Vaseline® Petroleum Jelly Beauty Uses and Giveaway

A little while back I was contacted and asked to talk about Vaseline® Petroleum Jelly and the many uses for the product. Now, I know there are many of you out there that don't like to use petroleum based products. That's fine. In fact, I try to avoid them too. So why am I doing a review of Vaseline® Petroleum Jelly? I think that when I agreed to do this post, accept the press samples and a $25 AmEx Gift Card (which was supposed to be used to buy makeup to show holiday looks w/ Vaseline), I was entranced by the mini pots of Vaseline Lip Therapy.  I mean LOOK?

How cute is that? They sent me one and it's just as cute in person. I love using it and I'm not even stressed about contamination by putting my finger in the product because I'm constantly washing my hands. But the fact remains that Vaseline is a petroleum based item.  I'll understand if you balk at this post, but I I agreed to do the post, I accepted the samples they sent.  I have used Vaseline for every use mentioned below except the "non traditional" ones and I have written about my experience.  In the interest of good faith, to show I'm not going to profit from the use of petroleum based products I am giving away the $25 AmEx gift card that they sent to one lucky reader.  I won't even require you to "Like" my facebook page, Follow me on Twitter or "Like" a brand page.  (However you are more than welcome to do that on your own accord) Nope. I'm just going to require you to leave a message in the comments section so I know you're not a robot.  That's it.  So what do you think?  Can we put the controversy around petroleum based cosmetics aside and let's talk about the bevy of beauty uses for Vaseline® Petroleum Jelly?  YES WE CAN!

Lips
It’s a great lip balm!  Use Vaseline to help moisturize, soften, and smooth lips - Yup. Use it at night as a lip balm and my lips are soft and smooth when I wake up.
Turn old lipsticks into fun, new glosses by mixing remnants with a dab of Vaseline - HAHAHAHA Old Lipsticks. I have too many Old Glosses to warrant making my lipsticks into glosses, but I have used Vaseline to sheer out some red lipsticks to give more of a lip stain effect.
Exfoliate your lips by applying Vaseline and lightly brushing with a toothbrush - Yup. When I forget to apply lip balm at night I wake up to chapped lips.  I take a soft child's toothbrush apply a dab of Vaseline to it and scrub (GENTLY). My lips are easily exfoliated and they are super moisturized to boot!

Eyes
Moisturize eyelids daily by coating them with a layer of Vaseline before bed - I have done this on the occasion that I run out of eye cream (Hey...it can happen, even to me) or during the winter when I'm out sledding sans makeup and I want to protect the delicate skin around my eyes from dry cold air.
Tame unruly eyebrows by applying a thin layer of Vaseline and lightly combing into place. - Yup. Works pretty well, not as great as a brow gel, but it will do in a pinch!

Face
Put a spoonful of Vaseline into a bowl and lightly warm in the microwave for 10 second intervals to make a face cream that you can use every night before bed – and be sure to take care when handling hot materials - I tried this once.  It didn't break me out, but I am far too oily to do this on an even semi regular basis.

Hands & Feet
Apply a dab of Vaseline to fingernails to keep them resilient while also keeping cuticles soft - Do this a lot. When I forget to use something to moisturize my cuticles they end up looking like a crime scene in a matter of days.
Put Vaseline around the base of your nail to stop nail polish from getting on your skin - I did this when I had a sprained finger on my left hand. USing the Vaseline made my application easy to clean up because you know how bad using your non dominant hand to paint your nails can get.
Apply Vaseline to your hands, then put on a pair of gloves and allow moisture to soak into the skin overnight - Yup. Cotton gloves and a boat load of Vaseline.  I got annoyed by the gloves in the middle of the night and ended up taking them off.  Oh well.
Apply Vaseline on your feet before putting on socks and wear overnight to help achieve smooth feet and toes - Ah yes. I do this a lot. My feet are always dry so this has been a great way to keep them looking pretty.

Hair
Use a dab of Vaseline to slick back stray hairs in a ponytail for a smooth, polished look - Yes. I have put this in my hair.  A teeny amount goes a long way.
Rub a bit of Vaseline into the ends of your hair to hide the appearance of split ends - Used sparingly it can make my hair look better/healthier, but I have such fine hair I have to b careful about using too much.

And More!
Rub a thin layer of Vaseline to pulse points before applying fragrance to encourage the fragrance to last longer - This I have done on many occasions. For some reason fragrances fade on me very quickly.  I also like expensive perfume and don't want to use it all up...this helps my perfume last longer so I spray less!
Use Vaseline as a body moisturizer by applying it to dry patches on your body - Who hasn't put this Vaseline on your elbows, knees or heels at least once.  It works too!
Apply Vaseline to moisturize freshly shaved legs - Making the mistake of applying lotion to my shaved legs was awful. I felt like my legs were on fire.  Applying Vaseline to my legs after shaving didn't irritate them at all and they had a silky look.

Here are a few more "wacky" or non traditional uses for Vaseline as a beauty aid.
Mix a pinch of Vaseline with powdered drink mix or melted chocolate chips to create a flavored lip gloss - Umm? Melted Chocolate Chips?  No thanks.
Apply Vaseline to your teeth to help you keep smiling - I remember this tip from ages and ages ago. I thought only beauty queens did this.
Smear a thin coat of Vaseline along your teeth before applying lipstick to prevent the color from sticking to them - I need to remember this when I'm 70 years old as I have yet to see a 70+ year old woman without lipstick on her teeth. (just kidding...sort of)
Rub Vaseline over old nail polish to make it look new again - Nah. I think this will work, but I doubt I would ever do it.

I was provided with Vaseline® Petroleum Jelly, Vaseline® Lip Therapy Original®, Q-tips® Precision Tips™, a $25 gift card and information about the products by RocketXL. All opinions are 100% my own.

  1. I admit, I bought the mini Vaseline just because it's cute and small.

My favorite way to use it is applying to the skin around my forehead before dying my hair. It prevents the dye from seeping into my hairline and giving me a faint red glow on my head.

  2. that is an awesome idea about the hair thing! I never think out of the box when it comes to Vaseline but I will definitely be trying some of these! thanks!

  6. I'm not a robot! I had kind of forgotten all about Vaseline till I read this post, but I loooooooooove miniatures! I would probably use this most on my cuticles, since what you said yesterday about interviewing with crime-scene nails struck a chord. I don't really have a big problem with petroleum jelly, except it's kind of weird to think about. And can I just say that the idea of putting any kind of jelly on my teeth makes me want to flap my hands in horror?!??!

  7. I've always used it to remove stubborn eye makeup though now I'm thinking of using it to attack my husbands dry winter skin!

  8. Vaseline (or the generic versions) is definitely an HG for me. I use it daily as a lip balm (works sooo much better than any lip balm I've tried) and in a thin layer over dry areas of my face. Whenever I don't have Vaseline and use a different lip balm overnight I wake up with really chapped and tight lips :(. It never breaks me out either! :)

  9. I love Vaseline for dry feet, elbows, and lips!

  10. I do the sock trick all the time, as well as on elbows and hands. It works pretty well after the shower. I've also used it on brows and lids, as well as on models cheekbones (sparingly) for a bit of sheen.

  13. All three of my children have eczema, and I used to put vaseline on them after a bath. It really helped. I like the creamy vaseline lotion the best.

    Thanks!

  19. Those are super cute little lip balm containers! I'm a sucker for adorable packaging so I can see how you were drawn in. A super macho way that Vaseline is used is in Boxing/MMA fights to prevent punches from tearing open the fighters' faces. It's usually applied to the cheekbones and browbones to make glancing blows slip off instead of splitting the skin. Vaseline also works to stop minor cuts from bleeding where you don't want to put a bandaid, like the face!

  20. I love to use it as a eye makeup remover in emergency situations when I dont actually have my remover (at work, on a date, on vacation)!

  23. I've never really used it, but I defintiely want to try some of these suggestions! Especially coating my feet with it and sleeping in cotton socks. My feet are so bad that when I finally bought a Ped Egg my boyfriend said "Yay! now your feet won't be so disgusting anymore!" xD

  27. Nope, I'm not a robot. But, neither am I afraid of petroleum jelly used in beauty products; I think a lot of this stuff gets over-blown! People have been using this stuff for years and years, most with no ill-effects. I personally have used Vaseline for most of the purposed mentioned here, as well as many others, and it's never caused me any problems! Besides, that, I think the tiny little jar is as cute as a button.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I haven't used Vaseline in ages, but I'd be willing to reconsider!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Tiny Vaseline jars! I can see why you were entranced :P

My favorite use for Vaseline is to keep polish off my skin when I'm doing water marbling designs.

  30. MR ROBOTO. That's proves I r human right? :D
That mini jar is pretty adorable. I haven't used vaseline since I was little and I don't even remember what for. I think we just made a mess with it because it was gooey. My friend uses it as makeup remover. I'm too scared it'll break me out but I would totally use that baby jar because it's so KYOOT!

I *wish* they would reformulate--they could and it would STILL be awesome!

Brava to you for doing such a great post! (and my hubby just got me the q-tips I'm excited lol)

  46. I always have a mini vaseline in my bag for chapped lips or dry skin.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I use Vaseline for dry skin that is, or is vulnerable to becoming, cracked and/or bleeding. It is particularly useful around my nose and the corners of my mouth in the fall and winter. I put it on before bed so that the heater in my room doesn't dry me out.

Vaseline also does wonders for nose bleeds. After the bleeding stops, I use a Q-Tip to rub it into the skin inside my nose to stop it from breaking open again. You can also prevent nose bleeds by doing this before going to bed on the nights when you have to have a heater on and/or are feeling particularly dry (though, don't use it when you're congested, as that will make it worse).

Another use for Vaseline is to remove makeup. It doesn't just work on your face, though. It can be used to remove lipstick or other makeup stains from fabrics: just put a bit Vaseline on the stains before washing.

Vaseline also can be useful to keep things from getting stuck, and unsticking things. Use it to keep the nail polish/glue bottle cap from sticking (use it on the bottle neck before putting the cap back on), to remove gum (including from the hair, carpet, and furniture), etc.

I've never thought to use it to exfoliate lips, though. I might try that one.

  61. I used to use vaseline all the time for my excema. It was the only thing that worked to heal the cuts and super dry skin every winter. I've also taken an old eyeshadow and mixed it with vaseline to make a gloss once too. Vaseline does a bunch!

  65. Vaseline has been my grandmothers go to for as long as I remember. While reading your post (which was great by the way) I couldnt help but smile and think off all the ridiculous things that she used to tell us to use vaseline for. Anything ranging from a hang nail to cancer.. She would insist that it would work.
