Black Eyeliner

A friend of mine posed the question:

How many black eyeliners does one really "need"?

Being that she is a makeup junkie, like myself, she has like minded friends and they justified owning a ton of black eyeliners because of the type (Pencil, Liquid, Gel, etc.) and Finish (Matte, Shiny, Shimmery, etc.)  I like these people!

I believe that one can own multiple types of liners. One liner is not going to do the job for different looks.  Black liner is the most basic and necessary of all the liners. A building block, if you will.

The first eyeliner I ever purchased was a black liner. It was actually one of those red Maybelline brow and eye pencils in black, but I loved the red casing of the pencil and it was the 80's everyone wore black liner...even the guys.

I used pencil liners forever, but quickly found that I was skilled enough in liquid liners to use those on a daily basis.  My current favorite liquid liner (I use it almost every day) is the Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Liner.  It's a deep black color with a micro fine brush. It's perfection.

I never got the hang of gel liners. I think my eyelids are too saggy to keep the brush from dragging and making me look like a clown. But I admire other people's handy work when it comes to gel liners. I still have a MAC Blacktrack gel liner from years ago. I keep it stored upside down and tightly sealed. So far it hasn't dried out or turned.

I did have a brief love affair with cake liners at one time. My most favorite being the Chanel La Linge de Chanel in Nior Lame.  I love the deep black and ease of application, but then I had a kid and time was precious so mixing a liquid with the cake liner took up too much time. Sacrifices had to be made.  I sill have that liner, and I use it on special occasions.

So if anyone questions how many [insert makeup item here] is too many?  Just point them in a makeup addict's direction. We're here to justify your purchases as well as your collection!

Do you have a favorite black liner?  Let me know in the comments section.

  1. I have liked gel liners though it is kind of hard to apply with an angled brush but lately I purchased the Maybeline "master precise" eyeliner and it seems like a winner!

  2. I love MAC's fluidline as well as elf $1 liquid liner. I'm sure you probably tried this but I find gel liner to be easy to apply when you use an angled brush. My brush I use is a paint brush from Michael's

  3. my go to would be stila's stay all day liquid eyeliner. it has great pigmentation, stays put in humidity and the felt brush is easy to control. i have a love/hate relationship with benefit's they're real push up liner. i love the pigmentation and ease of creating the right flick for my wing but the formula is dry and will randomly flake at times. i'm also fond of urban decay's velvet glide on. it's hard to believe but it stays put even better than the original 24/7 formula on me!

  4. My fave black liners are MAC, Maybelline, and essence's gel liners. All are so pigmented, long wearing, and easy to use. For pencils, I love UD's Perversion, MAC Smolder, and Prestige's Deepest Black. :)

  6. Pencil: UD Perversion; gel: Tarte Amazonian Clay; powder : whatever black eye shadow is in my kit/no favorite. I haven't used a liquid liner in ages. Not the easiest type to use when you're raising kids. I'll have to get acquainted with some of the great new liquid liners recommend in your and other blogs.

  7. Surprisingly, I don't wear black eyeliner all that often unless I'm using liquid liner. I think the only pencil liner I own is a sample from Buxom that I rarely use and Maybelline's new kohl liner. I'm fair skinned and have hooded eyes, so I tend to think it overwhelms my eye if I'm not careful. I like MAC Blacktrack for gel and L'oreal Lineur Intense for liquid liner. Chanel Mirifique makes a nice sparkly black liner if I want the look. I'm more apt to go for a brown or navy than a black, I suppose.

  8. lol :-) Well... I probably have at least six or seven black eyeliners. A couple of pencils, two felt-tip pens, one liquid liner and some gel liners. All black. Because, you know, black is awesome.

  9. Not that surprising. I was actually expecting a few people to say this. While black eyeliner is a staple for most, people like you and me (fair skinned, small eyes) should really use more browns and navys anyway. You're doing it right! I tend to be hardheaded and not listen to good advice.

  10. Liquid liner is all muscle memory for me now. But I totally understand how it's a pain to use when you don't have a lot of time to get ready, :-D

  11. I have been on the fence with buying the Benefit liner. I tested it in store and it was dry and flaky, but I thought that the tester was just old or dried out. I'm thinking maybe I don't need it after all.

  17. yeah you really don't if you have any other gel liners you like. it just happened to be the first I've tried in a long line of any that doesn't smudge on me.

  19. You could give it a try if you are looking for a thin eyeliner, I didn't expect it to be that good!

  20. I have a gel, a marker, a liquid and 2 pencils. All black! It somehow polishes up any look for me! Glad I'm not alone in hoarding these :)

  21. The only way I can do a decent job with gel is using Bobbi Brown's ultra fine eyeliner brush. Don't ask me why the tapered dome tip works the best for me. I thought either a slanted tip with tiny brush hairs or a flat angled tip brush would work better. I tried both after irreparably damaging the Bobbi Brown one and eventually had to buy another one from Bobbi.

  22. My favorite black liner is Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen, it is the blackest black you can find. I love the dual-ended tip. One side has a long fine brush and the other has the tiniest felt tip for precise lining. No other formula needed. Enough said :)
