Mattify Cosmetics ULTRA Powder - Review, Pictures

You all remember how oily my face is, right?

Lemme remind you.

Ah Ha! Now you remember.

Well it was that funny picture that caught the eye of the people over at Mattify! Cosmetics.  They have a special line of powders and products specifically those of us blessed with oily skin. You heard me correctly. Blessed. As in, my skin is oily so I don't get winkles as quickly as others with dry skin!
[DON'T listen to "Miss Glass is Half Full". I'm Elvira's Pessimistic side, the oily skin is NOT a blessing.  You know it, I know it.].

So when Mattify! Cosmetics sent me their Mattify! ULTRA powder and Tinted Powder I was super excited to try it!
[No she wasn't! She was skeptical and was worried about yet another failure in a long line of products claiming to mattify. Don't let that Pollyanna Optimistic attitude fool you]
I printed out the instructions from their website and immediately want to work using the Mattify! ULTRA powder.

It was very very finely milled.  Finer than any other powder I currently own. I was super impressed.  while the instructions didn't give the full ingredients they did say:
"Mattify! ULTRA is composed of the same Kaolin Clay and Cornstarch used in our famous original formula, but also includes the oil absorption power of Silica Spheres, Rice Powder and Titanium Dioxide."
Ah. I see. All great oil absorbing ingredients. I must give this a try, I thought to myself.
[No. she thought 'Dang this stuff is going to clog my pores and still not work', I just know it...well that is what the pessimistic side of her thought.]
So I take out my fluffiest powder Brush, My Japonesque #333. lightly swirl a little Mattify! ULTRA powder into my brush, tap off the excess and lightly patted the powder onto my bare skin. I wanted to use it before my foundation as a sort of primer (as suggested in the instructions).  Then I applied my foundation and concealer and applied another light dusting of the Mattify! ULTRA to my face. I went on to apply my blush, shadow mascara, etc and when I was finished and ready for the finishing powder I mixed a little bit of the Mattify! Tinted Powder in Light/Medium to the Mattify! ULTRA to create a lightly tinted finishing powder.  It worked perfectly!  I had a beautiful matte complexion. My pores were not as visible and no powder has settled into my fine lines.  I was in awe.
[Yeah me too, to tell the truth, but I KNEW it wouldn't last.  I bet that by 10AM There would be oil breaking through]
By that afternoon, I had not needed to touch up my face at all.  Whatever was in these products was working like a charm!
[OK so 10AM passed, but my negative attitude would eventually win. by 1PM I bet I was going to be an oil slick!]
After lunch I used a blotting sheet (only 1!) to touch up the corners of my nose and that was about it!  My skin was still relatively matte looking!
[WTF? I thought by now I would totally be an oily mess.  This Mattify! ULTRA is actually working?!]

By the time I went home for the day the oil was starting to break through. so I used some blotting papers and then reapplied a light dusting of the Mattify! ULTRA and The Mattify! Tinted powder as a touch up.
[well there!  see! at 4:30 the oil broke through I knew this wouldn't work....what?  Oily skin and Very oily skin can go about 4-6 hours with little need for a touch up and My skin went 9?  Damn!  Miss Golden ray of sunshine was right!  This stuff actually works!  I hate when my pessimism and negativity don't work out.]
I washed my face about 5 hours later. My skin still looked mattifyed and fresh!  I removed the powder easily along with my other makeup and noticed that the powder didn't contribute to any clogged pores or acne on my face.
[HA! I'm back!  I bet you this stuff will cause me to break out over time! I bet I'll have tons of clogged pores and acne after a month of use!  Mark my wor...]
But the best part!  After using this for a month, I did not see any increase in clogged pores or acne related to using these products!
[YAY!! Finally!..uh I mean. Boo!...er...What am I going to do with all of the Phillips Milk Of Magnesia now that I have found something that works better and I don't have to use a medicine for Constipation on my face!?]
Do you NEED this?  YES!  The Mattify! ULTRA powder worked really well on me. Better than any other over the counter oil controlling product I have ever used! It's prefect for those that were worried about upsetting the natural Ph of their skin by using the Milk Of Magnesia method, and it won't contribute to clogged pores or more acne. The Mattify! ULTRA Powder for Oily Skin comes in a 30 Gram Sifter Jar and retails for $12.99.  Or if you like, You can get the Super-Sized XL Mattify! ULTRA Powder for Oily Skin  These 3 Ounce Sifter Jars are filled with 4x more powder than the  regular size jars and retails for $29.99 When I run out, I plan to buy a XL Jar or TWO just so I never have to be without it.  That's how much I love this!

Do you NEED the Mattify! Tinted Powder? Well, I would say, if you are as fair as me, no. It will be too dark and yellow on you. Maybe a MAC NC20-25 would do good with the light to medium color, but alone this is not going to work for me.  Thankfully the Mattify! Cosmetics sells 2 gram sample packages of the tinted powder for $3 USD each so you can try before you commit to a fill size jar.
[The pessimistic me wants to complain about this, but  I honestly have nothing to complain about. This stuff works great!  I guess I'll complain about not having anything to complain about.]

  3. Ha! Oh, Elvira, you are my favourite :D This would be a terror on my face (I live in Alberta; my skin is dry and dehydrated /all year 'round/), but it does sound perfect for oily complexions!

Keeping it in mind for the next time someone asks me for a mattifying powder rec. You have me convinced of its brilliance!

    1. Oh yeah. This is NOT for you for sure. I envy your cold weather and dry skin. Really I do!

  4. I just wanted to let you know that you can also use regular tissue paper (the one that you use for gift wrapping). I tend to cut up a sheet and put it in my bag when I need to touch up, and it will remove excess oil, without costing a fortune!

  5. Wow, sounds good, I almost can't believe it :-D And I actually think the tinted version would work for me. My face tends to be a bit redder than my neck and the rest of my body, so I like that it's yellow. I'm adding this one to the wish list! Woohoo!

  8. Oh and by the way. You really are blessed because the wrinkle thing is so true. My skin is like the sahara and no matter what I do it doesn't get better and the wrinkles keep coming. No fair since I work so hard on my skincare. Welcome to my pity party. ;-)

  9. Do you have any idea how this compares to MUFE HD Microfinish Powder? That's my latest for oil control, but always on the lookout for the next best thing.

    1. I do know how this compares. I have both. The MUFE HD powder is Silica spheres only while the Mattify! Cosmetics is Kaolin Clay, Corn Starch, Silk Powder AND Sicica Spheres. so aside from giving a smooth finish (from the Silica Spheres) you get oil control too!

    2. Thanks for the reply. Off to order now. Hoping this may finally be my non-cakey t-zone saver!

  10. I'm so glad that you found something that finally keeps the oily skin at bay! Finding that one damn product is like hunting for the Loch Ness Monsther and Big Foot's offspring.

  11. Elvira, do you have any parts of your face that can dry out when you use super-mattifying products? My nose and forehead get as oily as yours, but when I use products that are mattifying enough to keep them matte most of the day, all the skin around my mouth dries out so bad it gets flaky and gross. Is this ever an issue for you? Do you have any suggestions for how I could keep my nose & forehead matte without abusing the lower parts of my face? I've tried skipping powder there but then I go to work with part of my face looking smooth/matte and part of it looking shiny, which looks totally weird overall.

    1. I can at times. More in the winter than in the summer. I understand your frustration. My suggestion would be to use a mattifyer only on the T-Zone where you get oily and then use a product like MUFE HD powder or IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores on your cheeks to give the same diffused finish to match your T-Zone. The Silica Spheres in the MUFE HD powder will not dry you out as much as the Mattify! Cosmetics powder, but it will help control a little bit of oil.

  12. Very interested in this! MoM does nothing for me! Is the fair/medium tinted more pink, yellow or neutral in your opinion?

  13. Hey I am going to order this to set my Foundation for work. I wear double wear foundation, and will this work just as good to set my look. I was at work today and after six hours I had oil film all over my face and I don't get the chance to touch up. I'm like you extremely oily and I really need this to work while I at work!

  14. Awesome review Elvira! I surely don't need it for my dry skin but now I know what to recommend to my oily skinned friends!

  15. Just ordered the combination skin powder to try, my t-zone is oily but my eyes, cheeks and mouth are so dry that I get eczema, I hope this helps :(

  16. I'm so glad you found something! This isn't a problem for me personally, but I've followed you for such a long time, I felt I it was a personal victory when I got to the end of the review! Speaking of the review, I'm glad you gave it a good run. I find others (myself included) want to rush to judgement when I'm trying out a new product. I'm glad you have the time and patience to give the products a thorough test before posting your thoughts. Kudos to you! Keep 'em coming. Your reviews are not only thorough, but fun to read as well.

  17. i LOVE this powder! they sent me a tester of the ultra powder this past summer and i used it all so quickly. we had a major heat wave here in june, so that's when i was using it and it was the best powder, ever! it lasted all day, controlled my oil slick of a face until i washed it off, stood up to sweat, should i go on? this is the holy grail of oil controlling products, and now i finally felt like all those girls with perfect skin at the end of the night!

  18. Oh, YAY! I'm a reader, but not often a poster; however this post totally yanked me from the woodwork. I have to say that I'm really happy you found something that works for you! And thank you for sharing your findings! I too share the blessing/curse of super oily skin- and I am SO GLAD to read that there's something out there that will work! THANK YOU an insane amount for posting this, you have absolutely made my day. (and undoubtedly the day of many other slick-faced gals, who are now blotting their tears with their blotting paper, rather than their oil!)
    Yay!
(and I love that picture- every time you post it I laugh like a hyena for about 5 minutes...)

  20. Can I make a bet with Mattify that they still can't keep me matte for more than 4 hours? LOL!
Ive been eyeing this product for about a year now, but yes I'm one of those pessimistic people...so that keeps me from getting something internationally shipped. And blotting sheets are too expensive once you discover the beauty of recycled/brown tissue paper. And Im glad I found your blog, you are definitely a blogger whose review I can rely. -From Extremely Oily Girl

  21. Just ordered this! Hopefully it does what you say it did for you, for me! I use bare minerals matte and I am stil slick 3-4 hours later. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  22. Ugh, I wanted this product so bad! I still do, but it STILL hasn't arrived to me, fifteen days after ordering. I've written to the company to ask what's up- hopefully this powder will get to me (someday), but this shipping and waiting fiasco has turned me off a lot.

  23. Totally just bought this because of this post. My eyes always burn by the end of the day because all the oils are seeping into them along with the dirt and grime collected thoughout the day. Would be so happy if everything on my face stayed where it was suppose to be. :). Thanks so much!!
