OSEA Malibu Skincare Blemish Balm - Review

OSEA-Skincare-Blemish-Balm-Review-on-PinkSith

The loverly people at OSEA Malibu sent me their Blemish Balm for testing and review.  First of all I should tell you about the company before I get into the product.  OSEA Malibu was originally created as a spa line of body and skin care products.  According to their website, "Our company philosophy is built into the name – OSEA stands for Ocean, Sun, Earth, and Atmosphere. We respect the four elements of our planet and work with nature to heal the human body. We don’t do anything that pollutes or harms our planet because that is where we find our most effective ingredients." All their products are Vegan Certified by vegan.org, organic and biodegradable. Not too shabby.  OSEA Malibu moved into the at home skin care market because of customer demand and they wanted to introduce their vegan and organic skincare using a proprietary base of three seaweeds to the at home consumer.

Kelp

I was sent a product called OSEA Malibu Blemish Balm.  Unlike many of the Blemish Balms you may be familiar with this product is NOT an all in one makeup/skincare/sunscreen. It is essentially an un-tinted, mattifying moisturizer that is supposed to reduce inflammation, regulate oil (sebum) production, and heal the skin.

Let me cut to the chase.  Did this product actually work? Sort-of.

What I liked:
  1. The Gigartina Skottsbergii Extract - Red Alge Extract, Macrocystis Pyrifera Extract - Giant Kelp Extract, and Undaria Pinnatifida Extract - Wakame (Seaweed) Extract, felt really nice on my skin and my skin never felt dehydrated or overly oily.
  2. My skin was left with a matte finish, but never felt tight or dry.
  3. The lotion absorbed quickly and never pilled up under foundation or powder.
  4. The glass bottle and pump dispenser are nice and sanitary and don't allow the antioxidant properties of the Copper Ferment, Manganese Ferment and Zinc Ferment to break down as fast.  These 3 antioxidants are the extract of yeast fermented in the presence of copper, manganese and zinc ions.
  5. The Price.  While $42 is a little high for a moisturizer, you do get a generous 2 fl oz. (Other moisturizers are usually 1 oz or 1.5 oz)

Red Algae

 What I didn't like:
  1. The Scent.  The overpowering scent of Lavender, Thyme, Cypress, Juniper, and Rosemary oils was just too much, even for me.  Those with sensitive noses will not be able to use this product at all. It takes a LONG time for the scent to fade as well.
  2. The Lavender oil broke me out in tiny little whiteheads. A blemish balm should not break you out. I discovered that I am sensitive to Lavender oil after using this product and another product from another company with similar results.  Doing some research I discovered that Lavender Oil is not the best ingredient for skin care. While it has antiseptic properties the Cosmetic Ingredient Directory cites, "...other components of lavender, specifically linalool, can be cytotoxic, meaning that topical application causes skin-cell death (Source: Cell Proliferation, June 2004, pages 221–229). Lavender leaves contain camphor, which is known as a skin irritant. Because the fragrance constituents in lavender oil oxidize when exposed to air, lavender oil pro-oxidant. This enhanced oxidation also increases its irritancy on skin (Source: Contact Dermatitis, September 2008, pages 143–150). Lavender oil is the most potent form, and even small amounts of it (0.25% or less) can be problematic. It is a must to avoid in skin-care products, but is fine used as an aromatherapy agent for inhalation or relaxation (Source: Psychiatry Research, February 2007, pages 89–96; and www.naturaldatabase.com)."  So as you can see it's NO BUENO for your skin!

Lavender

So aside from the Lavender oil this is a ....Oh I can't. I can't say this is a good product b/c of the Lavender oil. I just cannot recommend using it on your skin after doing research and reading all those articles.

HOWEVER...

I noticed a few other skincare items from OSEA Malibu that look really good. They contain the proprietary seaweed extracts and NO lavender oils so it's a win/win!
They are:
Plus there are a variety of OSEA Malibu body care items that look interesting as well.

OSEA-Skincare-Blemish-Balm-Review-on-PinkSith
Wakame Seaweed

Do you NEED this?  No. After doing research on Lavender oil I cannot in good conscious recommend it for anything to do with the skin on your face and am less hesitant to recommend it for body care items, however I do like it for aromatherapy. That, combined with the overwhelming fragrance of the product, I do not recommend the OSEA Malibu Blemish Balm. I DO recommend checking out other products from them because the promised results of mattification and the seaweed extracts were nice so at least they live up to their claims. The OSEA Malibu mission and philosophy are admirable and I'm happy to support companies with such responsible business practices.  My hope is that OSEA Malibu will read this article and make a decision to stop using Lavender oil in their skin care products.

What say you?  Ever had a reaction to Lavender oil?  What about the idea of using seaweed extracts and algae extracts on your skin? Let me know in the comments section.

Eight Favorite Fragrances for Spring

Eight-Favorite-Fragrances- for-Spring-on-PinkSith

Now that Pollen Season, er I mean Spring has arrived, I would like to share with you some of my favorite florals for springtime.  Of course I pretty much wear florals all years round, but these scents in particular get some heavy use come April through June.  Let's take a look!

Eight-Favorite-Fragrances- for-Spring-on-PinkSith

This was a fragrance line exclusive to Barney's New York, but now they are all on their own and you can shop with them directly through their website. Cereus No. 3 was a fragrance I purchased several years ago in Las Vegas. I was visiting the Barney's store on the Vegas Strip and found a myriad of fragrances I fell in love with.  The Cereus line stood out to me because I knew it would be something no one else where I lived was wearing, and it would be a scent that would remind me of my trip for years to come.  No. 3 really captures the essence of magnolia blossoms.  It has a hint of citrus and some peony and jasmine and it's grounded with musk. Every time I wear it, Mr. Sith compliments me on how good I smell. I wear fragrance for me, but to have others admire it, is nice too! Cereus No. 3 retails for $125 USD for a 1.7 fl oz bottle. It can be purchased on the Cereus website.

Eight-Favorite-Fragrances- for-Spring-on-PinkSith

A long time favorite of mine. I purchased this an found myself wearing it as my "signature scent" for almost a year or more.  The beautiful aquatic notes of Hyacinth and cucumber, combine with Citrus-y Mandarin and Yellow Primrose.  It's a bright and sparkling scent that is grounded by a Blond Woods note.  You can purchase Clinique Happy Heart pretty much anywhere Clinique is sold. The prices for this fragrance range for $38 USD to $63 USD.

Eight-Favorite-Fragrances- for-Spring-on-PinkSith

I wrote about the Caudalie Fleur de Vigne shower gel and I loved the fragrance so much I purchased the fragrance.  This is more of a green floral and very, very light. Ste scents of Grape Flowers, intermingle with Grapefruit, White Rose and Mandarin. There might be some notes of pink peppercorns in the dry down, but the fragrances is grounded by Cedar.  Caudalie Fleur de Vigne retails for $39 USD for a1.7 fl oz spray bottle. You can purchase it from Sephora, Beauty.com or Nordstrom.

Eight-Favorite-Fragrances- for-Spring-on-PinkSith

I received a sample of this fragrance and I went totally NUTS for it!  The Eau de Toilette is less cloying than the Eau de Parfum and I prefer it that way. Oh sweet delicate notes of Mandarin blossoms a non overpowering gardenia and rose make this scent light and bright. This is my new "signature scent" and my go with any mood fragrance. I purchased my fragrance at Nordstrom. a 1.6 fl oz bottle will set you back $78 USD.

Eight-Favorite-Fragrances- for-Spring-on-PinkSith

If you like fruity florals then this is the scent for you.  Passion Fruit mixes with Bergamot and Jasmine. Notes of Amber and Cedar ground this fragrance and keep it from smelling too sickly sweet. I like to wear this on the weekends for just running around and playing with Darthypie. He always tells me how good I smell when I wear this scent. Since he's still little, I'm going to cherish those compliments and save them in my memories for when he's a teenager and he "hates" me. You can purchase Philosophy Loveswept from Sephora, Nordstrom or ULTA. A 2 fl oz bottle retails for $46 USD.

Eight-Favorite-Fragrances- for-Spring-on-PinkSith

This is a stronger and headier scent that my not be a favorite of light floral lovers, but those that want a little Umph behind their rose scents will find Florabotanica the one for them.  I admit I wear this sparingly, bu I love it on a chilly rainy day in April the best. The Turkish Rose mixes with the mint and the Vetiver to make an intoxicating floral perfect for warming up your senses.  White Amber grounds this scent. You can purchase Balenciaga Florabotanica Eau de Parfum from Sephora or Nordstrom and a 1fl oz bottle retails for $70 USD.

Last but not Least!
Undecided on what spring scent will work for you  Why not try out one of the fragrance samplers from Ineke?  They cost $25 USD each and you get a $15 off coupon code to us on your purchase of a full size 75 ml bottle! Win-Win

Eight-Favorite-Fragrances- for-Spring-on-PinkSith

I reviewed Volume 2 but you will get a good idea of at least 5 of the scents in this collection. The volume 5 includes 8 spray samples!

Originally created for Anthropologie, Ineke gives you 5 of her Floral Curiosities sprays for you to choose from.

Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm - Review

Algenist-Complete-Eye-Renewal-Balm-Review-on-pinksith

Once upon a time lived a perfectly beautiful Princess, in an extraordinary castle located in a marvelous Kingdom. Everything about the princess's life was perfect. Well ALMOST everything. Her looks were stunning, her clothing was amazing, and her family was fantastic. However, the princess was always in a bad mood. She was usually miserable. She went to the wizard and asked him to cast a spell to keep her smiling all the time. She figured if she was smiling, she would be happy and perhaps her exceptional life would finally FEEL outstanding. The wizard did as he was instructed and cast a spell that put the widest and brightest smile on the princess's face.

And so it began...Day in and day out the princess smiled from ear to ear. The permanent rictus grin figured prominently at the dinner table, at jousting matches and royal functions. But the princess was not happy. Her life was not becoming extraordinary and people thought she was dim, because only a fool smiled as much as she did. What the princess didn't realize is that this constant smile caused her to develop fine lines around her eyes. Perhaps it was the stress of the constant grin or the stress form her subjects giving her sideways glances of horror...but either way she developed wrinkles!

She returned to the wizard for help. Through her toothy grin, she asked the wizard to remove the wrinkles. The wizard said he could, but she wouldn't smile anymore. Realizing there was no middle ground with this magic man, she opted not to break the spell. Her smile would eventually make her a happy person...she hoped. So the princess went back to her chamber and cried through her grin. She cried because her looks were fading.

The handmaid that assisted the princess heard her sobbing. She knew the perfect remedy. She produced from her pocket a small glass jar of Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm. The handmaid promised that this half ounce of eye cream would work wonders on the princess's fine lines, puffiness and dark circles. It contained a revolutionary microalgae-based ingredient called Alguronic Acid.

The handmaid explained that alguronic acid is an undetermined mix of polysaccharides produced by microalgae clogging filters in algae cultures. While it's not a technical name referring to a single polysaccharide, it is a mix of algae extracts claimed to have anti-aging benefits for the skin. When tested, alguronic acid showed significant results in several skin benefit and anti-aging parameters, both independently and compared to other well-known anti-aging ingredients. While alguronic acid is not naturally present in human skin, it is also not affected by skin enzymes and broken down by the skin. Conversely, the naturally produced hyaluronic acid, that is distributed throughout the body does break down from skin enzymes. Hyaluronic Acid has the ability to help skin retain moisture. It plays a major role in tissue structure and repair, as well. In the testing done, alguronic acid was found to inhibit production of hyaluronic-acid-degrading enzymes by up to 67%. That means, in layman's terms, alguronic acid helps the naturally produced hyaluronic acid in our skin last longer and not break down as easily. More moisture from hyaluronic acid means smoother skin and fewer wrinkles.

The handmaid went on to explain that in addition to alguronic acid that increases cell regeneration and elastin synthesis, the Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm contains Vitamin C to boost radiance, lighten the under eye area and reduce wrinkles, Caffeine to reduce puffiness around the eyes and Cucumber Extract to smooth, hydrate, and nourish the delicate skin around your eyes. It's pretty much a superhero among eye creams.

The princess took the Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm and started to use it every day and night for a fortnight (2 weeks for you yanks). She only needed a scant amount to apply and the 0.5 oz jar seemed to last forever. What she found actually made her permanent smile genuine. The skin around her eyes was smoother, had more elasticity and the dark circles were starting to brighten and lighten. After 4 weeks she noticed the skin around her eyes was lifted and her wrinkles had almost disappeared. "It's a miracle." exclaimed the princess. "No. It's Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm.", chided her handmaid. And they both laughed and laughed and then the handmaid was beheaded for talking back to a royal.

The princess asked for the smile spell to be broken because she realized that true happiness wasn't achieved by smiling alone. It's achieved by smooth under eye skin, a lifted and firmer eye area, lightened under eye circles and beheading handmaids that sass talked you. And she lived happily ever after.

The End.

The Algenist Complete Eye Renewal Balm retails for $65 USD.  I purchased mine from Sephora.com, but you can also find it at Nordstrom.com and QVC.com

I really do ADORE this product. I have seen a marked difference in the quality of the skin around my eyes. The only issues I have with this product is that a) It needs to contain sunscreen because most eye wrinkles are caused by sun damage and b) It needs to be packaged in an airless pump. The anti-aging ingredients will degrade over time because of exposure to the light and air when stored in a glass jar. The product would be more effective for a longer period if they changed the packaging. Not to mention it's just plain unsanitary to dip your fingers into a jar of product. (I use a new q-tip)

What say you? Is happiness smooth and wrinkle free under eyes and beheading handmaids? What about the eye cream. Would you spend that much for something that really works?

NARS Contour Blush in Olympia - Review, Pictures, Swatches

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

I am NOT the queen of contouring. While I have tried on a few occasions to talk about contouring, I don't feel like a master contour professional like some Makeup Artists and Bloggers are. I am, however, a regular, normal person that wishes for sculpted cheeks and a jaw line made of stone, just like everyone else.

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

In the past, I have had to use very light blushes to contour. Regular contour powders were too dark for my very fair skin. Alternatively many of my friends with dark skin had a problem finding contour powders that would even show up on their skin. Now, thanks to Francois Nars and NARS Cosmetics we both have a proper and beautiful solution to our contouring woes. The NARS Contour Blush!

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

The NARS Contour Blush comes in thee distinctive shades. Olympia (The lightest) which is an Ivory and rose combination. Paloma (The medium) which is a pink beige and deep rose combo, and finally, Gienah (The darkest) which is a honey and amber combination. Finally women of all colors have a suitable contouring powder that won't make us look like we smudged dirt on our faces, or gives us an ashy complexion. WIN!

As you know I usually look like THIS without any makeup on my face.

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

After about a pound of foundation and concealer, I am ready to add contour to bring out my non existent cheek hollows and thin down my too wide nose. I also follow the video from NARS on How to: NARS' Contour Blush. Once all that is done, I am left looking like this:

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

Not too bad huh? It's amazing what a little makeup can do for a woman's self-esteem. I say I actually feel like Gisele Bündchen after using my NARS Contour Blush in Olympia. That makes me one happy Sith!

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

The powder is firm and very fine. It does not have powder fallout and the pigmentation is generous but sheer. Application feels like silk and it blends amazingly well. No stripedy faces with this powder. The deeper shade really helps to enhance the definition to the face, and the lighter shade helps illuminate the high points on the face.

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

NARS recommends using their Contour Brush #21 in the hollows of the cheek and then use Blush Brush #20 for the lighter shade to be swept across the cheekbone towards the temple. I use the Sonia Kashuk Synthetic Pointed Foundation Brush #121 to contour and then I use the Sonia Kashuk, Kashuk Tools Synthetic Flat Foundation Brush #05 for the highlight. Whatever brush you use to apply , this a truly a fool proof contour powder and as long as you get the right color you should look like THIS:

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

Rather than THIS:

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

Do you NEED this? YES! IF and only IF you want to contour. The NARS Contour Blush really does make contouring VERY easy and almost foolproof! While the results may be subtle, it does make a marked difference in how you look.

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

As you can see the palette is larger than a blush compact so you do get more product. It retails for $42 USD and can be found at narscosmetics.com, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. Nordstrom is having a 10% discount right now so the retail for them is $37.80 USD.

Now if NARS would only make a FULL BODY Contour Powder. I could finally wear my Slave Leia Costume. As it stands now, I look like this in it:

NARS-Contour-Blush-in-Olympia-on-Pinksith

I NEED body contouring.

If you wish to see swatches of the Paloma and Gienah contour blushes check out Temptalia HERE and The Style & Beauty Doctor HERE.

What say you? Is this the straw that breaks the camel's back in your proverbial battle to decide on contouring or not? Do you currently contour and think this NARS Contour Blush might work better for you? Are you dark skinned or light skinned and haven't yet found the ideal contour powder? Do you think this might be "The One"? Let me know in the comments section.

Fragrance Flashback

Fragrance-Flashback-on-Pinksith

Because I have no original ideas and the best stuff on the Internet is stolen from someone else I decided to steal...be inspired by a question that my beauty blogger buddy, Louise from Get Lippie posted on FaceBook.

What fragrance(s) did you wear as a teenager?

I racked my brain and realized I was as fickle then, as I am now. I wore a lot of different fragrances.  Some I still remember how they smell and others I have completely forgotten.

Let's start with the one I first remember wearing:

Fragrance-Flashback-on-Pinksith

A powdery abomination introduced in 1974 and still being worn today. The main fragrance note is a Powdery Floral. Today I don't think I could even stand it but back then I felt VERY sophisticated as it was my first fragrance.  The advertisements...well they were just creepy

Fragrance-Flashback-on-Pinksith

AmIRight?  Yikes! That would NOT fly in today's advertising world!

Fragrance-Flashback-on-Pinksith

Oh the bottle is what sold me. It was the ultimate preppy fragrance.  The deep red glass square bottle was very unique to me and the scent?  Well let's just say that I DOUSED myself in it.  One of my first blog posts was about this fragrance and a story about a kid named Jose and pistachios.  You can read more HERE.  Created in 1978 this fragrance was Ralph Lauren's first fragrance for women. The feminine, floral bouquet had green top notes and dried down to a powdery base of wood and spices. The heart of this fragrance contained rose, carnation and violet. Rose was soon to become my favorite scent of all time.

Fragrance-Flashback-on-Pinksith

The opaque glass and metal bottle intrigued me, but the fact that my parents wouldn't purchase this fragrance for me made me want it even more. They probably didn't buy it because they knew I didn't need it or thought it was too expensive, but either way, I still remember wanting it so bad.  This scent was created in 1978, but I remember wanting to wear it much later than that. Maybe mind 1980's?   I have forgotten what it smells like but looking it up on the Internet it seems that it has all the makings of a scent I would have liked at that age.  According to fragrantica.com "Anais Anais is a ultra-feminine fresh, rich and romantic bouquet of flowers. Transparent orange blossom with heady hyacinth open the composition. The intensive floral heart blends sweet rose, delicate white lily and magical jasmine. The base is composed of comforting amber, warm sandalwood with a tender touch of mysterious incense."  Sounds perfect to me. I might sniff it today and be repulsed, but I might also just pick up a small vial for nostalgia.

Fragrance-Flashback-on-Pinksith

Another Cacharel fragrance. They were quite the powerhouse in the 70's and 80's.  Lou Lou was a very popular fragrance and one of the top selling perfumes of the 1980's.  Created in 1987 this fragrance had a dividing effect on people. You either loved it or hated it.  I thought I remember it being slightly powdery but floral as well. A rich scent that could be easily overwhelming.  The Tiare Flower at the heart of the perfume is what divided people. The Orris combined with vanilla and balsam that makes me remember the powder. Again, the bottle design was one of wonder. Opaque powder blue glass with a red spiked top. How exotic!

Fragrance-Flashback-on-Pinksith

Oh this was the HEIGHT of sophistication for me.  A "Real" perfume that you had to purchase in a department store.  Ysatis was a fragrance I loved for not only the bottle design which had sharp edges and reminded me of a modern take on Art Deco, but the the richness of it.  Marketed as the scent of Luxury, the mid 1980's was the perfect time for this fragrance. While it was created in 1984, I didn't discover it until 1988.  The top notes of citrus gave way to the heart of jasmine, rose and iris. The base of amber and vetiver and sandalwood made this a heady scent that I wouldn't even dare to wear today. My white floral and rose preference has ruined me for anything so bold now a days.  But this is a scent I have even dreamed about. Wearing it made me feel seductive and sophisticated.  I will HAVE TO find a small vial to keep on hand to sniff once in a while to transport me back to the 1980's asymmetrical hair cuts, pegged jeans and new wave music that was my foundation.

What about you?
What are some of the scents you remember wearing as a teen into your early 20's?  If you are a teen or in your early 20's what sort of fragrance are you currently enjoying? I would love to read your comments!
