Kiehl's Skin Rescuer - Review

Kiehls Stress Reducer on

Stress. We all have it. We all experience it from time to time. Or all the time, depending on your life. Stress takes its toll on our physical health, or minds and our skin. While Kiehl's does not have a lotion to ease stress in our daily lives, it does have a moisturizer that will ease stress the skin on your face goes through. Call it therapy in a bottle, the Kiehl's Skin Rescuer is a treatment or moisturizer (depending on your skin type) that is able to visibly reduce the signs of stress on the skin. This includes skin fatigue, de-hydration, blotchiness and redness.

When I say that it can be used as a treatment or moisturizer, I mean that the Kiehl's Skin Rescuer can be used under your regular moisturizer to counteract skin fatigue, redness, etc. and then apply your regular moisturizer to do whatever magic it is supposed to do. This is especially effective if you are also using your moisturizer for other anti-aging benefits, or if you have dry skin. OR If you have oily skin, like me, you can use the Kiehl's Skin Rescuer on its own as a treatment and moisturizer. It won't make you overly oily as it contains Squalane (the natural oils that our skin produces on its own). If you have sensitive skin whether it is oily or dry, you will find the Kiehl's Skin Rescuer to be an added benefit to your skin care routine as it contains ingredients to help visibly reduce irritation and redness.

My skin is stressed. Aside from my regular every day stress and I have a lot of me... the skin on my face is super stressed because I am constantly trying new products. Whether they be skin care or makeup, my skin reacts to almost everything I put on it. On days when my skin was "angry" I found that the Kiehl's Skin Rescuer was the only thing that calmed it down.

Imagine my skin is Bruce Banner from The Incredible Hulk TV show. Bruce isn't always in his Hulk form. A lot of times he's trying to get along in life until some diphthong messes with him. Bruce tries to be calm. He tries to warn the diphthong not to make him angry because the diphthong wouldn't like it when he gets angry...but does the diphthong listen? Of course not. The diphthong is a bully, a jerk, a criminal, or some other irritant. So the inevitable happens and mild mannered, super scientist Bruce Banner turns into a giant green monster with huge muscles and looks vaguely like Lou Ferrigno.

Now imagine that my skin is like Bruce Banner.
The diphthong is any sort of skincare treatment I use that irritates my skin, like something with too many "essential oils" or exfoliating chemicals.
The Hulk would be my skin AFTER using the irritant, but instead of green and muscle-y, it's red and puffy. I may or may not still resemble Lou Ferrigno.

The antidote to calm the hulk down was time. Bruce banner needed to wait for The Hulk to chill, and he turned back into Bruce. But Bruce was searching for the antidote to keep his Hulk-ness under control. MY antidote is the Kiehl's Skin Rescuer.

First it calms my skin with chamomile and hydrates it with glycerin, shea butter and squalane (a botanical lipid derived from olives). Then it treats the redness and inflammation with rosa gallica extract. And lastly, it protects the skin barrier from future stress reactions with a blend of ceramides and mannose which is a barrier protecting sugar. Mannose reinforces the moisture barrier in the facial skin to help prevent water loss. The more hydrated skin is the plumper and more radiant it is.

So in a nutshell. Whenever I start to turn into The Hulk, the Kiehl's Skin Rescuer stops that from happening. And with continued use, I have had very little, to no Hulk-like episodes with my skin.

Do you need this? YES, if you have stressed out skin. If it's looking dull, dehydrated, red or irritated, a couple of pumps of the Kiehl's Skin Rescuer under your moisturizer or sunscreen will have you looking like you just got a good night's sleep and finished meditating. I found this didn't clog my pores, did not cause break outs and it completely eliminated inflammation and redness in my skin due to environmental stress. The pump bottle is sanitary, and the lotion feels light and non greasy.

Now it's time to play that sad walking away music from The Incredible Hulk. Why? Because this post is over and also because I am almost out of this excellent product. Yes. I used up the entire bottle!

You can purchase a 2.5 fl oz pump bottle of the Kiehl's Skin Rescuer for $40 USD at the following retailers: Kiehl's Boutiques,, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue.

  1. This was the only thing that really helped me a couple months ago. I came back from a vacation from Hawaii and my skin around my mouth became inflamed, itchy and flaky. Nothing worked until I purchased this. I still use it now when it acts up again.

  2. Very interesting product, I like the ingredient list... Especially the glycerin and squalane! I've already confessed my sensitive skin woes to you, and right now La Roche Posay's Toleriane line and TriDerma's Facial Redness Repair lotion are my answers to "angry" skin days (so well put, Elvira!). But the TriDerma lotion stings at first when I put it on, adding insult to injury; while it does work to calm my skin down, I've never liked that initial burning sensation. This Kiehl's product will definitely be my next attempt at calming down my skin!

  3. I am stunned this is $40 US and only $48 AU, usually the price jump is WAY bigger!

  4. I wish I wish to the stars above that this will work on me. Thanks for the review! xoxo,

  5. It's starting to get cold here and my usually combination skin suddenly got very dry and flaky on one cheek and began to break out at the same time. It was impossible to properly cover up that flakiness, and the constant pimples that kept popping up were an additional annoyance. My face overall felt dry and crinkly (the area around my eyes as well). When I smiled the area with the flakiness would crinkle visibly.

I ended up picking up the Skin Rescuer - I used it that night and no flakiness the next day! After that I've just been using it as a regular moisturizer in the morning and now the dry skin feeling is all gone. My skin doesn't feel at all oily yet either (which is usually the problem when my combination skin starts to act up), even though the consistency itself is quite thick.

It hasn't worked miracles on my acne, but it seems to have calmed down my skin a lot in general, which is making the pimples easier to deal with.

(In addition it also seems to be a great primer before putting on a thin layer of liquid MAC foundation. I've never managed to make foundation go on this flawlessly before!)
