into my beauty budget!!
    4. I had 2 dogs, Cinnamon & Ginger. Ginger passed away too soon due to an accident. Cinnamon lived to a ripe old age for a peekapoo (pekinese/poodle mix). I've had cats, dogs, birds, a turtle, rabbit, guinea pig, goats, a pig, and even pet spiders (they were my science fair project). Now I have my dog Willow and a fish called Solo (because he's the only one left lol).
    5. If I had my own Makeup line, I would have an indie polish line--3 or more "free" type. That *may* be a reality (hopefully sooner rather than later!)

  12. 1. I've been into Mybelline Baby Lips in Peppermint this week...

    2. At the risk of coming across as condescending, I don't have the luxury of being stressed. I'm not saying there aren't things in my life that don't contribute to stress, because there are, but I focus my efforts on finding a solution to a problem. I'm a single parent to a child with ASD, so that alone *should* be enough to cause stress, but at the same time, there are constantly issues we face, so we take care of them, and move on. There are things in life that we can change, so we should focus on those. At the same time, there will be situations that are what they are, so why dwell on them? I also don't let petty things get to me; there is *always* a solution to the small things.

    3. I find myself hitting the NARS site once a month, or so, and I put all the items I want in the cart, just to gauge the cost & to prioritize what I *really* want. Then, I do a handwritten list I keep with me, listed in order of what I want to buy most.

    4. When I was about 3-4, I began "adopting" the feral cats in the neighborhood, and even named them all. My family fed them, and many of them actually would let me pet them. When I was 9, we were walking home from the corner store, and came upon an orange tabby we didn't recognize. She looked healthy & well-fed, like she was someone's pet, but she had no collar/tags. After I bent down to pet her, she decided to follow us home. We figured she had a home, so we tried to discourage her. We decided to keep her, put up posters, etc., but noone claimed her. A week or so later, we realized she was pregnant... As near as we could figure, someone just dropped her off from another area (we asked several people if they knew anything about her, noone did) because they didn't want to deal with the issue of kittens... Needless to say, she became our pet, and we named her Annie (yes, as in "Little Orphan Annie") because of her color, and how we came to get her. She had a habit of following us, and one day she followed my mom across a street, saw a dog, stopped, and a car came and hit her.

    5. I would have products that gave the option of using a palette system, and actually provide the palette for FREE! One thing I hate is having to pay $20 for an empty palette, so I just stay away from those brands, unless the regular packaging is sturdy, like MUFE, although I'd buy more if I didn't have pay for an empty palette!

  13. I'm sorry to hear that all of that happened to you and your family. I hope things get better, soon. :(

    1. Lip Of The Day? - Erp. It's Nivea's Lip Butter in Smooth Kiss. (But yesterday it was MAC's Lipglass in Magnetique! I wear lip products, I swear!)

    2. What kind of things do you do to relax yourself when you are stressed out? - I'm a stress-eater, too. I also like to listen to write (fiction, poetry, in my journal, whatever). And just closing my eyes and listening to music is always good.

    3. When was the last time you went "Virtual Beauty Shopping" and what was in your cart before you closed out the website without purchasing? - Urban Decay was having an awesome sale on their website, and the 27/7 Glide On Pencil Smoked set was on sale for like $10 off. But I had to remind myself that I had plenty of eyeliner and I did not purchase it. Sad day.

    4. If you have ever had a first pet, what kind of pet was/is it. What was it's name and how long did it live (if deceased) or How old is it now? My dog Mookie entered our family before I did. He was a Collie-Belgian Shepherd mix and he kind of looked like a wolf since he was huge (until you realized he was just a big teddy bear). We did everything together. My two-year-old self would sit in the hallway and feed him dog biscuits for no reason and share my lollipops with him. Yeah. I know. He died of cancer when he was 9 years old (I was 4 at the time) and it was a sad time for my whole family. He was basically one of my mother's children. We have a lot of really cute pictures together and I'm sad that dogs don't live as long as humans.

    5. Finish this sentence: If I had my own Makeup Line, I would_____. - I would have the best time making up names for all of my products. That sounds like the most fun job ever.
