Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil - Review

Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil on

You know me and Cleansing Oils. I'm cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs and cleansing oils.  I find them the most effective way to remove dirt, makeup and sunscreen from my face.  I always follow a cleansing oil with a regular foaming or non foaming cleanser to ensure all remaining traces of whatever. But the cleansing oil is the major player in my cleansing routine.  I have very oily and acne prone skin so when I heard about oil cleansers, at first I was worried my face would break out.  That was not the case. In fact, NOT using oil cleansers to remove makeup and sunscreen was one of the factors that lead to break outs.  As Dr. Murad explains in this video, the cleansing oil is safe for oily and dry skin as it does not strip the skin of much needed lipids for moisturization but also does not contribute to excessive oiliness or breakouts because ti does not penetrate the upper dermal layer of the skin. It's a win-win for all skin types!

Poor Sonny. Won't someone give him some Cocoa Puffs?

I was sent the new Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil for review and to be honest I was kind of excited to try it out. I have another brand of cleansing oil, that I adore, but you know me. I'm never satisfied with anything, and I always want to try new things.  The Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil showed up just as I was finishing my last bottle of my regular brand.

The cleansing oil is marketed toward those with dry skin needing extra moisture, but I found that it works just fine for those with oily skin.  The oil is thicker than what I am used to. It's thick like the Kose Softymo cleaning oil or the Shu Uemura Regular and Extra Rich cleansing oils.  Thinner oils like the Boscia Cleansing oil and Shu Uemura Fresh Cleansing oil are what I am used to.  It took me a little while to get used to the consistency and to figure out the appropriate amount to dispense for use.

Grape Seed Oil. One of the many oils that are in the Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil

Speaking of dispensing the Murad Renewing Cleansing oil. This was the only thing I didn't like about the product. Instead of the typical pump dispenser, which pretty much every cleansing oil I have ever used comes with, you have to pour it into your hand. At the top of the bottle, under nest the screw on cap there is a tiny hole where you squeeze out the oil. I didn't like that at all. It was kinda a pain. I like to use a pump to dispense because having to unscrew the cap, squeeze the oil out, then screw on the cap was kind of a pain in the neck.  Your result may vary.

Also The consistency was thicker than I'm used to. That's not a bad thing,  just feel I should mentioned that.  I still found the results to be similar to many other oils I have used in the past.  I massaged the oil into my skin. I saw it begin to break up my face and eye makeup. Then I added a little water to my face, watched the oil emulsify into a milky white consistency, massaged that in some more and then rinsed it all away.

The Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil:
  • Removed most of my waterproof mascara, but on sometimes, not all of it. I had to follow up with regular soap & water or eye makeup remover on some occasions
  • Removed most, if not all, of my face makeup
  • Emulsified easily with water
  • Rinsed off easily
  • Did not leave a film on my face
  • Did not leave my face feeling dry or tight.
Sweet Almond Oil. One of the Many oils that are in the Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil

Overall I would say this is a good cleansing oil to use, particularly if you have drier to combination skin.  I found this a bit too heavy for my personal tastes to use in the summer, so I think I'll save this for the winter when my skin needs a touch more moisturization.  I did not like the lack of a pump for the bottle, but the cost per ounce was on par with other cleansing oils I like and use.
Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil $5.30 per oz
DHC Deep Cleansing Oil $5.50 per oz
Tatcha Cleansing Oil $9.60 per oz
Boscia Cleansing Oil  $5.20 per oz
Do you NEED this?  If you wear sunscreen, or if your wear foundation, or if you are regularly outside and sweating and getting grime on your face, YES!  You need a cleansing oil.  Regular cleansers may not remove all that "stuff" that gets on your skin. Especially in the summer when your face is exposed to sunscreen (I hope) and sweat and grime, you really need to add an oil cleanser to your routine.  A noticeable difference is right around the corner when you use a cleansing oil.

The Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil retails for $32 USD for a 6 fl oz bottle.  You can purchase it from Sephora, and directly from the Murad website.

Mother's Day Beauty Gift Ideas

Mother's Day is right around the corner.  While I personally do nothing more than get a card for my mom and mother-in-law, I know many of you like to give gifts to your moms.  (Oh and by the way. I don't ask for gifts for Mother's Day either. A card is all I want...maybe a nap too!)

I have compiled a few suggestions that some moms may like.  OK. A few of these suggestions are Anti-Aging products.  I personally wouldn't take offense at getting a wrinkle cream as a gift, but some women might.  So if you think your mom is sensitive, perhaps stick with the products that don't point out that she has wrinkles!

Murad Intensive Resurfacing Peel Review

image from

The thought of RESURFACING my face kinda scares me.  The road outside my neighborhood is being resurfaced. It's not a pretty sight.  Of course my face is not made of asphalt, so there's that.  But I will say that as I get older, that youthful glow is getting hard and harder to achieve.  I'm not saying that I look like a dour old hag...far from it, but I find myself using more cosmetics to get that glowy look rather than relying on my natural skin tone for providing it.  You really don't have to be "Old" by definition to need a bit of brightening, in my opinion.  Smokers (You know who you are), Drinkers, and even those that show temperance but still go out into daily pollution and smoky nightclubs can suffer from dull skin from time to time.  That's why when I was offered a chance to try the Murad Intensive Resurfacing Peel I jumped at it.  I was all over it like hot tar on asphalt!

OK.  The Murad Intensive Resurfacing Peel promises to brighten and smooth the skin similar to a chemical peel.  They also claim that the effects are enhanced by the "gentle Bamboo Bead microdermabrasion". With this type of microdermabrasion dead skin cells and other debris are swept away and glycolic and salicylic acids stimulate new cell growth.  With added vitamin C the skin is left smooth and glowing after just one use.

What really happened when I used the Murad Intensive Resurfacing Peel:
My skin felt smooth even though I didn't scrub my skin.  AND My skin tone was evened out and I had a nice natural glow to my skin....after just one use.

WTF?  Products aren't supposed to actually work...are they?  I mean we read all sorts of claims by skincare and cosmetic manufacturers that promise the fountain of youth in a bottle and we never really get it.  Sure, we fool ourselves and look for minor, almost infinitesimal improvements to justify our purchase, but we know deep down inside none of this stuff works as well as the marketing on the box tells us....until now.

Murad does not make lofty claims. It simply promises smoother skin and brightened skin which can also be called youthful skin.  It makes not promises to rid your skin of deep wrinkles or diminish age spots. It's to the point and guess what...It works!

a) My skin was smoother. I used this peel once a week for 4 weeks.  At the end of each session my skin felt smoother and since I used the peel at night, I woke up with calm, even toned and bright skin.
b) Cumulative effects were evident after the 3rd my skin really did show an improvement in the overall texture and look even days after using the Murad Intensive Resurfacing Peel .
c) The gentle "Bamboo Bead Microdermabrasion" was just that. Gentle.  I experienced no redness, scratches, soreness, burning or any other adverse effects.

The only complaint I have is the delivery method of the product. The Murad Intensive Resurfacing Peel comes in a box with four small tubes. You are supposed to twist off the top of the tube and squeeze out the product to apply to your face.  I found that those gentle "Bamboo Beads" clogged up the tiny reservoir pretty fast, so I ended up taking the entire top off and shaking most of the product into my hand.  My only suggestion would be to change the delivery method of the product.  Perhaps in a packet so I know I was able to get all the product out. I know I left behind at least another full treatment in the bottom of those 4 tubes. Or better yet, since some people love gimmicks...put the product in a plunger type dispenser (You know, like a hypodermic) that always makes for fun science-y type feeling while you do your at home peel.  I digress.

The product itself was a gooey white opalescent mixture with random white beads dispersed in it.  The fluid spread evenly over mys skin and each tube had enough to cover my entire face and neck.  The peel stung only the teeniest amount when I used it. I left it on for 10 minutes and I would say any stinging was gone before I finished applying the entire product.  Please note, that I have sensitive skin.  Those that are not as sensitive probably won't feel any stinging.  Either way, wearing the peel for 10 minutes was easy as it didn't run or drip and actually dried on my face slightly.  I rinsed it off using a washcloth and tepid water. I followed up with a a mild toner and a very mild moisturizer free of alcohols and any other acids like AHA, BHA etc.

Do you NEED this?  YES if you want skin as smooth as a baby's tushy!  Seriously, if you want to smooth your skin, give it a boost from exposure to pollution or the evils of time.  NO if you expect major lines to disappear or to emerge looking 10 years younger.  That's what a Dermatologist is for.  The Murad Intensive Resurfacing Peel retails for $45, which comes to $11.25 per treatment.  That's not too bad for the results you achieve.  I plan to purchase this again. I figure give myself a month off and repeat the process (not that Murad says that you need to take a month off, it's my own decision).  You can purchase Murad products from a variety of retailers and from the Murad website.

Murad Acne And Aging Skin Solution Kit Giveaway

I just wanted to spend a few months thanking my readers with giveaways since I missed my 3 year blog anniversary on July 13th.  I started on July 13, 2008 and as you can read in the brief description I wrote not too much has changed about my skin but a lot has changed abut my life.  My 16 month old is now 4 and a half. I am less one bulldog and have had 2 other cats come and go in my life.  I'm still married to my wonderful Mr. Sith and he's the most supportive husband a blogger could wish for.  I have learned so much in three years but I still feel like a N00b on the blogging scene at times.  I will continue to have a few more giveaways until the end of the year to celebrate the blogs 3rd anniversary but I will not have a blow out big giveaway like I did for my second. (Namely because I spent my own hard earned money for the prizes, shipped it out, and never heard back from the winner....not that she was required to send a thank you, but it would have been nice to know that she actually received the darn thing.)

Anyway, THIS time I have a special gift from Murad to give away to my readers in the USA and Canada.  Don't worry, my beautiful international readers, I'll have another giveaway soon in which you can enter.  This prize may not appeal to everyone.  It's an Acne Solutions kit but also an Aging Solutions kit.  It's really geared towards women or men in their 30's and 40's who are concerned about aging and still are experiencing breakouts.  I have used some of the the items featured in this kit in the past and have experience favorable results.  For example.  The Acne Spot Treatment with Sulfur and Salicylic Acid really speeds up the healing process for those pesky pimples that magically appear that the most inopportune time.  The Anti-Aging Moisturizer with SPF 20 not only is a nice calming moisturizer WITH sunscreen it has worked to help slightly control oil throughout the day for me.  But it never made my skin feel greasy or sticky which is always a plus.  That's why I had no worries that the Time Release Acne Cleanser and the Acne & Wrinkle Reducer would probably be as effective as the other tried and true Murad products I have used.  So why did I not keep this kit for myself?  Well in all honestly. The kind of acne I am dealing with lately is hormonal and due to diet. While I have found Murad's products very effective in the past, I just really needed to take a break with skin care for a while and go back to basics, give my skin a rest and start by changing my diet (no dairy and no sugar) and see what those changes make if any.

The giveaway starts 10/03/2011 and ends at 12:01 AM EST on 10/10/2011. ONE random winner will be chosen by the robots at rafflecopter and contacted via e-mail. Should the winner not respond within 3 business days, a new winner will be selected.

There are 6 ways to enter and each way is worth one entry.

You will need to enter using the rafflecopter widget, below.  If you don't see the widget, it is probably because your firewall is blocking it from showing up.  Trust me. It's there...even though I can't see it from my work computer...I can see it from my home computer, iPad and Smart Phone.

The only mandatory entry is
1. Leave a comment on the blog post.  It need be nothing more than. "Nice giveaway" or "I am not a robot" or something like that.
