Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Tough As Taupe - Review, Photos, Swatches

It's no secret how much I love taupe eyeshadow.  I mean a lot of people love taupe, but it really has a special place in my heart.  I love the color taupe so much, that many of my color choices, beyond cosmetics, end up taupe. (Clothing, furniture, pets, cars)  I'm drawn to the utter banality of taupe. Taupe is predictable as the sunrise and just as beautiful.  There are so many shades of taupe, just like shades in a sunrise, that I find it impossible to own too many taupe shadows. Each one is different in their own way. Each one a "Special Snowflake".  Today I bring you another entrant into my taupe collective.

Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Tough As Taupe.

Maybelline released only 10 shadows in this formula.  The majority are very vibrant colors.  The fact that Tough As Taupe exists in the rainbow colored, long wearing, eyeshadow community of the Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow group, is a surprise and a treat.  The nine other shade names are:
Fierce & Tangy - Orange
Too Cool - White
Audacious Asphalt - Pewter Grey
Painted Purple - Purple
Bad To The Bronze - Bronze
Pomegranate Punk - Maroon/Deep Red
Tenacious Teal - Teal
Bold Gold - Gold
Edgy Emerald - Green

I find the consistency of the Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Tough As Taupe to be very creamy and very similar to MAC Paint Pots. Although, I find that the Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Tough As Taupe seems to dry faster than the MAC paint pots.  I do own the long since discontinued MAC Paint Pot in Stray Gray, but I could not for the life of me, find it in my stash.  That is a clear indicator that I have too much makeup.  However, from memory, I think the shades are nearly identical, so if you are still pining away over MAC Stray Gray, then Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Tough As Taupe is your dupe.  The consistency of Estee Lauder Double Wear Eyeshadow Cremes are slightly more sheer than the Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows and they do not set as quickly as the Maybelline shadows.  The Benefit Cosmetics Creaseless Cream Shadows are the sheerest of the bunch and have the most working time before they set when compared to Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows, MAC Paint Pots, and Estee Lauder Double Wear Eyeshadow Cremes.

The color of Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Tough As Taupe is a rich and opaque grey beige. One thing to note The color in the pot, when you first open it, is NOT the color underneath.  Que?  Yes. The color on top seems to be a completely different color from what you actually get when you swipe the color with your finger the first time.  NOT COOL! It ends up looking more grey than brown. This creamy shadow has no shimmer at all and dries to a decent matte texture which is nice. One must work quickly and sheer out the edges before they set.  That makes working on one eye at a time essential.

See what I mean? It's like 2 different colors!

Here's the issue.
I did not find this shadow lasting anywhere near 24 hours on my lids.  I actually went out to purchase this shadow after seeing a tweet from Maybelline.  They had retweeted a person extolling the 24 hour virtues of the Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow. I should have known it was too good to be true.  I already know that Maybelline won't be retweeting my tweet that these so-called Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows last only 4 to 6 hours without primer and 8 to 10 with a primer.  Nope. I bet they won't even.  It was crease city when I applied Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Tough As Taupe for the first time.  I used no primer. Just clean lids. I applied using my finger (as instructed on the Maybelline website) and I managed to get a fairly sheer but even application.  Four short hours later and my eye was creasing faster than a cheap suit on a long car trip.  I tried the next day applying Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Tough As Taupe over an eye primer while using a synthetic brush. I achieved a more opaque yet even application this time, but, by hour number 8 I was creasing faster than the lines in Daniel Craig's forehead.  Not 24 hours by a long shot.  Well there goes my 15 seconds of celebrity. I'm sure Maybelline isn't going to retweet "@Maybelline 24Hr Color Tattoo e/s lasts as long as Kim Kardashian's Virginity" (Low Blow) or "@Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo e/s is about as stable as Spiderman The Musical's stunt team" (Beating a dead horse) or "@Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo e/s disappeared faster than Charlie Sheen's career" (not winning!). (I'm just devastated...can't you tell?)

[UPDATE] I did get very good results when I wore this with a powder shadow on top.  Almost 14 hours of wear, which is great. That being said, because I received so much positive feedback from you all. I will recommend this...but, as I mention below, your results may vary depending on how oily your eyelids are. [UPDATE END]

And I did not do such a great job sheering/blending out the edges.

Do you NEED this?  No. Sadly. [UPDATE] Maybe? I re-tested this with a powder shadow on top and I found it wore a whole 14 hours with no creasing.  So I think the trick is to use the Maybelline eye tattoo under a powder shadow or top the Maybelline with loose setting powder....that is if you have oily lids like I do.  [UPDATE END] Yes, the color is great. Yes, the consistency is nice. But if it's called "24 Hour Color" then it should last at least 15 to 20 hours. I don't even need it to last 24 whole hours. 15 would be fine with me.  My lids are fairly oily, so your results may vary.  I would love to hear from readers that DID have good experience with this product. Specifically I would like to know if: a) you used a primer. b) You have normal, oily or dry lids. c) If you use eye cream.

Color comparisons. It's almost a cream version of the powder eyeshadow from MAC called Copperplate

  1. I love this eyeshadow. However I do use it over UD Primer Potion - otherwise it fades away and creases sooner than I'd like it to. The name and the 24hours claim are pretty deceiving... but I still like it.

  2. I have had a great experience with this shadow and I am normally not a fan of cream shadows. I would say I have normal lids (not oily, not dry). I always use a primer (either UDPP or ELF eyeshadow primer) and have not had any trouble with creasing at all! I do agree that this leans toward the gray side of taupe. I also found that it can slightly lighten a dark eyeshadow that you might use in your crease. For example, I used the Tough as Taupe on my lid and blended it up into my crease. Then I used Glamour Me from the Tarte True Blood palette in the crease. Normally I find Glamour Me to be an almost black-plum color, but with the TaT under it, it came off as a gorgeous, rich plum.

    1. Ooh that color change sounds beautiful! I'm going to have to experiment with this.

    2. I'm glad to see that you had better results using a powder on top of this! And yes, experimenting is called for...I'll definitely be playing around with it using different colors! =)

  3. I found this worked well on my eyes. 24 hours? No way! But lasted through the work day. I do find the color to be more gray as you said which I do not like. It's almost a "purple taupe" on me which makes me look like I have a black eye LMAO.

  4. This lasts a very long time on me. that being said, though, i do use a primer, usually Benefit's Stay Don't Stray or Laura Mercier's eye primer in Wheat. Also, every time i've worn it, i've set this with a translucent powder. and it lasts and lasts and lasts...Maybe this eyeshadow should only be used as the middle of an eyeshadow sandwich, so it kind of sets on both ends? i can see where using it alone, or especially with no powder on top, it could crease quite quickly.

    1. Yes. I tried it yesterday with a shadow on top and it lasted really well. I'll be updating my review.

  5. I was disappointed that it turned into a gray on me. It started off looking nice but by day's end I didn't like the color at all. I had no problem with it lasting without creasing though. I have Bad to the Bronze and I much prefer that one.

  6. I'm sorry this didn't work for you . It lasts all day for me with no primer, zero creasing.

  7. Great post! I have yet to try these and probably won't but glad there's something to kill any would-be lemmings now! I hate it when companies make ridiculous claims like "24hrs"

  8. I didn't like the color of Tough as taupe so got Bad to the Bronze instead. Having no primer with me, I wore it with Benefit Bikini Line as highlight and it really did last on me all day. I dont know if it's just a difference in formula between the matte and shimmery texture of Bad to the Bronze or because I "set" it with the powder eyeshadow. I have super oily lids and this particular color and formula (bad to the bronze) is a HG for me. Reminds me of MUFE #15 Taupe but warmer.

  9. Looks stunning -a winning shade!

  10. I did like the neutral colors of this product. I found the colors to be true, it's easy to apply (I thought) and lasted me through the work day plus (10 hrs). I applied over UDPP with a brush. There was no creasing. I have normal skin.
I do not care for the purple, orange or blue color. I have not tried the white. I found the purple too sheer and will probably take it back or use it as a base.

  11. I did an eye look with Tough as Taupe and a dark grey powder shadow (can't recall offhand what it was) in the outer half of the crease, and found that only the inner aspect of my eye showed creasing by the end of the day. I wore Bad to the Bronze with MAC Charcoal Brown in the crease and a sheer nude shadow over the rest of it and had no creases all day. I didn't use primer with either. From these highly scientific tests, I've concluded that on eyelids like mine, setting with powder is crucial to extended wear. My lids aren't uber-oily, but very few things don't crease on me without primer.

    1. Thank you for reporting your highly scientific results! I think the Bronze is going to last longer, all on its own and using a powder on top will make it last longer...as you reported! :-)

  12. Great review! I saw some the other day, but I wasn't sure about it yet!

    Thanks

  13. I'm not sure why these creased on you after 4 hours because I wore the same color yesterday on bare lids and didn't have any creasing all day long. I wouldn't know if they last 24 hrs because I don't wear makeup that long, nobody should really. Maybe you have extremely oily lids? The Urban Decay 24/7 liners claim to be 24 fr wear but they don't last 24 hrs either. Don't expect miracles from makeup, people. It's foolish.

    1. I never expect it to last 24 hours...but longer than 4 would be nice. I think you're right about my lids. they must be super oily. I did have success when I put a powder shadow on top of the cream shadow!

  14. I just got one for Christmas, and I'm waiting to pick up Tough as Taupe and perhaps another... We'll see though! I've never used the MAC Paint Pots, and probably won't... But who knows?! The colors at least look promising, and with my "normal" lids- I'm hoping I can wear these without creasing.

Although- I do have to say after looking at the color difference once you "swiped" the color, that IS a little off-putting.

  15. The picture of the two different colors is great--to see, not if I purchased it, of course. @Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo e/s disappeared faster than Charlie Sheen's career" (not winning!). OMG!! Hysterical! Thanks for a great post, and making me laugh! x

  16. The colour is really nice but too bad about the staying power.

    1. YEah. Kinda sucks....but when I wear it under a powder it lasts much longer.

  17. I have these in Tough as Taupe and Bad to the Bronze, and they are my new favorite eye products! I have normal lids, not oily but not super dry either (I do use an eyecream), and these have lasted absolutely all day long for me. I have been using a powder shadow on top for some contrast, so maybe that helps? I was a bad girl this weekend and slept in my makeup one night, and my eye shadow still looked nice when I woke up. Sorry these didn't work for you, I love them!

  18. It's so funny how different skin chemistry can have such an impact on cosmetic wear. I bought two of these when I first saw them and liked them so much I bought two more. I'm probably going to end up with all of them!

I have oily lids and use eye cream but only underneath, as a primer for my concealer. I applied this with no primer and it lasted with minimal fading or creasing for 14 hours, until I took it off before bed.

  19. My eyelids bounce around from normal, to dry, and I use eye creams. Sometimes I use a primer, if so, it is the Palladio Herbal one.

I haven't used the MAC paint pots, and thought this product would be a good way to try this concept.

I started out with the Tough as Taupe to use as a 'base color'. I wore it with some smashbox colors (love my Mega photo op palette!) and was very impressed with the longevity of it. I then tried it using my Palladio Herbal primer and my eyes looked fantab for at least 12 hours. No budging, no smudging and no creasing! Usually an impossible feat for my eye lids.

The next time I used it, I used it by itself w/out primer. I wasn't wow'd by the color, and had decent wear time. I then tried it with a primer and it lasted and didn't move around, and used a darker color in my crease.

Overall, for the Taupe, I prefer it as a base color, with a primer.
I also have the white one, it is very sheer and pretty, but like it as a base, I also have the bronze and like it, and need to play more with it. I have the Asphalt, and need to break it out and use it. I am interested in the gold one, and possibly the maroon one. I have zero interest in the brighter colors.

When you can combine coupons with a bogo sale, these are worth a purchase, and a great way to dip your toes into a paint pot type product. Hopefully they will come out with more shades both wild and neutral.

  20. I have VERY oily lids. The only one that have stayed on me so far is Bare Escentuals Prime Time Primer Shadows, but I haven't tried any other cream shadows. May I know what creams work for you?

  21. Nita, currently I am using a CVS version of the ROC eye cream called Firming eye lift cream. It isn't really creamy, more like a thick serum, I use it under my eye and pat it only on my brow bone. Through blinking it will work on my lids. If I need more moisture, I will dab on some eye cream (currently using up a Lacura eye cream) over it the same way as above. Make sure to wait a few moments before applying a prime.

    Hope this helps a bit.

  22. I just purchased two of these over the weekend and I was skeptical. I usually just swipe on a bit of MAC paint pot for my work day makeup and by !:00 or 2:00 they've creased. I had no such problems with the Color Tattoo. My lids are pretty oily and I managed to leave work with my eye makeup perfectly intact. If they expand their neutral options I would never buy another Paint Pot again.

  23. The color looks sort of muddy and blah :/

  24. I am so glad I read this - mine creased after just a few hours, too!

I applied on a clean eyelid (all Tough as Taupe, Bad to the Bronze, and Mac paintpot in Constructivist) with a synthetic brush. I wanted to try without powder shadow on top of it to really test it. I have extremely oily skin (including lids). I found this creases no more and no less than any old shadow with UD Primer in Eden. Will try w/Eden tomorrow and no powder shadow on top. That might come in two days...

  25. I bought the orange one (bright and tangy?) and LOVE IT! I know the colour isn't for everyone but I adore orange. I have only worn it twice and have learned a few tricks... The first time I wore it I found it dried down very fast so I absolutely agree with doing one eye at a time! Also by the end of the day my lids looked a little dry which they never do, but with no creasing. This was after an impressive 12 hours or so! I didn't wear anything over or under it. Next time I decided to try it with an eye cream underneath, which I usually skip during the day. So I used my Elizabeth Arden Prevage and then for some reason thought I would use my concealer on my lids too. I hardley ever use lid primer, just my mac prolong wear concealer. This time I also layered a copper estee lauder shadow over top. By the end of the day there was very minor creasing, again after 12 hours or maybe more. I think next time I will do eye cream but no concealer! I will definitely be purchasing more colours!

  26. I got Tough as Taupe and it shows up as a medium gray color, which I don't like on me...but I love using it as a base. I especially like using it under regular brown eyeshadows, because they are instantly transformed into taupes. It's like having an endless amount of taupes! Maybe that's what they were going for with this one.
