Makeup Wars the $20 Face Battle -Review, Pictures, Swatches

The battle has begun.  This makeup war is to do a full face of makeup for only $20 (before taxes).  Now some of you might find that fairly simple but for this Chanel addict I found it challenging.  The rules of this battle were:
  1. Spend no more that $20 USD on makeup for your entire face
  2. The price of skincare, primers and makeup tools did not have to be factored into the overall $20 total.  However if you were a special kind of thrifty sadist you could certainly add that in.  I opted out.
  3. You could take advantage of coupons, Buy one Get one deals and sales. All was fair game in this war.

So how did this Neiman Marcus addict do?  Not too bad actually.

Here is all the stuff I got for under $20:

Foundation, Concealer, Powder, Blush, Eyeshadow, Liner, Mascara, Lip liner and Lip gloss!

I shopped a sale at ULTA. stopped by a 5 Below store (everything is $5 or less) and hit up my local Sally Beauty Supply for all of my makeup needs.

Like any good method actor I needed motivation to spend only $20 on a full face of makeup.  Here's how I imagined it. I'm stranded in the middle of nowhere and I have a business meeting at 8AM the next morning.  For some inexplicable reason my makeup and luggage was lost and my credit card doesn't work.  All I have is the cash in my wallet and for some reason, all my makeup brushes, skin care and primers (Hey, I said inexplicable).  After spending money on a new set of clothing for the meeting and a toothbrush & toothpaste all I have left to my name is $20.  For some reason my rental car and hotel are direct billed so my food, lodging and transportation has been taken care of.  But I can't show up to the meeting bare faced.  I suffer a stress acne breakout and my lashes are invisible without mascara, I NEED makeup!

I head to the nearest Sally Beauty Supply and pick up some color cosmetics.  Sally Girl brand cosmetics are incredibly inexpensive and there are several options for eyeshadow, blush, lipstick, liners and mascara.  I pick up 2 Shimmer Stripes palettes for $0.79 each. One to use as a blusher and one to use for eyeshadow.  Since my hair is red I can use a stripe from the blusher as an eyebrow powder or if I had blonde hair still I could have used a stripe from the eyeshadow palette for a brow powder.  Multitasking products are awesome!  I also pick up a lip liner, sheer gloss, mini mascara and a liquid liner all for $0.99 each.  My current total is only $5.54.

Sally does not have any foundations or concealers I would feel safe putting on my face so I head to the ULTA next door.  As luck would have it, ULTA is having a Buy One Get One 50% off on Maybelline foundation products!  I select the Maybelline FIT foundation in the lightest shade (#110) and the coordinating pressed powder.  Both items retail for $7.99 each but because of the sale I get the foundation for $7.99 and ULTA only charges me $3.99 for the powder.  Total spent at ULTA $11.98.

Oh but I forgot Concealer! I drop by the 5 Below, a store that has all sorts of junk for $5 or less and find a meager Wet n Wild display.  I nab a concealer for $1.99 and I'm out the door.  Total Spent at 5 Below $1.99

So let's see how much I have spent so far:
Sally Beauty Supply: $5.54
ULTA: $11.98
5 BELOW: $1.99
TOTAL: $19.51
$0.49 to spare!!!

The next morning I'm head for my meeting with a full face of professional looking makeup!
Ta-Da!

So, How did I do?  I guess I could have picked up a $1.99 lipstick instead of a liner and gloss but I'm weird about lipstick and I thought at least I could vary the shade of the gloss with the liner.  The liquid liner was total crap, so next time I would get a pencil liner just to be sure I get something that works. The concealer wasn't so awesome. I had to layer it quite  bit with the foundation to cover a blemish, but it worked OK.

I'll have reviews of some of the products I used during the week so you can see more shots of everything and see how it worked.

Have you ever done a $20 face?  What would you have done differently, if anything?

  1. Elvira! You did great with this challenge! Shopping at Sally's was a great idea. I totally forgot about their affordable Sally Girl line when I was doing my shopping. Your makeup looks great! :)

    1. Thanks! Yeah. I have a similar issue w/ Walmart where I live. Scary part of town, Scary Parking lot. I hate giving them my money, etc.

  2. I wouldn't have thought to go to Sally's. Maybe I could have extended my $20 to get powder since my foundation needed it desperately. How was the mascara?

    1. The mascara was just OK. I'll review it tomorrow. But I would have rather found a $1 mascara somewhere else.

  3. I always forget about the sally line too! You seem to have done a lot better with this foundation than I did as well, it kinda hates me.

    1. Aww. the Maybelline Fdtn seems to work better if I put powder over it before I apply blush and all that stuff....still it doesn't last as long as I wished on my oily face. I'll review it this Friday. :-)

    1. Thanks! I really wanted to make sure I had a great foundation & concealer so most of my money went to that. Thank goodness for BoGo 50% off sales!

  5. Well done! How did you like the Fit Me foundation?

IMO for a dirt cheap product it really performs.

I love watching the the 20 dollar videos online, and like many here, had a big ole DOH! moment about Sally's.

    1. I think the Fit Me Foundation was pretty decent. I'll be reviewing it this Friday. And apparently I'm the only one in the group that went to Sally's for color cosmetics!

  7. How awesome and you look fantastic with your budget face! hahaha - I on the other hand dropped some scrill on LMdB shadows on Saturday. I will be refering to the $20 face posts for the next few weeks. I would have loved to participate in this challenge.

    1. Thanks!! LMdB shadows you say?? Which ones? And yeah. Apparently ELF, NYC and Sally Girl are your friends for the under $20 look. :-)

  8. So pretty - great choices. I never thought FIT me would have made it in the budget, and going to Sally's was super smart.

    1. The only way FIT made it in the budget was b/c ULTA was offering a BoGo 50%. Trust me. I wanted a good foundation and would have sacrificed blush or eyeshadow to make that budget. :-)

  9. Love your look!!!! Great idea to go to Sally's too! I tend to forget that they have bargain items. I ended up paying full price for nearly everything that I got. I'm a bad bargain shopper, lol!

    1. Thank you! I'm not really a bargain shopper either. I just happen to be at ULTA at the right time. :-)

  11. Awesome post, Elvira. I've found some great drug store buys in the past, especially with glosses and mascaras. You look gorgeous (and I love the hair!).

I've learned to justify my expensive habit by extrapolating cost-per-use on a lot of items, especially my expensive lipsticks. The conversation with my husband usually goes like this:

DH: "You spent HOW MUCH on that lipstick?"

ME: "$30. But before you get upset, you have to think of it like this: when I use cheap lipstick, which is $10-12, I have to reapply 4-5 times per day. With my $30 lipsticks, I only have to reapply after lunch. So really, I'm only using about 25% of the product with the expensive versus the cheap. If you divide 30 by 4, it comes to a cost of $7.50 per tube, which is actually CHEAPER in the end. Right?"
DH: "So how do you explain the fact that you have 50 lipsticks and will never, ever use one up? Why can't you just have ONE lipstick and use it all before you buy a new one? And how the hell is it that you failed math in high school, yet you're a wiz with the calculator when it comes to makeup?"
ME: "Apparently, you don't know who you married. And you vastly underestimated the power of motivation when it comes to excelling at math."

    1. Thank you Shannon!! I love your "Makeup Math". Makes perfect sense to me. Does your husband collect anything or have a hobby? Just throw it right back at him if he gives you crap about your lipsticks. :-)

  12. Oh! How fun! I've stolen your idea to use as a luncheon "game". I meet with friends once a month for lunch and girl talk. We're all ladies "of a certain age" ;-) who have plenty of discretionary income to spend on high end cosmetics. When I proposed that the next time we meet, we all wear a $20 face and bring our cheapies with us for show 'n tell, the idea was met with great enthusiasm. It will be interesting to see what these luxury brand mavens come up with :-)

Although I prefer high end products for their quality and performance, I think it is wonderful that every woman, no matter her budget, can find items to enhance her beauty and femininity.

  15. What a cool challenge! I looked at all the other blogs too.

I like a lot of Wet-n-Wild and Elf products. Cutting out a few things from my daily routine (or switching a few things out) would get me in the $20 range. I'm a huge fan of the tinted moisturizer from Wet-n-Wild and the ELF color correcting power, and Wet-N-Wild makes a pink lipstick (bright hot pink) that stays on absolutely all day (almost becomes like a lipstain) and is great for cheek color too. I hardly ever get "high end cosmetics" anymore - not in the budget and often seems like there are cheaper "dupes" available. Loved seeing the posts as it gave me ideas of a few items to try (the Elf all over sticks things).

  16. I love Sally's Beauty Supply - I'm surprised you didn't check out the Palladio offerings there. They have great lipstains and liquid liner pens. It would have been awesome to see if you could squeeze a nailpolish in there!

    1. Believe it or not the Pallido stuff was waaaay over the budget. Most of the foundations were $10. :-(

    2. I was at BB&B not to long ago and I noticed the Palladio prices were pretty high. I can remember a few years back when the prices were just a bit more than WnW, but now it seems they're comparable to Maybelline.

    3. Hi Anon: Yeah. Isn't it crazy how much the price has increased? They used to be so inexpensive. :-(

  19. Here in Filand I could never get that stuff that cheap (and ofc most of the stuff we don't even have). The Maybelline Fit Me Foundation and powder would together cost me over 20€ ;) That is taxes included, we have a somewhat different taxing system and you can't really detach the tax from the actual price, it's all wrapped up in once big bundle. Still I am atriqued to do this challenge in my own blog.

  20. This challenge would have been literally impossible in Australia :( our cheap, 'drugstore' type make-up is all $15-20 for each eyeliner/mascara/lipstick. That's why I shop indie or online!
