Ben Nye Final Seal Matte Sealer - Review, Pictures

Ben Nye Final Seal Matte Sealer Review on PinkSith.com

I have oily skin.
I think this has been established many times on this blog
In the summer and hot/humid weather my makeup might last for about 2 hours (tops) if I'm lucky. After that, I end up looking like Toht from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Not pretty.
Then I discovered Ben Nye Final Seal Matte Sealer.
*cue heavenly light and choir of angels singing*

Yes. Ben Nye Final Seal has been a saving grace for me. When applied over completed makeup, I get a smudge and water resistant finish. It keeps my makeup in place even when I perspire.  I put the Ben Nye Final Seal to the test when I went to DragonCon in Atlanta over Labor Day weekend. Atlanta in August with thousands of other hot sweaty people all crowded around in hot and heavy costumes = Makeup Meltdown.
Mr. Sith in his Shadow Trooper costume giving a "low five" to a kid watching the parade

The Annual Parade was held on one of the hottest and most humid days over the Labor Day weekend. I stood there shoulder to shoulder with the unwashed masses waiting to see Mr. Sith and the rest of the 501st march in the parade. Unfortunately, I was on the wrong side of the street to get a decent picture of him, but hey, my makeup looked awesome!

My Glitter Trooper costume

Cosplay can be hot and sweaty. The helmets for both of my costumes alone were enough to cause my makeup to melt and drip...thankfully I had a helmet fan
for both helmets. (built by Mr. Sith - he sells them BTW *shameless plug*) But it was still hot in those darn things. Now I know what you are thinking. Why would you need to wear makeup if you are wearing a helmet? You don't. You shouldn't. But a) I'm a freak and can't leave my house without wearing makeup and b) I knew I was going to take that helmet off at some point and well, I wanted to look pretty when I did. Plus, c) I'm a beauty blogger. When I meet people and tell them I'm a beauty blogger and I'm not wearing makeup or my makeup looks like crap, I have no credibility. So there!  Even with the helmet fan, and the humidity, my makeup stayed in place thanks to the Ben Nye Final Seal. I was thrilled!

My HK Mando costume

I'm psychic and I know what you are thinking again.  But Elvira, what about that Urban Decay All Nighter Spray you raved about? Sure Urban Decay All Nighter is good, but Ben Nye Final Seal is GREAT! (all caps equals I REALLY like it)

1) UD All Nighter is expensive. It's about $7.25 per oz. Ben Nye is about $2.19 per oz. UD comes in a 4 oz spray bottle and a 1oz spray bottle. Ben Nye comes in a 1 oz spray bottle, a 2 oz spray bottle, an 8 oz refill bottle, and a 16 oz refill jug!
2) The ingredients for both products contain alcohol, but only Ben Nye contains Acrylates/ Octylacrlamide Copolymer. This is the stuff that "fixes" the makeup to your face. UD does not have that. In fact, it contains so many preservatives and fragrances that there isn't much room for a fixative at all.

Ingredients:
Ben Nye Final Seal - Alcohol Denat, Water, Acrylates/ Octylacrlamide Copolymer, Triethanolamine, Propylene Glycol, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Blue 1.

Urban Decay All Nighter - Water, SD-Alcohol 39-C, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Isononyl Isononanoate Ethylhexyl Isononanoate, Sodium Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate PVP, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Methyl Diisopropyl Propionamide, Dimethicone PEG-7 Phosphate, PPG-3 Benzyl Ether Myristate, Gluconolactone, Sodium Benzoate, Glycereth-5 Lactate, Methyl Methacrylate Cross Polymer, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Fragrance.

Now no product is ever perfect.  there are two minor "cons" for the Ben Nye Final Seal.  It has a strong minty fragrance. Even though it evaporates as quickly as it dries on your skin some might find it a tad too strong.  I don't. The other con is the sprayer. It does not give as fine of a mist as the UD sprayer. It's not a bad sprayer, but the mist is a touch finer with the UD. It's a quick fix, I just refill my UD bottle with the Ben Nye Final Seal! HA!

Again I hear you asking, "How do you use it?". And Again I answer you.  Once I'm finished applying my makeup, but BEFORE I apply my mascara, (That's the last step in my makeup routine...even my finishing powder goes on before my mascara) I spritz on 3 sprays of Ben Nye Final Seal on my face. I hold the bottle about 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 centimeters) from my face, close my eyes and spray the left side of my face, the center of my face, and the right side of my face. Pro Tip: Try not to open your eyes right away because you may experience some stinging when the mist is still in the air and can get in your eyes. (Speaking from experience) I then apply my mascara, and I'm on my way. What I get is hours of shine free, non makeup melting, fading, running, disappearing, bliss! Best yet, when I wash my face at night the Ben Nye Final Seal rinses off easily and I have never experienced a breakout as a result of using this spray!

Do you NEED this? Do you have oily skin, or are going to be in a hot, humid, or sweaty environment or situation and need your makeup to look like you just applied it? Then YES! Think of it. Weddings, Hot days, Stressful situations like public speaking, all those factors can cause major makeup meltdown.  Ben Nye Final Seal prevents that.  PLUS It's INEXPENSIVE!!  I can't think of any reason NOT to buy it. I purchased my Ben Nye Final Seal from Camera Ready Cosmetics. I found their shipping to be fast, and their prices are very reasonable. However, you can find Ben Nye Final Seal from a bevy of other retailers or at your local theatrical makeup supply store.

What say you? Interested? Used it? What was your experience?

  2. This review makes me want to run out and buy this! I've reached the point with my oily skin where I can't wear liquid or cream foundations at all. I've been making do with just my MAC Mineralize Skin Finish, which doesn't always give me the coverage I want. Maybe this is the solution I've been looking for?

  4. Well! Sounds like this could be a lifesaver for me too! My biggest skin woe is that it is so freakin' oily.

  5. Oh, this stuff sounds like the miracle I've been waiting for! My makeup turns to sludge so fast, even using silicon base ones.

  8. Honestly? The idea of this scares me (the thought--"But what if I can't EVER get it off?" was silly but totally occurred). ^_^ My skin doesn't react well to long-lasting makeup. But definitely want to give this a try.

  9. I've had really oily skin since age 12 and I'm the mom of teens now! I need coverage so my life has been full of constant "washing up" and reapplying. I'm buying this for sure! Thank you! :)

  11. Just an FYI- this is what the Disney Princesses use to set their makeup. As you can imagine Orlando in summer plus tons of princess makeup makes the need for something that does not move very high.

  12. I definitely need this. I really don't wear foundation just pressed powder or nothing. Does it work with powder or to keep the shine off of bare face?
