Givenchy Le Rouge Lipstick in 307 Grenat Initié- Review, Pictures, Swatches

Givenchy Le Rouge Lipstick Color 307 Grenat Initlé
There is just something about red lipstick that makes me swoon. I love seeing it on other people, and I love wearing it.  I also love buying it. I buy  A LOT of red lipstick. I reckon I have enough red lipstick to feed a small country...wait, what?  Well if, red lipstick were food or better yet, money, then I would be a billionaire. A RED LIPSTICK BILLIONAIRE! One of my favorite things about red lipstick, is looking at a brand new, virgin tube of lipstick.  It's a fetish. I fully admit. I love gazing upon an unblemished lipstick bullet. The redder the better.  So when I received an e-mail from my drug dealer, also known as Sephora, proclaiming the virtues of the new Givenchy Le Rouge Lipstick ensconced in genuine leather, I was sold!

Of course, I live in an area with complete savages, and there is no Givenchy display near me except at Sephora.  The barbarians that roam around the malls in my area have no appreciation for Givenchy or their stunning packaging.  I must admit. It makes me sad that more people are not familiar with this brand.  Sure they have some items that are less than ideal, but what brand doesn't? How do I know this brand is not well known?  Because I heard three different people pronounce Givenchy as "give-in-Chee"  when it should be pronounced "jhee-von-Shee" As heard in this video

And this is how NOT to pronounce Givenchy

This is also how NOT to pronounce Bvlgari

Just so we're clear. OK?

Moving on.

So as, to avoid the unwashed masses, and I was still recovering from The Flu, I went to sephora.com, found the Givenchy Le Rouge lipstick, selected #307 Grenat Initié, described as a "deep red", clicked "add to basket" without a second thought, and went about my merry, flu recovering state. TWO (2) days later, my Givenchy Le Rouge Lipstick arrives.

I open the black packaging to reveal the buttery feeling, leather embraced tube of lipstick.  Two studs at the bottom of this hefty lipstick hold the cap in place (there is also a magnet embedded inside for security.)  The Givenchy symbol and name are engraved on the tube and cap. Is this the first lipstick to come in a leather case? I certainly have never owned one before.

Once you swivel the lipstick up, you reveal the Givenchy symbol embossed into the lipstick bullet. I love this kind of detail in a lipstick.  Heck, even L'oreal does it. It just adds that extra je ne sais quoi.

Anyway. The lipstick formula is described as semi-matte, but I think it looks more satin to me.  Of course,  the color contains no shimmery particles, but it's smooth like satin, but not too shiny either.  In fact, applying this lipstick was utterly delightful!  The lipstick has good slip but not too much that it slides right off your lips after applying.  The feeling on the lips is slightly moisturizing. As a semi-matte formula, I never felt like my lips were drying out or needed extra moisturization while wearing the lipstick.  The pigmentation was phenomenal. I mean, like "I can't believe I ate an entire Pop Tart, and I still have my lipstick on" amazing.  This specific color, Grenat Initié is highly pigmented and leaves a stain of the lips. It does not leave the dreaded "ring around the lips stain" after eating if you apply it, blot and then apply again.

The color. Well the color is just a lovely neutral red that leans ever so slightly blue...but hardly noticeable. While the color is described as a "deep red" I find this to be a medium red.  However when one owns as many red lipsticks as I do, there are multiple color categories for red and this one falls in the neutral, medium red category. Oh and before I forget, this lipstick does have a very light fragrance, but I cannot detect it when I apply it nor does it have a flavor.  That's always a plus.  Givenchy describes the scent as "Mimosa and Blackcurrant".  Whatever. I love Mimosa fragrance almost as much as I love drinking Mimosas. So I'm pleased with the fragrance, what little of it I can detect.

Do you NEED this?  Maybe. I mean does anyone "need" a $36  USD lipstick. No.  But if you are looking for an amazing formula, a luxurious case, beautiful color, then this is worth checking out.  There are 12 colors in the Le Rouge Line.  If you would like to see swatches of all the colors, check out the Mostly Sunny Blog. She has good pictures of all the colors!  Currently you can purchase the Givenchy Le Rouge Lipstick on line at sephora.com and at givenchybeauty.com (non affiliate link). 2. I bought the shade Carmin Escarpin the moment this arrived on the shelves. It's like the dangerous, illicit love child of a luxury lipstick with a Louboutin shoe. But I'm keeping it in the original box so that leather case remains pristine and free of scratches!

    1. Smart move on keeping it in the box. I thought for a little about getting that color, but I was in a "dark" mood when I selected it.

  3. I didn't realize it was real leather when I bought this exact color because, like you, I am a red lipstick hoarder and I am not joining a 12 step program for it! lol It is such a lovely color.

    1. You should totally get one. I mean a leather lipstick case? You have to have it. (Not helping)

  9. Your Sephora order arrived in two days? It usually takes my Sephora orders two days to ship, and then another 3-4 to get here. They lie when they say 3 day shipping.

BUT the lipstick is gorgeous, I want one!

    1. Yeah. 2 days baby. I ordered early in the AM and I believe I live close to a distribution center. But I must say 2 days is super fast.

  10. Loving this color. My "Sephora" aka tiny corner in JCP doesn't carry this brand either. The one in the next city over doesn't either but at least they have Illamasqua. Take what you can get I guess.

  13. I, too, love a good red. (Bright and primary or deep and blue-toned are best.) The packaging really takes this one over the top, though.
Also, those pronunciation videos are hilarious, I haven't watched one in a while!

  14. Really nice review and the color looks good on you. I like this kind of red. I agree it is not really deep red but definitely looks sexy.

  16. I love beautifully packaged lip stuff and this looks amazing! And doesn't seem to be orangey red- but a nice, true red. I would say totally worth the $. But I am an enabler ;-)

  17. hehe, the good thing about living in Holland is that we get mandatory French classes in highschool, which blurs into the hidden closets of the mind if you do not practice frequently.
As for the lipstick, that is too present in my brain and it could swap with my French vocabulaire for a while...This studded one perhaps the last? (which I will forget that it was supposed to be my last, ofcourse, Je ne sais rien)

  18. The pronunciation videos made me sputter tea all over my monitor! Hilarious.

And I need that lippie. Bad. Its gorgeous.

(Even though I JUST bought Clinique's Intense Chubby Stick in 03 Mightiest Maraschino (LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT), and Dior's Dior Addict Extreme 756 Fireworks (love it also, fab color- although it doesn't have tons of staying power...))

Dior sussed me out pretty aptly, as "Addict" quite sums up my red lipstick problem at this point, I'm afraid...

  19. Oh baby! I adore red as well and concur re: enough to feed a small country ;) I could live without leather on my lipstick case ( for many reasons) but this is GORgeous on you! Btw in the 90's I was going around mispronouncing Versace for the longest time. Thank you Cindy and House of Style.

  20. I am planning to buy the Le Rouge 205 Fuchsia Irresistible.

I need that in my life!

However, may I please know the smell and taste?

This will be my first Givenchy lippie.

  21. Oh sorry it's there in the body of the post!

I was so excited I commented before reading.

If no taste, slight fragrance and satiny feel on the lips then I am sold!

Is it similar to NARS Yu? I just bought that.

My fuchsias are NARS Yu and Carthage.

  22. Well, that settles it. I'm getting this lipstick with that 15% off sephora code. It looks amazing!!! Thanks for the swatches and review!
