Thursday Poll

Thursday Poll

Sonam Kapoor is an Indian model turned Bollywood Actress/L'Oreal India Spokes model.  She made headlines at The Cannes Film Festival when she showed up in an Anamika Khanna Couture ivory and gold lace Sari for The Great Gatsby premiere.

The buzz was not for wearing the sari as many of the Bollywood Actresses went with traditional looks for several premiers.  No,  it was for the nose ring she chose to wear.

Traditionally the nose ring is a cultural addition to the beauty of a woman in certain places in Asia.  But the nose ring Miss Kapoor chose was incredibly large and very bling-y.  (By Eastern standards) The Huffington Post in their "Best & Worst in Beauty" post slammed Miss Kapoor for the nose ring stating "While we understand that it is part of Kapoor's heritage to wear nose rings, the beads are way too distracting. We feel the ring should act as an accessory and not be the main event."  So first off. Those are not simply "beads" those are DIAMONDS! Big honking diamonds!  While I believe the WESTERN idea of beauty would agree the nose ring is a bit distracting, the actress is not always going for the Eastern ideal of beauty.  I found this statement by the Huffington Post rather offensive.  It is as if they were saying "Let us tell her how she should show her cultural heritage, you know, from an Anglo Saxon perspective that will not look 'too ethnic'."  Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Maybe I'm being hypersensitive. There are many fashion and entertainment blogs out there that agreed with The Huffington Post that the look was "too much".  I personally found it unique and stunning. I mean diamonds of that size on almost anything is stunning! Another actress by the name of Vidya Balan also wore a large nose ring while dressed in a sari on the red carpet in Cannes.

On the India Today website, they quote another prominent Indian fashion designer Ritu Beri (who became the first Indian designer to present a show in Paris, successfully launching her first luxe collection in 1998) as saying. "It definitely adds a fun edge to the look and where else are we going to going to bring this drama if not in Cannes".  The Indian Express blog explains,"Sonam's kundan nathni [nose ring] from her mother's jewellery collection caught everyone's attention.  Sonam tweeted: "I felt like a princess!" (Reuters)". That right there was all I needed.  She "felt like a princess". Isn't that what any woman wants to feel like when on the red carpet at Cannes?  I think so.  Also, Cannes is where you go a bit over the top. Just like at the Met Gala, High Couture fashion is expected if not mandated. I understand where she was going with this look. She wanted to make a statement.  Plus in Hollywood, and probably Bollywood, ANY press is good press. Heck, it even got ME talking about fashion, and I'm someone that hasn't worn a designer label in close to 15 years!
On To the Poll!

1.  Blush If The Day? - Chanel Joues Contraste in Rose Dust. It's a cool day...not temperature wise, but clothing wise, so that means cool toned blush to go with the outfit.

2.  Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring?  What about her outfit(s)? - The nose ring, while large, makes a statement and I do like statement jewelry. The Sari, pretty, but I'm not a fan of lace anything. She also wore a Dolce and Gabanna dress.

LOVE the print, LOVE the fabric, Love the fit, Hate the tea length. It makes her look too juvenile.

3.  What is one of your favorite a makeup dupes? (A high end makeup item that you can find a duplicate (close/exact color match, texture, etc) of in the drugstore.) - I like that Milani Luminous blush is a dupe for NARS Orgasm blush.

4.  Do you have any piercings? - No. I used to have 2 piercings in each ear, but I let them close up. I wanted a tongue piercing and an eyebrow piercing, but I'm glad I didn't get one after all because I just don't thin that look is for me anymore .

5.  Anything you are obsessing over right now? - I'm obsessing over finding dupes for high end makeup for a blog post I am planning to write. Note I am using you as inspiration in the question above. hee hee!

  1. 1. Blush If The Day? - Smashbox Halo Longwear Blush in In Bloom

    2. Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring? What about her outfit(s)? - Not a fan of either, I am afraid :-(

    3. What is one of your favorite a makeup dupes? (A high end makeup item that you can find a duplicate (close/exact color match, texture, etc) of in the drugstore.) - There's a Catrice concealer that works almost as good as YSL's Touche Eclat.

    4. Do you have any piercings? - I used to have a belly button piercing, but I took that out when I was 18 or 19. Now I only have three tragus piercings, and three holes in my ear.

    5. Anything you are obsessing over right now? - Deciding what book I am going to read next! I am in the 10th book of the Sookie Stackhouse series now, so I am almost through the whole series, nooooooo...

  2. 1. Blush If The Day? - Kevyn Aucoin cream blush in Liquifuchsia, love it!

    2. Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring? What about her outfit(s)? - my only thought is that we should let everyone wear what the hell they want to wear even if it's hideous by our own standards: it's their right to wear it. On a personal level I think it suits her.

    3. What is one of your favorite a makeup dupes? mmh, I probably have some Inglot shadows that dupe other brands (mac, burberry maybe) and I love Inglot so that would be my pick

    4. Do you have any piercings? - One in each ear. Got a second one done at 24 but those kept getting infected so I gave them up after 2 years.

    5. Anything you are obsessing over right now? - kind of obsessing about finding the perfect signature look that I could always fall back on - but I'm probably too fickle for that

  3. 1) Blush: None right now! My skin is having a reaction to the new skin care I've been testing, so I have red patches on my cheeks. Natural blush?

2)I got my nose pierced during a quarter life crisis that I had in February. My parents scrunched their nose at it, and my friends thought it was very out of character. However, I can't wait for it to fully heal so I can rock a fat ring in it. So I say, bravo Miss Kapoor.

    3) MUG for MAC eyeshadows.

    4) Nose, ears, and my lip back in college. That lasted about a week before my dance team coach made me take it out.

5)Tarte Aqualillies gel liner in Splash!

  4. 1. Blush If The Day? - Illamasqua's Lover. I'm super pale and didn't have much time to blend today. Lover is my go-to when I lack blending time, because I could not blend it at all and it would look good. Not great, but good. A minute buffing around a little, and it's great.

    2. Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring? What about her outfit(s)? - Well. As a feminist (I know, I know) who strives for truly intersectional choice feminism, not only should people be allowed to wear anything they want, but people should be a hell of a lot more sensitive to cultural differences, and not judge everyone by western beauty standards. Add to that that the nose ring was obviously a statement piece, and an heirloom, and I think the HuffPo piece was ridiculous. They're good at being ridiculous, though.
    3. What is one of your favorite a makeup dupes?
Madd Style Cosmetics - Rebel Lollipop blush. It's a loose-powder NARS Orgasm dupe, 2.5 grams for $7.50.
Madd Style Cosmetics - Effin' Perfektion Finishing Powder. It's a loose powder dupe for overpriced 'finishing powders' that are little more than talc or silica, like MUFE's HD Powder, Tarte's finishing powder, etc. Finishing powder without made-up ingredients to justify the price.
NYX in general - They make more high quality products that turn out to be dupes than I could ever list.

    4. Do you have any piercings? - Left and right ears are stretched out to six gauge, but can hold smaller gauges, including regular earrings. I used to have both eyebrows, four more in the left ear and three in the right, double monroe piercings, a lip ring, and nipple piercings. I got older and that shit just became too much work to keep up.

    5. Anything you are obsessing over right now? - scents in general, mostly indie perfumeries as I can afford those. Indie nail polish companies for certain things. Still hunting for the perfect shade of foundation to match my skintone D:

  5. 1. blush of the day: Bourjois Lilas d'or
    2. Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring? What about her outfit(s)? Not big on jewelry, I like understated things, the only piercing I loved when I was a teenager but never did on myself with the lips ring. So i'm down with the cultural thing just not my thing .... love her sari !
    3. What is one of your favorite a makeup dupes? Pupa multipurpose eyeliner vs MAC pearlglide, same formula! mind you PuPa eyeliner are not cheaper per say (maybe a couple a bucks less) but they are not limited edition and have a great selection of color!
    4. Do you have any piercings? ears only and that enough one of my coworker almost die because an infection after a piercings
    5. Anything you are obsessing over right now?find a bold good looking necklace in turquoise to go with a coral dress for my brother wedding.

  6. 1. Blush If The Day? - Sephora Collection bronzer in Los Cabos. Not so much a blush, but I'm more of a bronzer gal.

    2. Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring? What about her outfit(s)? - I love the nose ring and I love the outfit. I'm a huge Bollywood fan and follow that stuff more than American celeb gossip and the fashion is always WAY cooler than anything I've seen at the Met Gala

    3. What is one of your favorite a makeup dupes? (A high end makeup item that you can find a duplicate (close/exact color match, texture, etc) of in the drugstore.) - Color Whisper shade in Coral Ambition being a dupe for Betty Bright from MAC's Archie Girls. Maybe not exact, but pretty damn close.

    4. Do you have any piercings? - Not one. Never have and probably won't but have always wanted TONS!

    5. Anything you are obsessing over right now? - Like you, I'm obsessing over dupes. I found that NYX's Tropical is a dupe for Sigma's Grasp (Papaya from the Resort Collection) and I'm desperate to find it. It is such a unique color! Also neon nail polish.

  7. 1. Blush If The Day? - Wet n Wild MegaGlo in Catwalk Pink

    2. Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring? What about her outfit(s)? - Hate the dress, love the sari! And the nose ring--I've never seen the diamonds arranged like that before, so I don't HATE it, I think I'm just not sold on it. HuffPo must be having a slow week to make a big deal out of a nose ring.

    3. What is one of your favorite a makeup dupes? (A high end makeup item that you can find a duplicate (close/exact color match, texture, etc) of in the drugstore.) - Probably any of the DS version's of the Clinique Chubby lip-thing.

    4. Do you have any piercings? - Five! :D Two in each ear and one in my nose--I'm Indian, too, so I pierced my nose as soon as I could, haha! I'm also planning to do my cartilage for my 23rd.

    5. Anything you are obsessing over right now? - Doctor Who, but that's been a given for some years now ;) Currently my obsession is haircuts! I'm growing my hair out to donate for a custom wig for someone I love, and since I'll be chopping my hair short for the first time in my life, I'm OBSESSED with hair magazines and looking up a trillion short haircuts!

    1. There's a website called Taaz where you can upload a pic of yourself and "try" different celebrity hairstyles they have on there. I used it a lot deciding what I wanted when I got my hair cut short :)

    2. oh, I forgot about that website! :D that's a great idea, thank you!!

  8. I have no style opinion on the nose rings per se, but if you look at both pictures, Ritu Beri's in particular, you will see that the ring is pulling on the nose. Just as wearing earrings that are too heavy will eventually enlarge your earlobe and hole, wearing nose rings like this will cause similar damage to the nose and nostril. That is my only concern should this become a "trend." That said - I am disappointed that Huff Post would even comment on this.

  9. Sorry... while I do believe people should wear what makes them happy I have to admit that nose rings this large look like boogers to me. But maybe diamond boogers aren't so bad :-P

  10. I love the dress. But the nose ring? A big no no for me I am sorry but it just takes away from her beauty

  11. 1. Blush If The Day? - Nothing! Argh! :(

    2. Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring? What about her outfit(s)? - I'm not one who criticizes about what celebrities wear on the red carpet. Hey, whatever makes them happy. That being said, when I read it, I did think the Huffington Post article is pretty culturally insensitive, rude, even.

    3. What is one of your favorite a makeup dupes? (A high end makeup item that you can find a duplicate (close/exact color match, texture, etc) of in the drugstore.) - I'm completely at loss for this one. Whenever I need a dupe for anything I just send a small sample to Susan from Darling Girl and she'd make a custom shade for me. Hmm, perhaps the L'Oreal Shine Caresse as a YSL Glossy Stain dupe?

    4. Do you have any piercings? - I have 13 on my ears, and 3 on my face. I used to have even more.

    5. Anything you are obsessing over right now? - The Militant Baker blog. I have a major girl crush on the blogger now. :P

  12. 1. Blush If The Day?
None today - it's been busy!

    2. Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring? What about her outfit(s)?
Her nose ring is fabulous! And the diamonds are gorgeous. It seems to be from her mother's collection - heirloom jewelry is cool! I don't understand the comments from The Huffington Post - why can't the nose ring be the main event? In any case, I don't think it was - she looks fabulous! I love the sari, but am not crazy about the matching coverup.

I agree with you on the length of the D&G dress - otherwise lovely on her!

    3. What is one of your favorite makeup dupes?
I don't have one, unfortunately. I'd love a dupe for YSL Golden Glosses though.

    4. Do you have any piercings?
    Nope.

    5. Anything you are obsessing over right now?
    Work, ugh.

  13. totally agree upon your stance of the Anglosaxon standard and the fear of being too 'Other' (good, I'm feeling Edward Said again and his stance on orientalism). The nose-decoration is a perfect addition to their beauty and dresses and I wish I had the type of nose that would need some extra attention than it already has by it's grandeur...

    OK, anwers :)
    1. Blush If The Day? Probably my Vichy again in Rose Stretch. It's an oldie but still that perfect rose. I am trying to master the "high-on-face-close-to-ears blush look I see models sporting and I think it looks not so flattering in peaches but with these colours it looks somewhat Juliette Binoche in Chocolat, after she met Johnny Depp, ofcourse)

    2. Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring? See above

    3. What is one of your favorite a makeup dupes? I've lost the connection with the Dupe idea, but I like the Lovelace I had lately...hehe, knowing you hate everything lace. It's not an exact dupe but it's mineral blush.

    4. Do you have any piercings? - the ear ones and I have been piercing the top of my ear at the Ramblas in Barcelona when I was 20...gosh, the hygiene factor? But some of my Spanish student friends did too and I love this memory of it.

    5. Anything you are obsessing over right now? - Balenciaga

    ReplyDelete
  14. 1. Blush Of The Day? - Tarte Dollface

    2. Your thoughts on Miss Kapoor's nose ring? What about her outfit(s)? - She can wear whatever she wants--but I think she likes good even if she looks odd.

    3. What is one of your favorite a makeup dupes? (A high end makeup item that you can find a duplicate (close/exact color match, texture, etc) of in the drugstore.) - Hmmm...Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick Blushing Nude looks quite close to the color of NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dolce Vita.

    4. Do you have any piercings? - Just one in each ear--thinking of getting more but testing for metal allergies first.

    5. Anything you are obsessing over right now? I'm obsessing over putting together an excellent workhorse beauty collection for hair, body, skincare and makeup. Right now, trying to narrow down on pencil liner, mascara, setting powder and bronzer.

  15. My favorite make-up dupe is my beloved, Holy Grail lipliner -- Wet 'n Wild #666 (Brandywine). I've used it (and really only it) for about 23 years, and probably will until I die. It's supposed to be an almost exact dupe for MAC Spice, but I haven't verified that personally. It's a sort of dusky raisin shades that I can make work with almost any lipstick or gloss I wear.

  16. I respect the cultures of India regarding the nose ring but for me I don't want to put earrings on my nose or any part of my face except in my ears. It feels heavy on my face I think. But the gown is absolutely fascinating.
