If one were to google the word "Santorum" one would most likely get a definition of the word in one of the top three results on Google. The definition is pornographic and in the interest of my more sensitive readers I will not "define" it here. But you can do a google search for the word "Santorum" and there will be a definition of the word for you to read.

| Santorum Back Label |
In May 2003, gay rights activist and columnist, Dan Savage held a contest among his readers to create a definition for the word "Santorum". This was in response to comments by then-U.S. Senator Rick Santorum during an interview with the Associated Press that had been criticized as anti-gay. Savage announced the winning entry, which defined "Santorum" as "XXXXXXXXXXXX" and created a web site, spreadingsantorum.com (and santorum.com), to promote the definition, which became a prominent search result for Santorum's name on several web search engines.

| Santorum Matte |
The geniuses at ManGlaze came up with Santorum as the name for their newest Matte Brown Nail Polish. It think it is a fitting name. As you can see by the label on the back, they carefully craft each Santorum. When Senator Santorum pulled out of the race for president after repeatedly coming in Number 2 and his campaign was aborted, there was talk that they might change the name. Despite Santorum pulling out early, ahead of the race’s climax, ManGlaze didn't rename the polish, and I'm glad.

There is no shame in having Santorum on your fingers. It happens to a lot of people ...that are as excited about matte nail polish I am.

One thing I can say, is that it is a lot nicer having Santorum on my nails than I ever thought it would be. Of course you don't want to get Santorum under your nails as it might prove hard to remove. Santorum is incredibly versatile and can be worn many ways.

This Santorum is thick. I suppose it has to be. It's not so thick that is doesn't spread easily and self level, but this Santorum is thick enough that only one coat may satisfy you. I certainly like the quality of this Santorum. It's neither frothy or runny. It's just the right viscosity one would expect from ManGlaze making Santorum. Be careful when pulling the brush out of Santorum. You don't want to drip Santorum all over your clothing. That would be a stain very hard to get out.

Santorum is as you expect a Chocolatey Brown. It has a deep red shimmer that is present when it is matte and glossy. I personally like glossy Santorum, but everyone is different.

Say what you want about the polish, at least Santorum is raw and unfiltered, something I always enjoyed. Best yet, Santorum works well the "Fish Eggs" on my nail and I had no adverse effects while wearing it.
You can purchase ManGlaze Santorum and all the other shades they offer on their
Facebook page. Santorum retails for a mere $11.82 which is quite a bargain and it won't make your wallet hurt. Actually getting some Santorum was the least painful thing I did all day!
Oh my god. This was so wrong. I laughed so hard. So, so hard. I don't love the polish, but I think I need to own it anyways, just to say I have Santorum! Curse you.
ReplyDeleteHeh. I like when my 12 year old boy mentality takes over and writes a post. You could get Lesbihonest polish instead!
DeleteAbsolutely DYING over here!!!! Best. Review. Ever.
ReplyDeleteI don't really care for brown polish, but I might have to give Santorum a try. I mean, one should try everything at least once, right? And if you're going to try brown, you really should start with Santorum.
Hilarious! I always love your blog, but this one really had me laughing out loud! I love the polish, too. I have been admiring manglaze from afar. Not sure which to get... first. I really want them all. Santorum just pulled out ahead of the rest :)
ReplyDeleteI visited spreadingsantorum.com and it is sick, sick, sick. I'm think it's cruel to a man who had to deal with the illness of his little daughter while he was on the campaign trail. So the nail polish color was to mimic "santorum"?
ReplyDeleteThe Manglaze polish was not intended to MOCK or mimic Santorum. I'm just telling you where the definition of the word came from. And To be honest, it's just nail polish. Not a political statement.
DeleteIf you are running for president, you know you will be mocked and criticized by the masses who don't agree with you. He probably thought it was distasteful, but I'm sure he didn't loose sleep over it.
DeleteAs for the polish, I love the shimmer, and I think I'd prefer my Santorum glossy!
I agree with you Frankenstyna. When I said mimic "santorum," I meant santorum as defined by spreadingsantorum.com, not necessarily Rick Santorum the man. It's nail polish making a political statement.
DeleteI think the word was intended to be cruel to Rick Santorum because of his views and goals politically, not because of his daughter.
DeleteAnd. I don't find that this has anything to do with Senator Santorum's daughter. I also purposely did not link the Spreading Santorum website on this post as I didn't want people that are more sensitive to the "definition" to be offended.
DeleteThe Style Page: what's cruel is equating homosexuality with incest and bestiality, like Santorum did in 2003.
Deletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Santorum%27s_views_on_homosexuality
Not to get into a political debate here, as it's obviously not the place, but this guy deserves all the namecalling he gets, and then some.
spreadingsantorum.com happened years and years ago--well before he became America's favorite Dark Ages politician. Also, how is it Dan Savage's fault that dude was out there trying to get elected president while his daughter was sick?
DeleteAnyway. Regardless, I would under any circumstances refuse to feel one bit of sympathy for a dude who says that a pregnancy as the result of rape is a "gift." To paraphrase Cee Lo Green: forget him.
Hahaha this is wonderful! Props to Manglaze for this!
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit queasy thought but LOL at the same time!
Elvira, you made my day! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOD, I AM DEAD FROM THE AWESOME. Bwah!!! As it turns out, I prefer my Santorum glossy as well. I will admit, I'm not crazy about the color, but this stuff is so damned awesome I'm going to buy some anyway. Long live Santorum. *snort*
ReplyDeleteLOL! How did you do the fish egg nail? I know Ciate is coming to the States, but yours looks unique. Did you get the little balls at Michael's?
ReplyDeleteI did get them at Michaels. They are called Microbeads and you can find them in the Scrapbook Section of the store.
DeleteI was doing so well not buying Santorum just for the wonderfully awful name but now that I know it's awesome on the nail as well. Yeah there's no hope for me.
ReplyDeleteDisgustingly hilarious! I've really been wanting to try Manglaze polishes but can't decide which colors I want. This helped narrow it down a little because, as pretty as the color is, I will think of nothing but that definition when I wear it. Maybe Lesbihonest because it's gorgeous and always reminds me of Pauly D.
ReplyDeleteThis was just way too funny!
ReplyDeleteOMG. You had me cracking up in the office! I got a couple of weird looks, but this totally made my day!
ReplyDeleteI am loving the polish Santorum! Especially with the top coat!

ReplyDeleteI quite love you, Pink Sith, quite a lot actually. I've read your previous comments in a few posts here and there where you mention people complain about your language or what have you, but I've always found you to be particularly pleasant. :) I like reading your posts, each and every one of them. And once in a while you have a gem so great it forces me to come out of lurkdom and say something.... Well done, madam. Well done. :D
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, the innuendos in this post almost made me pee myself with laughter!
ReplyDeleteAnother lurker coming out to say... Brilliant! Best post I have read all day, nail polish related or otherwise. Thank you for the lolz.
ReplyDeleteOMG! This had me in stitches! Love the polish and the commentary!
ReplyDeleteI love Manglaze they are so epic! I'm not a fan of the color but I find it delightfully evil lol. I just swatched Lesbihonest myself and love it!
ReplyDeleteHahahahaha... Great post! I Googled then I laughed all the way through reading!
ReplyDeleteI was laughing so hard reading this!!
ReplyDeleteMwahahahahaha! You made my day... I just DIED! XD
ReplyDeleteOut of all the polishes I have taken to my pedi appointments, Santorum was her favorite. I love it with a glossy topcoat, it really brings out the shimmer in it.
ReplyDeleteoops, her meaning my nail tech at the time.
DeleteI've loved ManGlaze for quite some time and have just recently started reading your blog. I own all of the colors ManGlaze has put out so far and I must say Santorum is one of a kind. The not so subtle innuendo you entered into your review was quite amusing and appropriate.
ReplyDeleteWhat I find extremely distasteful though is some readers taking this as an opportunity to pull out their back ally soapboxes and try to turn something as fun and harmless as nail polish and try to cause a political/moral stir. Nowhere on the label or on ManGlazes site or facebook do they directly link the nail polish Santorum to former Senator Rick Santorum. As you have stated the color and name were inspired by blogger Dan Savage and the definition of santorum is nothing new. ManGlaze has earned my undying respect and loyalty for being bold enough to put out a product such as Santorum, not just for the meaning of the word, but also to fill a huge, gaping void that existed prior to it's conception. I know quite a few people that enjoy having Santorum on their nails and I've gotten quite a few compliments from it myself.
Let us all put aside our political leanings and wear our Santorum proudly, whether it be in a full nail, classic manicure or as the ManGlaze official way to wear Santorum as they have posted in a video on their facebook.
nice color. too bad it was named after an unrepentant liar and all around horrible person.
ReplyDeleteAs beautiful as the color is, I think I'd have a very difficult time explaining why I have (glossy) Santorum on my nails...
ReplyDeleteThis has to be the funniest, most clever post I've ever read.
Hahahahahahaha this was hilarioussssss!!!!!!!!! Santorum is so beautiful!!!! That reddish/burgundy-ish glitter definitely turns me on!!!! I want Santorum all over my fingers now...Perhaps even on my toes ;)
ReplyDeleteThis was so funny. It really brightened my day, thank you Elvira. And now I want this polish even though I usually don't like brown colours.
ReplyDeleteAhahaha, I was sniggering through this entire post. Yay for ManGlaze and yay for you :)
ReplyDeleteHahahaha - oh no you did-ent! I love you.
ReplyDeleteI didnt know what that word meant...until I looked it up on my phone---not my office computer. haha. yucky word. But nice polish :)
ReplyDeleteVery disappointed in this entire post and most of the comments. This is obviously meant as an affront to Sen. Santorum (not necessarily his daughter's illness, tho). I can only imagine if someone posted the same type of mean-spirited parody of Obama during the previous election. And, how sad that when someone who is obviously conservative in their politics and beliefs states they are offended, that the comments turn against them. I look to makeup blogs for neutral light-hearted discussion and not this type of adulation of products that are meant to offend. I read the same kind of stuff on Charlestongirl's blog in her pro-Obama banter and I was very disheartened. There is no respect anymore for the intended audience unless they believe EXACTLY like you do.
ReplyDeleteIt's meant as an affront to his awful anti-gay stances. His anti-gay beliefs are awful and horrifying, and are offensive to everyone who believes in equal rights (which, honestly, should be everyone.)
Delete"I can only imagine if someone posted the same type of mean-spirited parody of Obama during the previous election." Exactly. Thank you Suselew.
DeleteDid Obama take an incredibly offensive stance against homosexuals? Basically saying they were animals and shouldn't be allowed equally rights under the law? No?
DeleteWell then...
Actually, Obama has. He has actually defended the "Defense of Marriage Act". I'm sure you can probably find a clip of one of his many speeches on You Tube, if you don't believe me. (The DoM, by the way, is *against* same-sex marriage)
DeleteSuselew. You have already unsubscribed from my blog so I doubt you will ever read this. I was not able to reply earlier because I had the flu and wanted to be of sound mind and body when I replied to your "comment".
Delete1) I never once said anything PRO or ANTI Rick Santorum in my review. This was a review of nail polish
2) I never once said anything PRO or ANTI Obama in my review. This was a review of nail polish.
3) I have no control over this Charlestongirl and the posts she makes on her blog and she has none over my blog. Please do not try to draw a relation between us. I was reviewing nail polish.
4) I merely provided FACTS as to a definition "Santorum" that another individual, not related to this blog in any shape or form, used on the internet years BEFORE this nail polish was released. The FACTS I provided in my Review of This nail polish might be upsetting but they are simply FACTS, not opinion. This was a review about nail polish.
5) I did not link specific websites in this post nor did I give the "definition" that Mr. Savage coined in this blog post because I knew that:
a) it was Pornographic
b) may upset more sensitive readers
c) This is a Nail Polish review not a commentary on the definition of the word "Santorum"
6) You can't get any more lighthearted discussion about makeup and NAIL POLISH as you can here. I never once gave my opinion of the current president, the men running for president, the state of politics, free speech or the price of tea in China (Which by the way can be calculated HERE http://supertart.com/priceofteainchina/index.php The reason I didn't do all of those things is because This was a review about nail polish.
7) I decided not to censor any responses to this post because, unlike some people, I don't believe in censorship. None of the commenters responding to this post (about Nail Polish) nor to your actual comment, actually attacked you, called you bad names, etc. That's because this was a post about Nail Polish.
8) Your retort about there being no respect anymore is moot. I was not disrespecting anyone in my post about Nail Polish. I did not put down Senator Santorum, people that support Senator Santorum or Republicans, Independents or Democrats. There was nothing done of the sort. What I did do was point out FACTS. I know sometimes the FACTS can be upsetting. Sometimes people choose to ignore FACTS and go with opinion. However, this was a blog post about Nail Polish, so I am only guilty of writing about Nail Polish and using FACTS.
9) YOU Assumed. YOU jumped to conclusions. YOU took things way to personally. I was posting about nail polish. YOU made it more than that and therefore opened yourself up to criticism, which you obviously couldn't handle. I posted about Nail Polish. YOU read too much into it.
10) This post was about nail polish...nothing more.
P.S. This is MY BLOG. It contains MY OPINIONS. If you don't like them, that's too bad. You can skip the post or stop reading entirely. But you'll miss out on all my future posts about Nail Polish, Taupe Eyeshadow and all sorts of other pretties, all because you couldn't cope with the FACT that I was posting about Nail Polish.
DeleteYay Pink Sith! You sound like Patrick Henry and John Adams! You go girl!
DeleteLove the post, love the polish! Wish I could be as funny when I write....
ReplyDeleteAs for people offended by this post, we all know Elvira is irreverent and a lot of the people who read her blog are also irreverent. This post is just like anything else, if you start to read and are offended, just skip it. I have noticed how sensitive some conservatives (or liberals, for that matter!)are and it's not Elvira's or anyone else s job to only write things that you agree with. After all freedom of speech is still protected in this country........
This is an utterly DERANGED product and review. And I say that with love and props!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! That is hilarious! Santorum is a huge lemming of mine. As I'm writing this I'm watching The Rachel Maddow Show and guess who was just on the screen? What timing! Anyway...as soon as I heard about and saw this polish I knew I had to have it; it's great on so many levels! Who knew that getting Santorumed could be such a great experience?
ReplyDeleteRebecca R.
OMg this is beyond wrong hahahaha.
ReplyDeleteThis is so right in every way! Ha! Great manicure too.
ReplyDeleteHoly mackerel, Elvira, this is genius. They should let you write the descriptions for this over at ManGlaze.
ReplyDeleteI agree with anonymous above that a nail polish post is not the place to air political grievances or take offense at perceived slights.
I read this, and googled it while eating a bacon and egg sandwich....I think I gagged a little...LOL
ReplyDeleteThis was a great post! I don't think you said anything to offend anyone but you know what- you are right- this is YOUR blog! I enjoyed it and it made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteThis may be one of the best nail polish reviews I have ever read.
ReplyDeleteYou are hilarious and I love your blog! :)
