Purchase - A Neutral Review for a Neutral Palette - NYX 10 Color Shadow Runway Collection in Champagne and Caviar

I’m a bit nervous about this review. I’m afraid I’ll get flamed and a bunch of hate mail/comments. So let me start out by saying the review is based on MY experience. Not yours. It’s based on MY standards, not yours. It’s MY opinion, but you are welcome to express yours here but don’t tell me I’m wrong, but my opinion on my personal experience is just that: Personal. You can say you disagree, and what you like about it, I’m way OK with that. Sorry but I’m a tad shell shocked from my review of Moroccan Oil and the impending hate mail I got that I had to turn off the comments section…however that still hasn’t stopped people from e-mailing me that they think I’m stupid.

OK. Now on to the review

I was interested in the I was interested in The NYX 10 Color Shadow Runway Collection palette, but sometimes I get overwhelmed with SOOO many choices (10 shadows) and I like to test swatch before I buy most of the time. However, in a moment of insanity and loss of self control I found the NYX 10 Color Shadow Runway Collection in “Champagne and Caviar” on sale at NonpareilBoutique.com and caved in and go it. I figured that I had seen plenty of swatches online and it was only $8 so I figured why not? So I clicked on “Place Order Now” and waited. I didn’t have to wait too long as Nonpareil Boutique mailed it the same day I ordered and I received my palette in 3 days.

The palette itself is a decent size. The shadows are a decent size too. Not too small. I would say about the size of a Majolica Majorca eye shadow. What I found, however, was that the quality is not the same as the NYX square singles. They are inconsistent. Some are very sheer, some are chalky and some are decently pigmented. It’s not easy to tell which is which just by looking at them in the pan, and at first swatch it may be hard to tell as well, but once you apply them you can easily see these are not all together so great.

Lets start with the first row:
Color # 1 is a sheer beige bordering on champagne color. Frost. It’s pretty sheer and I swatched it heavily here, just to make it show up. It is a decent highlighter color but it really takes a lot of layering to make it show up.

Color # 2 is a light brown taupe. Satin. It is so sheer that you could use it as an all over wash of color with a darker crease if you like but it will take a stiff brush to pick up the pigment and pat it on your eyelids if you want any of it to show up on you

Color # 3 is a nude beige. Satin. It is nice as a base color. It’s nothing spectacular but it’s decent enough. Anyone darker than a MAC NC25/30 may have a difficult time having this actually show up on them

Color # 4 is a gold champagne. Frost. It’s fairly well pigmented. It can be used as a highlight or alone with some black liner and a deep red lip for a classic look.

Color # 5 is a warm light brown. Frost. This would work nicely as a base color for those who are a NC25/30 or darker. But could also be used as a crease color for those who want a VERY subtle daytime look when used with shadow # 3 or 4

OK. So far the first row isn’t all that great. I hoped the second row would be better. It sort of was…sort of.

Color # 6 is white. Matte. I think I am one of the few that can appreciate a matte color in a palette. It’s great as a highlight because sometimes if the rest of the shadows used on the eye are frosty adding a frosty highlighter can be almost too over the top. This makes it a much more subtle and believable look.

Color # 7 is a warm cinnamon brown. Satin. This is a decent crease color or liner color but you kind have to work it to get it to show up. It’s not as pigmented on the skin as it looks in the pan.

Color # 8 is a deep dark chocolate brown. Matte. This shadow is nicely pigmented. It is a decent easily bendable matte that goes great as a crease color or liner color. I don’t detect any red tones to this brown, which is nice.

Color # 9 is a light warm pink. Frost. This is the prettiest pink I have seen because it’s not toooooo pink. But it’s also the most disappointing shadow as it’s overly soft and crumbly. When applying I get major fall out on my cheeks. It’s just a shame.

Color # 10 is black. Matte. This, like the brown is well pigmented. Easily blends and makes a nice crease or liner color. It’s a good neutral black that does not run blue or red. It can be sheered out well, and does not seem to have gray tones to it either.

So there you go. A surprisingly AVERAGE palette. I guess you get what you pay for with this one. If you are the kind of person that does not have a lot of neutral shadows and don’t want to pay a ton of money to get some, this might be a good alternative for you. If you are like me, have a TON of neutral shadows and think how neat it would be to have them all in one palette. Keep moving. You can do better than this NYX palette.

  1. I can see how much you're trying NOT to offend anyone! Oh dear!!! I'm sorry for the hate mail/comments! It's your blog and your opinion - and I really do trust your opinion when it comes to neutral shades. I guess I won't be trying this!

  2. I always like your reviews, regardless of whether it's the experience I've had with the product or not. People need to lighten up. Your blog is awesome, I'm always happy when I see a new post!

  3. This was great! Screw the people who don't understand the meaning of an opinion. But seriously, I'm a little saddened by this palette =( oh well. It's still insanely gorgeous to look at though. Is it sad that I still wouldn't mind it? I feel like some DuWop Payoff would make it amazing.

  4. Ok, Sitthy, I AGREE WITH YOU! I am a high end girl, and I don't apologize about it. You shouldn't either!!

BTW, for some nice taupes from Kanebo, come over to my blog PWAHAHAHAHAH!

  5. he he, it is hard being a blogger and actually stating your own opinion. I wish I had read your review last week, cause I ordered this palette a couple of days before :(. Mmm, not looking forward to it now.

  6. Who do you think you are to have your own opinion? An individual?!?!?!?!?! Just teasing, I can't believe people don't understand that and they get so upset by it, oh well!
I've tried a couple of their singles and I'm def not impressed, so if these are lesser quality than that count me out. Plus they're too frosty!!! I'm looking for a matte (or as close as I can get to matte) neutral palette, any ideas?

  7. While I love mine, I can see that it's not comparable to, say, my Nars Best palette, however even my Nars e/s are inconsistent. For the price, I think it's outstanding. I also find that the shimmery shades work better when applied wet. I love that I don't have to worry about it like I do all my high-end palettes, esp when I travel. Which I won't be doing much of in the next year. Boo-freaking-hoo! And ignore the haters - contrarians piss me off.

  8. Thanks for this review! I've been wondering if NYX is all that great since it seems to be very popular. I normally don't use low-end products b/c I find the quality and colors to be so-so. I must admit I was tempted by this because of all the raves and reviews, but thanks to you, I think I'll save my $$$ to try out some of their singles instead.

  9. Wow, the hate mail can get really vitriolic huh?
    That's wrong.
The whole beauty of blogging (har har) is that everyone can express themselves freely. That's true freedom of speech.
Anyway, I really value the lukewarm/bad reviews, because they're honest experiences. I stopped reading some bloggers that just rave about absolutely everything - after a while it's just overload. When they don't post any negative reviews, it makes me wonder just how good they are at evaluating things. I understand that some people prefer to stay positive, so that's their choice.
In the end, the more reviews out there, the better for the consumer (you and I). It helps us find the products that will work for us individually, and helps us avoid the ones that won't.

Thanks for the review! I've yet to be able to try any NYX products as they're overpriced in Japan (boo!) but when I do, I'll start with the eye shadow singles. So annoying about inconsistent quality...

  10. GRRR, who cares about those haters! they need to get a life and stop sending hate mail.

I love your reviews btw. I'm so dissapointed by the second row! The darker colors were not pigmented at all.

  11. What the hell, people really write in to bash you for your opinion? That's why anyone goes to a blog for reviews anyway - that bloggers personal review of a product! Guh!

I haven't been reading long, just a few months, but I love your blog. It's not too wordy, frivolous, and you seem quite level-headed. :) I'm sick of flaky chicks.

Oh yeah, and Moroccan oil is crap. It's chock full of silicone fillers - that do nothing for your hair, aside from coat it and weigh it down - at a rapey price. Fudge those guys.

Oh, yeah, thanks for the review of this palette. I'm actually in need of some good basic colors. Too stocked up on crazy greens, purples, hot pinks, and liquid metals (gold, bronze, etc..). But this doesn't look to be my thing.

  12. You know, I've never been HUGE fans of the NYX shadows in general - terrible staying power and is always powdery when I dip my brush in. Although the colors are quite nice.

I'm sad that the palettes didn't work out for you. They looked promising :x

  13. Sorry to hear that you got the hate mail. Those people has very narrow mind.

    Thanks for your review.
coz i have heard so many good reviews of this product but you are right, 'you get what you pay for'. I know that I can't expect it's gonna be good as Bobbi Brown, MAC, Lunasol blah blah blah. But it's good enough for 8$. Thanks

  14. Hi! I'm new in this make-up blogging business, but God! The point of these blogs are to share our opinions/experiences, so poor little indecisive girl can relate to some bloggers. Get the idea whether an eyeshadow or lipstick would look good on her, worth the money, etc, etc. Not every beauty product is good! What's good for one person might be sh*t for others! Are there really so much dumbasses who doesn't get this? Gosh!
I appreciate when a blogger writes the truth and not simply raves about a lousy stuff! Keep up the good work! ;D
$8 is pretty cheap for a palette...the colors look good (in the pan) but I'm sure they would crease on me in no time, and that's a no go for me.
    uh this came out long...sorry ^_^;

  15. This is the second time I've seen a beauty blogger apprehensive about posting a not-so-glowing review in the last few weeks. I think it's terrible that you should even have to think about it. People are stupid. Anyway, I love the palette but I can see that it's not for everyone. I really think the palette is best for those who are fair and want a very light daytime look.

  16. Pinksith! I never post on comment forms on blogs (except to win free stuff), but I just wanted to say thanks for your honest review on everything! Sometimes the hype surrounding an item can really generate a momentum of its own, and it's always great to have someone who can review honestly without the hype (even if the act of purchase was due to the hype). Anyway, thanks for this review! You saved me a bit of money by killing this lemming! I have enough neutrals as it is, and I see that if I had bought this I would be dissatisfied with it. Thank you, and please keep writing honestly!

  17. I liked the NYX palette, though I don't think it's the BEST THING EVER, but I see myself in a long term relationship with it. I too am a neutrals fiend. I'd say it was on par with, say, MAC's eyeshadows as of late. Is it just me, or are MAC eyeshadows ludicrously unpigmented for how much they cost? My pennies go to Urban Decay these days...

I haven't had awesome luck with the much-raved about NYX singles either. I mean, I like 'em and all, but they never quite work for me unless I use them wet over UDPP.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know I enjoy your blog very much - I certainly can and do appreciate honest reviews!

  18. You know I feel the same way to you, I'm so sad that I only find these palettes as "meh" because they got so much hype and my expectations were much higher. Thankfully each palette has at least 3 or 4 shadows I really like which still makes it a pretty good deal in my opinion, I just wish I was in love like I thought I'd be!

  19. That's unfortunate that half the colors are not pigmented -_- I guess this is what cream shadow bases are for
